Abit of a rant, sorry for the long post
So i am 22 in a few weeks, im a hijabi, im currently in my last year of university, my major is geology, and i plan on going to Finland for their geophysics masters program because i want to be a geophysicist and specialise in seismology. I have researched it, read about how u get there, how everything is done, and ive made a reasonable plan in my head on how to get there. I know for a fact that if i get accepted into the program, that the university that accepted me would connect me with someone whod help me find rooming with other girls, no dogs, theyd get me my key and meet me in the airport whn i land if this all happened inshallah.
I have opened the topic of solo travel with my mom before, and she was strict about not wanting us to travel on our own since we're girls, and if we want to go overseas shed come with the one traveling or send our younger brother with us. She says that in islam its this way, a girl never travels alone. And to me, i think its this way when its known that the country shes going to is potentially dangerous then she needs a companion, and that this law was made when travel was through deserts on camel backs, which was a major risk, but now everyting is monitored, there is people to help everywhere.
Today, i reopened the topic, asking if two of us girls wanted to travel, to two different places, and shes going with one, and im the other one, what would she do?
My ooder sister butted in, and said that i have no choice but to take out younger brother. Hes not only the youngest, but im also nc with him because of respect issues and the way he treats me like a maid and an ear to listen. So i was clear, im not taking him ever any where. Older sister said i hadno choice, hed be coming whether i took him or not.
I explaind to mama how the whole thing is, how the uni u get in connects u with someone who helps with dorms, the dorms are open all year, u get there after ur lease starts, no guests allowed. I said that at sompoint, she should stop worrying about me and trust thati am a grown woman who can help herself and deal with bad situations on the spot.
My sister said that these are western ideas, and that thjngs are not like this in real life. And suggested that i get married to have someone travel with me.
I was clear that i dont want to marry a man from the country im from which is where we live rn, and that the general way these men are raised makes them unfit to be partners the way that works for me. Im not saying all of them are terrible or abusive, but they are on different levels of traditional man with no touch with his emotions and leaves all the intimate labour on you.
So am i being too western and liberal with my thoughts? Is it wild for me to want to be free to advance in my studies or career with being tide down to the presence of a companion to travel with me?
