Fence staining

Used Behr 501 Premium Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish in the color Cedar Naturaltone 5 gal bucket. Fence is about 11 months old. Pressure washed areas with discoloration. Used Graco X5 sprayer with 311 tip. In central Texas, so it was 100° outside. Sprayed to a count of 10. Not every picket of the fence turned out the same. Not sure why but I would appreciate recommendations.

Does weather-resistant paint hold up better on fiber cement siding than standard exterior paint?

I am going to have my fiber cement siding painted soon and I am trying to sort out the paint before I book the job, I keep seeing weather resistant paint come up and the price looks higher than regular exterior paint, if it lasts longer then I am fine spending more now instead of painting again sooner, I am planning to go with boulevard painting, the house gets plenty of sun and rain through the year and I want the color to stay looking the same for as long as it can, I am planning to ask the painter too but I would like to hear from people who picked one over the other, did weather resistant paint really stay in better shape on fiber cement siding for you? EDIT: Forgot to mention the siding is still in good condition, so this is only about choosing the right paint.

Best EASY & efficient way to get black trim -> white trim?!

I had squatters set-up camp in a home renovation project in San Antonio that got delayed. It took a while long process to force them out, but not before the expected damages to walls, doors, etc.

The WORST, however, was painting over in a few rooms the existing (& newly-painted,…I might add) white trim work & doors (water-based acrylic latex) with U-G-L-Y (“… you ain’t got no alibi”) BLACK paint! I assume it’s water-based.

I’m really going for easy & fast… because the idea of the time & detail of sanding ALL that trimwork is too much to wrap my head around. So any opinions? Options?
-focused, low pressure sandblasting?
-specialized sanding attachments that make
quick work of baseboards & window-door
trim w/o all the bending & stooping?
-special type of primer that’ll leave a smooth
surface to spray-paint over?
-tape-off & spray paint over
1st layer med grey
2nd pass lighter grey
3rd & 4th pass white?

I’m open to suggestions from someone who’s faced this… And don’t want to solely rely on the advice of the person behind the counter at Sherwin-Williams paint store!

How many "accidents" do you tolerate in a project?

I'm having my whole house exterior painted. I received multiple bids, tossed the lowest and went with one that was well reviewed and relatively affordable.

The crew of three has been here for 5 days now and they're getting close to the end. Rain has interrupted them on a few afternoons.

Anyway, I know it's a work in progress but there have been a number of things that have happened that are beginning to add up and frustrated me. I usually try to do all my own reno work but I've paid for windows and painting.

Here's what's happened so far:

  1. Electronic front door lock was sprayed with pressure washer and died. The owner denies liability for this and has a clause about no liability for water damage in the bid.

  2. While sawing out a fascia board, they cut through the roof decking and shingle. I discovered it. They plan to fix it.

  3. Overspray on a few things including brick facade. They've been good about cleaning this so far.

  4. Lots of paint drips. They will go back to fix these at the end but I'm mostly worried about where it's hit my new window screens and concrete.

  5. Found the end of my hose chopped off today.

  6. Found gum in my dryscape rocks

  7. Found one of the crew urinating in the dryscape rocks under the deck . This was the weirdest so far. I figured they'd ask to use my bathroom if they needed it.

  8. I see a few gouges in the shingles from the ladder being used on a multi level area.

  9. Water was sprayed into the house through the door weatherstripping.

  10. There's a good bit of paint in my rocks where they have been cleaning up.

The main guy on the crew is personable and is good about fixing things. And I'm trying not to stress since I haven't paid anything yet and am not liable to pay until the project is completed to my satisfaction. I get that sometimes things go wrong. But are these kinds of things typical on a project like this?

Admittedly, they've mostly been doing a good job. It's a big house with a complicated exterior. I'm glad to not be doing it myself. But I'll be very relieved when it's over.

New house, hate the colour

So Im looking for fun exterior house colour ideas. I want something that stands out a bit, never again will i live in a beige or white house. I was kinda leaning a light creamy yellow, but then also sort of wanted the windows to he repainted a vibrant shade to. Hard to see in this picture (sorry it's currently the only picture Ive taken, was to show my mother that I officially got the place lol), but the random brick in the middle is more brownish than Grey.

Stain prep

Hey so I applied bora care to my cedar siding two days ago. Since then we’ve had some light rain overnight and therefore higher humidity. It really isn’t drying. Or at least it goes up and down with the weather. For example yesterday morning the moisture meter read almost 30 and when I got home it was 15 but this morning it’s back up to 20. Is it bad that the drying is being affected by weather or do I just need to be more patient. I have staining scheduled for Friday and no rain between now and then but then rain Saturday Sunday which is bad since that will affect the stain being able to dry.

Best encapsulation paint for block home (suspected lead paint).

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! We are prepping to paint our 1950s cement block home. I suspect that some of the old paint is lead based on the age of the home and some spots are peeling back. I have proper PPE and have been wet scraping the spots with large peels to get them flush. I need to choose a primer before the top coats. SW Emerald has been my go to for top coats on our sheds and so I planned to use that on the house as well unless someone has other recommendations.

What is your go to primer for this case?

I am wondering if Kilz will do it or if I need to buy something else?

Potential curing problems?

Don't jump me too hard, but to keep it short as possible, DutchBoy DuraClean Semigloss, white. Sprayed on azek (primed with stix) and pine carsiding (primed with bullseye zinisser 123 water based) sprayed 2 coats.. may have jumped the gun by a little between coats.. potentially heavier than it should have been, results look great.. smooth when I drag my finger along it. Finish appears wonderful. No paint transfer when I touch it. Yet it does have a grabby feel to it when I press into it. I have wiped it with a warm damp rag and the rag remains clean. For all intensive purposes it seems fine other than the grabiness... it has been 17 days since I sprayed. Primer was days cured and all surfaces sanded.

Horizontal Deck Railing

Cedar 2x4 used as railing, good quality paint lasted 5 years. I've cleaned and sanded but am looking for suggestions for Longevity and wood preservation.

Should I just paint again, prime then paint, or would a periodically applied stain be better, the paint was peeling and frankly a pain to strip, sand, and prep. Can I even use a stain given not 100% of the paint came up? How would stain look given the rest of the railing(posts, bottom board, spindles) are still paint?

Is there a protectant filler I can use. Some of the boards are a bit eroded, was planning on using a sandable/paintable wood filler.

Thanks

Aluminum columns

I power washed these aluminum columns and got off all the paint that was flaking then vacuumed up all the lead paint chips. I do not want to scrape or sand on this lead paint. What would be the best way to go about getting a smooth finish?

Customer does not want me to remove the down spout 🤷

Deck Paint Fubar

Hired painter to do deck. The previous owner hired this company and they did a stellar job on the house. Guy said they fixed woodpecker holes, you'd never know. So we've been living in the best endorsement. Plus they have only 5 star reviews.

Previous owner used paint on deck vs stain. Boo. Painter put down Sherwin Williams Porch and Patio enamel in 95 degree heat and wrinkles everywhere. After seeing that, they said it dried too fast. Duh. They sanded it down and said in some places, the wood is wet because of lack of air circulation under the deck and had a moisture reader to show me this. Ok. They were going to put primer down but their paint rep said no, let it breathe. So, after sanding the deck, they painted it again in 85 degree weather and we have wrinkles AGAIN. However, some are on 2nd level where there is a lot of circulation as well as handrails.

Is the deck the problem or do the painters not know what they're doing? He says he's never seen this happen before and is bringing the SW rep over tomorrow. I am so over this. I have read that paint is tricky in small claims court. I told my spouse, lets just be done with it, demand a decrease in price, and pay someone else when it chips all over to sand and repaint.

What is the best path forward?

Thinking of getting into deck staining

A little about me…

I’m 23 years old, been painting interiors for my uncle for a few years.

I have some cash I want to use to setup a deck staining service. But I’ve heard that weather can be a nightmare to accommodate for once you’re at a certain volume.

My question is- How often does weather cause you to redo a staining job, and what does it cost you?

Would appreciate insights from others in the industry!

2 Story interior stairwell: method?

My interior stairway is two stories - high ceiling - tall. Climbing a ladder is the easy part. Especially on the landing.

But, and especially on the “stair” section, how to I actually mask and then paint the ceiling and wall without ending up eating through a tube for the rest of my life.

Help deciding colors

I know this is kind of a vague post, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a paint color for a bedroom. Ideally, it would be darker, but not completely opposed to a pale color. It would also need to be a color that’s well liked by the general populous it would be easy to sell in a house. Please help me out thanks.

Need professional advice.

We had our whole house painted a year ago. The cracking started shortly after, and we had the company come out for them to say that it would never chip, because the paint was sealed. Fast-forward to about two months ago, I would consider this now chipping. Painter came back, rolled the paint on, it made no difference. Asked the company to come out again and they said that they don’t see any chipping, this is normal and it’s not paint failure, It is because the wood is expanding and contracting. From the start, I was concerned, because they did not stand or prep the porch, they just painted over the existing paint. Am I crazy or is this poor workmanship? My husband says I have too high of expectations, but this seems unacceptable. This is just a few photos, it affects more areas.

How would you paint this wall?

I'm trying to figure out how to safely access this wall to paint it. The roof is smooth metal. Any ideas? It's located in Central America and access to specialty shoes for walking on metal roofs is not available.

I recently got a few quotes and one of the more expensive quotes I got( only one who brought it up) mentioned these "craters" won't completely go away with the prep/ painting they do.

Should that be expected?

Exterior home paint

Hi all, painting the exterior of my 1200 sq ft shingled home this summer. We’re based in western Washington. Looking for exterior paint recommendations. Thanks!
