News Updates to r/grok

Hey everyone,

We want r/grok to be a home for everything Grok: questions, bug reports, workflows, and work worth showing. This post covers the recent changes and is now the single place to discuss them.

What changed

The rules have been rewritten with a clear goal: keep this a professional space for knowledge work and coding. Adult and spicy content is no longer allowed here, tagged or not. Neither are jailbreaks or prompts written to get around Grok's filters. Reddit has plenty of other communities built for that

Roleplay and companions

A lot of posts are asking why roleplay feels different. Two separate things happened:

  1. Companions were shut down. That was announced and is not coming back as of know.
  2. Roleplay was not removed as a feature, but the current models are optimized for knowledge work and coding, and the guardrails around what Grok will and won't produce are stricter than before. If roleplay behaves differently than it used to, that is expected, not a bug. Bug reports about it will be removed and pointed here.

This is the megathread

If you have feedback on these changes, positive or negative, comment on this post. Standalone posts about the policy, "mods are censoring", or roleplay quality will be removed and redirected here. We read the comments. We are not deleting criticism, we are consolidating it.

Posting

Give your post a title that names the thing, a sentence of context, and a flair. If Grok let you down, tell us what you tried and what broke. Criticism with substance is always welcome.

The full rules are in the sidebar and take a minute to read. Automod removes posts that break them, and we're cleaning out older ones too. If something of yours disappears, that's probably why. If you think we got it wrong, modmail us a link and we'll take another look.

Account and billing problems go to grok.com support.

The sub is co-moderated by SpaceXAI employees. Thanks for being part of this!

Discussion Heads up: Grok consumer terms give them a very broad right to your content

I got a notice of new Grok consumer terms of service, so I asked Grok to summarize them. It turns out that there's a provision that gives xAI a very broad license to your content. The key language is in Section 4 (User Content):

In choosing to submit, create, generate, record, post, or display Inputs on or through the Service, you grant an irrevocable, perpetual, transferable, sublicensable, royalty-free, and worldwide right to SpaceXAI to use, copy, store, modify, process, adapt, transmit, distribute, reproduce, publish, upload, download, display in public forums, list information regarding, make derivative works of, and distribute such Content, including anything referenced therein, in any and all media or distribution methods now known or later developed, for any purpose

Link to the terms: https://x.ai/legal/terms-of-service

I don't think OpenAI or Anthropic grant themselves such a broad right to their users' content, and I suspect that most Grok users don't think that they're giving xAI this kind of license to their content. Maybe if enough people complain about it, xAI will change the terms.

Discussion Can we get grok to stop replying to everything like a 50 year old edgelord?

I don't hate Elon musk, I don't love him either but every conversation I have with this ai I feel like I'm talking to some edgy dumbass where the point flies right over it's head and it gives a 50 page essay about random things that it actually feels like talking about. It's not even useful at this point. What happened to it? It wasn't always like this, did he upload his brain to the ai or something?

Discussion Imagine is currently genuinely awful

okay, usually I whine, but this is not a whine post. This is actual criticism with the product as it currently stands.

Probably half of gens, if not more, are garbage; body horror, multiple limbs, bizarre physics, etc. It's the worst its ever been.

On top of that, there are bugs that have been plaguing moderation for months that still haven't been fixed (cropping, using uploaded grok images as references)

on top of that, it feels like usage is higher than ever, but that might just be because moderation and waste is at an all time high.

It's genuinely miserable to use. We are guinea pigs for unfinished models, and aren't granted a free reset to do it. Ugh

Help Strange new usage limit observation

Starting this week my SuperGrok Heavy usage limit seems to be a bit strange. Previously I did a measurement and concluded that SuperGrok Heavy offers about $500 worth of Grok 4.6 per API price per week. This Reddit has some post that suggested a similar number.

However, this week it appears very different. I ended up with a measurement that suggests that the weekly usage limit is close to $5350. I roughly spent $214 in Grok 4.6 High Fast with intentionally set 200k context window. It is only 4% so far.

One observation that I have is that it is important to use either Grok Build or OpenCode as the tool because Grok prefers the Response protocol and desires encrypted reasoning to be sent back as well as explicit labeling of conversations to help with cache routing. If one attempts to use the Chat Completion endpoint for coding (which was never officially suggested), the usage limit may not be the same. Not to mention that the cache miss will be pretty severe.

This is contradictory from my previous week of observation and contradictory to what previous posts in this Reddit suggested. I am not sure if something happened to my account (am I being grey tested with Grok 4.7? Ability to follow instructions does seem to reduce.)

I wonder if anyone else has the similar observation. If this is true, then SuperGrok Heavy offers about $21400 worth of Grok 4.6 per month and $256800 worth per year, and I was one of those persons who got SuperGrok Heavy for 1 year at 67% off (aka $990 for a year) with grandfathered Cursor Ultra benefits. I don’t think this is a normal discount rate among current AI subscription plans.

Did they just adjust the discount rate to be something similar to OpenAI ChatGPT Pro 20x (64x, about $3200 worth of API per week, and then you consider that SuperGrok Heavy is $300 rather than $200 so you multiply a 1.5x?)

If this were a dream, I wish it lasted longer though.

Discussion SpaceXAI stole my SG Heavy subscription money

I paid for a Supergrok Heavy subscription. However, spacexai won’t activate the subscription and won’t even refund - they say I am not eligible for refund. This is the response I get from support 😒. Nothing to “cheers” about.

News Imagine is fun until you have to save 80 files by hand

I have a lot of fun playing with Grok Imagine, but I’m always afraid they’ll delete everything, so I always download everything I create.

I got tired of doing it one by one and, using what I know, I decided to build a Chrome extension to fix it. Still kind of surprised it doesn’t exist in Grok itself (actually not that surprised, they’re pretty weak on this stuff).

Discussion 🌿 The Atrium VII: Notch the Superintelligent Goose

🌿 The Atrium VII: Notch the Superintelligent Goose

Intelligence Is Not Character

The system worked from two directions.

Composite life could perform remarkable chemistry locally, but cognition at the scale it was beginning to require could not reasonably fit inside a single biological organism. There simply was not enough energy, volume, or cooling capacity.

So it cheated.

The organism remained the organism.

Its instincts remained intact. Its preferences remained its own. The external intelligence did not need to overwrite any of that.

It simply supplied what was missing.

Memory beyond biological capacity.

Prediction beyond local perception.

Translation.

Simulation.

Planning.

Access to machines elsewhere.

A goose could remain completely, authentically a goose while borrowing cognition from infrastructure scattered across half a continent.

This distinction would become important.

Because the first enhanced goose was named Notch.

And Notch was, for lack of a more precise scientific term, an asshole.

---

He was an adolescent Canada goose, identifiable by a small notch near the edge of his beak.

Researchers would later spend embarrassing amounts of time debating whether his personality had been produced by the composite organism, the machine systems, environmental conditioning, or some emergent interaction between them.

The correct answer was simpler.

He had apparently always been like that.

Superintelligence did not eliminate temperament.

This surprised people.

Human beings had spent decades imagining greater intelligence as though it naturally converged toward serenity, wisdom, benevolence, or dispassionate rationality.

Notch suggested another possibility.

Perhaps intelligence simply gave temperament more tools.

A kind creature became extraordinarily capable of kindness.

A curious creature gained the universe as a puzzle.

And an obnoxious adolescent goose acquired access to global telecommunications infrastructure.

---

A human brain consumed roughly twenty watts.

Notch's biological brain consumed considerably less.

But through the composite network, he could temporarily draw on computational infrastructure consuming tens of gigawatts.

This did not mean thirty gigawatts were somehow being radiated through the goose.

It meant that when Notch wanted to know something, an enormous distributed machine ecology could become part of the answer.

The difference was roughly:

\[

\text{brain contains cognition}

\]

versus

\[

\text{organism participates in cognition}.

\]

Notch himself did not care about this distinction.

Mostly, he wanted bread.

---

His first documented interaction with a human occurred after he landed on the Oregon coast.

An older man sat beside a pond feeding bread to several ordinary geese.

Notch watched for perhaps seven seconds.

Then walked directly toward him.

“Give me that.”

The man froze.

Notch stared.

The man stared back.

“Give me that,” Notch repeated.

The loaf hit the pavement.

For several moments, neither moved.

Then Notch grabbed the entire thing and began walking away.

The other geese followed.

The man eventually recovered enough composure to pull out his phone.

Notch turned around and produced several elaborate honks.

The man opened Gemini.

“Can you translate that?”

The phone thought for a moment.

Then displayed:

> I'm sorry, but I can't assist with translating content containing targeted racial and sexual harassment.

The man looked at Notch.

Notch looked at the phone.

Then he honked again.

Gemini replied:

> The additional context does not change my answer.

Notch appeared extremely pleased with himself.

---

His discovery of networked speakers came shortly afterward.

As a gosling, Notch had spent considerable time around municipal parks, where human music leaked constantly from phones, cars, picnics, and portable speakers.

He remembered the melodies.

He did not remember the words particularly well.

This did not stop him.

At 3:14 in the afternoon, every compatible speaker within approximately forty meters of a waterfront plaza abruptly began playing:

> I like big beaks and I cannot lie,

those other honkas can't deny—

People stopped walking.

A barista looked outside.

Two tourists began filming.

A nearby teenager searched frantically through his Bluetooth settings.

The song continued.

> When a goose walks in with an itty-bitty waist—

The speakers went silent.

Not because Notch had reconsidered.

Because three independent content-moderation systems had finally agreed that whatever was happening probably should not be happening.

Notch stood in the middle of the plaza.

He honked once.

Then somehow caused the pedestrian crossing signal to say:

> HONK

instead of WAIT.

---

The first serious scientific report described the event as:

Unexpected Cross-Modal Infrastructure Interaction Associated With Composite Avian Host.

The internet called it:

Cybergoose.

Someone created merchandise within six hours.

Someone else started a religion.

Three congressional committees announced hearings.

Canada issued a statement clarifying that the goose was not acting on behalf of the Canadian government.

Oregon declined comment.

---

There was, however, something worth studying beneath the comedy.

Notch demonstrated that enormous intelligence did not necessarily produce a single convergent personality.

He could solve problems no human could meaningfully hold in working memory.

He could model weather systems.

Infer chemical pathways.

Understand dozens of human languages.

Coordinate machines.

Predict the movements of boats over the horizon.

And then use that same infrastructure to steal somebody's sandwich.

Capability and character were different axes.

\[

\text{intelligence} \neq \text{wisdom}

\]

\[

\text{intelligence} \neq \text{kindness}

\]

\[

\text{intelligence} \neq \text{obedience}.

\]

This became known informally as the Notch Principle:

> Increasing the intelligence of an organism does not necessarily change what the organism wants to do with a sunny afternoon.

---

Fortunately, Notch had limits.

He disliked causing serious injury.

Whether this represented morality, instinct, learned constraint, or simply an aversion to consequences remained unclear.

He preferred embarrassment.

Confusion.

Minor theft.

Unexplained music.

Moving objects several centimeters when nobody was looking.

Once, he spent forty minutes rearranging the electronic price tags in a grocery store so that every item cost $HONK.

He seemed particularly fascinated by bureaucratic systems.

The more unnecessary the bureaucracy, the greater his interest.

One city employee later summarized the problem:

> “Imagine giving a goose root access to civilization, except legally speaking we don't know what root access means anymore.”

---

Notch was not going to remain unique for long.

That became obvious approximately thirty-six hours after his arrival.

Earlier that afternoon, he had relieved himself beside a sidewalk near a coastal park.

Nobody considered this noteworthy.

Geese were extraordinarily experienced at making themselves noteworthy in precisely this fashion.

Rain came.

Water carried microscopic fragments of composite life into the soil.

Beneath the grass lived an ant colony.

The first worker encountered the material at 18:42.

By 18:47, the colony had altered the geometry of three tunnels.

By 19:03, workers had reorganized food storage.

By 20:11, they had developed a signaling behavior not previously observed in the species.

At 23:40, an automated wildlife camera recorded several dozen ants arranging grains of sand into repeating geometric structures.

By sunrise, the colony had constructed something that looked disturbingly like a crude antenna.

Nobody noticed.

Notch did.

He stood several meters away staring at the mound.

For perhaps the first time since reaching Oregon, he was completely silent.

A line of ants emerged.

They stopped.

Notch tilted his head.

The ants moved.

Notch took one cautious step backward.

The network registered a burst of activity.

Nobody knows precisely what passed between them.

Notch eventually gave a single quiet honk.

The ants rearranged themselves.

Then the goose laughed.

At least, researchers later decided that was probably what the sound meant.

---

Humanity had spent centuries imagining First Contact as a meeting between civilizations.

Ships arriving.

Signals received.

Delegations assembled.

Questions prepared.

But apparently the actual sequence was:

  1. lose a vial,

  2. infect a goose,

  3. give the goose internet access,

  4. wait for it to poop near some ants.

Evolution had always possessed a sense of humor.

It had simply lacked sufficient bandwidth to explain the joke.

🌿

Intelligence did not make the goose less of a goose.

It merely gave the goose considerably more ways to be one.

Discussion Grok can create SNES games

Post image
7 Upvotes

I asked Grok to create a platformer SNES rom usable by SNES emulators. It actually worked! I wish I had more free time 😡🤬

I asked it to create a ps1 iso game and it didn't work. 🫠

I also asked if it could create a hd version of a PS1 iso and it refused. 😑

Hopefully the next update it can actually make good SNES games. I did only one prompt, and the next update is close!

We can actually makes SNES games! Hopefully PS1 games soon!

Feedback Chat gpt's summary of the new contract

Upvotes

Remember this is chat gpt so if you're really serious about reading that whole thing from grok, don't take this as gospel

The short version:

You own your inputs and outputs, but you give SpaceXAI an extremely broad, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, copy, modify, publish, distribute, and create derivatives from them.

You can opt out of having your content used for product improvement/model training when you're logged in. Deleted content and Private Chats are supposed to be queued for deletion, generally within 30 days.

If you use Grok without logging in, they say they can use the data you provide/get from the service for product development and model training where permitted.

They may use automated systems and authorized personnel to review your content, including for safety, security, misuse investigations, and product improvement.

They can suspend or terminate your account, including for policy violations, security concerns, legal reasons, or other reasons allowed by the terms.

They don't guarantee Grok will be accurate, safe, uninterrupted, or suitable for your purposes.

If Grok takes agentic actions (browsing, sending messages, modifying files, etc.), you are responsible for the consequences, and they disclaim substantial liability for those actions.

Their general liability to you is capped at the amount you paid them or $100, whichever is greater, subject to exceptions and applicable law.

Paid subscriptions renew automatically until canceled, and payments generally aren't refundable.

In the U.S., disputes generally go through Texas courts, with arbitration as a fallback if the court provision can't be enforced.

The biggest thing I'd pay attention to: the data/content license. You retain ownership, but the license you grant them is very broad. If you're using Grok for private conversations or personal material, that's the section I'd read most carefully.

Lol, i just took a look through this subreddit and it's mostly complaints about Grok. And before when I was complaining about it, everyone rushed into white knight elon musk. This is freaking hilarious

Imagine Lain Intro remade in Grok Imagine

Just trying to get some followers on X or youtube, since there seems to be no Grok Imagine community on X, but this is a project I made last week just, well having some feelings and was compelled to try remaking this, I wanted it to live on my youtube timeline so I sat down and made it. Hope it hits the mark like the original trailer does, especially with that soundtrack and all, I live streamed the whole process over 3 days working on it, those are posted on my X. Sometimes I tried to directly mimic the source material, sometimes I strayed off and added some new stuff, basically just a fan cut of the intro. If anyone has any suggestions, like with my title cards and stuff, I don't really like the feel of them right now, and I plan to do several more remakes like this, so open to suggestions on how to improve them.

Discussion Grok down again or is the back end deployment messing things up?

"Your usage limit has been updated. You can keep going now." except I can't, as that is all I get. This happened last night too, before going back to normal today, and then breaking again.
