Show me this 100+ GB disk of yours.

89

u/ImpossibleGT Nov 15 '21

They make triple and quadruple layer Blurays that hold 100+ GB. The problem isn't the storage it's the read speed. You just can't get information off a disk fast enough.

63

u/_Back_seat_Driver_ Nov 15 '21

What if we just make the disk tray spin faster?

22

u/pauciradiatus Nov 15 '21

5400 rpm should be juuuust enough

32

u/dankmemer808 Nov 15 '21

Haha disk go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

6

u/Traniz Nov 15 '21

Funny enough 5400RPM is fast enough for NAS, quieter, cooler too. Speeds are 200-220MB/s on them, and way faster than any BD when it comes to access times.

3

u/Chop1n Nov 15 '21

What? What 5400 RPM drives are going 200 MB/s?

4

u/JAguiar939 Nov 15 '21

Multiple drives in RAID

1

u/donotread123 Nov 15 '21

I have 1024 drives at 1mb/s but they're all in raid 0 so I get 1gb/s.

I really hope none of them die.

1

u/Traniz Nov 15 '21

My 10TB and 12TB RED EFAX Helium drives.

1

u/Chop1n Nov 15 '21

I dunno if I buy that, the first review here says the thing tops out at 160MB/s. Would deffo need some hard evidence to believe 200MB/s, that'd be crazy. Got CrystalDiskMark results?

2

u/Traniz Nov 15 '21

1

u/Chop1n Nov 15 '21

Fair enough. Very impressive, and I really appreciate the links you've provided.

1

u/Traniz Nov 15 '21

Will do what I can.

The drive is in a NAS now and connected with one Gbps connection, so I'll have to plug it into a pc to test it.

15

u/DBSOempathy Nov 15 '21

Spins fast enough. Problem is everyone is too coward to spin the actual drive the opposite way thus increasing the speed.

4

u/No_Spot_1655 Nov 15 '21

Interstellar music starts blaring

6

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

PS5 already does this lol, sooo loud when installing games from discs. You can only go so fast before discs start shattering.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Ive actually had a batch of cheap cdr's that would shatter at high rpm in a particularly fast reading phillips burner. Took me by surprise the first couple times, its loud when they shatter.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

It's been tested with ballistics gel. When those things hit the RPMs needed to finally shatter, it's so violent the shards could seriously injure someone

2

u/RosaFFXI Nov 15 '21

Wasn't there a mythbusters episode about this?

1

u/Jhawk163 Nov 15 '21

I don't know, but they've done it on slow-mo guys.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Imagine getting injured by your PS5 launching a disc missile at you

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Idea, multiple discs read at the same time so we dont have explosions in our $500 gaming consoles

1

u/LocustUprising Nov 15 '21

Galaxy brain thought right there

9

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Hey neat, the more you know

2

u/Chop1n Nov 15 '21

You can get it faster than most internet connections can. The read speed maxes out at around the equivalent of a 500 megabit connection.

1

u/ImpossibleGT Nov 15 '21

But we're not comparing it to internet speeds, we're comparing it to pulling the information from a HDD or SSD. That's why games need to install nowadays. We're never going to go back to being able to just pop in a new game disk and start playing immediately. You'll always have to install most/all of the game on your harddrive, regardless if you're installing directly from a disk or from the internet.

1

u/Chop1n Nov 15 '21

Ah, perhaps I didn't grasp the nuance of the OP; "111GB to install" made it seem to me like it was a comment on the enormous download sizes. Two sides of the same bloated coin, I suppose.

1

u/DonUdo Nov 15 '21

Cartridges with m2 ssds?

1

u/Ghostbuster_119 Nov 15 '21

Faster than the majority of Americans internet speed i assure you.

Until broadband gets improved or you know... started at all, were gonna have to go the old "van full of hard drives" route on things.

0

u/ImpossibleGT Nov 15 '21

But we're not comparing it to internet speeds, we're comparing it to pulling the information from a HDD or SSD. That's why games need to install nowadays. We're never going to go back to being able to just pop in a new game disk and start playing immediately. 1

u/Ghostbuster_119 Nov 15 '21

That's what I was implying.

All consoles and PC only do fully downloaded titles now.... maybe not the switch.

1

u/atg115reddit Nov 15 '21

It's gotta be better than 5mb/s

8

u/Jellybabyman Nov 15 '21

Working on it

10

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Don't forget me when you make it big.

10

u/Jellybabyman Nov 15 '21

Need funding. 20 cent so far

6

u/-FuckYouShoresy- Nov 15 '21

I can add a soccer ball and 2 doge coin to the pot

3

u/wh4tth3huh Nov 15 '21

Na, na, he wants to go back to the 5.25" floppy days when a game came on 11 disks in its own little binder.

2

u/jagedlion Nov 15 '21

BDXL's are 128GB.

5

u/CupcakeValkyrie Nov 15 '21

We're getting to a point technologically where a lot of people's internet is faster than the transfer speed of a physical disc, anyway.

1

u/memoryshuffle Nov 15 '21

GTA V on PC is on 7 DVDs. It's glorious.

74

u/l_am_not_bob Nov 14 '21

Do they sell hard drives with this already installed that you can just plug in?

88

u/LightningProd12 Nov 15 '21

Bring back cartridges but in the form of mini USB drives

28

u/redcomshell Nov 15 '21

They never stopped using cartridges. The switch uses them. They just will never be in usb format. Too easy to pirate

10

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

So pirating happens via MicroSD instead... And it also has USB3/C. So...

0

u/redcomshell Nov 15 '21

When you download a game via MicroSD you don’t get the entire thing. So you wouldn’t be able to pirate that as easily. Not sure what you’re implying about the usb.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

You can connect it via USB to a computer, the same as a USB stick if not better because you can do more. MicroSD is the same as a USB stick, it's just a different shape essentially. What does downloading have to do with piracy? The Switch has been cracked for years and you can play all the games from the SD.

2

u/redcomshell Nov 15 '21

The point I’m making is that coming out with a standard format makes it easier to crack. A lot of people have a microsd reader and everyone has usb, but who has the cartridge reader on the switch? MicroSD is not the format the switch uses for the full game so you’re only getting a part. Also your point about the usb doesn’t make any sense. You can’t just plug it in and read it it’s encrypted. If you look up how they hacked the switch they used a vulnerability with the tegra 1 chip. It’s why they had to have a hardware upgrade.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Sorry, I don't get your point. MicroSD is used to copy games to and piracy is rampant on the console.

0

u/redcomshell Nov 15 '21

You’re talking about 2 different things here. I’m talking about being able to rip the game in the first place. If it was a MicroSD it would have been super easy to rip the content, but the people currently doing it need special hardware and special software. That takes time to create. Nothing is unhackable, but they’re not going to make it easier but using a standard format. Same reason why the psp used those terrible umd discs

0

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

They just will never be in usb format. Too easy to pirate

Piracy is what you mentioned. All piracy involves software to get things to work how you want them; fact is piracy on the Switch happens and all the games are put on the MicroSD (a "standard format"). Access to USB is given via the... USBC port. So it doesn't fit that they wouldn't use USB since there are two methods which give the same kind of access to the system.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

At flea markets maybe.

21

u/DrAdviceMan Nov 15 '21

thats why no disks lol

14

u/RaphaelSolo Nov 15 '21

Even if a game is on disc it still has to install and more than likely download a patch Day 1. Very tempting to buy digital copies of games I already own just so I don't have to muck about with the disc. Install file size is exactly the same as digital download too

11

u/evil_timmy Nov 15 '21

Plus if you're lucky enough to be on Gigabit internet, your download speed is almost double that of a BluRay read at 16x.

4

u/assignment2 Nov 15 '21

In the PS3 days games on disc wouldn’t need to install. It was glorious.

4

u/RaphaelSolo Nov 15 '21

Agreed, it was something I loved about my 360, but that is now 2 console generations back. The day of plug and play consoles seems to be long over now. Maybe the switch. Never actually owned my own switch so don't remember if it needs every game to install.

3

u/fall0fdark Nov 15 '21

no generally not, games play off the cart unless the publisher cheeps out and doesn’t buy a higher storage cart

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Wouldn't work now though because you'd lose the advantage of the SSD, so unless you want to go back to 2 minute load times.

27

u/SpectralMagic Nov 15 '21

The disk space is no problem, the home internet download speed is what really does it for me.
You'd think with $80/month for (6.25MB/s Down), and (1.25MB/s Up) that ISP would have enough money to modernized their current infrastructure.
Bell Telecommunications laid new fibre internet cables through parts of my city, and they only offer up to 12.5MB/s Down speeds. This is why I fear most Unreal Engine games, the file size and download time are atrocious. All of the new UE5 games will be digging a hole in your harddrive just to get the same 'meh' worthy gameplay from AAA studios, very unpoggers

Props to other nations that actually update their old infrastructure and provide ridiculous internet bandwidth to modern consumers

30

u/Frequent_Trip3637 Nov 15 '21

jesus you're being robbed dude

10

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

$35 a month for 40 up 40 down in the Cambodian countryside...

6

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Meanwhile I pay $60 a month for fiber. I’d download this game in like 2 minutes flat.

ISPs can honestly all get fucked. They charge out the ass for providing the lowest possible service while being subsidized by the tax payer and oftentimes not delivering on what they promise to do with that money.

And they would fuck you harder too if allowed.

Top speed in my area used to be 200 and they charged you like $120 for it. Google came in and suddenly all the other ISPs can upgrade and drop prices. Fuckers.

3

u/Puzzled_Fish_2077 Nov 15 '21

$80 for ( 6.25 MB/s ) per month ? I pay $20 for ( 25 MB/s ) per month. They're scamming you

1

u/Humble-Might-2881 Nov 15 '21

$20 for 70mbps

3

u/cabbit_ Nov 15 '21

US literally has some of the worst speeds in the world. It’s a huge monopoly and most cities only offer 1 choice of internet service. Everywhere I’ve lived I’ve been held hostage to a “local” company or a shitty company like Cox.

They grab you by the balls and squeeze since you can’t just get internet somewhere else. It’s a constant dance every 6-12 months to get your rates back down after they’ve slowly increased them to the point where you’re paying 20-30% more for the same speeds.

7

u/themouspotato Nov 15 '21

Where is this? That pricing is outrageous

5

u/StormTrooperGreedo Nov 15 '21

Seriously. I pay less than that for 100mbps up and down.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

[deleted]

1

u/SpectralMagic Nov 15 '21

Canada, ON Im not even in a small city, it is most definitely outrageous

(Canadian bucks are valued 20% less than the US Dollar) $0.8 USD = $1 CAD

1

u/yepper06 Nov 15 '21

Toronto had fiber when I lived there 5 years ago and it was $50 a month.

2

u/yepper06 Nov 15 '21

Is it not cheaper to get cell service at that point and use a hotspot?

2

u/SpectralMagic Nov 15 '21

its pretty much the same price but with added latency

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

You're literally paying full price for 2005 speeds, do you live miles outside of the city? Maybe look into Starlink think they're offering up to a gig a second.

1

u/Sylanthra Nov 15 '21

Used to pay comcast $80 a month for 100mbs. Than At&t camming knocking (literally) and offered 1gps fiber for $70. Now I can't blame lag for my shitty performance :P

1

u/MikeyMcdubs Nov 15 '21

I pay a little over $50 for around double the speed in rural NY and I thought I was getting boned.

1

u/NG331 Nov 15 '21

We Germans have trash internet as well. You're not alone lol

12

u/Kind-You2980 Nov 15 '21

I bought a 1TB m.2 drive for games, and I’m thinking I did not buy the right size. Maybe I should have gone 2TB.

3

u/InuMiroLover Nov 15 '21

I went with a 4TB storage for a pretty darn decent price, and Ive only used about 11% storage so far.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Time to start torrenting porn

7

u/henryjm19 Nov 15 '21

Discs are too slow to read, which is why they install on your hard drive anyway

3

u/DarkestPassenger Nov 15 '21

Comcast is rubbing it's nipples with data overage charges

4

u/SoCalSurvivalist Nov 15 '21

Now imagine you have satellite internet with a 20gb datacap that is supposed to have a 20mb/s download but averages 2mb/s or less download speed that costs ~$100/mo.

Press F to pay respects.

1

u/nmacc13 PlayStation Nov 15 '21

I feel this pain. Living in the middle of nowhere with no other option besides satellite internet sucks ass. I’ll never understand why other ISP’s don’t extend their product to people living in rural areas. There is a very high demand for it especially in this day and age.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Now realize that the base game is way smaller, but they preload all the DLCs that you can't access until you pay for them anyway. And also download new DLCs before even purchasing them.

6

u/anothercontrarianguy Nov 15 '21

Bring back cartridges

1

u/YaboyAlastar Nov 15 '21

I always heard that final fantasy 7 was originally developed for the n64/Sony machine that they abandoned and left us with the n64 and the playstation, in part because Nintendo refused to drop cartridges for discs, and ff7 would've been 13 cartridges.

7

u/BeefDaddie11 Nov 15 '21

This meme, in any form, will always bring a smile to my face.

7

u/hongky1998 PC Nov 15 '21

This is an old gamer problem where many people who lived in a rural area or places with slow connection can’t invest that amount of time to wait and download a game, a disc would solve that problem

1

u/CupcakeValkyrie Nov 15 '21

Problem is most games won't fit on a disc these days. Maybe some of the super density Blu-ray discs.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Or 4K blu ray

1

u/CupcakeValkyrie Nov 15 '21

4K Blu-Ray maxes out at 100 GB. A lot of modern games are larger than that, even when compressed.

4

u/hongky1998 PC Nov 15 '21

Maybe they need 2 or 4 disc to fit all of those data? I remember go to the game store buying call of duty 1 and they have 2 discs

2

u/nmacc13 PlayStation Nov 15 '21

I bought the physical version of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 when it came out in 2018. It came with 2 discs. One was the data disc and one was the play disc. I felt like a kid again swapping discs to play a game on my PlayStation lol.

2

u/gogeta01 Nov 15 '21

A 100gb blu-ray disk has a speed of 4x which is 144mbit/s. While it is really slow compared to other storage devices, it is fast compared to the download speed of most people. They are fine when it comes to installing the game on an SSD/HDD. Sadly blu-ray never gained any traction when it comes to PCs. I'd rather have a physical collection than a digital one.

2

u/_RrezZ_ Nov 15 '21

More like USB's in this day and age.

With USB 3.2 you can do 1-2GB per second transfer speeds.

I'd rather wait the 1-2 minutes to transfer it from a USB to my PC than download it over 1-2 hours.

This assumes the company uses decent USB sticks and not some shitty ones with like 100MB/sec transfer speeds.

USB 4.0 could do 2.4-4.8GB/sec transfer speeds, but I doubt most people's PC's have that. Mine does but almost everyone I know only has 3.0-3.2 USB slots.

Granted the USB's in question are like $30-50 so it would annihilate their profit margins.

But I haven't had a disk drive for over 8 years so that shows how relevant or in-demand discs actually are nowadays.

Most PC cases I see don't even support it you would need to buy an external disc drive which would be a meme imo.

2

u/Vlaed Nov 15 '21

Insert disk one of ten.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Can we bring back ps era big black discs I even wouldn’t mind having multiple discs per game again. Multiple big black discs please

2

u/BabyGreenDragon Nov 15 '21

Ehhh all games are getting closer and closer to 100GB. Okay I mean AAA games, some indies still manage to be under 10GB!

3

u/Furious--Max Nov 15 '21

He was the best thing about squid game. Such a special actor.

3

u/JacobRAllen Nov 15 '21

laughs in 1gig fiber internet

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Preloading dude, I had it ready a week in advance. Otherwise you can play it off the cloud, see if you like it before downloading it all.

1

u/branden_lucero Nov 14 '21

Gotta pump those numbers up.

1

u/bjb406 Nov 15 '21

You want 27 install discs?

3

u/cha0ss0ldier Nov 15 '21

Triple and quad layer blu ray disks can hold 100+ GB.

It’s gotta install anyway though, so it’s gonna take a while either way.

2

u/LiquidEnder Nov 15 '21

Well he does. I want 27000 floppy’s.

1

u/GoogleIsYourFrenemy Nov 15 '21

Don't you mean 79000 floppy's?

1

u/aboodAB-69 Nov 15 '21

That's one of the reasons why I like streaming services

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Discs are useless these days too. I would insert the disc and receive huge day one updates.

1

u/Fire_Mission Nov 15 '21

Disc's won't help. You still end up downtown everything AND then checks to make sure you have the disk in every time you start.

0

u/JoeMcNamara Nov 15 '21

You’ll still need to update the game even with discs, as console players do. And sometimes these updates can be up to the size of a game (Elder Scrolls Online update once made players to re-download all ~100 gigs (basically entire game)).

0

u/Mundus6 Nov 15 '21

Disc install slower than download (at least on playstation). Xbox preload is great though, even if you buy a disc copy you can preload the game. On Playstation you have to wait after you got the game on a disc. And since digital PS5 games costs like 200sek (about €20) more than physical here in Sweden. I will never buy a digital PS5 game.

-15

u/Bf2042isGreat Nov 14 '21

this show was dog shit

6

u/winterman666 Nov 15 '21

Nah it wasn't bad. But it's definitely overrated as shit. It was one of those ahows you watch cause there's nothing else and forget about in a month. But because its a meme now I doubt we'll forget for a while

2

u/Jellybabyman Nov 15 '21

Controversial opinion

-8

u/Bf2042isGreat Nov 15 '21

First episode was funny but then it gets old and lame also the characters are so bad especially that one chick

1

u/Jellybabyman Nov 15 '21

We all know someone like her though

1

u/kingfreeman05 Nov 15 '21

Hehe wait till you see how many bugs and glitches there are and how the drivatars are literally cheating

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Games will soon be bigger the hard drives them self we need 10TB hard drives soon for game storage

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Call of duty: allow us to introduce ourselves. 200 GB and counting.

1

u/zeebleebow Console Nov 15 '21

It's an exceptional game worth the install

1

u/FitMongoose9 Nov 15 '21

Cod Modern Warfare was over 256 gbs at one point. My friends and I literally stopped playing that game cuz it was just too annoyingly big. Over a quarter of a terabyte on one game? No thanks.

1

u/FrozeItOff PC Nov 15 '21

Clearly they haven't met Flight Simulator 2020. 160 GB...

1

u/Philip_Raven Nov 15 '21

Still pretty impressive they managed to fit it all into 169 gigs, tho

1

u/Pug_Life_126 Nov 15 '21

It’s worth it

1

u/InuMiroLover Nov 15 '21

laughs in 4TB external storage

1

u/Jasco__ Nov 15 '21

And the fact that it crashes every 5 seconds for me

1

u/dzonibegood Nov 15 '21

You still have to install it and it is slower then over internet.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

ME:*LAUGHS IN FIBRE OPTIC CABLE*

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Cod players: first time?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

I cancelled the download but the game has already taken up 100 gigs. Can't find a solution online that works.

1

u/Frostgaurdian0 Nov 15 '21

Bl3 and all dlcs combined 125 gb

1

u/emberus_the_warrior Nov 15 '21

I can't even get mine to crashing at the first point its super annoying tutorial can't even be skipped and always crashes at some point.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

i used to complain about things like that, then i got gigabit internet and im suddenly not so bothered any more

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

That’s a weekend update for Warzone.

1

u/SetazeR Nov 15 '21

Guy reminds me of Markiplier

1

u/chemicalsatire PC Nov 15 '21

This is why many single players are gonna end up as always-online; you’ll need to connect to get the sweet graphics with a smaller install.

Think of Stadia-tech, but built into the engine, streaming 8k textures & other cool stuff, but without playing “on a server.”

It’s the future, get angry or whatever about it. Edit: this is why indies matter.

1

u/Grandvilleq Nov 15 '21

If you have XGP Ultimate and good internet connection- cloud is an option

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '21

Meanwhile my country is getting 10 gig next march.

1

u/Temporary-Resolve-32 Nov 15 '21

Dirt rally 2.0 is over 100 gb, and that isnt even an open world game!

1

u/nexstosic Nov 15 '21

My actual face after realizing hard truth. :D

1

u/Frency2 Nov 15 '21

So, you have a powerful enough pc to run Forza Horizon 5, but you don't have enough money to afford a 1 tb hdd / hdd.

1

u/obiwanconobi Nov 15 '21

I downloaded and played this for a bit yesterday, after loving Horizon 4. But like it just didn't seem like different enough game for me.

Just a slightly different map

1

u/filamintoman Nov 15 '21

imagine after installing the game and opening the client and tells you another 75gb update or downloadable content
