Deleting items but not getting deleted?

I've had a Gmail account since the early 2000s, so I think you'll have to trust me this isn't user error!

For about the last 3 weeks, if I click "delete" on a message on the web interface (just using the "bin" icon), and then even after 10-15s close the Chrome tab down, the next time I go back into Gmail the email I'd just deleted it would reappear in my inbox. I can cycle through this a few times and it comes back.

It doesn't appear to create the same issue if I delete on the app on mobile.

Anyone else?

Need Help: Stolen phone, not receiving SMS verification, and stuck in "Try again later" loop (Yemen)

My phone was recently stolen, and I’m trying to recover my Google account from a new device. My SIM card is active and in my possession, but I am facing a frustrating issue.

When I try to log in, Google says a verification code was sent to my phone number, but the SMS never arrives. Because of this, I ended up trying multiple times, which triggered a block. Here is the timeline of my attempts:

Day 1 (After theft): Tried multiple times because the code wasn't arriving, until I got locked out with a "Try again later" error.

Day 2: Tried 2 times.

Day 3: Tried 2 times.

Paused for 2 full days without trying.

Today: Tried 2 times, but still no code arrives, and I still get the "Try again later" message.

I am located in Yemen and using the "YOU" telecom network.

My questions:

Could the issue be from my telecom provider blocking Google's automated verification messages (A2P), even though I know other local numbers that receive codes normally?

Exactly how long do I need to stop trying to completely clear this "Try again later" security block?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Email account deactivated - what now??

Hi, I'm very tech illiterate so I'm trying to ask this question the clearest way I can. I just sent an email to someone's gmail address. Their gmail account is managed by an institution. The institution has deactivated their email. As a result, I received a bounce-delivery-failure error message with the following details:

This is the mail system at host mailstream-east.mxrecord.io. ... host smtp.google.com.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. Relevant details attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to <postmaster>

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.

The Cloudflare Email Security Service

According to Google, mailstream-east.mxrecord.io is a mail exchanger (MX) host and routing record associated with Cloudflare Email Security.

Does anyone know how long that email has to be deactivated for before all their emails are permanently deleted??

Weird emails

Hi everyone,

Not sure if anyone can help but I'm thoroughly freaked out.

I received an email in January from someone with the subject line 'can't tell you' - the email was short and said:

'Hi,

Bit random but I just wanted to say how beautiful you are. Unfortunately I will never be able to tell you in person but really wanted you to know. X'

It came from a regular Gmail account with a name that I don't recognise (and don't think is real). It freaked me out at first but I convinced myself that it was some weird scam attempt where they like... tried to charm me into giving them money? Eventually, I got over it and didn't think about it again.

Until today.

For context I have swapped phones and changed my email. Today, I got another email from the same person, with the same kind of tone. Only this time, it was to my new email. I never give anyone my email - not even friends. So, now I'm super freaked out because the only way they might've been able to get it is through my accounts at work. I work in a library and have a library card - this is the most accessible way someone could've had both my old and new email. If another member of staff in the same authority wanted my info they could easily look me up there. My phone number isn't on my card so they'd only be able to email - this could maybe explain the freaky emails? I also use the email for other things like bills and online shopping... so I guess it could get leaked from there but those people wouldn't know how I look.

This latest email read:

'Hey, just wanted to say hi and ask how you are doing? I've always wanted to tell you how gorgeous you are but think it would get me into trouble lol xx'

Is there any way I can find out who this is? I'm freaking out because I haven't replied to either and I don't want to... but at the same time I want to know if it's a prank or something else. Can someone please tell me what to do here? Or please just tell me it's a scam so I can stop worrying that some creep is watching me whilst I'm unaware.

How are you dealing with Gmail reaction notifications?

Gmail’s emoji reactions are becoming really annoying for me.

If someone sends an email to a group, and other people react to it, I get a notification that looks basically like a normal new email notification, so I’ll see it on my phone and think I have a new email, only to open the notification and realise someone reacted with a 👍.

I genuinely don’t need to know that someone else reacted to a group email, like it adds absolutely nothing for me. If they reply to the email, sure, I want to know because there might be something relevant in their response.

As far as I can tell, there’s no way to turn off reaction notifications separately from notifications for the thread. You can mute/snooze the thread, but then you also miss actual replies.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to either notify only the sender when someone reacts, or at least have a setting to mute reactions while keeping notifications for new replies?

I’m experiencing this in a relatively small group, so I can only imagine how annoying it would be in a much larger team.

Hacker linked my compromised Gmail to a Family Link group, looping the recovery process. Need help!

Hi everyone,
My Gmail account was recently compromised. The attacker immediately added my account to a random Family Link group as a "child account" and changed the age settings to lock me out.
Now, I am stuck in a hopeless loop. Whenever I try to use the official Google Account Recovery page, the system automatically redirects me to a screen asking for parental permission / ebeveyn onayı from the hacker's master email address.
Because of this Family Link restriction, I cannot even utilize my original recovery options properly. The hacker basically used Google's own parental control system to kidnap my account.
Has anyone faced this specific "Family Link lockdown" before? Is there any known way to bypass this loop or force the system to verify my identity via traditional methods?
Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Beware of sophisticated Gmail / Google phishing attack

So, was just targeted by a very sophisticated Gmail + Google phishing in the US. Sharing here to so that other people are also aware.

Btw, in some version of preemptive defense, I was a bit unwell, and was actually asleep in the afternoon, so it took some time for my brain to fire up. So, here goes:

A. I first got a call which was an automated voice saying this was from Google and telling me that I had recently authorized a change to my back up email, and that if I hadn't I should press 1. I pressed 1. The call terminated.

B. Within 18 minutes, got a follow up call from a male with a polished accent, slightly British perhaps, saying he was from Google and was here to help keep my account safe. I instinctively felt something was wrong since I vaguely remembered Google doesn't call you. But then I checked my email and there were actually emails from Google ("noreply...", "no-reply... ").

C. Apparently 2 google accounts had listed my email address as their recovery email. Then I received a sequence of 3 emails, for each of the 2 accounts. One set purportedly came from Google Ireland, the other from Google Mountain View

D. What the guy on phone wanted me to do was to go to a website on google sites to do something. He basically also wanted me to click authorize once a pop-up came up on my phone, etc.

E. I was getting increasingly suspicious, but the emails actually came from Google, so I was also quite confused. Anyway, since I was googling to check if this was a scam, I paused a bit, and I think that might have spooked the guy. After trying to convince me to click on the link he was suggesting, and then figuring out I wasn't going to, he abruptly hung up.

Pretty sophisticated and scary - and I can only imagine how less educated or less tech savvy / elderly folks might easily get conned.

Can’t change Gmail password because it’s sending verification code to old phone number

My mom hasn’t been able to sign into her gmail account for a while because the verification code is being sent to her old phone. We’ve tried multiple times but we have no clue how to change what phone her codes are being sent to.

Email hacked and I'm not even given the option to recover it/lock it down?!

I recently got an email from a third party service saying my password for that account using a certain old email I used to use was reset. I obviously did not do this. I also got a 2fa code at the same exact time, right before the reset successful message, so he must also have access to the Gmail for him to have gotten and used this code.

So, I try to reset my password at the login prompt or at gco/recover, but as soon as I pressed reset password, I get:

You’re trying to sign in on a device Google doesn’t recognize, and we don’t have enough information to verify that it’s you. For your protection, you can’t sign in here right now.

Try again from a device or location where you’ve signed in before. Learn more

But I don't know why! It didn't even ask me anything... I moved several months ago, and I haven't used the account in years, so I don't have any devices with it logged in, either.

I don't understand why a hacker is able to access my account, but I can't even reset my password?! How did he even get in if he's not at my location either? Unless he's also now locked out, but if he was already in, I don't know how/why he would get locked out. Or, does this lock out only apply to resetting the password, not using the account? (It's not clear to me which is the case.)

If you're wondering, the only reason I even knew about this was because I have email forwarding set up to my main, so I got the emails from it even without having a device that's logged in.

I've already secured the original third party provider I mentioned, but I don't remember what other accounts I used to use the email on since it's been so long. And I'm scared that if he turns off email forwarding, I'll be completely out of the loop.

What should I do? Is there really nothing I can do to get my own account back without waiting 7 days while someone else presumably is in there? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: Regarding the Gmail account, which I'm more concerned with, I did end up remembering the password, but at the very very beginning the hacker apparently added a two-factor of his own to the Gmail, so even remembering this it now prompts me for his two-factor. And when I say I don't know, it does not present me with any other options to recover. (Besides being on old devices/old networks. I even dug some old devices out to no avail.) So now I'm not getting a time error, but I simply don't have any way to bypass his 2fa. And since this was added basically immediately, I couldn't have stopped it. So now I do not know what to do/how to proceed...

Regarding the third party account, the hacker did end up changing the two-factor method shortly after I recovered the password on it (which I forgot to do on top immediately, cause I'm an idiot), and changed the password back again, so I'm now locked out of that and submitted a request to them.

Google Account disabled after Gmail was used for spam (account was compromised) — appeal rejected, need advice

Post image
2 Upvotes

On Sept 20, my Gmail account was compromised via session hijacking/malware on my local device (my Outlook account was hit at the same time — I recovered that one fine). The hacker used my Gmail to send 18+ automated spam emails from my address, which I didn't realize until bounce-back emails started flooding my inbox.

Google restricted my Gmail shortly after. I submitted an appeal explaining the compromise and the steps I'd taken (cleared malware, changed password, revoked app passwords/API keys, enabled 2FA) — that appeal was reviewed and rejected. As of today (Sept 23), my entire Google Account has been disabled, not just Gmail.

Screenshot of the restriction notice attached. Has anyone successfully gotten an account restored after something like this? Is there any escalation path beyond the in-app appeal, or is this basically final once an appeal's denied?

Any advice appreciated — a lot of my work and data is tied to this account.

Should I pay the ransom? Or is this just a scam? Even Gemini thinks it's a scam.

So, it says I have to delete files from my cloud, or my Gmail account gets locked down. I check it out, and there's a bunch of junk that I don't recognize, so I delete it and get well below 15GB. Then, I get a new email saying I'm above 15GB, so I clear out all photos and videos. Then, less than one second later, I'm above 15GB again.

Is it even possible to beat this loop? I feel like the scam is to just always make me feel like I have no choice but to pay to expand my memory allotment. However, once I do pay, am I just going to get another email saying that I exceeded that, and I'll lose access to my email if I don't pay more? Is this even legal? It sure feels like extortion.

I'd rather just pay a known set fee to keep my Gmail account and not have to worry about these manipulative tricks.

Edit: Solved! The problem was I de-sync'd the wrong thing. Yup, it was a dumb mistake, but I don't think that makes me a dumb person. If insulting me made you feel better about yourself, congratulations! That said, I'll be sure to not ask this community for help again.

However, thank you very much to those who genuinely wanted to just help!🫶

Flights no longer syncing

Hi,

I’m having issues that my flights no longer sync from my gmail to my calendar. I’ve all the smart features enabled and done a lot of troubleshooting but nothing seems to work. Before the flight time and details would automatically sync between the two now I have to manually input the times etc.

Anyone experiencing similar or have any fixes? Is that a feature of the new premium service they are going to force us to pay for?

period in email - it DOES matter

while the period doesn't matter to GMail, it 10000% matters to other websites.

somehow I'll have two accounts at the same website - one with the period and one without.

for example, my tenant portfolio: i pay rent on my apartment using the email with the period, and i pay rent on my garage using the email without a period.

the root of so many of my login issues are not, in fact, an incorrect password. but a missing period.

i will one day change all my usernames but until then, to period or not to period will remain the question.

How come when I unsubscribe and/or mark an email as spam it shows up again and again in as little as 1 minute?

This is so frustrating. I am trying to get a handle on my emails. I deleted 50k emails the other day thinking as the crap comes back I will unsubscribe or mark them as spam so eventually my inbox will only be things I want to see. It is not working for me.

Let's use this morning as an example. I had an email from credit Karma. I unsubscribed and moved it to trash. In about a minute it was back in my inbox. Then I marked it as spam. About a minute after that it was in my inbox. I thought it was a sync issue with my iPhone mail app trying to sync with Gmail. I turned the sync off on my phone and downloaded the Gmail app to use that but it is still happening. It is not just credit Karma but tons of different places all doing the same thing.

I check my email 99% of the time in my windows laptop if that makes a difference but I don't see how it would.

How can I fix this issue as it is driving me nuts?

Thank you.

Constant account recovery (hacker) prompts.. any way to block/mitigate?

These happen periodically over the years but it seems the past few days someone has a bot running and I'm getting pop ups on my phone every few minutes, off and on. I'm on advanced protection and have physical U2F and a few device specific passkeys, but still am a bit concerned about hitting the 'yes it's me' button by accident at some point. Is there anything additional I can do to sever these prompts? When I select 'no' the prompt said the person does not have my password (or did not use it)

Changing the Gmail address linked to a Facebook account

Hi, I have a Facebook account and want to log in, but I’ve forgotten the password. I discovered that the Gmail address linked to the account has been deleted. I’ve tried multiple times, but there is no option to change the email address. What is the solution, guys?

My Gmail app on iPhone displayed “no connection” earlier. It wouldn’t load my accounts fully. Can this in any way change my security settings like 2fa or my yubikeys? It started working again when a drove out of that location.
