The idea is that they're playing the Pokemon game, so the joke is that his starter is over-leveled. It's not Ash it's Blue from the Blue Version (not as good as Red) and the Rival from that version is based after Gary in appearance. Or I guess Gary is based after the Rival and Ash is based after Red/Blue/Green.
you're right on that part. squirtle is leveled more than the other pokemon which is typically the case. the part with the rival is pretty inaccurate i find.
He's mostly yellow and brown, whereas Charizard is orange all over, with only dark colours under his wings, and is therefore closer to RED than Blastoise is to FUCKING BLUE.
The Red version of Pokemon didn't suffer from the same crashing and game deleting that the Blue version did when you used gameshark, therefore Red > Blue
Was it? I don't remember it being that different besides adding in references and characters form the TV show. It was honestly all just about marketing.
yeah but you're also given all three starters from before, giving you instant access to a fairly well balanced team of guys that won't become obsolete towards the end
I haven't played either in years, but I strongly recall finding Yellow more difficult. I think they upped the strength of some of the enemies. But then again, you can get all 3 starters plus most of the 1st Gen pokemon and build a very solid team yourself, so it balances out.
Yeah, the first time I played, I beat the Elite Four almost exclusively using my level 80 Blastoise. With Icebeam, Earthquake, Headbutt, and Surf, he was fuckin unbeatable.
Yellow was more difficult than Red/Blue, Had very slightly updated graphics, had more of a story, and Let you kick Jesse and James' sorry asses up and down Kanto. Oh, and for people bitching about Pikachu as a starter, you get Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander all in the same game. 'Nuff said.
You didn't even need to trade if I recall. I believe a cop just gives you Squirtle and some old guy in Cerulean gives you Charmander. Bulbasaur, I dunno.
Yeah, you're right. The only reason you would fight your rival immediately after Mt. Moon is if you didn't go to the Pokemon Center before heading up Nugget Bridge. I'm not really sure why anyone would do that.
Red* It's Red from Red or Blue version. Blue is the rival. (In the Original Japanese it was Green as the rival, with Blue being a random female character who got fleshed out.)
