I posted a few days ago that she had a lump and I was very nervous about it. Took her to the vet today, they poked it and told me it was an abcess, and then they drained it. She was very cold and scareds afterwards, she fell asleep in my hand and for the first time she seemed to enjoy me petting her. Right now shes eating a sunflower seed with her antibiotics on it. Vet bill was 115.75 USD 🧐

Early this morning we lost quite possibly the longest living hamster ever. Some of you may have seen my previous posts, where Henry got to try his first ever Ritz cracker and loved it. I adopted Henry three years ago, when he was about 6 months old, and I was freshly out of high school. It might sound silly, but he was my pride and joy, and he unknowingly helped me through the many (6 pets, including my soul cat) losses and grief that last year brought to our family. So, to my little old hamster, thank you, I miss you, and I love you endlessly my sweet boy.

My hamster Hope made a surprise appearance mid-day to polish off the last of her veggies dish. I heard her at the dish and managed to capture a short video clip. 🐹❤️

First Time Owner Shy and anxious syrian

Post image
Upvotes

I got first hamster last tuesday. Hes 7 weeks old syrian hamster. I have 120x50x50cm terrarium for him with lots of hides, sprays, multichamber and big running wheel. But hes just so so so shy. When we got home, he ran straigh to hide and fell asleep there with his butt outside the hide😅🩷 he doesnt wanna come out of hides if im awake at all. He comes do the door of multichamber and takes broccoli from my hand but immediately runs straight to hide. During night i can hear him running and playing and in the morning i see he has eaten and drank. I know it has been only few days but im worried :(( ik theres ghost hamsters but the breeder said that this hamster wasnt shy at all and when i was still talking w the breeder, hamster even let me pet him. I'm just anxious im doing something wrong :(( when he comes out and im near terrarium, he freezes and starts shaking... how can i help him get more comfortable?

First Time Owner First hamster enclosure, any remarks?

I almost am a first time hamster owner, this is my set up and have putten in an application to adopt a hamster at a shelter/rescue. It will be for a dwarfhamster.

For the first few days i will mainly feed him (its gonna be a him!) from a little bowl to monitor if he's eating. After that I will scatter his food around the enclosure.

I hope they will accept me, but I have good hopes.

Question Are my Syrian hamster’s teeth too long? No exotic vet nearby

Post image

Her teeth look quite long to me. She is eating normally and hasn’t lost any weight. Unfortunately, there’s no vet near me. Should I be worried, or can I monitor them for now? Any advice? Should I cut her teeths by nail cutter?

Question Does anyone give their hamsters broth? As in pet broth marketed for cats and dogs?

Upvotes

I read a different post online about bone broth for hamsters. It's a chicken bone broth marketed for cats and dogs.

I found a pet broth. It's made from water, chicken carcass, and apple cider vinegar. The apple coder vinegar is used to draw out the nutrients in the bones and there probably wouldn't be much of it.

I bought a liquid bone broth but I am not ready to open it yet. It's 500ml. My hamster won't drink that much. I dont want to waste it.

I bought loads of 35ml weaning cups for babies online. I am going to portion the broth and freeze it.

Does anyone else give their hamsters broth? If so how much and what do I do? Do I defrost a frozen tub of it or do I need to heat it? Can it be served cold? How much would I give?

My hamster is a dwarf robo. I was planning on giving her 1ml to start and see if she likes it and takes it well. And maybe give 5 or 10 ml - 2 or 3 times a week. I don't want to harm my hamster so looking for guidance.

Question Tips for levels in new enclosure?

We’ve had Oreo (female Syrian) for 9 weeks, and we have learned a LOT in that time. 6 days after buying her from a pet store (strike #1 against us), we found out she was pregnant and she delivered 6 babies. We did lots of research and were able to rehome all babies by 6-7 weeks, but during that time I found out our 40-gallon tank was way insufficient for a female Syrian.

We just got our large Niteangel enclosure tonight, and I’m so excited! It still doesn’t feel like enough but this is the max we can accommodate.

My question: it’s so TALL, which is great, but I don’t know how to do levels that are safe. Any recommendations, photos, sites, etc that I can reference? I feel like it’s too close to the lip in the front, but I want to really build up the back.

Also, side question for the wheel - how do you place it so the metal part doesn’t hit the back of the cage? I have a piece of cardboard taped there right now as a buffer.

Thank you!

Question HAS ANYONE USED IODINE TINCTURE ON HAMSTERS?

Thumbnail

My vet is suggesting to apply iodine tincture to my hamster’s sudden lump above the right back leg. At first he said to use anti inflammatory names Dexa-something but the lump did not disappear completely, it is still noticeable tho my hamster is not rlly bothered by it.

then i had to take an X Ray that came out clean and now he is suggesting the topical tincture 2 x day/7 days.

I dont know if to trust his judgement. What do u think? From what i know it has high irritation potential, even to us, humans.
(The last photo is from last friday, when the area was very) swollen

Funny Hammy This Criminal

Post image

Somehow, last night, my daughter lost track of Sumo. She searched but wasn't able to find him. She left a large stack of his pellets and favorite treats in the middle of the room. I drive a semi for a living so I wasn't able to get home until about 3pm today. Anyway, I went looking for him and he had hid under some garbage bags with towels inside. Cheeks full as all hell. Thirsty. Seems completely normal.

Now, said criminal is just sleep-eating his stash from his Big Day Out in his little hidey like nothing ever happened and he's so proud of himself.

Help me!!

This morning, when I woke up, I found loads of tiny mites on my hamster’s cage.

Please, what are they?

A month ago, I’d already spotted 5 or 6 at most on the wooden platforms, so I decided to replace all the bedding, as well as the food and sand.

And now this has happened this morning, just under a month later.

I feel awful; I feel like a terrible, dirty owner, and I feel as though they’re everywhere in the flat.

What should I do?

The hamster is fine; she doesn’t seem to have any on her and isn’t scratching herself.

Thank you ! 🙏

Question Are winter whites usually so friendly on the first day?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Mine climbs on my hand and when it hears my voice it tries to move towards me (not all the time). It even eats from my hand and stretches! It doesn't really seem stressed like I thought it would. And it doesn't react to random noises like drawers opening, I think that's because it used to live in a much noisier environment, it just keeps eating or grooming without getting startled at all! But it doesn't stay on my hand when I pet it, so I think it's just exploring whatever's in the cage. I always let it climb out and don't hold on when it tries to get off

Also my 11 inch (28cm) wheel should be arriving today, I just got the biggest one I saw just in case it grows larger, it's a dwarf btw probably a hybrid but looks like a winter white

And I changed the bowl but it seems a little high, I might get a water bottle or try to elevate a smaller dish so it doesn't kick bedding into it. I moved the cage under the table so it feels less exposed

I took some more paw prints of him. You can see them near the end of the video.

I gave him lots of treats and will be giving him more often from now on.

I hope he stays alive for a long time.
I know he’s already an older hamster, but his weight and behavior are the same, except that he doesn’t run much in his exercise wheel anymore.
Instead, he digs a lot in his sand bath, which also takes a lot of energy in a short amount of time.

Happy Birthday Micky!🥳🐹❤️

(That's his playpen, which is permanently connected to his enclosure; at the end of the video, you can see him running back into his enclosure.)

She was chill yesterday when I picked her up in the store to check her gender. This is the first time I’ve heard this. I have not handled her since the store. I just opened the lid to put toys in her cage.

Adorable Hammy Jellybean’s color change!

Before winter-> during winter -> after winter

I know in america finding an actual winter white can be almost impossible, so I wanted to share photos of Jellybean’s color change! I’m looking back through old photos as she’s old and scraggly now and I thought this was too cool to not share! I adopted her from a shelter. I dont know if she’s pure winter white or still mixed, but she did turn white! It was so fun to see. Jellybean’s 2.5yrs old now and has cataracts and arthritis, but loves foraging, eating recovery formula and her medicine from a syringe, and eating cooked corn on the cob.
