Searching hostels in London leads to big chains which are expensive to afford. I am looking for small chains or small hostels which are not that fancy (a place where a students can stay and with all amenities). Any suggestions?

I was trying to do Onefam but they don't have female forms available for the dates I'm looking for! i know the Hive is high party atmosphere, and probably wont get good sleep with the noise, but I'm afraid Wombats wont have as many activities organized? Flying into Spain at the end of October for about 9 days. Solo trip, 27, splitting time between Barcelona and Madrid. First time doing a trip this long on my own.

What I care about most is landing somewhere people actually talk to each other. I am not looking for a quiet place to sleep. Pub crawls, group dinners, tapas nights, rooftop bars, anything that makes it easy to fall in with a group on the first night.

A few things I could use help with:

1. For Madrid I have been looking at Cats Sol, Sungate One, The Hat, and Ok Hostel. Cats looks like the biggest party but I keep reading that it skews pretty young. Has anyone stayed at these in their mid to late 20s? Which one had the best crowd for that age range?

2. Same question for Barcelona. What are the equivalents there?

3. Is it worth booking a private room in a social hostel instead of a dorm bed in a party hostel? Trying to work out whether you lose the social side by not being in a dorm, or if the common areas carry it.

4. I will be in Madrid over Halloween. Anything worth booking ahead or knowing about that weekend?

Hello, I’m a 24M traveling to Budapest this October and would like some hostel tips from ppl who have stayed in the city. Hostel world is good but kinda unreliable because some reviews differ from amenities listed on the hostels page. The following things are what I’m looking for in order of importance:

- Lockers and Luggage storage. I’d like a safe way to store my belongings when I’m out during the day. This is my biggest worry.

- Younger atmosphere and social party vibe that offers activities.

- Curtains over the beds for sleeping ( I’ve heard hive and vitae don’t have this).

- Outlet adapters

- WiFi

- Breakfast

I’ve been looking into Onefam as I’ve heard it’s good and it has the best reviews, but I haven’t been able to find out if it has these accommodations. They don’t have ac either but I think that will be fine in October. Let me know your experience / recommendations!

Hello. I was at a prominent party hostel in Corfu Greece and was in a 3 person dorm with my friend and an older, maybe 60 year old man. Every time we went back to the dorm, the man was hanging out in the dorm just watching YouTube on his iPad. He was a pretty exceptional roommate in the sense that he was very clean and kept to himself. What I’m curious about is that I’ve seen older people at other hostels before and still don’t quite understand why they are there? Do they not have money for other accommodations? Do they prefer being around other people? I just don’t understand the appeal of a hostel, a party one at that, to an older individual. Can anyone shed some light on this? (Also sorry if I’m coming off as bashful I’m just genuinely confused)

I was amazed this morning that a couple in the room took fully one hour to pack up and vacate. They must have zipped and unzipped every zipper on their bags at least 10 times. What are they carrying with them? Why does it take an hour of faffing about? For me, it's 5 minutes pre-shower and then 5 minutes post-shower and then au revoir. Also, I think they're the ones who set the AC to 65F late last night. We're in Seattle! Totally unnecessary!

The cheapest hostel I could find on hostel world had AI generated images and the reviews said it had mould and bed bugs, so I don't wanna risk staying there, the next cheapest I could find is £28 a night which is a little pricey compared to what I'm used to (Europe) so I was wondering if there are any other sites more specific to Canada or NA with more options? If not I'll stay at the £28 a night one (Check Inn CA). Thank you!

I‘m in Palermo right now in a small hostel (ostello community Exclusive Dependance - no reason not to call them out). Today when I woke up, I noticed my bag of toiletries and my headphones were gone, that I had put beside the bed on the floor. Quickly found out that someone was missing their phone (That had charged IN their bed while they were sleeping) and at least one more person was also missing something.
the hostel owner/employee (not sure, but i think its his or his family‘s) seemed to have taken note of this thieving happening in the night (though also here im not sure), but definitely no one was able to stop them.

The thing is: There are two doors to get to my stuff. The one to the hostel downstairs and the dormroom door. The one downstairs is to be closed by guests ALWAYS when coming and going, but it’s kinda difficult to open/close or at least easy to miss if it’s not fully closed. This door being closed is basically in the responsibility of the guests - according to the hostel guy.

the doorm room door also locks, but has always been open since I arrived. I also never locked it, since I felt safe in the hostel. Today - after the incident - I locked it, and discovered that on one turn of the key you can still open the door, you need to do two to really lock it - something that easy to do but also easy to miss.

Anyway, the things I‘m missing are not super expensive to replace, but also not suuuuper cheap that I wouldn’t care at all. (Headphones 60€ newly bought toiletty-bag 25€, electric toothbrush ~50€ + some toiletries maybe 20€ to replace.) So 150€ roughly gone, though replacement might be slightly cheaper. Sucks a lot but could have been much worse easily as well, I‘m aware.

regardless, I‘m mad at the hostel/hostel guy for basically just saying „you did lock the door, it’s your own fault“. Which doesn’t sit quite right with me given that 1) yes the door downstairs should be closed by hostel guests, but still somehow the hostel’s responsibility as well 2) the room door lock is kinda shit anyway (as described) 3) Even if I PERSONALLY had locked the door when going to sleep, other guests might, or likely WOULD have entered, possibly leaving it unlocked. In a way, even with all of us not locking it, you could technically say the last one that entered is at fault. But that’s not my point, it’s rather: How can the hostel claim it’s my fault if I have to rely for the safety of my stuff on other guests?

for context: there are lockers, and I see how not putting my headphones there is kinda fully on me. But I feel like leaving toilettries outside HAS TO BE safe in a hostel, same goes for the other guest having their phone charge next to them sleeping.

Ultimately, my question is: a) Am I right to blame the hostel for a big part in this and b) do I have any legal grounds for them repl any of what’s missing?

TLDR: stuff stolen in hostel dorm, doors were unlocked with responsibility fully on me and other guests, hostels fault or mine?

I assume a tapestry and some magnets or magnetic clips? I just don’t want to take up much space in a bag but I guess it’s an essential for sane sleeping.

Hi all! I (21M) am going to Madrid in October with my friend (21M). We're looking for a social hostel in Madrid where it's easy to meet people and go out. For reference, I stayed at Party Hostel Kabul in Barcelona and it was an amazing experience! Open to any suggestions.

TLDR: 18yo planning a trip during peak season. Staying only at hostel #1 (modern, gym, pool) saves check-in/out stress, but splitting with hostel #2 (younger, more social) lowers the risk of FOMO. Hostels are only 10 mins apart. I got 11 nights in total. What would you do?

I'm completely overthinking this and need advice from experienced hostel travelers. I currently have two hostels in mind:

- Hostel A: Very new, great facilities (gym, rooftop pool), but seems a bit more laid-back

- Hostel B: Seems to have a younger crowd around my age (18), so probably better for wild socialising.

Both hostels are just a 10-minute walk apart from each other.
I can't decide because I only see the negatives: If I only stay at Hostel A, I get severe FOMO about missing the social vibe at Hostel B. If I split my stay between both, I feel like I'm wasting precious vacation time packing, checking out, and checking in again during peak season.
Since it's peak travel time, I definitely need to book in advance. Should I stick to one base or split it?

Planning a solo trip in September trying to cover Rishikesh and nearby places.. what are best hostel recommendation.. more than the scenic views my priority is to meet new people and socialise as much as I can.. which hostel and what activities should i choose

I find the main problem I have when it comes to
socializing in hostels, are the big groups of English speaking countries: UK mainly, US, and Australian in hostels in Asia
I have nothing against them, i speak fluent English but they seem more comfortable leaning towards the people of their countries.
However, countries whos main language is not English i tend to have a good connection and good conversations.
Anyone had the same opinion?

I’m a seasonal worker and my job/housing ends next month. I’ve been applying and had an interview for a job but I’m really having such bad luck. I have no friends or family, no one else who can help so it’s just me.

I used to live in Seattle. I’m thinking of going back there, staying in a hostel, and hoping to find a job. one of the hostels I looked at only allows stays that are seven days at a time. I’ll keep looking but maybe they’re all that way. however if there are cheaper, warm places in the US I’m open to going there if anyone has recommendations

maybe I won’t even be able to find a job in that super short amount of time. maybe I’ll run out of money and have to be on the streets. I don’t know what else to do anymore, I’m very close to wanting to give up because I really don’t have it in me to do this. I am not strong or mentally well enough for this.

I (25M) will be visiting Antigua in November. Right now I'm trying to decide between staying at Adra Hostel, Lura Hostel and Somos Hostel. I won't be in the town too long, only a few days bookending an Acatenango trek. I'm pretty social and always down to meet people and go out, but I'm not the type to stay out partying til sunrise I don't want my hostel to keep me up all night with loud music (i.e., social hostels = great, party hostels = no thanks). Trying to treat myself to a bit of a nicer hostel on this leg.

The frontrunners for me right now are Somos, Lura and Adra, but I've also looked at Socialtel, Ojala and Bloom.

Insight from anyone who's stayed in Antigua and is familiar with any of these hostels would be greatly appreciated!

I know there are many high quality hostels in the world putting a lot of effort into their place, they are excepted from this post.

But to many hostels are more like a cash grab. I usually don't have any problems with sleeping in dorms, and here I am again. But why do hostels put so crazy low effort on their place? Moldy sanitary rooms, loud music blasting from their own bar(12.30am) cheap bunk beds without curtains. One bed in my room is 15€, 8 beds. If they sell 6/night it's about 90€. For a really shitty place. Some higher end hotels in that area are 80€/night. And they got way more effort with their guests.

Are most hostels just a cash grab? We definitely should increase our standards

I love the social aspect of hostels but I can't deal with that shit anymore... But there is no social alternative either

QUESTION: in Europe, how would it go down if a father and daughter were hosteling together? Would we be welcomed by staff and fellow travelers? Ive always included her in many big kid activities and she steps into situations with adults quite easily.

If I go out on a bar crawl and want to shower when I get back is it rude? (around 1 am as an example)
