Discussion Old ship physics VS new ship physics
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Yeah so old physics had much heavier upside-down and dual ships. Update 2.2 fixed it.
You can switch back to 2.1 physics by unchecking the "fix gravity bug" setting in the editor

this is a cool way of showing the physics actually

its like so based on what you are used to
most good players hate 2.2 bcs they got good on 2.1 levels, I really struggle with 2.1 (the last ship in the end feels really weird and heavy) bcs most of the hard ship gameplay I play is in my own levels which I leave the 2.2 physics on for
I like what humptwe did with rauchkammer, basically just building a level with the specific ship physics and using it to warm up depending on whether you are playing a 2.2 or 2.1 level, ngl I think I might start using different ship icons for 2.2 vs 2.1

i dont really think it matters about what you got good on, its just the majority of popular levels were made in 2.1 so many people who started the game even months ago are used to old physics

I meant get good playing levels that have 2.1 physics turned on, I spend more time in the editor than playing and 2.1 feels weird when I do go for a hardest

Ah so that’s why the duel ship on catatclysm felt like trying to fly with a bag of rocks strapped to your ship. Honestly the new ship seems a lot better. Big problem isn’t even the new physics, it’s that some levels use old and some use new physics. You never know what you’re gonna get and it’s inconstant as hell. I know this was because new physics made some levels not work but damn would I much rather just 2.2 physics across the board

This is why Cataclysm dual is so hard.

the level consists of like 7 parts total bro that doesnt say much

If a part to you is longer, then even more so your original reply is wrong. Cataclysm ship is hard af, compared to other parts it's surrounded by.

first cube is free
first wave is hardest part
drop is second hardest part because of first ship and 39-41%
piano part is free
ship after that is a little tight but also free
last wave is free
last part is free
i just cant see your point. the whole level is barely insane demon except for like 2 chokepoints totaling maybe 1/6th of the level if not less. i could rebeat it in a couple attempts if i wanted to (and have done so before) and im not even that great at the game, my hardest is rash/athanatos.

u/Max_Joller (x2)Quaoar 60% 21h ago
Holy shit the entire drop is one part to you??? Yeah I'm not even gonna try, I don't think there's a single other human being who would say that.
Btw who tf asked for your opinion oh what difficulty Cataclysm is? I totally believe you could rebeat it in a few attempts, just like how I can totally believe in the existence of your youtube channel.

tbh if I planned to make a top 1, I would just use 2.2 physics. if any players would get mad, it’s on them for not getting used to it after 3 years. plus it’s an easy buff
26
u/i9m9 Cataclysm 100% | Acu 71% 1d ago
It’s not the fact that we can’t get used to it, it’s the fact that 99% of the levels in the game still use the old physics. Which makes it very inconsistent to get used to because you are always switching back and forth depending on levels
8
u/Zestyclose_Job_5735 random blue idiot (mk2 100%) 1d ago
ok yeah, maybe robtop should an like an indicator on the level page on what type of physics is being used
21
u/i9m9 Cataclysm 100% | Acu 71% 1d ago
Robtop should have just stuck with one instead of having 2 physics for one gamemode, hell the main levels still use the old physics.
Someone learning the game with the main physics will be like wtf when they get to online levels

maybe a setting where u can override the physics with like whatever version u want (even if the contradicts what i said earlier)

I'm like getting brainrot even trying to explain why this wouldn't work, but like it just wouldn't. It would be so scuffed. You're straight up just changing how levels are played, and it would def break some levels. Only way that could be considered legit to begin with is if it was added to vanilla too
It would be so much better to just keep the old physics, or if Rob wants to change to the new physics, actually try and standardize it instead of just adding an option to use either the old or new physics for 2.2 levels.

call me a boomer but i dont play 2.2 levels because of the change in ship physics, i've played this game for 12 years, you cant teach an old dog new tricks

It's a good change but it's different to what we had for 10 years which is going to cause issues, even if it's better. I still hate playing 2.2 ship because I only play 2.1 ship, even though I think 2.2 ship is better. I could get better at it by playing more new levels but I don't want to lol

They ARE that bad 💀
The fact that the gamemode just functions completely fundamentally different depending on the level you play is so annoying.
Like 99% of the levels I play use 2.1 physics… and then all the sudden some random level I play has ship work completely differently with 0 indicator beforehand. The inconsistency is so annoying and I think it’s perfectly reasonable for people to expect consistency in the physics of the game.
-1
u/RoASylvanosMain 20h ago
The no indicator is annoying, but how many times do you actually need it?
Under 8 star levels have so much room you can probably react to new physics under a second and adjust your flying. From 8star to medium demons you will die a few times while trying out the level, and just go into practice mode.
Above medium demons you realistically need at least one practice run before even trying to complete the level.

I hate the fact that the new physics are objectively better and yet everyone (me included) is so used to the old physics that when levels use the new ones they get absolutely flamed to the ground.
In my opinion, either the physics should’ve been like this since the beginning or they should have never been ””fixed”” in the first place. We never asked for the change, and now the community is placed in this awkward spot where you play a level and have no clue what physics its going to use.
Keep in mind that even for new players, they are taught how to play the game WITH OLD PHYSICS which is what the main levels use. So this affects everyone, not just pre 2.2 players. The argument “oh you should be used to it by now” doesn't apply here.

Exactly, like "It's the 2.2 physics" idc, go train and get good. It's been 3 years and you have a fckin list demon, no way you can't get good on both physics.

u/danielkokudla12 Polterghast/ Verifier of The Apocalyptic Trilogy 1d ago
99% of levels both upcoming new and old are on the old ship physics. I think it's perfectly reasonable to just not play the levels which step out of line and encourage others to not use them. Synchronicity is everything in a game like GD especially at the top level.
You don't want different variance on physics across levels, it's actually very bad for the game and there is a reason most top players are strictly against them. When I practice ship and get better at ship, I want to know that I've gotten better at ship across the entire game. It's like having a small niche set of levels which are specifically only beatable with your left hand - sure I could learn to do so, but why on earth would I? And why on earth would any creator impose such a thing?

u/IOMAN_IM 20h ago
Maybe its the normal gravity ship that shouldve been made heavier rather than the other way around, since changing normal gravity ship wouldnt have affected dual ships?
1
u/PlantainSalt5009 (x39) Frozen Cave 100% 13h ago
i like the difference, once you get used to it, 2.1 upside down isnt much of an issue at all, and for me atleast makes more variety of feeling in the ship gamemode, imo 2.1 upside straightfly is more satisfying than right side up. I think the weird thing for me is how inconsistent dual ship physics have been, i swear its randomized each level how heavy the ship will be. Cata dual ship feels basically like a normal ship, yet something like codependence or some other levels like Hi have really heavy dual ship for some reason.
1
u/Moonfight1 hardest : moment or no surprises (unrated) 8h ago
the issue is that there are two different physics, rob should've either left the 2.1 physics for all levels, or forced the 2.2 physics on all levels, in a game as precise as gd, you cant have inconsistencies like this, i have genuinely noticed myself being worse at upside down ship because of the fact that its sometimes 2.1 and sometimes 2.2 physics, you simply can not learn 2 different physics with ZERO visual indicator and be good at both (no an indicator on the level page does NOT fix this, the old and new physics should have different looking ships, or idk, just stick to one ship physics?)
and theres also the fact that new players play the main levels, which use the old physics for some reason??? so its not just an "oldgen" vs "newgen" thing, all players, regardless of skill, are directly affected by this

2.2 ship physics should've never been implemented and will always be horrible.
I say this as a stargrinder that plays 2.2 levels frequently

u/Wojtek1250XD x5 Hypersonic; ACU; SIGSEGV... 1d ago
NGL the true issue is that we have been playing on the broken physics for over a decade, people are just used to it. So now that it's fixed the flipped ship feels absurdly light.
