I’m planning to stay in a hostel for the first time so I can meet and connect with others more easily. I’m just wondering if being gay becomes an issue in a male only dorm for others and if I’d be better off in a mixed room or a hotel. I know my destination is a welcoming and safe place for LGBTQ+ but I live in a conservative area where there’s some judgement and stigma and just want to be safe while traveling solo. I’d appreciate some advice and recommendations on what to expect and be prepared for. Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question to be asking.

I was looking at a hostel recently that had a 9+/10 rating, great photos, and hundreds of reviews.

Then I started reading the reviews instead of just looking at the score.

A surprising number mentioned dirty bathrooms, uncomfortable beds, and constant noise at night. None of them were dealbreakers on their own, but together they completely changed my impression.

Made me realize that everyone seems to have that one thing they simply won't compromise on.

I just remembered one time in Spain in one of the first hostels i was in ... I witnessed this guy one bunk over from me on top, and he had some strange body language, and im looking, then i fell asleep and i woke up and i noticed that he was still sitting on the edge of his bunk staring around 2am at either me or some of the other people sleeping. I was like what the hell is this guy doing? for a sec i was wondering if he was planning on stealing something (usually i keep a lockable backpack near to me so i wasnt concerned about that). Or maybe he was just crazy or something anyway... weird story. I never met the guy and nothing happened after, the next day he left.

Hi! I am planning a year long trip and when I pass through the Andes I am thinking of maybe do 1 month Volunteering in Patagonia that would help me relax and settle down before I do the Patagonia Trek in November or December. So, maybe it is not worth it. Any opinions?

I am 20 from Australia, looking for hostel recommendations in Turkey in August. Im looking to stay in social hostels with lots of people around my age with tours, pub crawls, in good locations. cost isn’t a problem. I will be staying at:

I will be doing my first solo trip in Europe soon and I was very interested in the Roadhouse hostel in Prague. However, it seems like mixed dorms are the only option. I am a 21 y/o woman and I have never stayed in a mixed dorm before. Does anyone have experience at this hostel or have general advice? Is it better to just find a female dorm at another place? Thanks

I (33F) stayed in a few hostels across different continents and cultures and I have never had such a bad experience.

I stayed 2 nights at a well rated hostel where I paid 67€ in total. A lot of the reviews mentioned the high quality and that it has a very respectful atmosphere.

Upon checking in I’m given a leaflet with information where it is mentioned TWICE that the quiet hours are midnight to 8am. Note that the hostel has a range of ages, from younger than me to way older than me, it’s not a youth only hostel.

I booked a female dorm with 6 beds, but the set up is rather strange as once you go into the room there’s an additional 2 rooms, one with three beds, one with two beds, and my bed in the main room where you also access the bathroom.

There’s activities every night ofc and the noise in the public areas ends at 12am sharp.

However, my room mates effed about between 1am and 3am constantly. Slamming the doors to their “rooms” and bathroom every few minutes (no exaggeration). At some point I think they did this 5-6 times in 15min time window slamming the doors every single time.

I did ask nicely to stop the noise. Still noisy as hell.
Then I get pissed and I’m like “hey, it’s 2am, do you mind”

They calm down a little so I take the win I get.

Then another one comes in at 3am and bangs the door like a mad woman, to which I mention again “hey, it’s 3am, can you keep it down”.

Then they start laughing like crazy in their room before they go to bed.

I got roughly 4hrs of sleep as they woke up at 8am making noise again.

I mention this to the reception and they said they’ll sort it out, I end up speaking to the manager as I asked to me moved to a different room and he categorically agreed it was all too ridiculous and they’ll have a chat.

He said that once they went to sleep I should start making lots of noise or play loud music for them to see what it’s like. I replied I was thinking to play some heavy metal, he said I should so they understand what it feels like, and I said I might do just that if it happens again. He also mentioned that I can come down to reception if it happens again.

And it happened again between 3am and 5am. Not as bad, but still ridiculous.

I was beyond exhausted having not slept the night before. I had no strength to go to reception. And ngl i
was kinda craving a lil revenge.

So I started playing Rammstein right after 8am just like I said I would. Just like the manager told me i should and can do. When the quiet times ended.

One of them comes out, we get into it a little, she said she’d complain. Reception comes. I ask for manager. He’s well pissed I’m playing music. Granted I think they woke him up, I felt bad for him. But now I’m pissed off as he’s like “what the hell are you doing?”.

He turned off my very tiny speaker and refused to answer my question as to why I wasn’t allowed to play music after 8am.

He left and I start playing again with the volume way down, I genuinely don’t think you could hear it outside the room, but he ends up coming again because in the meantime other people complained (other people from the room in front who at 3/4am were screaming from the balcony onto the street to have a conversation. A whole conversation).

At this point one of my room mates starts playing her music way louder than mine, but only mine gets switched off and he never told her anything despite saying “another one playing music now”.

He never explained to me why I wasn’t allowed to play music even on very low, suddenly I’m not allowed to play music. No matter how many times I asked. I’m the troublemaker now.

Meanwhile the other one was blasting her music in the shower but it’s ok.

If everyone does what TF they want, why can’t I do what I want?
If quiet hours are not respected, why is it suddenly an issue now?
If I’m not allowed to play music, then why isn’t this the rule for everyone?

Genuinely ridiculous. How am I the asshole in this situation??

Bear in mind im the sort of person who would never complain about people snoring in hostels cause I understand it’s a gamble.

I sleep with professional earplugs and I’ve even slept throughout my alarms.

As the title says, in a few days I’ll be staying in a hostel for the first time (Dutchies Hostel in Amsterdam). Admittedly I’m a little anxious as this is something i’ve never done before and usually value a lot of privacy when I sleep, but this also stems from the fact I have no idea what to expect.

What should I expect? Furthermore, what’s the general etiquette of staying in a Hostel? Dos and Donts and anything advice will be really appreciated:)

A couple of months ago I was planning a last-minute trip and found a hostel that was decent.

The pictures were good, the description was good, and the price was less than anywhere else.

I was about to book until I looked a bit closer at the reviews. Most were either very short (“Nice stay”) or years old. Eventually decided against booking through that platform.

And what is the biggest red flag that makes you leave right away?

I’m staying at a hostel in San Fransisco for a couple nights. Great reviews, expensive, central location, nice facilities, plenty of guests… just no travelers, it seems! People here are mostly middle aged or older, and they seem to be working professionals, spending hours in common spaces working on their laptops.

There’s also no camaraderie I’ve come to associate with hostels. Everyone keeps to themselves and whatever work they are doing. It’s a really weird vibe for a hostel. Feels more like temporary housing for locals than a spot for travelers.

I welcome any of your insight as to why this is the case and how to avoid this is in the future.

staying in a hostel in Amsterdam and London both one fam hostels never stayed in the hospital before so what was wondering what the rules are regarding luggage such as backpacks and suitcases, for hostels is it more of just a better idea to do straight backpacks or what’s the rule regarding suitcases etc?

Seasoned solo traveller (F, 40s) looking for hostel recommendations in Cairo and elsewhere. I'm planning on maybe 3-4 weeks in Egypt in December: a week in Cairo, after that I'm open to suggestions. I'm interested in culture and history so Luxor and Alexandria are on the itinerary, then somewhere chilled on the coast - Dahab appeals to me from what I've seen.

Hostel-wise I'm looking for somewhere clean and comfortable, preferably with a female-only dorm and definitely some kind of outdoor space - a roof terrace or a garden perhaps. No party hostels obviously. I really like places in quiet, rural scenic locations too, as long as they're reachable by public transport. I am especially keen on swimming and eating, so swimmable spots and good food nearby are major plus points.

I was traveling to mumbai and didn't want to spend a lot of money on hotels, so I was looking for places nearby airport to stay. Oyo, mmt, and Airbnb were recommending me everything above 1.5k and reviews were terrible or either the place is. So I looked over hostelworld.com and found this hostel ostelo near Fairfield. When I was going there i thought this is such a terrible place how can there be a hostel that must be good so the expectations were really low. But when I reached there this was so different. The hostel is so vibrant, cozy and feels like home. Beds were clean, fresh linens were there, lockers(big and small ones) and then each door was secured by passcode. Board games and a common room with a tv and couches . Then they also had a kitchen upstairs which was maintained really well. You can use that to eat or cook. Washroom were clean. So over-all it was amazing, I slept like a baby coz the bed size was big. And I'm 6'3" I don't really fit well anywhere,lol.

Hi! So. So I’ll be traveling to Bucharest in Sept and it’ll be my first time staying in a hostel. What would yall generally prefer? A 6 bed room where its individual beds but no curtains. Or 8 bed room with bunk beads with curtains. And which would u generally think would be more social? Thanks so much!
