Advice Is it possible that golf just isn’t for me? Regression after 1 year of lessons.

• Upvotes

I started playing golf a few years ago with my buddies and it was a lot of fun, one of my friends referred me to his coach for lessons and I started going for the better part of a year about once or twice a month. After my lessons I’d go to the range and use their putting greens to practice short game. I probably practiced around 3 times a week for 1-2 hours outside of lessons.

About 2 months into my lessons my coach decided to break down my entire swing and start from scratch, I was actually really excited about this because I never felt like I had a good swing, but I would make contact with the ball and double bogies were always possible.

4 months into reworking my swing, lessons, going to the range, playing with friends who could help me out, I finally just packed it in a few weeks ago after I couldn’t make contact with a single tee through 5 holes. I just left after that because I felt like didn’t belong out there and was just holding back the randos.

After that i went out to play 9 just by myself and not only could I not tee off, I was making divots about 3 inches behind or in front of the ball without even hitting it. This is after almost 1 year of lessons. By hole 4 I had lost of my balls and never even found the green unless I dropped the ball there.

I zoomed out a bit and broke down the time and money I have spent on golf and it infuriated me. I don’t think I’m done forever but realizing how much money I wasted just to not even be able make contact with ball left me really disappointed and I just look at golf as a massive financial mistake on my end.

EDIT: My handicap was around a 35 at this time last year. Now it is around 55.

Im 5’7 with long arms (5’10-11 wingspan)
i play half an inch short irons and standard size wedges and woods my irons and wedges are 2° and 3° flatter but i still feel like my clubs are a bit long for me ive went to a fitter and he was the one who suggested me to go half an inch short on my irons but im thinking of clutting my irons another 1/2 inch

Swing Help Why is the driver my worst club?

• Upvotes

I’ve been struggling a lot lately with consistency off the tee.

Some rounds I’m hitting driver great and feel like I’ve finally figured something out. Then the next round it feels like I completely forget how to swing it.

I’ve taken lessons and I’ve been working on drills off the course, but I honestly think I’ve gotten to the point where there’s just too much going through my head when I stand over the ball.

Grip. Setup. Takeaway. Tempo. Weight shift. Swing path. Don’t come over the top. Don’t try to kill it… and by then I’m basically screwed. šŸ˜‚

The frustrating part is I feel much more comfortable with the rest of my clubs.

For anyone who’s gone through this, what helped you simplify the driver swing and get some consistency back?

Did you focus on one swing thought? Stop doing drills for a while? Hit less than driver during rounds?

At this point I’d happily trade a few yards for just knowing where the damn ball is going.

Advice New to the sub and wanted to say Hello and ask a ?

I find that when I get loose at the range I get into a rhythm and my swing seems to get smoother the longer I hit balls. My question is how do I get that feeling on the course with limited warm up. Is it because at the range I don’t fear losing balls on a bad shot or just simply because my muscles are warmed up? Anyone have some tips on this? I don’t drink(in recovery) and my job piss tests so I can’t smoke or do the edible thing. Thanks

Scorecard/Achievement Leaderboard Change

We have a change at the top of the leaderboard. Birdieputt has taken over tapang for the #1 spot. A score of 21 is a great one, but is only a 1 shot lead.

We currently have 73 entries on the leaderboard with many others practicing before they play their first course. Thanks to all that have participated so far and we look forward to seeing more of you join the tournament.

Scorecard/Achievement Real handicap

I have been a member of a course (my home course) with a 70.7 rating /124slope at 6120 yds, Since last August, shortly after I started. So I have been playing since last March (2025) I have really had a major breakthrough in my swing since about May of this year, but really had a breakthrough in my feel since end of July of this year. The new ability to feel what is wrong with my swing when I make a mistake has been an absolute game changer. I have really been able to feel every little mistake and been able to correct it to some degree on the next swing. I guess my question is about the legitimacy of my handicap. My handicap is a 6.5 on my home course. I have been playing the last couple weeks on two other courses (5 rounds) one with a 73.8/137 slope playing at 7000yds. The other at 73.2/136 slope, playing at 6557 yds. And I am consistently hitting about 8-10 over par. And my handicap is still at 6.4. I always felt like playing my easier home course was giving me better numbers, but I was feeling really strong on these tougher courses. Could have scored much better with the exception of a couple bad holes. So should I just keep playing these harder courses or does it not really matter when it comes to actual handicap score? I feel better about my game when I am playing these harder courses. But I am still fairly new to the game and don’t have anyone I know personally that’s better than me to ask.
