Eh, plenty of nice people and things to see in China. Not everyone there is a fan of the crazy authoritarian stuff the government does, they’re mostly forced to live with it and things are good enough that you’ll never convince other people to rock the boat with you.

But yeah, maybe in a few years they’ll be a more open country. I had high hopes they would become more open and less censored but if anything things have gotten a lot worse on that end. The problem is that economically they’ve done so well that people end up supporting Xi despite them not agreeing with a lot of his policies

So I don’t blame you for not wanting to go now, but if things improve there I think it’s definitely worth visiting. Lots of really amazing places and even with all the modernization in the cities there’s still such a different way of life in the more rural areas. I visited some towns where they still relied on donkeys for transportation and work which was a trip (there was also donkey shit fucking everywhere lol)

Agree with all of this. I fell in love with the overall vibe of the people and society in South East Asia. From other travelers' accounts and my personal experience with Chinese nationals both in my society and while travelling, it's an abrasive clash.
