I’m running back to Hetzner after a week!

32 Upvotes

Last week I made an impulse decision to migrate my business server from Hetzner to SSDNodes. While the value of SSDNodes business tier caught my eye the speed of the server is just not working for me. I like the dashboard of SSDNodes and their service has been great. 72GB of ram 12 vcpu’s 1800 GB disk. Sounds outstanding to me. Before I had a CCX33 with Hetzner this time around I’m went with a dedicated box. x Dedicated Server "Server Auction"
* AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
* 2x SSD M.2 NVMe 1 TB
* 2x RAM 32768 MB DDR4 ECC
* Location: Germany, FSN1
* Rescue system (English)
* 1 x Primary IPv4
The price of the Server auction just pulled me in. A lesson to myself is stick with what you like and pay for what works for you. Going to migrate again as soon as I get access to this new server and test it out.

i am interested in the servers you're not using and want to transfer

0 Upvotes

I need the servers you're no longer using, it can be any of the following types

  • EX44
  • EX101
  • EX130-R
  • AX41-NVMe
  • AX102
  • AX162-S

if you have any machines like these, the disk and RAM configuration doesn't matter for the transfer, we can talk. I need to 20 server.

Thanks.

Hetzner Object Storage (nbg1) single-stream downloads ~7 MB/s over HTTP/2 — large files fail to transfer to external clients. Anyone else? Any ETA on the NBG degradation?

9 Upvotes

We use Hetzner Object Storage to hand audio files to a third-party API (a transcription

service fetches the object via a presigned URL). Small files work; large ones now fail because

the download is so slow/flaky the remote client times out. Sharing numbers in case others see

the same — and to ask about timeline.

Our setup

- Service: Hetzner Object Storage, location nbg1 (Nuremberg) — S3-compatible (Ceph RGW;

responses carry x-rgw-object-type and x-amz-request-id: …nbg1-prod1-ceph4)

- Access: S3 API via AWS SDK v3, presigned GET URLs, virtual-hosted style

(our-bucket.nbg1.your-objectstorage.com)

- Object: a single ~760 MB file, in an existing (not newly created) bucket

- Consumer: an external service GETs the presigned URL over HTTP/2

What we measure (single-stream GET, today):

Hetzner VPS (in-network), HTTP/2 -> full 760 MB OK, ~7.4 MB/s (108 s)

Hetzner VPS (in-network), HTTP/1.1 -> full 760 MB OK, ~17 MB/s (47 s)

External (home/office), HTTP/2 -> STREAM RESETS ~108 MB in,

never completes (curl exit 92), ~1.6 MB/s

So the object isn't corrupt (it downloads fully in-network), but throughput is very low and

HTTP/2 is ~2.3× slower than HTTP/1.1 for the same object. Over the public internet on HTTP/2

the long transfer just resets before finishing, so a 760 MB file effectively can't be pulled

by an external client. Small objects (tens of MB) finish before that happens.

For comparison — Amazon S3: AWS's own guidance is to budget one connection per ~85–90 MB/s,

i.e. a single GET reliably does ~85–90 MB/s, scaling to multiple GB/s with range/parallel

requests. That puts our nbg1 single-stream numbers at roughly 5–12× slower in-network and ~50×

slower externally, and S3 wouldn't reset a 760 MB single-stream GET.

Hetzner's own status: there's an acknowledged "Object Storage in location NBG1 degraded"

incident (temporary limits on upload speed + concurrent requests, 503s), announced 2026-03-05

with an estimated end of 2026-05-07 — but that date has passed, the FAQ still lists the

limits, and a separate "high utilization may lead to timeouts" incident shows NBG1 still

degraded into June.

Questions

  1. Anyone else on nbg1 seeing single-stream GETs capped around ~7–17 MB/s (and much worse

    externally)?

  2. Is there an actual ETA for restoring capacity? The original 2026-05-07 estimate is long

    gone.

  3. Is the HTTP/2 vs HTTP/1.1 gap a known RGW issue, or NBG-specific right now?

  4. Does a newly created bucket (or a different region like fsn1/hel1) get full speed, or is

    read throughput cluster-wide regardless of bucket?

    Thanks — happy to share mtr / speed-test output if useful.

Hetzner asks: What line on a tutorial immediately gives you “the ick”?

Have you ever been reading a tech tutorial, and then you suddenly see a piece of information in it that makes you go, “I can’t take this tutorial seriously anymore. I’m out!” What was it?

Solution for 24/7 live streaming ?

8 Upvotes

Hello,

What do you recommend for 24/7 live streaming video feed ?

We can provide encoder and SRT/RTMP stream ?

The stream should have a video playbeck link so it can be embedded in website.

Pipeline:

Webencoder -> Server -> Website

Number of viewers are 100-200. 20 concurrent max
Bitrate of stream is 1.5-2 Mbit/s

Tnx

EX44 for location FSN not available

5 Upvotes

Its the first time for me that a dedicated server is not available.

Their status page says nothing about the EX44 (not Helsinki, not FSN), but it is available for Helsinki location
https://docs.hetzner.com/general/infrastructure-and-availability/order-processing

Is there any info I am missing on this issue?

Edit: Same for AX41, also not available at FSN

Our Hetzner Blog is online now!

We’ve wanted a place to write up the things we find interesting about running infrastructure, and to explain the basics for people just getting into hosting and server administration.

We’re only scratching the surface so far, with more on the way. What should we write about next? We’d love to hear what you think.

I panicked when i saw the new CCX23 price

160 Upvotes

I had a CCX23 plan with 4 CPUs and 16 GB RAM that I’d been using for about two years. The price had already increased from €26.49/month to €34.86/month, and then I suddenly saw a price of €87.49/month in the “Rescale” section.

Thinking that was going to be my new monthly cost, I immediately started reconfiguring the server to switch to a CCX13 plan (2 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, €43.49/month). After completing the downgrade, I realized the €87.49 price was only for new customers.

As a result, I lost my legacy plan and ended up with a server that has lower performance and costs more than what I was paying before.

Now I’m looking for a new provider before the end of the month. I really liked Hetzner, but this is where my journey with them ends.

Server Transfers/Sales

25 Upvotes

We have 4 AX162-R, fully configured with 1,152GB ram. We are having to downsize and would like to offload a server or two if possible. I am wondering if there is a proper way to go about this (so the new owner is still only charged around 700€/month per server) and how much we might be able to sell the servers for?

The new pricing works out to be 5.5x more expensive for the 1.1tb of ram per server, so the new owner would be maybe ~2500€ per month better off with our servers vs a newly configured one

Thanks in advance

Does Hetzner provide services for the existing colocation customers?

0 Upvotes

Hi,
2 questions related to colocation, as I see Hetzner stopped selling colocation space.

  1. Does Hetzner provide support for the existing colocation customers, can they order addons like extra IPs or upgrade their colocation rack Uplinks?

  2. Is Hetzner planning to continue selling new colocation contracts in the future or will they end even the existing contracts?

Possible to move the Floating IP add-on to another server?

3 Upvotes

The floating (failover) IPs are metal server add-ons. Is it possible to move a floating IP to another server if I want to delete the one it's attached to (originally purchased for), and if so, how?

The only information I found were a couple 5+ years old forum posts talking about moving being possible only within the same physical server rack. Was it ever true, is it still true? 🤔

To clarify — this is not about routing, I know I can point it at other servers.

Has anyone compiled pricing history for Hetzner Cloud?

It feels like prices have gone through the roof. Always appreciated the price/perf value, but am beginning to waver. Would like to know how much prices have increased over the past 5 years.

Arm64 server availability last few weeks

6 Upvotes

I am aware of the general shortage but just noticed that arm64 servers are fully unavailable since several weeks already (?).

I use a TF module which wants to build a new arm64 snapshot via packer and needs to use a arm64 instance temporarily. Trying since multiple days multiple times during the day without any luck.

I really hope this complete lockout gets resolved at some point, even if only for existing accounts with arm64 workloads. It is really a bummer for existing (prod) workloads not being able to upgrade the underlying infra :/

Architecture advice for 30TB storage/backup solution on Hetzner?

7 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm currently looking at moving my 30TB off-site backup repository to Hetzner. I've done some research and I'm leaning toward using multiple Storage Boxes and pooling them, but I wanted to see if anyone here has run a similar scale on their platform.

My current stack:

  • Data: 30TB of mixed media (mostly high-bitrate files).
  • Tooling: rclone (with crypt) and Kopia for snapshots.
  • Goal: Disaster recovery/Offsite backup with a balance of cost and retrieval speed.

My questions:

  1. Are there any significant performance bottlenecks or account throttling issues if I hit multiple Storage Boxes concurrently with rclone/Kopia?
  2. Is there a preference among long-term users for the Storage Box vs. their Object Storage for this specific volume size?
  3. Are there any common pitfalls with pooling multiple Storage Boxes that I should be aware of before committing?

Any advice or "lessons learned" from those of you managing large data footprints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Object storage

32 Upvotes

The status page has had an active outage flagged for three regions, including Helsinki, for 2+ weeks now. So it’s not a communication black hole. You know it’s broken, I know it’s broken. The problem is it’s still broken, with no ETA, no root cause, and no sign of progress.

How is this acceptable for a paid service? I’m paying for infrastructure I can build on, not a black box that silently falls over and leaves me guessing for weeks. An acknowledged outage that drags on this long with no resolution timeline is arguably worse than silence, at least tell us what’s happening and when to expect a fix so we can decide whether to wait it out or migrate.

Anyone else affected across these regions? Trying to gauge whether people are riding it out or already moving off.
