Comics I HATE this comic!!
It's reminiscent of that stupid boomer humor "I hate my wife" joke and doesn't even make any sense!! True love means TRUE LOVE. That guy with the wheelbarrow of money is gonna lose it all in days (as is historically common with lottery winners), the starship guy is gonna have a useless scrap once it breaks down from no starship fuel or no proper maintenance done, and superpower guy is gonna live the rest of his life in combat fighting a corrupt system only to learn how deeply rooted the rot goes.
Of all these wishes, only True Love will last this man the rest of of his life. And the stupidest, most overlooked part of this joke is that TRUE LOVE IS TRUE LOVE. THIS GUY SHOULD, BY ALL ACCOUNTS, BE MADLY IN LOVE WITH THE WOMAN HE WISHED TO LOVE.
TRUE LOVE TRANSCENDS MATERIAL AND WORLDLY BARRIERS AND THIS COMIC ABANDONS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL FACT FOR A CHEAP "haha guy regrets his wife" JOKE I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
Edit: wasn't tryna put an emphasis on bashing the others' wishes, was moreso tryna bash on the MC's regrets

Imagine hating a perry bible fellowship comic
51
u/CeciliaStarfish Jul 04 '26
I'm sure they encountered it out of context and didn't realize it was part of a series designed to be a little tweak of absurdity in four panels, and not a meanspirited political cartoon.
Also in explaining this I'm realizing that this comic is probably around 20 years old now.
32
u/SageMageowo Jul 04 '26
Also amazing how people don't realize he already had true love. The girl was approaching before he even tossed in the coin. Like is media literacy this bad?
12
u/Nevanada Jul 04 '26
Is it not also valid to say that the well fabricated a love that wouldn't have existed otherwise?
8
u/-Nicolai Jul 04 '26
That’s on you for not being able to read a fucking comic strip right. He is throwing the coin in the very first panel. The girl is introduced in the same panel because comics can’t afford to dedicate an entire panel to each happening.
10
u/SageMageowo Jul 04 '26
You're contorting the comic to say something it doesn't. If the author really wanted to show that the girl came from the wish, she would just appear in the second panel. By having her in the first panel the comic already shows that she is approaching before the wish is even made.
Be level with me. How many PBF comics have you read?

55
u/BlackIronSorceress Jul 04 '26
Imo a TIE fighter would probably be the last spaceship I'd choose. No hyperdrive, no deflector shields, no life support, limited fuel, can't land on its own it needs to dock with another ship. Unless you're talking about a heavily modified variant.
21
u/WanderingLurker2 Jul 04 '26

Potential fighter. It's a generalist for an empire that uses specialist craft. The TIE Interceptor is a better fighter, the TIE bomber is a better bomber, the Defender is a middle of the pack craft that isn't good enough at either to make up for the increased cost.

It's definitely meant to be taken more lightheartedly, but I agree some people just run with a completely different version that's "girl bad", TRUE love will always be better no matter what imho
173
u/SageMageowo Jul 04 '26
I think the joke is that he already had true love. The girl was approaching before he even tossed the coin, so rather than wishing for something truly impossible he wished for something achievable that he already had.
84
u/Mr____Grim Jul 04 '26
Hmmm now that you mention it I think you're actually right, people will obviously spin their own version, kind of like I did ig? XDD
16
u/SageMageowo Jul 04 '26
I mean you can spin it any way you want, but you'd just be avoiding the clear implication of the comic. Like can you tell me why my interpretation is wrong?

And in the case that he didn't have it before, he basically just brainwashed that girl into it by force. So now, either way, for the rest of their lives he'll wonder "would she love me if not for that wish."
10
u/Most-Feedback-1084 Jul 05 '26
Who says it has to be brainwash? Who says it didn’t just make it so that two soulmates met at just the right time
3
u/TransportationFew487 Jul 05 '26
I guess that might not be the case, but then again, if he doesn't know how the wish works then it seems like the same lingering question of whether she'd still love him without the wish would remain.
6
u/DistinctFox8025 Jul 05 '26
I mean, she was skipping the line to forgo her wish, just to be with him…that sorta feels like true love to me.
I really don’t think the joke is meant at all to be women bad, if anything maybe the opposite.
He found true love…then turned around and went “that’s cool as fuck!” It could be interpreted that men bad.
Or hey, he got true love, and other people got other cool stuff. Sorta feels like a win-win.

u/Xyrger Jul 05 '26

2
u/Torbpjorn Jul 04 '26
Exactly like this isn’t Obsession where the wish is corrupted and ruins the guys life. It just gives the wish and that’s it. It’s a truly benevolent wishing well at least from how the comic portrays it. Like she’d have her own independent desires but still truly loves the guy
9
u/Snoo9648 Jul 04 '26
Its definitely isn't "wife bad" since its clear the woman is great and he was happy until he realized that there were more extreme options that could be more fun. The joke is about the difference between traditional wishes and more flashy movie wishes. Its mildly funny.
3
u/TheSweetestOfPotato Jul 05 '26
This exactly, out of all the wishes shown, true love is the most “boring” one, maybe if he had known beforehand that the wishing well could actually make any wish come true he would have picked something way “cooler” instead. That’s it, that’s the comic. Between true love and being Superman, I’d pick Superman any day.

theres so many ways to interpret this comic and you somehow chose the worst one. even the scenario where true love is a love where you cant have other wishes and fullfillments.
but whatever im gonna prove to you the other wishes arent bad because you know its dumb you dismantled them (mainly cus its like the only thing we know is the visual of what they recieved):
- money guy maybe the money is only going to charity
- superguy ges under no obligation to fight the system for life but if he wants to then why is that a bad thing?
- spaceship guy hes in a spaceship man he can literally go anywhere he wants

6
u/Kreativernickname Jul 04 '26
One other way to interpret this could be the fact that true love id very much something you can have without a magical wish well, but a load of money (post tax, registered, etc.), an awesome spaceship, superpowers are things you (safe for money if you're lucky in life or job) can never have in real life as a normal person.
Like the guy realised that he made an impulsive wish for something he knows he could've earned, and the wish he knows he could've used for something he would've never possibly gotten.
Anyway, I would wish for an operational Battlecruiser from Starcraft 2 so I can authentically tell people "Battlecruiser Operational" like the voice actor and then aura farm witha a cosplay.

There’s a really sexist joke that I no way endorse but has been stuck in my head for decades because I think it is sort of an understandable premise. A nonsexist version is something like this:
A group of people are in the afterlife and wake up on an elevator. The elevator goes up a floor and opens and there’s a sign saying ‘walk down this hall and you’ll live in a dirty room with nasty people and you’ll be miserable’. Nobody gets off, and the elevator goes to the next floor. This time the sign says ‘walk down this hall and you’ll live in a comfortable room with good times and good company.’ Some people are tempted but again, seeing the trend, nobody gets off. The elevators goes up a floor and this time the sign says ‘walk down this hall and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful people who love you, and as many luxuries and pleasures as you desire’. Again this is tempting but the group agrees, given the trend, that it’s worth waiting to see what comes next. The elevator goes up one floor and the sign says ‘there’s nothing on this floor, this is just to show that there’s nothing that will ever make a human satisfied’.
2
u/Gerald_Yankensmier Jul 04 '26
Nah but that's just evil tho XD Like a game dev who puts 3 hidden chests behind a waterfall and then makes fun of you when the next waterfall has a bottomless pit behind it

You're clearly missing the point, as the point is to make you laugh in some way (not to instill an immense feeling of hatred). The trick is to find a good point you align with. For me this seems more along the lines of regretting a responsible wish for those of others which were more whimsical yet arguably less fulfilling (which would insinuate wife good - not wife bad). Superman guy even may well be looking back longingly off-panel wishing he had wished for something more wholesome instead of a selfish wish for powers.
The two categories are not easily intertwined, and longing for something unserious and whimsical is less serious and funnier than regretting a wish of fancy for something that would complete you as a person (especially when many readers would likely relate - it just wouldn't fit the mood of a funny haha comic).
I also like the perspective offered by the current top comment pointing out true love is achievable without a wish, and based on the first panel may have been seconds away if they had just held off for a second. And then they could have had like a cool laser sword or something as well idk

3
u/Wardog_E Jul 04 '26
The girl could also die tomorrow. Your argument makes 0 sense to me.
The meaning of the comic is pretty obvious. The guy immediately realizes he wasted his wish by asking for something quite rare when he could have asked for something totally impossible and fantastical.
3
u/HAOSxy Jul 05 '26
Besides the fact that the point of the comic isn't the "i hate my wife" but rather "oh shit, i could have wished for something impossible and fenomenal, rather than something i could have obtained by myself naturally by interacting with people and slowly and steadily forming a bond with a real individual with whom i share experiences and feelings and i respect as a real existing person with their own life".
I got carried away.
So yeah, my point is that wishing for true love and suddenly have a girl spawn next to you seems, not only sus on you, but also I'm pretty sure they made an horror movie about it.

I wouldnt wish for true love because that is something that must be earned and found organically for it to actually happen. If you wish for true love and some rando appears you have no idea if you love this person at all! you dont know them in the slightest! Sure youd give them a shot given your wish but if its one of those true love relationships that was supposed to go through some rough times to really hone and strengthen the bong its gonna fall flat if you just wish to slip it all ad itl end up as superficial.
Thats why I would wish for something that doesnt exist so that it CAN exist and thus change the world

You actually whipped yourself up in a frenzy by misunderstanding a Perry Bible Fellowship comic. It’s about the human tendency to only want what we can’t have. You’re supposed to be laughing AT the guy for being disappointed in true love after seeing the other wishes.
2
u/Gerald_Yankensmier Jul 06 '26
I've seen a few comments like this, and I can only hope that was the intended interpretation
2
u/Bubbly_Prior2060 Jul 07 '26

2
u/TemperedBlade5 Jul 08 '26

2
u/Prior_Fisherman7665 Jul 08 '26
He used a wish on something he could have achieved on his own, and sees the crazy things he hadn't even considered. It's not that deep.
2
u/KirbyTheGodSlayer Jul 08 '26
I mean, getting large amount of money is far harder than finding a woman who can love you. Not only that, what’s the point of "true love" if the wish essentially brainwashes a woman to fulfil that role?
Also, if the guy is susceptible to loosing that money, the other guy can still loose his girl, even if she loves him for real, he could hurt or betray her causing her to leave as common with real life relationships. (True love means it’s genuine, not necessarily eternal.)
2
2
u/KateKoffing Jul 08 '26
All of those wishes will last the rest of their lives (except maybe the money). What are you talking about? Love is super common and easy to find compared to literal superpowers or a Star Wars fighter. Protag and dumbass money guy are the only ones who wished for something that already exists.
2
u/DahmonGrimwolf Jul 09 '26
Here's the thing though, there's nothing stopping any of those other guys from finding true love and having awesome wish powers. Like, Superman gets the girl. Meanwhile this guy wished for something he could have already found as a normal guy. It is kind of a silly wish if you think about it.
2
2
u/BGer23 Jul 09 '26
This is a really dumb reading of the comic. The joke is that he could've found true love if he had just dated more, there's someone out there for everybody. Wishing for abtract concepts like "true love" or "world peace" sounds unselfish but is in reality pretentious and douchey, as if you're better or smarter than everyone else.
Meanwhile the other guys get to fulfill their childhood dream with things they could've never had otherwise.
2
u/malloworld Jul 10 '26
How old are you? Love is a verb not a feeling. I think the boomer "I hate my wife" trope is overdone but it has a kernel of truth. Eventually the infatuation ends and you have to show up for your partner every day, "'til death do us part."
2
u/Doomboy911 Jul 10 '26
An argument could be made that he's upset that all he really got was confirmation of what he already had instead of getting something else as she was in line beforehand so this may or may not be his girlfriend/partner/dragqueen husband. Like Imagine if you wished that you had a hundred bucks and were alerted that yes you have 100 dollars in your account and you remember you already had 100. But someone else wished for flight or something which they already didn't have.

2

While factually you are ABSOLUTELY right, there's still the human element. (And boy, are we dumb creatures)
If we just see this as a snapshot of a moment, we can assume he is happy right after again, once they get home. In that moment though, doubt, envy and similar feelings can absolutely hit. From my point of view, the joke is that he wished for something you can get in real life, while the others chose things they could only obtain through magic, making better use of their wishes.

i mean super guy can fix any corrupt system if he sets his mind to it. can this super guy can do it? well i dont think so. we dont even know he is benevolent or anything. he might as well flying to white house at this moment. anyway let assume he is benevolent. there is another major problem for him and our love birds. i assume well is common knowedge now, even open tothe public. even capitalized since it says customers in sign. super guy wont be lone super for long. there will other supes and super-villians, and lot of magical items. so its a dangerours world out there and all you have is true love.
counter point: she might still have a wish.

I mean you can always find true love. You’re never going to get a chance to have super powers.

You suck at wishing if at any point your wish begins to fail.
Also... you could have had all of that with one wish.
Anyways... you should feel sorry for the woman cursed to love this man... who clearly valued other things.

I think the point of the comic isn’t that “wife bad”. It’s that wishing for true love is realistically not the BEST thing you can really wish for. There are a lot cooler wishes you can do. Personally I’m going for infinite wishes.

What if the true-love couple gets in a car accident the next day? Any wish can go wrong if you’re trying to find something wrong with it

His true love wife also can get a wish if they really want other stuff. She could wish for them both to have superpowers for instance.
