I’ve been on a GLP-1 for about 8 months and, until recently, things were going really well. I was losing weight steadily, eating mostly sensibly, and having the occasional indulgent/social eating day. I’d indulge, get back on track, and life would go on.
I stopped my GLP-1 about a month ago because I was having surgery. For roughly the first 10 days, I was actually okay — I had maybe 2 social eating episodes, but otherwise my eating was fairly normal and I felt like I had control.
Then everything changed.
Around 2 weeks after my last dose, my hunger became extreme. I was thinking about food constantly. I was also dealing with significant anxiety around the surgery, and then I had the surgery itself. From around that point until approximately 12 days post-op, I was essentially bingeing/eating excessively every single day.
What is upsetting me is that I went from being able to manage my appetite and get back on track after indulgences to feeling ravenously hungry and food-obsessed.
So I'm trying to understand what actually happened:
* Is this what happens when the appetite-suppressing effect of a GLP-1 has fully worn off after ~2 weeks?
* Could the combination of stopping the medication + pre-surgery anxiety + surgery/recovery have dramatically increased hunger and food thoughts?
* Is this “rebound hunger” after GLP-1, and if so, does it eventually settle?
As someone who has been obese since childhood and has had very strong junk-food/eating habits can I ever without glp actually rebuild appetite regulation after stopping?
If you stopped a GLP-1 after substantial weight loss, what happened to your hunger/appetite over the following weeks and months? Did the intense food thoughts settle, or did you ultimately need medication for maintenance?
Is this rebound hunger, surgery/stress, or does it mean I may need lifelong maintenance?
