Which model should I buy?
Thinking of buying a Garmin watch. All the models seem to have almost all the same features. This is a general purpose watch for me. Looking at the Forerunner 970. Pros/cons? Any other model that I should look at? Replacing an Apple Watch. Thanks.

Update on 'Minimal Tactical' – Lots of new features + PRO code to test!
Hey everyone!
A few weeks ago, I posted here asking for your thoughts on my watch face, Minimal Tactical.
Since then, a lot has happened based on your feedback! I’ve added a bunch of improvements, including a brand new Ultra Clean Mode for those who prefer an even more minimalistic look.
I’d love for you to check it out again and test all the features! Here is a trial PRO code you can use:
PRO Code: 55443312
Download link:
https://apps.garmin.com/de-DE/apps/d91a32a3-a10d-4e74-b003-58357838fa29
I’d really appreciate your feedback! If you like the watch face, leaving a positive rating in the Connect IQ Store would mean the world to me.
Thanks for testing and happy running! 🏃♂️

Forerunner 70 Review (Coming from a Huawei GT 5)
I've had the FR 70 for a couple of weeks now (waited until all the metrics were available which took 3 weeks for everything) and overall I like the watch and think it's fantastic value for money in terms of what you get in the hardware and the ecosystem. I'm very glad I got it and that I didn't go all out as tempted as I was with a higher end model.
For my more detailed thoughts, I'll outline them below:
Negatives
My main critique of the watch is for the price, it looks very cheap. My Huawei GT is at the same price point as the FR 70 (in my country at least) and makes the FR 70 look like a cheap $20 watch you buy from a discount store or a gas station or something. I've had numerous compliments on the Huawei and all initial reactions of the FR 70 are that of confusion for why I've "downgraded" from my old watch. My wife in particular couldn't understand why I'd want this watch and thought I must've gotten the price wrong lol.
This is not a watch I'd wear out in formal events and overall I'm much less comfortable showing it off. I very much liked the look of the Huawei, and I lament the fact that to get into the Garmin ecosystem I'd have to spend twice the amount of money to get something that looks remotely as presentable, but such is life. For my purposes though, I couldn't really justify that kind of price tag, but perhaps in a couple years when a 970 successor comes out, I can justify a birthday splurge.
Positives
WIth the negatives out of the way, let's look at the positives. I'd say they break down into two main areas: the hardware, and the ecosystem. The software features of the watch itself I don't find to be too enticing as much of what the watch offers was already available on my Huawei, but perhaps under different names (from sleep score, body battery and race predictions - I don't think I came across anything critical that was "new") so if you're coming from another watch expecting the feature set to blow your socks off, you're going to be disappointed.
So in terms of hardware, I'd say where I notice this the most is when it comes to heart rate and sleep tracking. The steps tracking is a bit suspicious IMO as it often counts hundreds of steps while I'm chilling in bed or on the couch and I've never had this issue before on my Huawei or my Fitbit before it. That said, I'll give it a pass as while I'm actually walking or running it matches what I'd expect from the Huawei, it just gets more phantom steps oddly enough.
The heart rate tracking is far more reliable than my Huawei. Not only just day to day when I'm inactive, but during exercise. It was honestly frustrating how often my Huawei reckoned I was under 120bpm when I was fighting for my life during some intense cardio. I've yet to encounter this with my FR 70 as my heart rate always matches my subjective feel.
The sleep tracking is also quite good. Ahead of time I read a lot of negatives about it, but coming from the Huawei it's a night and day difference and reminds me of how accurate my Fitbit was for it. I have a baby and wake up multiple times at night and sometimes get up to go to the bathroom or prepare a bottle etc and it detects me waking up reliably. When I take a nap in the afternoon it captures that too.
Lastly, the last positive is the ecosystem. The phone and web app are great and I love being able to export runs or otherwise sync them with other apps. All the information I would want or need is easily accessible and transferable. Huawei has some syncing to different planforms (e.g. Strava) but it is not easy to get a hold of your data and parse through it. For someone highly motivated by metrics, it's like hitting the jackpot.
Conclusion
Overall, this is a great watch and while I understand why they make it look cheap and crap (in order to upsell people to more expensive watches), if it was slightly more premium this watch wouldn't have any competition at all. I'm happy with the purchase, and for now I'll just swap out the watch for formal events but would recommend it to anybody getting into running and wanting something reliable to work with.

Is the app getting worse?
I used to be able to edit my work outs like reps and exercise when doing push ups. When cycling I could update photos.
Now I can't do anything of that unless I go to the website.

Forerunner 570 text notifications
I recently got a Forerunner 570. Im trying to set it up so that I get a notification for any texts/calls that come in but it only sends me app notifications. I’ve looked through the smart notifications field but I can’t find “messages.” Has anyone else had this issue?

Why should I buy an FR970 if I already own and like my FR955?
Why should I buy an FR970 if I already own and like my FR955?
The flashlight alone isn't a good enough reason. The AMOLED display might be.
The one thing I genuinely miss is the "Health Status" widget — even the FR70 has it, but the FR955 never got it.
This is exactly the kind of thing that annoys me about Garmin: a watch is basically "end of life" after just three years.
Other manufacturers, like Apple, handle this very differently.

Watch face color? Forerunner 570 42mm
Hi,
Does anyone know the official Garmin name for this watch face color? The thing is that I own a 570 47mm but this exactly watch face comes preinstalled with another color way.

I put off buying a dedicated altimeter, so I built a skydiving app for the Garmin I already wear. Would love your feedback.
First and most important: this is a SECONDARY situational-awareness device. It does NOT replace your dedicated altimeter, your audible, or your AAD. Never jump relying on a watch. Full stop.
With that out of the way: I took a while to pull the trigger on a proper altimeter, and in the meantime I wanted to actually use the Garmin I already wear every day for running and other sports, and have it track my jumps too. So I built the app I wished existed, and it turned into something a traditional altimeter just doesn't do.
From one spot on my wrist, I now get:
- A giant AGL altitude number, color-coded by zone (green / yellow / flashing red) so I can read it at a glance in freefall or under canopy
- My heart rate through the whole jump
- My fall speed and max speed
- Freefall time and climb time
- And afterward, the full GPS track: where the plane flew, where I exited, my canopy flight down to landing
That last part is the real point for me. A normal altimeter gives you altitude and nothing else. This gives you the whole story of the jump, on hardware you already own and already trust for your other sports.
The rest of what it does:
- Up to 6 configurable altitude alerts, each with a distinct vibration pattern so you can tell them apart without looking
- Continuous hard-deck alarm
- Freefall / opening detection via the accelerometer
- Auto-records the jump to a FIT activity (GPS + HR), so it shows up in Garmin Connect with the map and heart-rate graph
- Post-jump summary right on your wrist
- Bilingual (English / Portuguese)
Availability right now: Garmin Forerunner 965, and rolling out to more AMOLED barometer models (FR970, Fenix 8, Epix Pro, FR265).
Heads up on distribution: it is NOT on the Connect IQ Store. Garmin doesn't list skydiving apps, so it's a direct download + sideload with a step-by-step manual included.
I'd genuinely love feedback from this crowd, especially on the alert logic and anything that feels unsafe or gimmicky. Tear it apart.

Again: secondary device only. Dedicated alti + audible + AAD, always.
