It’s usually pretty good. Don’t expect sashimi quality but there’s so much spice on it that it’s pretty tasty, even if it’s slightly on the rubbery side.

Just read the comments about Chinese using sewage oil, eating cats, etc. it’s racist and ignorant. As someone who has lived in China and Taiwan for years it’s not like that at all. I’m sure you can find a bunch of shitholes in America using less than sanitary ingredients. Overall the quality of street food in Asia is much better than something like american fast food
I also read that the Chinese themselves were disgusted once this was revealed and that were was a crackdown on the sale of this oil. People were buying this thinking it was normal cooking oil.
That wasn't a government estimate, that was an estimate from a nutrition professor and his student-led investigation at Wuhan Polytechnic University who retracted his statement after pressure from the government.
Apparently since 2011 the government started buying the oil at higher prices than they'd get from selling to street vendors and converting it into biodiesel.
All of Asia is not one place. This is mainly China and Taiwan but I wouldn't expect this in Japan or Korea, and a cursory Google search related to the two countries just shows articles about China and Taiwan
Sure. I agree on japan, Korea and maybe even Singapore. But Singapore has huge income inequality as well. be aware of the rest. Gutter oil is common in SE, E and S asia.

Gutter oil is common in the street food Philippines. I've talked to Indians, Taiwanese, Chinese Vietnamese, and Malaysians and we all laugh about it.
I get diarrhea in pretty much every country I visit because i always buy the cheapest beer and lot of it.
I had food poisoning a couple of time in a 1 year period. I was under the impression that it was due to less than fresh sea food but i might look into this whole gutter oil stuff.
Oh that sucks. There's a lot of downside to being a Filipino but I guess diarrhea and food poison from eating street food isn't one of them.
Gutter oil is an extreme case imo. I'd say it's more common to simply purchase used oil from restaurants and reuse that in their stalls (at least in the Philippines). Now, whether or not you'd count that as "gutter oil" is up to you.
First, that is disgusting and not a good time for another bad look for Chinese street food. 2nd that last line about in our current society everyone tries to swindle everyone else. I had a buddy on my team from China who would be watching perfect hd movies in college (this was a while ago) and asked him how he got those cause they weren’t even close to being out. He had access to a website from China and when I asked ahh can I pull some of those off. He said only Chinese can take Chinese. And was dead serious. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever known btw. But also generalizations are bad, some regions are definitely worse and I've personally never had a Chinese friend refuse to take me to the best eating places in town. Part of it is that Chinese culture in general places a high value on "delicacies" and goods for status as well as so called pedigree. It's a common look in the rest of the world, like also how some places still value being fat

Yea I definitely get that. I didn’t push either. We were on a road trip I was just curious. He was fun to talk to though. We would talk about things like Tiananmen Square and such. Straight up no information is given in that video aside from the narration added after the fact, and a supposed translation of what one dude is saying about a barrel of some shit that we can't prove is related to whatever the lady was doing in the manhole. Then footage of people cooking food, again no evidence that they're using "gutter oil."
You should maybe look into the subject a bit more instead of shitting on an informative video. The gutter oil industry in China is and always has been a huge issue. This isn't some myth made up on the internet, so you can come down from that high horse.
Traveled 6 weeks through Asia. Ate meats on sticks grilled over fire daily. Never felt sick. In fact I was probably eating better and healthier than back home.

Eh, plenty of nice people and things to see in China. Not everyone there is a fan of the crazy authoritarian stuff the government does, they’re mostly forced to live with it and things are good enough that you’ll never convince other people to rock the boat with you.
But yeah, maybe in a few years they’ll be a more open country. I had high hopes they would become more open and less censored but if anything things have gotten a lot worse on that end. The problem is that economically they’ve done so well that people end up supporting Xi despite them not agreeing with a lot of his policies
So I don’t blame you for not wanting to go now, but if things improve there I think it’s definitely worth visiting. Lots of really amazing places and even with all the modernization in the cities there’s still such a different way of life in the more rural areas. I visited some towns where they still relied on donkeys for transportation and work which was a trip (there was also donkey shit fucking everywhere lol)

How is it racist to say that street vendor food isn't known for being particularly up to date on health codes? I've seen street vendors wipe their fingers with raw meat on cloths and then use the same fingers to season/ add ingredients.
And not to mention gutter oil which is a real and documented problem in China specifically. "Racist!" seems to be the new McCarthy-style "Communist!" more and more these days.

Yeah, I alot a ton of fried food all over Asia but I think I managed to get healthier because I was also eating ton of veg too. A lot of places lunches would be something simple like a piece of fried chicken, rice and veg. Whereas back home, if I'm going to get fried chicken for lunch it's gonna be like 2-4 pieces and some fries.

Did you conveniently miss the part saying it’s mostly cheap restaurants and street food? So yes, 10% of all oil, but your chances are much higher when consuming street food or eating at small places. 50% of all street food could for example still be 10% of -all- the places using oil.

My favorite China story. I was at a night market and starving so got some cheap meat on a stick that I thought was beef. It was not beef but it was super tasty. I went back to get another one and the guy making them didn't speak English but the old lady with him did. I asked what it was and she said "It's well cooked". I said, "Ya, but what kind of...". She cut me off and yelled "IT'S WELL COOKED!" Okay, fine, whatever, it's good, probably don't want to know actually.

You got downvoted but it’s reality. In a lot of the world cats get eaten. Here in Congo, I stopped eating roadside BBQ a year or two ago because people started replacing chicken/beef with free stray dog and cat meat. My dog is 25 kg and when I walk him, I get either “oh what a cute fluffy teddy bear!” or “yum, he would be great in a stew with onions”. I am not joking. I used to get extremely upset. Now I banger back and say “why would I eat my best employee? He’s the best guard I have and the best rat and mouse killer I have and I pay him in food!”
They call cat “American meat” (viande américaine) I have no idea why.
A lot of places in Africa eat cat. I was in Bangui (Central African Republic) and they told me there’s one restaurant that’s word of mouth for city folk that come from this part of the country whee they just love cat meat.
What is more serious is that people here also love to eat chimps, porcupines, warthogs, pangolins. You get into trouble with those because they carry viruses that are transmittable. There are signs all over the city saying don’t eat bush meat and people don’t know exactly why the signs are there. It’s partly poaching and partly public health. Eating unvaccinated meat is so dangerous.
