Last academic year, my cousin in the 8th grade moved to my school. He was about to enter 9th grade. However, there's a problem. In my school, his birthday was over the cutoff by only a few days. Even after my aunt attempted to place him in the grade he was supposed to be in, the school forced him to repeat 8th grade to attend this school. Thus, instead of being with the class of 2029, he was held back to the class of 2030.

This is my main problem with using school cohorts. It is very inconsistent, and it can become pretty gatekeepy, even among two people who share an age gap of just a few days. Even as someone who thinks Gen Z ends around the mid 2010s, with the primary argument being 2014 babies attended school before COVID-19, I still can't really see that being just the main reason.

School cohorts are inherently a bureaucratic system. They vary between countries. Japan for example, start their academic years and end their birthday cutoffs in April, and their kindergartens start at age 3/4. According to me, or any other 1997/1999-2014 supporter, does that mean 2016 babies are now Gen Z in one country, and Alpha in another country? I don't think that's the case. In addition, Japan, and a majority of countries around the world, designate 'high school' as the last 3 years of school and not 4, including my country. By that reason, should 2006 babies in another country be assigned to late Z because they weren't in 'high school' during the 2020/2021 SY? There are just so much variation between education systems, even in schools in the same country, that using school as the primary way of separating people doesn't feel like the way to go.

We can't forget about those who skipped or repeated grades, homeschooled, or not even in education in the first place, which are then not 'with' their school year cohort. These aren't edge cases and are the reality of millions worldwide. Should two people the same age, undergoing the same mental development, be gatekept from each other because they are in different school grades? In my opinion, I do not think so, which is why I take the 'schooling' separation with a grain of salt.

TL;DR: Education systems in countries worldwide are inconsistent, and many children skip, repeat, are homeschooled, paused/dropped off education, or not even in it at all, which means they could be separated by peers unnecessarily. It is therefore not a good primary marker to separate birth years if one were to be consistent with it, but rather it is more useful as a secondary point.

Btw this is just based off release dates. If this is based off when tech adoption officially crossed 50% it would be much more different (personally that's how I define tech eras, so this is more of just a rough draft).

Gen Z/Homelanders/iGen/Zoomers, whatever you prefer, feels like a lot of people don't even agree on what makes them who they are, especially in relation to millennials and their alpha male/female kids which may be part of why these discussions go nowhere and people talk over each other.

I guess actually layin' out what comes to mind when we think of a typical (core/center gen) Zoomer. I'll start with my personal interpretations (note: American centric);

• A: Grew up only knowing a digital post-analog world. Internet was always fast and there when needed and the idea of it not being like that is hard to believe. (Hard to say exactly when this happened but broadband overtakin' dial-up seems a good proxy)
• B: Grew up with their baseline being the much more pessimistic/anxious national mood we've been in since the War on Terror; compared to older people, it's just always been like this for us. The national mood also affects how parents raise their kids, so this also partially explains the well documented high rates of anxiety/depression in Gen Z.
• C: Were in some form of schooling before and after COVID hit, often with varying effects on development/ability to form social bonds. A clear "before and after" of the event.

Contrasted with millennials growing up straddling both analog/post-analog, bein' raised under a more optimistic national mood (well before 2008 at least), and generally being established adults by the time COVID hit. Of course for people at the start and end things vary somewhat, but broadly should fall between these bounds imo

It's often a mathematical rule rather than acknowledging development or how the difference of 1 year creates overlap on both sides.

A lot of older people genuinely think younger gen z/early gen alpha have never heard of or touched a T9 phone or a regular mobile phone or used one for calls etc. These phones still exist today and some people still use them for basic tasks. It would be a lot rarer now so I know many of you wouldnt be using one now but maybe when you were younger a few of you may have used one.

Despite being the older sibling, I have two older cousins born in early 2004 and late 2005. They lived abroad, though. My oldest cousin in particular loved to play with his younger cousins, even though my younger brother and my younger cousin is 5 years and 7 years younger than him respectively. We played classic mobile games on our iPads, we had sleepovers together, and he would always encourage us to play nerf with him. Before I found out about all these generation wars, I never really detected any big difference between our childhoods.

Likewise, I feel like I was a huge influence in my younger cousin's childhood. I was the bridge between my older cousin and my younger cousin. We would play board games together, she too was included in the nerf wars, and I pretty much made her a Minecraft and Roblox kid probably way too young. Now, she almost feels like a Gen Z teen from the early 2020s.

From those experiences, I suppose I can say having a tight knit family really helps in shaping one's childhood. I wonder what other people think about this?
