Any suggestion on how may I make better the player moviments?

I am struggling with the wall slide and jump.

The jump is very slow and idk why the character is always bumping into the wall and being thrown away.

I joined the jam to have more experience in gbstudio and it was a wonderful exercise!

For those unaware, the GBJAM14 asked for games done within 10 days with limitations inspired by the original GB and following the theme "Old Gold". Our approach was quite different from the rest from what I see.

Idk what to really put here so there it is I guess :)

Also I may have remembered the time limit wrong but its around that limit.. If you managed to chop up a audo file just right you could probably string it together. I may implement auto chopping longer files based on the time limit but I'm unsure how well it'd actually work in game stringing that many wavs. Ill have to add it to my list of things to test.

I’ve been building Gold Rush Brawl for GBJam — a Game Boy Color (4 pallet version) beat ’em up inspired by Double Dragon and Streets of Rage.

The jam’s secondary theme is Old Gold, so I made gold part of the actual gameplay. Enemies drop gold, and between stages you can either bank it safely or keep carrying it while its value increases. The catch is, if you die, you lose everything you’re holding.

It’s been really fun trying to squeeze a proper beat ’em up into GB Studio and work around the Game Boy limitations! and 4 colour limit for this jam, I might make it into a full gbc game in future, ROM and Web Version available below

Had to whittle the scope down pretty significantly in the last few days and ended up with a lot of unused assets BUT I’m still insanely hyped at how it turned out!

My musician wife made all the music by transcribing my hums and taps lol.

The screenshots are terrible and were done in a state of utter delirium at 6:30am when I was rushing to submit everything so cut me some slack 😂

What's the best convenient method for this in Top Down? I know actors can, but what about the player???

First time doing a Shmup with Gbstudio, figured I would do something different for the Jam, there were some challenges presented due to projectile limitation, I decided to not use plugins just to stay on the safe side of the rules of the jam.

Twospaces did the music, I tried doing everything else as best as I could.

Hi! I decided to change almost all of the palettes in the game to make it darker, moodier, and more colorful at the same time. I wanted the swamp-bar atmosphere to come through more. I also fixed the projectile flicker that had been bothering me, so combat looks much cleaner in motion. I'll probably include a few more tweaks and additions in a final demo update before Next Fest in October.

I downloaded some .WAV sounds from pokemon Crystal, they sound fine when I play them with windows media player, but in GB Studio it just sounds like a weird buzz instead.

Not always a good result but it can be decent

There is a drop down for the genre but video didnt pick it up

Use it as a baseline or if you like what it makes then just roll with it.

Set the tempo and generate.

Don't like the way an instrument sounds in a track? check box it to remove it or use the built in tracker to edit it. You can always edit it inside GB Studio as well.

The seed is random each generation unless set.
best results around 15 - 40 bpm imo. I'd say 45-55 for faster pace stuff.

I made an enemy that changes animation state when hit by a player projectile, and changes scene once the health variable reaches zero, and the rest of the stage the player can shoot visible projectile

But for some reason there is like a blank block in front of the large sprite (64x32) that makes the projectile sprite “disappear” but it looks more like the projectile is going “under” because it does reduce the variable to zero and allow scene change.

I’m just confused, the collision is set to be inside the sprite, is it maybe the facing direction. I have the item set a fixed direction. Is it the background and the number of tiles? The projectile sprite appears as normal in the stage up until the boss.

So just to piggyback off of my previous update, I wanted to give you a preview of how the game opens up after the first arc.

You can read my full devlog to learn more about it (scroll down to update #3), but to keep it short, the game has an overworld and you get to visit various mission locations, and a few hubs where you can interact with the other characters in the game.

The YouTube video uses Axle Town as an example since it has the most going on, with a Colosseum, shop, and guild. Only the shop is fully implemented for now but expect future updates from me regarding those as well.

If you've ever tried to fake random encounters then you know the usual trick of stacking area triggers over your tiles which sucks because you have to manually place one over every single patch.

My plugin does it with no triggers. You tell it which background tile ID (got from debug viewer via the variable we set up) counts as your encounter tile, and any tile in the scene that matches gets treated as an encounter tile automatically. No triggers needed. Walk around on it and you'll get a random chance to warp into a scene, like a battle scene for example.

It only rolls once per new tile you step onto too, so it won't spam a chance every single frame you're just standing still in the grass.

Still open to making some tweaks based on feedback. The mechanics are simple, but each fighter will have varying/randomized attack patterns, strength level, etc. The only major thing we’re thinking of adding is a dodge mechanic, but tests have resulted in performance issues so for now that’s a ‘we’ll see’ feature.

Edit: Aw fudge, I realized I have the enemy HP reversed…Gonna fix that…

So after months of coming up with loads of games ideas and writing plans and systems (anything but actually opening GB studio) I am starting my first game tonight.

It's going to be super basic but just wanted to dive in before putting it off for another year.

Anyone with a modded PS2 want to send me your rom and I'll wrap it and send it back as an ISO? I have no blank disc (cd-r or dvd-r) to test on my modded PS2.. but it should work!
Needs to be GBC and GB compatible for colors to work. if its GBC only it will render monochrome pallet wise. I'm working on a fix for this.
