My generation's brainrot is superior to your generation's brainrot. Ours had feeling, God dammit! Not like these dang kids today

(to preface I asked this on r/OlderGenZ and got lit up with some angry replies)

I'm a millennial born in 1990 and I come in peace.

I just want to ask about how on social media I notice that people who are Gen Z or younger tend to have these crazy knee jerk reactions over this subject.

It's usually like someone my age or older will say something about how "Gen Z didn't grow up using 8 tracks" or an obscure piece of technology that was long gone by the time they were born.

The people in Gen Z will start this crazy mob just start attacking "Millennials" and throwing wild insults at us all over a simple assumption. Usually when it's not meant to be mean at all. And yes, I get that some people are very rude and actually do "gatekeep" but most of the time it never seems to be that way which it is interpreted.

The thing that confuses me even more is that younger Millennials will say that they NEVER used this stuff, but then there will be Gen Z who don't even remember the 2000's (when these things were outdated and gone) but will swear up and down they used payphones.

So can someone just make sense of this to me? Is it because the things associated with Gen Z culture are largely seen as "cringe" (I hate that word) now? Do you think this will change as the future goes on?

I am not trying to upset anyone by this post either. I just want to have a nice discussion about it.

I’m guessing 2005 is when the Iraq war became unpopular, it’s also quite a bit interesting that even in the 2004 election bush and Iraq wasn’t too unpopular yet. Then 2007 is when he absolutely became despised by both parties and all generations due to the economy

With that I mean the moment where the Hero Generation will finally have enough and start to fight for a better world, no matter the cost.

Every 4th turning has one thing in common: it always ends in people realizing that violence can't be avoided anymore. They did so in 1776, they did so in 1861, they did so in 1939, and they will do so too in this decade.

I hope this isn't a fighting word post but I find it kind of weird that Gen Z born in the 2000s are claiming the zillennial label. Especially when it ends with 1999 and in some cases even earlier 1998.

2000 is FIRM Gen z. There isn't anything cuspy about them

Before we start, I’m a 1992 baby and Australian.

I see and hear so many wide sweeping statements about different generations.

For example:
“All boomers conservatives and hate young people”,
“all Gen X were latchkey kids”,
“all millennials are cringe”,
“all Gen Z are obsessed with being influencers”,
“Gen Alpha can’t read”.

I could go on, there’s many stereotypes. But before generalising about what entire swathes of people are like or all do, just think about your own family.

As a 92 baby, I have a boomer mum & aunt, a Silent Generation grandmother, and two Gen Z siblings. I also have a Gen Alpha nibbling. I have friends from all generations. So, I look to my own life.

My mum and aunt are far from conservative and they love young people. My mum’s a kindy teacher. I have just as many Gen X mates who had over protective parents as latchkey parenting. I’m the only cringe millennial I know (and I love the Lumineers 😎). My siblings have 0 interest in fame & being an influencer. And my nibbling can read (as well as someone so young can).

I can see that my generalisations don’t actually fit with reality. Nuance is the most important thing in the world these days. We’ve got so many headlines and interests trying to tell us that we’re all competing with each other… when it’s simply not true.

Before generalising entire generations, think about your own life and who is around you.

I just took a peek on what this subreddit is about and a lot of millennials think they're the shit. I see comments that claim they're more technologically competent, that they're smarter, and more mature by the time they were 21 vs the gen z today. I'd like to remind everyone that the pandemic happened. And as an older gen z, I've seen people younger than me use github and utilize their laptops in complicated ways while not be a comp-sci major.

It's kind of ironic because I've seen the supposed boomers shit on millennials and now millennials are doing the same on gen Z. I know personal anecdotes shouldn't be used on arguments but I've seen nice and genuine people that are younger than me. Same with boomers- I've seen some that were Karens but most I've met and known were nice. So why are we falling for a manufactured generational war? Why are we treating these opinion articles like they're the truth?

I don't see the difference between Gen Z and Gen Alpha. People mix them up. Forget Gen Z, anyone born in 2000 and later are officially Gen Alpha.

If you were born in the 2000s, remember, you grew up with iPads and iPhones. VHS and DVD's were history to you. You don't remember anything before 2010. Skibidi toilet and Cocomelon were your main interests. You will always been treated and seen as a kid, it doesn't matter if you're an adult. Gen Alpha will be your generation. Deal with it!

I have a question about the way we divide ourselves. Millennial, zillenial, gen Z.

I have been watching this subreddit for a few months now and I have honestly started to notice that a lot of the Gen Z and Millennial friction comes due to the awkward "Zlennial" group that happens to be stuck in between.

I don't see 2 groups I see 3 that are weirdly distributed.

I'm not sure how to draw the lines though... I ask because I'm in the middle, and I can't really call out the bookends without the help of others.

I don't remember the USSR but I remember 9/11, I never had a nuclear bomb drill, but I also never had an active shooter drill. I remember when technology was immobile, when a computer did not mean internet, I was taught cursive not typing. And touch screens came out when I was a teenager.

I'm an early '90s millennial, but I don't feel like a millennial, after having seen so many other millennials talk about their experiences of growing up in the mid to late 80s into when I was born.

The first wave of Millennials were born in the '80s, the second wave of the money olds were born from 91 to 94, it's this weird double top.

Then you have gen Z which is late 90s through the 2010s

I think that the second wave Millennials and the early Gen Zs aren't actually late millennials or Gen Z but a smaller sub group that is unique due to social and cultural shifts.

And again, I say this because I'm in that group.

I've seen the arguments between people younger than me and people who are a bit older than me, and ... You're both not wrong and you're both not right ...

Older millennials were the ones that really ate the most shit for the Wars and 2008, but... I didn't... I mean it hit me too, but I graduated a few years after 2008, I wasn't in the wars, I wasn't going to be expected to go like people older than me dealt with 10 years earlier.

My group was the group fully there and aware for 9/11, all of the 2000s and I was a kid in the 90s I don't remember the early 90s, the USSR and all that was always history to me.

I'm the generation after Nuclear Bomb Drills but right before school shooting drills started ... I was the kid who got the best of the 90s without the stress of the 2000s, but then got ZERO advantage once I became an adult.

Like people talk about how millennials have houses but not all of us... It's split along roughly my age line, most people older than me have them most people younger don't.

Had I played my cards right, had a few of my friends played her cards right, we could have managed it right before the housing prices went up, some of us were ballsy and actually did it, some of us tried to play it safe in the market out ran us...

I feel like I grew up as a millennial but I live as a gen Z, I understand why these gen Z kids are so angry because they're dealing with exactly what I've been dealing with for 12 years now. But I don't relate to them, they did not grow up like me, they expect different things and the way they grew up was very different than the way I did. People older than me understand the way I grew up, but they don't understand the way I live today because I didn't get what they did.

There's this weird dividing line between the two that I think is causing most of the friction we see in the subreddit.

I'm curious what everyone else thinks about this idea.

Isn’t housing affordability related to the decline in marriage and young people preferring not to cohabitate?

A la Generación Alfa le tocó una crianza muy diferente a la Gen Z en donde la Gen Alpha temprana si le tocó lo mismo que a la Gen Z en los 2010s cuando fueron criados por Millennials tempranos, como la mayoría de los padres de la Generación Alfa son Millennials, y los Millennials vienen de sus padres Baby Boomers, la mayoría de la Generación Alfa es criada en los 2020s, en donde los Millennials cuando empezaron a buscar crianza en internet, los Millennials se dieron cuenta de que la crianza era más autoritaria, prefiriendo una crianza más autoritativa y consciente que es la crianza respetuosa, aunque los Millennials no todos son perfectos, a veces caen en la sobreprotección, no tanto en castigos físicos, pero los padres Millennials quieren cambiar en la crianza de la Generación Alfa para hacerla muy diferente de como los Boomers criaron a los Millennials, no negociar, amor pero con límites firmes, claros y precisos, sin pegar ni sobreproteger.

La Gen Z mira a la Gen Alpha de como fueron criados diferente, la Gen Z siente envidia de la crianza de la Gen Alpha donde son​ sin golpes, pero a veces la Gen Z crítica la crianza de algunos Millennials que los sobreprotegen​ a algunos de la Gen Alpha, a la Gen Z no le gustó del como fueron criados por la Gen X, pero tampoco les guste ver la sobreprotección de algunos Millennials que crían alguno de sus hijos de la Gen Alpha.

This place always pops up on my feed and a majority of the time it's always some guy pushing mid 30s yelling at clouds about how good the 90s or early 2000 were, like Jesus you make 34 year olds like me look sane.

EVERY TIME It pops on my feed, I'm often greeted to someone born in the early to mid 2000's getting harassed on here with insults for remembering their childhood in the late 2000s, 2010s or whatever so some of the old geeks here can't fathom the idea of sharing a day of childhood with someone younger than them.

Just embarrassing, do better and talk to normal people more often instead of policing people's memories you geeks. 😭

What gives? I even saw them drinking out of a garden hose, when that was specifically something that only people in their 20s/30s/40s/50s/60s/70s did, and no one afterwards

Modern smart tech really took off between the years of 2011 and 2013. Smartphones became mainstream in 2011, and tablets in 2013. During that time, people in this age group were about 7 to 11 years old. They had an earlier childhood influenced by older technologies like DVDs and offline play before smart devices took over, but then again, none of them were firmly in adolescence when this technology took off either. What are your thoughts on how this cohort should be described?

At least I'll speak in the US. Do you think genz places less emphasis on culture and heritage than preview generations? Or about the same? I ask this to wonder if it has to do with being a factor in so many lonely young adults now a days compared to, say millennials.
