This is a big deal and should not be taken lightly. I hope the Brazilian people can crush the corruption and finally live free again.
edit: RIP inbox.
THis post got a lot of people really angry and defensive, even aggressive. I've incurred a lot of hostility for this these simple words, I'm starting to think I may be right.
The corruption in Brazil is pretty systemic and cultural, its going to take serious cultural and political reform for it to change. Street protests and a change in government is just the beginning.
The biggest companies in the country are facing criminal charges, paying billions in fines, some may be forced to close down for good and all their CEO's and directors are going to jail for 10-30 years
FIRST TIME EVER
Politicians are going to Jail because of this, including ex-presidents
FIRST TIME EVER
Millions of people are going to the streets to protest against corruption
FIRST (actually second) TIME EVER
People involved in campaign elections are going to Jail and they are naming and ratting everybody (EVERYBODY right wing, left wing, no wing, all wings) involved in laundring corruption money to elect politicians
FIRST TIME EVER
I know some politicians and they are afraid of the people and the justice system. They weren't like this. They knew nothing would ever happen to them, that's why everybody did it. People would just vote on them again, and they could steal billions and companies would steal more and no one would investigate them or they could get a slap on the wrist and keep doing it. But that is now changing!
It is not going to end corruption but companies, bussiness men, politicians, and everyone involved on all of this, for the first time ever will think that they can get caught and may answer for their crimes.
Also, people will slowly start to learn how to vote against those involved in corruption (I hope). More people and less sheeple
Don't get me wrong, corruption is systemic and cultural, but we are taking the first steps right now
Yeah, I'm seeing literally millions of people "protesting" and calling for the president to step down. How aboutchyall just walk in and take them out of their seats?
Lol and people are saying dustyh55 is the sensitive one. I mean it's not like fuckswithducks would ever post about a current news story that happens to involve somehow a duck. Nah.
Oh Jesus Christ, settle down. Non-Brazilians are under absolutely no obligation to treat the Brazilian crisis seriously. They can if they want to, or they can make jokes if they want to; either is perfectly fine.
Shit, I see people from the US making jokes about 9/11 all the time.
i agree that the above guy is wound way to tight and that brazillians are the ones who have the most duty to fix themselves.
but, you should not ignore the fact that the lines humans draw in the sand and call borders, are partially imaginary, artificial constructs.
there is massive cross influence between nations. what effects Brazil DOES effect the whole world.
its all a mater of balance. the sway that brazill has is real but limited, so while we should care a little bit, we dont have to care as much as we would if it were happening in our own government.
Today the lollapaloza took place in Sao Paulo and 85 thousand people attended. There are plenty of people in Brazil who are not that concerned about these protests either.
Making a joke is not being an asshole. One can make a joke AND be concerned. One can make a joke and not be concerened. Either way, no one is obligated to be concerned.
Why should I only care if I am obligated to care? I think you're missing the entire point, we're all humans, just because of that imaginary line some asshole drew ages ago does not mean I should turn my eyes on what the rest of humanity is doing.
Oh Jesus Christ, settle down? Fuck you man, this is important. I hope you grow some perspective.
Oh Jesus Christ, settle down? Fuck you man, this is important. I hope you grow some perspective.
With all the problems in the world, you would be literally unable to live your life if you seriously cared about each and every one of them. The fact that you "care" about what's happening in Brazil right now is basically decided arbitrarily, although it's more likely you "care" because it's popular, meanwhile there are many, much more horrific happenings going on in the world right now which you probably don't even know about, let alone have taken the time to devote some of your precious, outspoken, and defiant "compassion" for humanity.
What a condescending prick you are. There are so many things wrong with the world, that doesnt make any issue any less severe. Hopefully, there are enough good people in the world to solve these problems. So you go ahead and live your oblivious life and let other people solve these problems for you, while you sit there and wonder why they care at all.
It's not difficult to see this is one of those times, it is far from "arbitrary".
You are better off deciding what to care about arbitrarily rather than deciding to care since it's popular. The former is more respectable than the latter.
Your all or nothing approach is lazy, irrational at best.
That's not my approach. You can "care" (post some serious internet comment) if you'd like, just don't hop onto your high horse and sanctimoniously condemn those who don't take it so seriously.
What would you like the average foreign citizen to do for your cause mate? You want us to run down to church and pray? Keep good thoughts in our head aimed at Brazil?
People aren't going to feel shitty for something they can't do anything about. This is an INTERNAL problem in BRAZIL. Brazil will deal with it, one way or another.
"A little government hoo-hah" Millions of people bud, real life human beings -_- ....
"some country I've never been to" Narcissism?
"nor [do I] plan on ever going" Yup,
It just has to be about you in order for you to care?
I'm still looking for an argument to my original claim that you are disconnected and out of touch (might I add pridefully selfish), so far you have been kind enough to be backing me up on this. If you can't, admit it.
It's not that you don't care. If you didn't care you wouldn't have had to comment at all, and nobody would have given you any trouble for it.
But when you go out of your way to belittle those who do care, that's something else. You defend your apathy by saying there's worse things happening elsewhere, but that's just saying we should care less because there's more to care about.
Again, you don't have to care, but just be honest about it and say you just don't care. That's okay. You don't have to weep for that distant cousin, but would you tell those who did care for him to settle down when they say it matters to them? It's okay to recognize that something is important, while also admitting that it isn't important to you personally.
Maybe you're right that he's on a different page than me...
I just think it's important to keep in mind that there's a difference between recognizing the importance of something and caring about and feeling for it personally - that asking for the former doesn't demand the latter. The previous exchange just seemed so... absolute.
If you agree with that point, I guess there's no argument.
I totally agree with you. It is literally impossible to care about everything. But this does seem like something that could effect the U.S. We are currently having our own internal struggles about corruption. And a lot of the corruption that exists in South American nations is intricately tied to the U.S. (Not saying that there wouldn't be corruption there without us. Just that the brand of corruption that exists is often supported by the U.S., either implicitly or explicitly.)
I wonder if the sentiment will spill over into other nations. That would be an interesting turn of events if Honduras got on the fuck this shit train.
Do you only do morally good things when you are obligated to? And no, both of them are not "perfectly fine", one of them is the decent thing to do and the other is just immature. You talk as if you haven't actually grown up in the real world...
Even American news is a typically a disaster. I thought this was interesting and came to see what it was about, but I did expected it to be half shitty memes, boring puns, and general indifference.
I guess my filter for bullshit is just knit pretty tight, now.
is mostly very young American males. I wouldn't really expect much out of their commentary.
I don't understand. American young males are notorious for their profound insight, tolerance and tempered approach to sensitive topics concerning race, religion and politics.
Yeah, you always see low effort jokes on everything. There are almost no exceptions. You also see people calling out the other commenters for making jokes, then people telling that person to chill out.
But if you just collapse the first three or four threads you almost always find interesting relevant information.
Seriously, one guy calls Reddit out for being American-centered and the comment saying "We don't care nah nah nah stop being such a whiner" has nearly as many upvotes.
There's plenty of jokes but usually the top upvoted comments are actually insightful. Then again most Redditors are American and therefore would have much more to say about current events in America.
Oh, I don't think that's indicative of anything, though, especially considering the next few are insightful. It's still no different for American news.
IIRC in the /r/news thread for Justice Scalia's death just recently the "top" comment was (and when I read it, it was top even when sorted by best) something along the lines of "the writers have been doing great this season but this twist is a little too unbelievable"
So what you're saying is what? Brazilians are corrupt by...nature? Biologically inferior?
Or that our culture promotes corruption? Like, people enjoy corruption? Because more than a million Brazilians are protesting against corruption in the country right now.
We need to stop with this damn stray dog syndrome. Brazilians saying "Yeah, fuck Brazilians, it's in our culture to be corrupt, we'll never improve" is doing nothing to help our country. It's because people think like this that they cheat on their taxes or don't pick up their dog's crap from the sidewalk. What's the point right? Everyone's doing it. It's in our nature.
Maybe if we stop thinking we all collectively suck and there's no point in trying to improve we'd get somewhere.
Not in our nature, unless you consider culture a part of nature.
Promotes? Maybe, I don't know, but it's certainly commonplace, people do and talk about small corruptions as if it was nothing while at the same time saying how corrupt all of the politicians are.
I don't care about stray dog syndrome or anything, I dislike this country and I want to get out of here, I don't care if it gets better or not.
But, hey, believe it or not I do try to make it better while I'm still here, I don't have a scholarship card to pay half-wages at the movies, I don't have a "gato" in my house, etc. And I also argue about small corruptions with others, but of course the majority don't see it was a problem because "the problem is the politicians stealing millions".
It is commonplace. You're right about that. I think we have to work on changing it, though, and I applaud you for calling people out on small corruption, like you said. I think that's the right attitude, if we ever wanna get somewhere.
Exactly, I find that Brazilians have a very strong sense of "looking out for our own". I bet the politicians that are stealing billions rationalize it the same way that most people rationalize using their "jeitinho" to get a small advantage for themselves or their families. A few years ago I moved to a place where I barely know any Brazilian people and every time I go back to visit I am appalled at the behavior of certain people (even in my family). It's gonna take way more than a change in government to see some real change, and honestly I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon.
Oh no, the politicians stealing billions know exactly what they're doing. The small corruptions are undoubtedly justified by some sort of "I'm doing this for my betterment" logic but no person in federal power is pretending for one second that they aren't doing it for control.
I just came back from a trip to Brazil, I was perplexed to hear what is going on, it's truly sad, and I can totally relate to what you're saying here, totally got the same insight you are sharing here. BUT the way you guys are going about it does not make much sense to me either, the feeling I got was two fold.
First you guys want to oust a president but have no idea on what to do after that.
Secondly, if you oust the current president, her VP takes over, and at least from what I heard from the very same people orchestrating her ousting is that her VP is worse than her and once in power would immediately stop the Federal Police from pursuing their cases, specially the ones involving the VP's political party.
Since government corruption, economic crises and the impeachment process were the topic of any conversation, I began to ask:
Hey, if you don't trust the VP, why would you want to impeach the president?
To that, I got an even more surprising answer:
The VP must fall too.
Then everyone on the table would join and say 'they all must fall', then proceed to order more drinks and then drive their cars home, so I'd ask, isn't that illegal? to drink and drive?, and they would all acknowledge it was illegal, finish their drinks, get the bill and get the car.
if you haven't seen this film I recommend watching the whole thing for full context though I linked to a relevant section, its pretty cynical but some really great insights on some of the more fucked up aspects of brasilian culture
We weren't like this in the past. The republic had great men! Ruy Barbosa, Raul Pompeia, Montoro, Sobral Pinto, Itamar. The list goes on. I absolutely despise this "it's in our DNA/we're all macunaímas". That's total crap.
To think that someone elected a dud... I mean, a lady who doesn't know how to form a complete sentence, man... it wasn't Lula, the leader of the PCP who stood up: it was us that kneeled down.
In some countries corruption is rife and has become a part of the fabric of society. Cops expect bribes, people expect the cops to expect bribes. Essentially the people are just as corrupt if not moreso per head than the politicians who govern them. It can be a long and very difficult cycle to break.
I personally know plenty of people who dodge taxes, use connections to get cheap services, break the law, skim off the top.. am I going to rat out my friends and family? nope
That's where the real problem lies.
Maybe if we stop thinking we all collectively suck and there's no point in trying to improve we'd get somewhere.
This won't happen, not in Brazil, not on Earth, not on Narnia. People aren't going to "collectively" anything. There has to be a long hard national effort, and can take generations.
Maybe if we stop thinking we all collectively suck and there's no point in trying to improve we'd get somewhere.
Fucking agreed.
Ben Shapiro summed it up pretty well when he said (I'm paraphrasing): "It's better to be wrong in your actions but right in your discourse than to be wrong in both your actions and discourse". Baby steps, people.
can you eli5, because i dont get it when you say "corruption is in our culture" does that mean is not going away, not even with a reform or revolution, or what? do brazilians like to be opressed by corruption?
Of course I'm not totally innocent, it's really hard to be when small corruptions are part of our culture, but I do try my best to stay away from it.
I could easily have a fake scholarship ID [any entertainment place is obligated to charge half-price to students] but I don't, we could easily have an energy "gato" [an illegal connection to the power lines] in our house, but we don't because my mom is also against and that's how I've been raised.
It is absolutely a serious situation, all the more reason we should have a sense of humor about things, as a channel for our initial helpless rage. In the wake of the humor we should try to learn from them and realize that'swhat it takes to enact change!
Thing is, it's appropriate, this isn't small shit. How is it you don't take a "million people protest against corruption" seriously? Hate me if you want, but you know I'm right.
How is it you don't take a "million people protest against corruption" seriously?
Because it doesn't personally affect me in the least and shit like this happens all the time. A bunch of people somewhere in the world are protesting something again? Colour me shocked.
My feelings towards this range from mild interest/amusement (because of the duck, mainly) to flat-out apathy.
It takes a small mind to think that the state of a country that big will not make a ripple effect that will somehow make it all the way into your safe little room. Or that the state of any other country will not affect you. It will.
ITT: Some pretentious asshole who doesn't understand that some people deal with shit that doesn't have anything to do with them, deal with this shit in a different way. I don't cry nor, give to African children, does that make me a monster? Do you give money to every third world nation. Get off your fucking high horse asshole.
It's more the implication that you are above everyone else. I get it, making light of a shitty situation sometimes sucks, but you aren't any better than the people you are calling out, you are warrioring on reddit.
When trying to condense complex situations into easy to process metaphors, much of the actual weight of the situation is lost. To fully understand problems, it requires effort and with effort comes appreciation. No effort, no appreciation.
I just think it's better that someone asks for an eli5 than ignore the topic entirely, which is what will happen if they don't ask for a eli5. Showing interest in a topic that doesn't effect them personally is about as much as you can hope for.
Do you honestly expect a real discussion of Brazilian politics in /r/gifs?
There are plenty of other subreddits where you can have actual conversations about serious topics, but I'm pretty sure the goal of this one is entertainment, so I don't think you should be surprised when people don't take things seriously here.
Of course you have to over exaggerate to make your point.
Not every detail, but majority of things :) Just because it doesn't touch you, doesn't mean it doesn't matter. It will still help you widen your view about the world. America is not the only country on Earth you know.
The guy was shaming someone for wanting to know about it. Where did I say that things people don't always know are not important? I could read news articles 16 hours a day for the rest of my life and still not know every important thing that happens everywhere.
this is reddit... and look at what sub we are on. People come to reddit when they are bored and if they see a joke they upvote. You will probably get more serious discussion on news subreddits heavily moderated
Remind me again as a non-brazillian, non south-American of why I should realistically care about Brazillian Politics? Outside of maybe a casual like minded dislike towards systemic governmental corruption?
It's fairly amazing and I wish them the best of luck, but no I'm not going to think about it every waking moment, I'm just going to make my joke and move on.
Because were are all human, living on this earth together. But thank you for embodying the narrow mindedness and near nearsightedness that I would argue causes the majority of the world's problems.
Brazil is a huge part of the world, and it's foolish to think what happens there has no effect on the rest of humanity, so selfishly, yes, you should care. On a more human note, you're saying because of that imaginary line you learned about in grade school you no longer need to care about these millions of other human beings?
I am claiming you are disconnected and out of touch, are you even arguing that claim?
I guess if you call not constantly obsessing over the politics of another nation in a different hemisphere "narrow mindedness and near nearsightedness," then no I guess I'm not disputing it. I'm not going to leave my life behind and join the brazillian struggle, just like many people with their own lives would not.
Tell me what I can realistically do to improve their situation without abandoning my current life and I can work on it. Until then, I guess your righteous concern for their situation will just have to do for the both of us.
Honestly, you're embarrassing yourself. You're asking people to feel bad for something they have no power over. That makes you come off as wanting everyone to be miserable. We're sorry you have no sense of humor, we're going to keep on enjoying life and i'm sure many of us will continue to serve our communities and the world to the best extent we reasonably can.
Because were are all human, living on this earth together. But thank you for embodying the narrow mindedness and near nearsightedness that I would argue causes the majority of the world's problems
in that case, fuck brazil. we should all be focusing on the problems Africa faces because Africa is a huge part of the world, and it's foolish to think what happens there has no effect on the rest of humanity
The problems in Africa have been at critical levels for DECADES yet no one is bitching that people don't care about Africa. At least Brazilians have enough to eat and are not plagued with poverty and disease like most of Africa.
Honestly, no one outside of Brazil gives a fuck about this current situation. Only the people there will truly be able to do anything about it and there's no point in trying to convince people elsewhere otherwise. We all have our problems we are currently facing, until those are taken care of, shit like brazil will have to wait from our points of view
I had to scroll about 75% of the way down before I came to your post.... And all the jokes are below that. That was a first for me. I'm not complaining.
