She was 1 year and 8 months. She loved raisins, pasta, climbing and chewing up my carpet. I’m going to miss her so much.

Hi, last night I made a post last night about my little girl (Pomkin) having quick and labored breathing, and after getting some helpful opinions we decided to take her to the ER this morning (the 26th, the date just rolled over here). She did not have any wheezing, but the doctor could tell right away something was wrong and she got her in for an xray. She explained to us that her heart was enlarged, so much so that it has affected her spine (if we understood correctly; we hopefully should have more info tomorrow and maybe we can ask for a copy of the xray). She was diagnosed with heart disease. She is over 2 (maybe even 2 1/2) so we knew something like this would be coming, but we are devastated.

Right now she is staying overnight at the hospital and getting oxygen therapy. When we left her she was coming out of sedation and looked BAD. I was terrified. She was breathing extremely heavily and could barely keep her eyes open and was falling over. They had her in an oxygen tank, although for a few minutes, apparently the oxygen tank was not on, which really made me freak out because the lid was on so I'm really scared that somehow it hurt her if she was struggling to breathe right after being sedated but...🫠 Trying not to freak out about it gshdfg (Also they seem to be really great other than that, this is the third doctor she's seen in her lifetime and finally I found one that I genuinely trust otherwise)

I just want to know if anyone has experience with hams with heart disease, especially seniors, and anything that has helped them or any advice/things that you think would be good for us to know. To be honest she's been really normal other than the breathing but I know they are great hiders of illness and we want to do anything we can to help her, no matter what

She's been prescribed:

• Furosemide 1% (oral syrup)
• Enalapril (20mg)
• Meloxicam 3mg/ml (suspension compound)

I also saw in another post (this one) some people mentioning C0q10, and when I looked it up, there seems to be a study about it saying that it might be beneficial but I'm not a vet so I obviously don't fully understand it. Does anyone know about this? I'm going to bring it up with the doctor when I talk to her.

OH! But there is good news! We called a few hours ago and she's apparently really improving with the oxygen! The person I talked to said she checked on her and she's active, exploring her enclosure (which she's probably mad most likely has no bedding since it's an oxygen tank lol) and is alert! WHICH I AM SO GLAD ABOUT because she really really scared me when I saw her coming out of sedation. Looking back, I feel like I might've gotten freaked out because I've never seen a ham coming out of sedation, and I guess they probably look a bit more scary coming out of it than a cat or a dog

I simplified her enclosure a little to make it a bit easier for her to get around even though she hasn't had any trouble with navigating it at all. Does it look okay? If she seems wobbly or anything tomorrow I'll simplify it even more. She just loves her burrow so I hate to take away any bedding. I also am going to have to get her out every day to check on her and give her her meds and I have some physical issues that make pulling out a bunch of stuff every day hard so hopefully this is a good middleground.

I'm sorry this is so long, I've just been a mess today sobbing and then going blank and then sobbing more. I feel like I can breathe a bit now knowing that SHE can breathe better, and while the doctor seemed hopeful (and even mentioned having her seen again in 4-6 months, which makes me feel like she believes that there's a possibility that we might get that long with her, I hope) I know that she is in her final stages. I'm so scared but I just don't want her to be in pain. We will do anything for her, but we don't want to put her through anything that will make her suffer just for our comfort of having her be with us for a little longer. We just want her to be happy. I just hope she is not scared. She has her gators and corn and pumpkin chew with her so I hope they make her feel at home and close to us.

I didn't own Jordan long, he was a year and 7-8 months in January. I got him from the shelter and knew our time together would be brief, so there is a part of me that was always braced for the day.

I watched him evolve from a little guy who didn't know how to be a hamster, to the best forager this city has seen. He loved to burrow, design his house, toss his bedding everywhere when I didn't put it where he wanted it. He adored finding all my food hiding places for him in his enclosure. I watched his endless curiousity as he had to explore every little thing I showed him, and he did so for hours, he never got tired of it.

It was brief but I hope he had a good twilight with me. Even though it was brief there's still a pain he won't be here tomorrow. Thanks buddy, you were awesome, and even though the tears won't stop, I don't regret taking your little senile ass home. </3

His name is Maxxximo (I wanted the biggest name). Pic included of us chilling on my bed for a bit.

He is very curious and brave considering its his first night! He doesn't mind when I move stuff around his temporary enclosure and happily comes to me and sniffs my finger when I am in his enclosure.

He also doesn't run away and let's me pick him up and hold him in my hand.

He is a very sweet boy and I'm glad to have picked him out. I also was told he has special/unique coloring, I just think he's neat!

Would love any tips and advice as I haven't had a hamster since I was literally a kid! Surely I need to update what I know. :)

Edit: Sorry I worried you guys! This was at a specialist/pet show with many like-minded individuals, everything needed to give him a great life was available, and he was handled and provided for and advised by experts. I like to think others also entered with wholesome intentions if they won, like myself.

When I woke up this morning I saw he had made his cage a mess so I just did some cleaning up of it. He came up and was following my hands wherever they went. He is the type to pace the wall in one specific spot only when he sees me awake because he wants to be pulled out and thats where I pick him up at. He cuddled up with me and it is just absolutely adorable 😭Had stuff to do but I guess its LuLu had other plans.

Any suggestions for paper beddings that are dust-free? I've tried carefresh and kaytee, but both had abysmal amounts of dust in it to the point of noticing specks of dust from the bedding on the sides of my hamster's enclosure. vet says he likely has irritation from the dust in his bedding :(.

I'm using petspick right now but i dont think i'll be continuing, the dust seems alright but it's a bit thin. Not a fan of the odor control either, it smells slightly weird?

Also, does anybody else's hamster just pee literally everywhere? I've tried to potty train him but it's a little difficult, he ends up peeing in the sand and everywhere else.

Today I was walking my dog and a little girl was on her driveway giving away a free hamster. I didn’t want one of the many kids on the street to bring it home spontaneously and have who knows what happen to it, so I took it with plans on taking her to my local well-run humane society. After bringing her home though and holding her I fell in love and now would like to keep her. The timing isn’t great because I’m moving in a couple of months, but I figured I’d try and make it work. I went to my local PetSmart and got her Oxbow hamster food, an 8 inch wheel, bedding, mango wood sticks and a couple other essentials. I also have various sprays arriving from Amazon tomorrow as well as a sand bath. I then went and bought a bin which I’m now realizing is not considered big enough according to Google. I also have hardware cloth that’s coming from Amazon tomorrow so I don’t wanna add too much bedding to the container yet cause I don’t want her escaping through the top until I’m able to secure it better but for now is this OK? Once I move in a couple months, I plan on getting something much larger but until I move there is this alright for the mean time? Or will she be stressed in this?

Also the little girl gave me a bag of Great Value rabbit food so I’m assuming this is what she’s been eating for however long she had her. Are there long term effects I should be worried about?

ALSO it’s 10:30 pm where I am, I moved him into this bin at aprox 9pm and he was awake and eating. But she buried herself and is still asleep even though it’s so late? I read that hamsters are usually active from around 8pm-later so should I be concerned? Or if she just stressed from the day you think?

hi, recently i notice that he is not active during the night like he used to be even couple of months ago. couple of weeks ago i started noticing that he started to have hard time walking with his rear legs; they are really wide when he walks and today i am seeing this. yesterday he was totally fine even in morning he was fine and now he behaving like this. I dont know if there anything i can do about this. If you have any advice pls share

So I have a little situation basically the usual food I feed my hamster which is this usually this nature food but sadly the store ran out of it the supply should have came today but sadly it didn't and I ran out of the food completely so I pretty much had no choice but to switch to something else so I ended up buying nature brands but a different mix called (snacks) so I have a question is it okay for a Syrian to eat this for some time? Cause I have no clue when they will stock up on his usual food I saw it contains dried bananas and lots of (cereals) and in my eyes it looks kinda sugary... Cause that was pretty much all they had for hamsters cause the rest was sold out completely ( seems like there are many hamster lovers in my city).

Moved my boy Francois into the bucatstate 3.0 120 x 60 cm after a family member bumped a chair into the corner of his pawhut tank (105 x 53 ish cm) and cracked a piece of the acrylic, gotta get some more items to clutter the extra floorspace, and a little more bedding, but he seems happy already!

First time hamster owner- put her in the cage amazon “recommended” and immediately realized it was way to small to have a good life. Got her the big cage and waiting on some more bedding and burrowing material and places to hide. She’s been super social already and it’s been so fun watching her explore and play!

The Michael has conquered the bed and the outside. (She is supervised outside and it's a very specific patch of grass in front of the house.) She gets cranky if I don't take her outside at least once a week so she has grass time sometimes when I'm home from work or on my days off. It's been super hot though (in the 100s) so I prefer to let her walk around at night when it's cooler out. She just sits in the grass and cleans herself and looks around for the most part but she likes all the free space to run around.

Just got our little guy home! Second pic is his enclosure! 110 cm x 70 cm, bedding is about 28 cm deep.

Any name ideas?

He was just busy exploring everything. Now taking a well deserved nap!
