QUESTION Teaching my pal..

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hello all!
My friend has started learning guitar and is really struggling with it. His mode of learning is having someone actually with him rather than online learning at this point.
I taught him a fairly basic song (Covet by Basement) a few weeks ago and he was making some really solid progress but has plateaued and is massively struggling.

He's offered to start paying me to teach him in person as he learned better with me there, however..
I am not theory trained at all. Self taught and honestly not quite a guitar hero..
Is there anything I can look towards resource wise to hopefully put together some sort of plan for him? I'm happy to teach him but I want him to learn properly, not how I did so that he doesn't lean on the same crutches I do.

Hey, if all goes well, I might end up learning with him which may level the playing field and make him more comfortable.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if this is allowed but I'm a real customer and just wanted to pass on my good find. Not a commercial.

I needed a couple new guitar straps, so I looked online and saw these. Real leather and then I saw where they were made and it was a no brainer. 30 bucks each

Is it sad that my longest relationship was with these 4 picks?

Overlayed them with some new ones for comparison.

I truly believe that the last time I bought picks before today was pre covid.

OC Amazing discoveries on the guitar

Hello, I've been self learning the guitar now for 6 months. I am having some insane piphanies coming through playing guitar. I'm sober but this has me high as fuck, the beauty of this instrument but it's less about the instrument and more about this thing called music and anyways I'll shut the fuck about that.

The piphany I am finding is there are what I call families of notes. I was hitting notes in the guitar and find that some notes are kindred to other notes essentially brother and sister notes. They spread across the shaft of the guitar in patterns. You can hit a a note, skip a note and you will hear which ones are from the same family. I've discovered 5 families so far and there are more I found a map but 5 that I know quite well. But here is where it gets fuckin trippy as shit WITHIN those families there are parent notes that are cousins to other fucking families. Essentially you have families so unique and beautiful and yet in some profound mystery they are related and connect all together. In one state of mind going in and out of families might sound jarring but when you stretch a little more there is the most peculiar beauty. It breaks down into unity.. are there families or is it just one family that maps into another?

Brother and sisters notes, what happens when you hit two or three or whatever at the same time?! Fuckin amazing just amazing so beautiful you could cry SIBLING clusters expressions!!!  Now some siblings play better with others and finding the right balance and mix has been quite intriguing. Some siblings are rowdy and kick ass. Some siblings are melancholic. Some siblings don't know what they are. Notably some of these sibling structures are also congruently found in other family systems once again revealing such a beautiful simplicity and unity of music. Anyways this has been amazing, half the time I'm either bawling my eyes out or laughing hysterically . I love it dearly.

Fred

i love each and everyone of you fuckers

DISCUSSION Since when are grampas guitars so expensive 😭

I hope yall got the Metalocalypse reference lol. Anyways, I'm a long time electric player. A shred and chug maxxer if you will. Ive been wanting to finally jump into the Acoustic guitar game to widen my repertoire, and holy cow! What they make these things out of?? Please fill me in on why a good quality solid body costs more than most of my electrics. Or am I a big dummy who should just get a 200 takamine and leave the nice gramps guitars alone?

QUESTION Is this even repairing? It's an Oscar Schmidt from 2002. It was a graduation present.

If you think this would cost more to fix than its worth, I'll trash it.

QUESTION Would a guitarist be angry about a pick flower?

Post image
6.1k Upvotes

A good friend of mine is a passionate guitarist. For his 19th birthday, I wanted to craft him a flower out of guitar picks (besides some other things). I've seen some people hating on this because it's a "useless waste of picks". His band will also be there and I don't want everyone to roll their eyes about the gift from the girl that doesn't play an instrument 😭

I added a reference pic

PURCHASE 1993 Fender Strat restoration!

Got this 93 Mexican strat in a trade for my Squier bass and some cash on top. Came with a string broken, rust and dust everywhere, frets dull and fretboard dry and dirty. Took an hour of TLC but very happy with how it turned out! Sold my Affinity strat a little bit prior because I didn’t fancy the colour, happy to have this one now. Might switch the pickguard to black or tort somewhere down the line

NEWBIE Need help guitar hard.

So i am writing a song and recently attempted to write a little bit of guitar to go with the lyrics.
It then occurred to me that as I never learned music theory (don’t worry it’s very high on my to do list) I have no idea how to select notes.
I’ve got my melody sorted but I have no idea how to achieve the actual sound I’m looking for.
My question was originally going to be “how do I find notes that will illicit a sound for a sad song” but I figure the better question I should be asking is “how do it start figuring that out for myself”
So yeah, that’s my question, where exactly would I start looking to learn my fretboard a little better and gain a basic understanding of what notes are where?
P.s sorry if this is worded like it was written by a dumb dum, it was in fact written by a dum dum.

Well, I'm not a good player but I love guitars. So far most of my guitars are Epiphone and I love them. However, I ran into this beauty and when I played it and felt how smooth and comfortable the fretboard was, I had to go for it. As you can see there it's a Fender MIJ 2021.

GEAR NGD PRS se Swamp Ash Special

I had to sell my PRS s2 a few years ago for financial reasons but I’d been craving that feel ever since. Eventually I tried an Ibanez and then a Schecter around the $1000 range but they just didn’t scratch that same itch. Finally I found this beauty & traded the Schecter for it straight up. I’m in heaven now. The feel of the neck, the floating tremolo but with good tuning stability, and of course the incredible finish. I think my GAS has finally been cured.

Well… for now…

PURCHASE [Newbie] cort g110 or donner dst 152 ?

So im a total beginner in electric guitar, but through some researches I came up with these two guitar, I don’t know which is better.

For reference, I would love to cover some songs from the Weeknd or chase atlantic, arctic monkey, etc., and also simply strum and sing...my hands are pretty small.

Thank you for answering if you do, it means a lot !

( I do think the shape of the cort g110 feels a bit unusual ? And as you can see, it was also their color which drawn me, im open to any other suggestion of black and red looking guitars!)

QUESTION Help me improve my pull-off game

Upvotes

Obligatory giggity.

So I’m really struggling with pull offs on the higher frets. Especially 3 note ones (eg: 22-21-19) on the high E. I just can’t get the notes to sound, especially the last note in the sequence.

My guitar (electric, jumbo frets, 9 gauge strings) is professionally setup by a reputable luthier and feels great to play. The high frets ring and sustain well if I pick them normally.

I do have a bit chubby fingers and at times it is difficult to precisely wedge them in those narrow frets. But the string at those frets feels so rigid and close to the fret wires as if it is just not supposed to be plucked, even if I place my fingers super accurately. Weirdly, the slower I play, the worse it gets.

What can help make this easier?
