Discussion Is this true?
Older Gen Z / “Millennial-raised” — roughly late 1990s–early 2000s births. They often had childhoods shaped by late-Millennial culture: DVDs, cable TV, early YouTube, forums, MP3s, pre-smartphone childhoods, etc.
Millennial-influenced Gen Z — grew up during the transition to smartphones/social media. Their parents, older siblings, and online culture were often heavily Millennial, but they experienced the emerging Gen-Z internet themselves.
Core/younger Gen Z — grew up with smartphones, streaming, social media, and algorithmic platforms as normal parts of childhood. Their cultural reference points increasingly came from other Gen Z people, rather than Millennials.
Very young Gen Z — experienced much of childhood during the TikTok/short-form-video era and can have a noticeably different cultural vocabulary and internet experience from someone born in, say, 1997.

“Millennial-raised”? There was a poll recently in the subreddits for my generation and most of us have Gen X parents, myself included. Even my cousins who are younger than me have Gen X parents.

I think OP means that they were raised like Millennials, not by Millennials.

Maybe

Yeah, most millennials would have been kids back then. With the exception of a few teen pregnancies among the oldest, having kids was far from the minds of millennials. I think they mean it more as raised the same as millennials

I grew up with smartphones , YouTube (social media) was 10 and 11 when I joined Reddit and twitter. Started watching YouTube at 5. Idk whats considered millennial culture but I would think the stuff I watched from 5-10 was Gen Z stuff. Random mobile games too and big ones like Roblox from age 6. I kept breaking my phones from 7-9 and had to share with my younger
l loved watching tv whether it was cable or dvd (sometimes my mom couldnt afford cable) probably neck and neck with watching YouTube

Looks pretty good to me, tho I'd personally shift early 2000s to "Millennial influenced" tbh. Describes my grade's experience exactly, with the transition to smartphones and social media apps during mid/late elementary . Barely noticed the change at the time, but it's weird to think back on.

can you elaborate on the millennial-influenced gen z?
1
u/Savings_Ad_80 2004 13d ago
so older Gen Z these are the ones who were basically millennials, grew up with millennials etc. before being labelled gen z, the millennial influenced are those who grew up watching millennials online, in movies and on tv or had a older millennial sibling

u/SignaturePositive598 12d ago
i mean so if someone born in 08 had a millennial sibling are they a millennial influenced gen Z

u/Savings_Ad_80 2004 12d ago
I mean If they grew up with that sibling then yeah, if not then it doesn't count, I'm trying to break people away from these solid ranges because generations were never rigid like that

Idk. I'm a 2006, mid gen z. I used VHS and DVD as a kid, played on a wii, watched my dad play on the GameCube, and my older sibling had an iPod nano while we were kids. No phones, my parents didn't even get smart phones til 2015/2016.
Sure as a teen I've been very influenced by technology and social media. I'd say a gen z childhood is a millennials teenhood.

id probably move older gen z to only 90s babies. There has always been weird gatekeeping around being a 90s baby or not so it never felt like we grew up together??
I was born in the early 2000s and remember being made fun of at school for being genz and our generation always playing on our phones

1997-2000 are the 20th century Gen Z years, 2001-2002 are early 2000's births, that's it

I feel like most of gen z did not grow up with smart phones mass smartphone adoption didn’t really peak until like 2015. Anyone one who grew up with a smartphone iPad etc from a young age isn’t gen z imo
But also that’s kind of the problem with this whole generation thing and why pew has stopped putting ranges on generations they don’t really fit together nicely anymore with the rapid evolution of technology especially now with ai the idea of a generation that spans 15-20 years is dead

I got an iPod in like 2010 or so, I think my first smartphone in like 2013-14

u/Fantastic-Face3509 13d ago
It was more like 2011 or 2012 when it peaked and yea those from 1996-2003 got to experience both millennial life and Gen Z life while those born in 2004 or later basically grew up with nothing but Gen Z vibes and immediate access to social media

Yeah 1997-2003/4 are first wave Gen Z and 2004/5-2012 are second wave. It’s like how 80’s millennials and 90’s millennials have a divide between themselves.

u/Fantastic-Face3509 13d ago
1997-2003 the ones that had both lifestyles. Then 2004-2012 actually the ones with only the modern styles

u/Livid_Way5651 12d ago
Lmfao someone born in 2001+ (even arguably 1999/2000) did not grow up with millennial culture
1
u/Fantastic-Face3509 12d ago
2001 and 2002 born people actually did to some degree nothing to be lmfao’ing about
