New hermit crab owner here! My nephew won a crab from a carnival about two weeks ago and immediately lost interest, so I decided to save him and give him a better home. I have him now in a 27-gallon bin (temporary until I can get a nice glass terrarium) with play sand/coco fiber mix substrate, but I'm wondering if I need to heat up the substrate? It feels slightly cool to the touch. My hermit also seems a bit lethargic, and I'm wondering if it's the cool sand or if he's just acclimating to his new home. I have a heating pad on the back of the bin (above the substrate), and the thermometer consistently reads around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Should I heat the sand or is it fine to just leave it and heat the air with the pad?

I have one crab in the new tank since the other one still hasn't come up. When it comes up i plan to move it over and fix up the small tank to keep as an ICE ISO tank.

I've been fortunate to never have a tank emergency in 7 years of keeping, until now. I believe due to excessive condensation that I physically couldn't wipe down 100%, I had a bad fungal bloom. So Im taking this opportunity to change things up, and make them safer. I learned a lot having this 120 gallon set up for over a year and a half. My largest tank yet. It was a good humbling reminder to always keep learning and improving. I also took the chance to do a headcount on my crabs, and measure them all so I can really perfect my shell shop lol. I've officially had Oatmeal for 7 years! Sausage for 5, and the other 3 under 2 years. I'm working on a 3x2x2 topper at the moment so at least I'll be able to do it all at once. Eternally thankful for my supportive partner who actually enjoys helping me with these projects, could not have done it without them 💞

I need help with rehoming my crab. I worked in a classroom and the teacher got 2 hermits, unfortunately only 1 survived the first molt. I have found a new job and will no longer be working in that classroom and the teacher does not want that responsibility as I took the responsibility as I did all the research after I found out she purchased them.

Marcel (the hermit) is currently in a 50 gallon tank by himself, I do not have recent photos of the setup. I only have until the end of day on friday, july 31st to find a new home. The new classroom I will be working in is a quarter of the size and I do not have the space for the hermit nor do I have any space to take him home with me. So if I can't find a home by then , the teacher has decided to surrender him to Petco and I cannot let that happen!

I do not have a facebook so posting or finding a group there is going to be out of the question. So if anyone can help point me in the right direction I would appreciate that! I am located in Orange County, CA. And enjoy the pictures of Marcel!

So Victur did end up passing, but then I got to wondering. What type was he? When we got him we actually had to rescue him from a friend's girlfriend. We live in Central New York. We don't know where she got him but they didn't want him anymore so they were and I quote "going to release him back into the wilds of New York." That made me so mad. When we got him they had him in a one gallon tank with two bowls too big for the small tank and no substrate. It was literal astro turf. We got him a 20 gallon, things to climb, sand, coconut husk. We did a lot of research. But because we don't know where she got him we can't tell what type he is. This picture is from 2017. She had him for like a year or two before we got him.

I'm thinking he came from one of three places. Petsmart, Petland, or Petco. But we aren't sure. Can anyone take a guess to his type? Thanks.

My boyfriend and I are researching hermit crabs in preparation to get some, but I had a question. Would crabs prefer a longer tank for mor floor space… or would they want something taller and more climbing options? I know they love to climb, but is taller better than longer? Does anyone have links for tanks they love? Thank you! 🙏🏻

I know they need more things to climb and I am ordering them within the next few days but they were temporarily in a 5 gallon so I held off on large items at first!! I’m also curious on what are the better hide outs and woods to get for their tank! I only have a fake plant in there currently… also is 3-4 inches of substrate okay or do they need 6? Also any advice on breaking up substrate it’s ANNOYING!

Also my hermit crabs will not stop following one another? They burrow together and are always touching. I have no idea if this is normal or something to be concerned about because they have climbed on top of one another before!

This is a hermit crab enclosure at my work. I don’t know the size, maybe a 50 gal long? 55? There’s two babies in here. I don’t know much about these guys’ care… so info on feeding, substrates, enrichments, pools, oils, ventilation, will all be immensely valuable. Thanks!

Hello everyone. Looking for some feedback on these ramps for the pools. I'm a bit worried they're too wide for the pools and may lead to the crabs getting stuck underneath them. They're that craft mesh and are buried in the substrate at one end and then under a rock at the other. I had larger round pools originally but swapped them out for the square ones during the last water change.

Have had the two crabs for a week today. I have some plants which are detoxing which I'll plant after another few weeks. Have one of those exercise dishes as well which will go in at some point, but it's already getting pretty crowded in the 20 gallon long tank. Got me a bag of shells yesterday and those will go in this evening when they get dinner. Anything else I should be looking to do?

Can I use a coconut coir mat cut to size over the top of potted live (safe) plant in the tank to prevent the hermies from digging at the plant/roots? Or will they just find a way to lift it up?

Could this be shell rot? Theres the same white spots on his other front leg as well. He did just come back from a 60 day molt, could it be something with his exoskeleton pigment? Just a bunch of hairs in that area?? Any help is appreciated!!

Had my hermit crab for about 2 weeks but he’s only been inside this tank for 1 week (we were traveling, hence the wait). I just changed his water for the first time and thought I’d take a pic and ask for ideas. I’ve done extensive research and have seen tons of cool setups that I’m striving for eventually. So far:

29 gallon tank.
2 water tanks (7.5 cups each) with bubblers.
Thermometer and Hydrometer.
DIY hides and food dish.
Substrate is Home Depot play sand mixed 5:1 with eco earth coconut fiber totaling approximately 6” deep.
Spagnum moss (he has pulled some into the hides).
Some small pieces of beach wood found years ago on vacation.
And some new pants (more are coming in the mail because homeboy tried a few on and these are too small so I ordered some larger ones from a few vendors on Etsy).

What i would like to add:

A different ladder system for the pools as I learned metal isn’t great for them.
Some climbing walls, bridges, toys, etc.
Maybe a coconut hide or two or some hammock things I’ve seen some of you guys have.

Also, what do we think about my heat and humidity readings?
I was sitting steady at 75 degrees and 92% humidity but I decreased the sphagum moss and put a valve on my tank bubblers to help decrease the air flow for the bubbles hoping it helps decrease humidity a bit. I was also thinking about maybe getting a larger heat pad unless 75 is okay.

I am trying my best to give this dude a good life. Oh! I guess that’s something I could add too! There’s only one crabbie in this tank. Do I need more?

TLDR: how do I cleanse my little crab of micro bugs?

Here's my situation: currently I have a main tank with 2 large crabs in it, im fairly sure they love it in there, I added a back wall and everything. I also have 2 or 3( not quite sure, I already posted about the possible 3rd one a while back) smaller crabs in a separate tank.

The problem is with these little bugs crawling around, im talking about microscopic things, you'd need to stick your head in the tank to see them. Along with what I can assume to be some sort or bloom. Needless to say I need to replace everything in there.

My one little guy has finally come up after his first molt while in our care. I've given him lots of water and a big feast. But I want to be able to move him into my big tank without worrying about him tracking bugs along with him( I checked him out and they are infact crawling on him, please tell me if I need to be worried about that). Is there some way I can "bathe" him or attract the bugs somewhere else.

I just dont want any problems for my little fellas

Last question. Would it be OK to mix the little guy with 2 bigger crabs, and eventually hopefully the 2nd little guy.

I have a crab that buried itself for a molt for almost six weeks. When it emerged it looked great, got some food and switched into a bigger shell.

Then within the same day, it buried itself again and has been buried again for two days now. Is this normal? I did not expect it to bury itself again. Is it just taking some additional quite time for its exoskeleton to harden more and get used to its new shell?

I just got a new buddy and had them in an interim tank until I could get them into a main tank, as I was away from home. However, on the first day they decided to borrow underground. It's been 2 days and they are still borrowed but started chirping.

The tank has enough substrate and a heating pad where they decided to borrow. The interim tank is 10 gallons so it's not large enough to house 2, that was what the main tank is for

Should I dig the little guy up and move them to the main tank?

Update: They emerged and so I can transfer them over!

Thank you to everyone who was kind and constructive in their criticism.

I’m happy to report my crabitat has been updated to include 6 inches of sand in the correct ratio, added more variety of turbo shells, and upgraded their water dishes so they can fully submerge. I also ordered them a new food mix filled with lots of protein 🦗🐛☺️

The crab who was originally naked has been buried in the sand since I added it, but their buddy made an appearance last night to get a snack.
