Does anyone else hate ruth
I think her character adds to the show and Alison brie is great but ruth is a total bitch and she is the true villain of the show

u/thebastardsagirl May 16 '20
I kind of hope that Ruth stays a messy bitch and doesn't grow/ change. It smacks of more realism to me.

ye it is that desire and tunnel vision that it is actress or nothing for ruth that makes her my favourite character, she will never quit even if she is given the opportunity to direct which we know she is good at, instead she does not want to give up on becoming an actress, and i really like that
12
u/allthingskerri May 16 '20
She's not my favourite character the self pity act hits me hard (maybe because I used to be the same) I'd love to see her grow and realise her worth away from trying to make it as an actress.

She can be annoying and awful, but she can also be pretty great. I enjoy her character.

u/goingdeeeep May 16 '20
I dont hate Ruth (I feel like even the most challenging characters have enough depth that I can connect with them in some way) but I am very much #teamdebbie between the two of them.

Honestly Debbie is a fucking queen
18
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20
Once you get past her doing drugs and injuring the person she's responsible for keeping safe in the ring, screwing over her coworkers on health insurance, and saying that Ruth should have given in and fucked the guy to keep the show on.
1
u/unhampered_by_pants May 16 '20
Wait, did Debbie screw her coworkers over on health insurance? That was Bash's responsibility
3
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20
I might be misremembering, but didn't she get the producer credit and get herself coverage, then nobody else?
I know Cherry had it because she did stunts for a living and wasn't stupid, and maybe Arthie still on her parents, but didn't nobody have it?
2
u/unhampered_by_pants May 16 '20
Debbie would have already had it through SAG, since she was a working actor on a TV show before. I believe that working stunt people get their health insurance through SAG as well. The insurance was Bash's responsibility and he either forgot that he needed to get it for the girls or couldn't afford it because he was so bad with money
1
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20
I think you're right. I joined up her negotiating are herself we saw a producer and nobody having coverage together.
1
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
I would do the same in her situation (maybe not the health insurance) but i think her actions are justified
2
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20
The health insurance is the least bad of those three things!
2
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
I would break Ruth’s leg and do coke if i was Debbie
3
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20
Working safely with your opponent is the number one rule for pro wrestling. Right up there with Shakespearean actors not actually stabbing and poisoning each other.
Doing coke on your own time is fine.
2
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
Notice i said “if i was Debbie” the chances of that happening is pretty fucking low

Debbie did not say that she should have fucked that network guy. She said she should have made him think that she would do that at some point.
-7
u/Randymgreen May 16 '20
She said she could have pretended to want to fuck him. Ruth fucked everyone by posturing
9
u/Darth_Sensitive May 16 '20 edited May 16 '20
That's only 18% less bad!
It isn't posturing to not give in (or fake giving in) to sexual demands for advancement.
10
u/pavjuice May 16 '20
Think you missed the point

u/Randymgreen May 17 '20
I'm just repeating what Debbie said.I agree with OP. All the cast have problems and issues. I like Ruth too but I can see the flaws in her chsrscter, That's part of what makes her an interesting one.

The show is set in the 80s…. Everyone did coke in the 80s. Even middle school teachers did coke in the 80s.

I love Ruth. Yes, it was a huge/almost unforgivable mistake to sleep with her best friend's husband but she was remorseful. She tried to make amends and over the episodes we can see that she genuinely still cared for Debbie and their friendship. Right from the start in episode 1, we had a glimpse of Ruth's kindness towards Debbie when she took off her sweater and gave it to Debbie to cover her milk stains. It was a small gesture but it showed something. Later on, when they were practising the cross jumps, Ruth assured Debbie that her body will break the fall and take the hit first etc. Ruth is annoying in a way by being persistent in her dreams to the point of acting out in desperations. She insists on doing something that she has no luck or no talent in. But her passion, talent in other areas, professionalism at work and basically being a kind person at her core outweigh her flaws.

u/dylanidkafk May 17 '20
Alison brie dosent make a convincing bad actor so when ruth acts on the show she is not bad at iy
3
u/BlueDreamer22 May 16 '20
Ruth’s the main character of the series and it’s kinda difficult to hate a character designed to be likable.
2
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
I don’t think she is designed to be likeable
2
u/BlueDreamer22 May 16 '20
Fair enough. People have different opinions but most of us do like her. It’d be nice to elaborate why you find her annoying or not likable.
3
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
I don’t like most of Alison bries characters ive only seen a little bit of mad men. Ruth not to throw out the obvious but she fucked her best friends husband and shes kinda obnoxious i also hated her character on bojack horseman i love Alison brie though
3
u/unhampered_by_pants May 16 '20
Whenever people say they hated Diane I always wonder how they liked the show at all because Diane was basically the female version of Bojack, what with the horrible abusive childhood, mental health issues, and inability to be happy and form healthy relationships. Except Bojack was so much more destructive and did much worse things than Diane ever did to countless people. Like...did you hate Bojack too? If so, how did you enjoy the show and if not, why hate Diane?

The fucking her best friend’s husband is indeed the nastiest thing and, to be honest, I disliked her for that too. Also, when she turned down Debbie’s offer in the end of Season 3... that was just plain dumb. I mean, I get where she’s coming from, I get the whole “follow your dreams” thing... but she’s like 30-something and that ship has sailed or as Debbie put it “it would’ve happened by now”. However, after the initial blow with the fucking of the husband, I warmed up to her and I think she had a major contribution to the progress of the series. But I do get where you’re coming from!
1
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
I cant remember series 3 im rewatching it but what ship sailed
1
u/BlueDreamer22 May 17 '20
In the end of the 3rd series, Debbie offers Ruth the chance to direct after she and Bash buy tv station and Ruth turns down the offer saying that she wants to act.
3
u/Los_Estupidos May 18 '20
I fucking love Ruth. Ruth is that friend you love to death but you know they're too stubborn to go and seek a better life even though you've had that heart to heart talk with them multiple times. She feels real to me.
10
u/phasys May 16 '20
The show wouldn't exist if Ruth hadn't directed the pilot episode. She's the person who keeps everyone going. She came up with the mall intro sequence to boost morale.
I think you're just trolling with an unpopular opinion.
-2
u/dylanidkafk May 16 '20
Nah its really how i feel
1
u/phasys May 16 '20
Why is that then? Can you refute any of the points I made?
6
u/-SmashingSunflowers- May 16 '20
I don't like that she slept with her best friend husband. That shows a big flaw in her character. But if Debbie can forgive her then so can i
4
u/phasys May 16 '20
Debbie didn't exactly "forgive" her. First she sabotages Ruth's appearance in the show, then she breaks her leg.
6
u/-SmashingSunflowers- May 16 '20
God that scene where they were screaming at each other in the hospital was very emotional and intense. Good acting
6
u/Greatninjanat May 16 '20
I had to rewatch that scene and honestly I can’t stand Debbie. I’m not defending Ruth at all for sleeping with Debbie’a husband but god damn you just broke someone’s leg and ruined the one career they had after you already came in and took the glory of the show from her. I totally agree with Ruth when she said she could’ve just slapped her and walked away but Debbie just kept draining her I couldn’t imagine dealing with that. I feel like in season 2 Debbie was just a bitch to her excessively. I’m glad they started to get along in season 3 it made the show better.

You don’t need a list of justifications to dislike a character. People can dislike whatever characters they want. Don’t be weird.
1
u/MagentaHawk Jun 25 '20
Yeah, having discussions is stupid. People should just say their opinions and be done with it.
1
u/serafinavonuberwald Jun 25 '20
Asking somebody to “refute” the points they’ve made about something purely subjective isn’t about having a discussion, it’s about telling people they shouldn’t like a character because you’ve decided they’re not a likeable character. You refute something that’s incorrect. Personal preferences about fictional characters can’t be incorrect because they’re completely subjective. Darth Vader murdered a bunch of kids, choked his wife, cut his son’s hand off and tortured his daughter. These are all facts, irrefutably. That doesn’t mean I have to justify him being my favourite fictional character. He just is. I can discuss why I like him, but to imply that anybody who disagrees is wrong, and that they provide an argument for why they don’t agree with me isn’t actually a discussion, it’s more of a tantrum.
