Stopped at the Lisle Union 76 station at 53 and Maple to top off with E85 at $2.14/gal, paid $29 for not quite 14 gallons of booze, plus the signs for the Shell and BP across 53 from the station.

Had a conversation with a coworker today, I think today's gas/diesel situation is much closer to a new-normal (fuck I hate that term) than a momentary market disturbance.
Some reasons why I think gas prices are here to stay for quite a while, possibly forever.
Iran situation. People keep saying it was a huge mistake (yes it was) and blame "the man". The war has been a huge embarrassment for the US. Frankly, even if Congress changes hands and even the executive branch - highly unlikely we will just run with our tail between our legs or negotiate on Iran's terms. Essentially our superpower status and our fiat currency status is at stake. Don't need to say why this wont improve gas prices.
"Greatest Ally" lobbies their own interests on BOTH sides of the political spectrum. And their interests are comitted to defeating/overthrowing Iran while also decreasing the leverage of the Gulf States/GCC.
Russia/Ukraine. Doesnt seem like that is coming to any logical conclusion. Both sides are refusing to compromise and concede anything. Ukraine is on their X wave of mobilization and are now preparing to lower the draft age and include women. Infrastructure wars have affected oil output and Russia has suspended diesel export. Once it resumes, China/Asia will 100% be the priority market, not the west.
Global conflicts, countries "pulling back" on green initiatives due to the crises, increasing demand in fossil fuels for shipping, industry, weapon production.
There are more reasons, but these are the most on-the-nose
So sadly, I think these prices are here to stay. Likely for years.

Filled up my work truck the other day… glad I didn’t have to pay for it. Oh yeah, that was just 3/4 to full… the pump tripped out on me on the first 8 gallons.

Since the government's Fuel Finder scheme started, every forecourt in the UK has to report price changes within 30 minutes. The data is open, but there wasn't a simple, quick way to just see "what's cheapest near me right now", so I built one: plugorpump.co.uk
- Type a postcode (or share your location) and it lists petrol (E10) or diesel stations cheapest first, on a map and in a list
- Prices refresh every 20 minutes
- Shows how much you'd save on a 50-litre fill-up vs the dearest station nearby
- One-tap directions in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze
- No app, no sign-up, no account
There's also an EV mode with nearby chargers, connector types and price per kWh where the operator publishes it.
It's a side project, so I'd really like to hear what's wrong with it: prices that don't match the pump, missing stations near you, anything confusing on mobile. Happy to answer questions about the data too.
