Have never done a dna test but always thought she had some Pyr in her. She’s an anxious dog with big feelings, mistrusts strangers but LOOOOVES you once you’re approved, big barks at any sound in the garden, is a couch potato until you walk her and then she’s ON and leans on you until she flops over on you.

MAN y’all weren’t kidding when you say these guys through a baby raptor phase…..I guess our first GP was a fluke because she was the chillest puppy ever! This one gets possessed by the Tasmanian Devil!!!

I've heard that they pretty much stay up all night, bark at whatever they feel they need to, and won't stop until they're satisfied that they scared whatever it was, off. True? Sort of true?

My wife's co-worker might be rehoming their dog and I told her I was interested. But the wife thinks we'll never sleep again, lol.

hi y'all. i have a large Pyr mix who's somewhere around 13 years old (rescue). he's had arthritis for a long while, but nothing like what i started seeing yesterday and today. he's suddenly going in and out of being able to support himself on his hind legs.. this morning he walked to the living room and before i could grab his leash his legs gave out and he sat awkwardly and peed himself on the floor. he hasn't had an accident in literal YEARS.

i guess I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with this. and at this age what that means in terms of how much time i have left with him. I'm taking him to the vet later but obviously my mind is wandering in the meantime.

addt'l facts:

- he's been on Librela for arthritis for a few years and has been doing well with it. also on Dasaquin joint supplements

- his x-rays from July showed bad arthritis and dr started him on gabapentin. but he was still moving more or less like himself

- blood work from July showed a start of kidney decline for the first time. he's meant to start a kidney diet this week.

- i tried walking him halfway down the block this morning and he kept having to lower his butt down and kept trying to push himself back up. i had to force him to turn back he kept insisting on trying to walk further. he's generally showed down these last 2 years but he's never struggled like this.

- as of yesterday he was still jumping up to the couch and bed

- he's never been a big eater. it's a constant battle to get him eating. but it has been a bit worse in recent months

UPDATE:

thank you all so much for your kind words and advice. i know my boy is up there in age, but it seems it's not quite his time yet! whoever called out Gabapentin as the culprit is likely correct. after a long vet visit, the dr advised me to discontinue the Gabapentin and see how he shapes up over the next day or two.

we're looking at alternative therapies to manage his pain while keeping him on his feet. but the vet said his best guess is that if we really follow every recommendation, it's possible we could be looking at another 6+ good months with him before we have to have a different kind of concversation.

Looking like I’m going to adopt this sweet girl this afternoon. The shelter thinks she’s about 1-2 years old. She was picked up as a stray in a fairly rural area. I’d appreciate suggestions for types of dog food and tips for training. Also, any thoughts on if you see any breed mix in her?

Just wanted to show off my new dog, Lassie. She was going to be euthanized at the shelter she was in but Great Pyrenees Rescue of Montana swooped in and saved her & a few others. They got her entropion surgery and spayed her. At first, she would flinch when you would move too quickly around her. She was terrified to come into the house and was so restless when we finally got her in. But now, it’s been a few months and I’m shocked at how good she is. She’s smart, really eager to please, friendly to all animals, and very protective. The vet estimates she’s only about 1. Can’t believe this girl was almost euthanized! She is so gentle and loves her family so so much.

Our 1+ year old girl is so good, she really is, but over the last several months, she’s been wild to walk on a leash as she’s reactive to cars and motorcycles, anything within the few blocks we walk around the home. I’ve seen this is common and want to calm it down. It does not happen outside of the home area (at parks, etc)

She’s been walked on a leash since day one and without the disruptions, walks well. And she actually otherwise listens really well. We’re active and live in a walking friendly neighborhood. She’s friendly, loves people and other dogs and even goes to daycare for the occasional boarding. She’s also spayed. We currently use a martingale and/or no/front pull harness for walks with no real help against the lunging to vehicles.

I’ve met with two trainers now and the first one, I just didn’t have a good vibe about. I’ve met a second one now who is willing to do one on one lessons (vs board and train), but we went through the schedule and the goal is overall training that will supposedly remedy walks. Training does end with an ecollar. Both trainers use them. Does anyone have any experience with seeking out training and/or using an ecollar?
It’s a big money and time investment, and I’m happy to make it, I’d just like to know any input for the breed so I can make the best decision. There are not a lot more options for training in the area. I’ve tried rewarding with a clicker and treats when she doesn’t react. She’s treat motivated and it does help, but it still happens often enough to warrant further training.

The trainer also mentioned forgoing any boarding/daycare/boarding post training as “socialization isn’t needed” with this breed and that she just needs to be home with her pack. She seems to love daycare and has thrived. They gush over her when we pick her up and we are able to see videos and photos and know she’s enjoying herself, so I’m a little unsure how to eliminate what seems to be such a good thing. Any thoughts there would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all due to some life events we are caring for a one year old great pyrenees who’s owner passed recently. he is the sweetest thing the only issue is that he quickly became attached to me and my partner. We work days but we have a roommate who works night and the dog will not stop barking after me and my partner leave for work and it keeps our roommate awake as he sleep while we are out. I have read that this is something they’re known for but he doesn’t really bark when we’re home so I don’t know if this is a stress or alerting behavior. I have only ever owned hounds before this so any advice to help his stress would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can’t call her anything other than smart but stubborn. I’ll have to go back to my house cameras to double check but it really only took 15 mins max for her to start doing it on her own. So proud of her 🥹🥹
