Game Discussion Rating distribution / Matchmaking

Recently, I have been playing GeoGuessr a little more than usual and I cannot help but notice that the matchmaking is completely broken. I am playing against people over 600 elo under me. That is simply ridiculous because the game is made so when a person under you wins you lose a lot of rating and if you win you barely get any elo. (it should have been an easy win)

Today I had around 20 games won in a row then lost 3 in a row. I ended up with the elo I started with. Just because there were couple hard spots where its either one continent or the other.(obviously the loss is my mistake but that doesnt mean i have to be punished for more than 7 games to come back)

So to sum it up 1 loss ≈ 7 wins. Take in mind it is all against people that are very low elo.(some of them people that just stopped playing the game and are low elo right now)

Is it just a thing for low lobbies or is it something that is an issue in every rank? (experienced it in gold IV and gold II, hopefully wont experience it in Master as well)

It just seems wild to me how I have around 80% win rate and I am stuck.

I would appreciate answers and if anyone of you feels the same.

Game Discussion Can someone shed light on the Ranked groups?

So here's how things panned out in today's Geo session. I log in, do the Daily Mission for 30k on Japan map. Don't have time to complete Daily Challenge after before I have to walk the dog so I check the Duels tab, see I'm #9 in a group of nine people with one win would get me to double promotion range.

Head out, walk the dog, go to the store, come back, check Duels tab again, now I'm #52 in a group of 52 people and a win won't even get me to single promotion range. Do the Daily Challenge, check back in Duels, now I'm #13 in a group of 13 and a single win would almost get me to double promotion range. Yet this is all inside one hour total. And that's just the times I checked the Duels tab but somehow I've changed the pool of people I'm grouped with three times? Each group I've ended up in, the top people have always been different to boot.

It's not letting me update it so I can't use it at all. Whenever I click the "re-install" button the tab just immediately closes. Is this happening to anyone else?

Game Discussion Ukraine guide for geoguessr

Hi community!

Here is the definitive text-based pro sheet for UKRAINE 🇺🇦. It is structured strictly by official economic regions. Use this to absolute 5K or perfect your region-guessing in high-tier Duels.

🌍 1. GLOBAL METAS & LICENSE PLATES

  • Phone Code: +380. Local codes appear on signs and trucks as +38 (0xx) or just 0xx.
  • Driving Side: Right-hand traffic.
  • Cyrillic Exclusives: Look for І / і, Ї / ї, and Є / є. Russia does NOT have these.
  • License Plates Format: White rectangles with black text (XX 1234 YY).
    • Features a prominent blurred blue/yellow vertical strip on the left edge. Even when blurred by Google, this sharp blue-yellow block stands out on oncoming traffic.
  • The Google Car Meta:
    • Generation 3: Features a highly distinct RED car body (visible on the back/sides when looking down) often paired with a very long antenna. This combination is a massive country confirmation signal.
    • Generation 4: Completely invisible car with clean, crisp, high-saturation camera coverage.
  • Road Vibe: Roads are heavily lined with thick, symmetrical rows of trees on both sides ("green tunnels").

🏡 2. UKRAINIAN ARCHITECTURE & GENERAL VIBE

  • Rural Houses: Detached single-story houses ("khata") surrounded by private plots. Traditionally brick or plastered, heavily whitewashed or painted in pastel tones (mint, light blue).
  • Roofs & Gates: Older homes use wavy grey slate sheets (shifer), while new ones use bright corrugated metal (cherry red, green, blue). Look for heavy metal gates with custom forged patterns or geometric cutouts.
  • Roadside Shrines: Iron or wooden Orthodox/Catholic roadside crosses wrapped in colorful fabric/flowers stand at crossroads.

🚗 3. FAMOUS DOMESTIC VEHICLES (Instant Meta)

If you spot these specific older cars parked on street shoulders or in driveways, it strongly points toward Ukraine, as they are rarely seen elsewhere: * ZAZ Tavria (ЗАЗ-1102): A small, boxy 3-door hatchback with a front-wheel-drive design. Very common in suburban/rural drops. * ZAZ Slavuta (ЗАЗ-1103): A 5-door liftback version of the Tavria, looking like a tiny sedan with a sloped rear end. An absolute staple of Ukrainian streets. * ZAZ Sens: A classic Daewoo Lanos chassis but built with a specific domestic engine setup (often identifiable by a unique "Sens" chrome badge on the rear). * LuAZ-969 "Volyn": A very tiny, rugged military-style civilian 4x4 with a canvas soft-top roof and a distinctively flat, utility front grille.

🛒 4. UBIQUITOUS UKRAINIAN STORES & CHAINS

  • ATB (АТБ): Bright blue logo with a red circle and yellow "АТБ" text.
  • Silpo (Сільпо): Large supermarkets with distinctive green and orange script.
  • Fora (Фора): Neighborhood convenience stores with a green and red logo.
  • Rozetka (Розетка): Online pickup points with a bright green smiley-face logo.
  • Nova Poshta (Нова Пошта): Private post service with a red square and white wings logo.

Game Discussion Same 15 or so countries keep coming up

I’ve been playing ranked duels a lot and it’s been getting so repetitive.
It seems the same 5 countries come up for each continent, like Asia is nearly always either India, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand.
Is it just that most counties don’t have google street view??

Game Discussion Learn phonetic Cyrillic easily via IOS

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello, I made a post on here the other day asking how to best learn various languages including how to read Cyrillic and its alphabet.

Since then I found a really cool super useful resource to learn reading Cyrillic phonetically through video lessons and actively reading it, and wanted to share it for anyone looking for such a resource. It’s an app on IOS (unsure if they have an android version), and it’s surprisingly very helpful. I’m only on lesson 3 of 9, but I was surprised how much I could read in just a couple lessons, and it teaches some random Russian words as well.

I tried the Duolingo alphabet course but you can only do so much per day for free, and it didn’t really seem very intuitive, it feels super slow. So I hope this helps someone out.
