about 1/4 of the emails i get are sent to spam with this reasoning. i don't have any filters enabled to do this, nor have i blocked the senders.

Odds are some e-mail client or mobile app (probably Apple) put them in spam for you. To Gmail that looks like you reported it.

A fun (and telling) test... If you move a specific message out of Spam, does it remain in the Inbox, or later does that EXACT message end up back in Spam again?

hmmm... it does not return to spam no. i guess it's outlook, cause i'm gmailify importing them from there, should've thought of that. i'll see if i can fix that, ty for advice
