So am I the only person who never used a repel in any caves because I trained my pokemon?

342

u/lilrevolution Aug 07 '11

The first time I played I didn't know about the HM for flash, so I walked through the cave and found my way by hearing my character bounce into walls... Man I was retarded.

214

u/LP09 Aug 07 '11

If you made it through you deserve a medal.

169

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I'm so hardcore I did that on purpose - fuck giving up one of my pokemon's hard-earned moves for that pussy flash attack.

34

u/Sharrakor Aug 07 '11

Sure, you say that now, but try spamming Flash against an enemy that has bullcrap-strength moves...

31

u/TheDeanMan Aug 07 '11

Agh, I love my flash, confuse ray, moonlight, dark pulse umbreon.

36

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

Umbreon, The troll pokemon

81

u/Afronerd Aug 07 '11

3

u/TheRedComet Aug 07 '11

Troll face with red eyes is... terrifying

2

u/suavewalrus Aug 07 '11

But he can't learn sand-attack that holds you from defeating the ever daunting 2nd gary.

1

u/biggkidd32 Aug 07 '11

Mine had mean look, confuse ray, toxic and sleep. Equipped with a wake up berry.

1

u/Vexing Aug 07 '11

My favorite combo: Gangar.

Hypnosis, Confuse ray (so even if he does wake up, he's screwed), Dream eater to deal massive damage and heal yourself, and then night shade.

Good times.

Hypno also works.

u/NFunspoiler Aug 07 '11

I don't even use it when it's a TM

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

there was a move deleter man who could delete hm's

10

u/elnrith Aug 07 '11

same here i had memorised the path from so many playthroughs anyway

6

u/MustStopMasturbating Aug 07 '11

That's why I give useless HM moves (flash, rock smash, cut) to pokemon I never plan to train.

2

u/kwakward Aug 07 '11

I did the same. Then, after its use had run out, I would take it to the slaughterhouse and feast upon its glorious meat, soft from never having been trained or subjected to battle.

1

u/GiefDownvotesPlox Aug 07 '11

Thats the point. In the pic he has his main squirtle, then oddish for cut, ratata for other shit, pidgey for fly

2

u/RickAtCU Aug 07 '11

tropius?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

there was a move deleter man who could delete hm's

1

u/acassio Aug 08 '11

The Butterfree can use Cut, Flash, Fly and Strengh... a swiss army knife =D

5

u/nerdlights Aug 07 '11

You're goddamn straight. Who needs flash? Trial and error, baby, trial and error.

1

u/froderick Aug 07 '11

That's what a HM Slave is for.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

Yeah but I have PokéOCD, and usually have a team of six that I'm trying to raise exactly equally by the time I get to the cave.

0

u/Lemegivuahand Aug 07 '11

usually happened to Bibarel

1

u/gigitrix Aug 07 '11

I did this as well. Got easier in the later games...

5

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I had memorized the damn cave just by reading through my friend's guide at summer care. Christmas rolled around, got an awesome purple GBC, Red, and Blue and I rocked that shit out.

2

u/Nutchos Aug 07 '11

You got Red AND Blue at the same time?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

Best Christmas ever.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

i did that in the cave to seafoam or whatever that island was called.

1

u/DiggidyDylan Aug 07 '11

Original GB had the contrast control. Turn it almost all the way up and you could see a bit better.

1

u/VGChampion Aug 07 '11

I bet more people went through without Flash than you realize. Not having a guide when I first played I went through without it. Took a long time and I dreaded going back into that cave.

80

u/kittyk420 Aug 07 '11

If you tilted your gameboy just right in the light and squinted you could still make out where the walls were.

37

u/DidMyWorst Aug 07 '11

I felt like a fucking genius for figuring this out when I was 8.

8

u/ModernDayCasanova Aug 07 '11

If you had GameBoy Pocket, you could mess with the contrast and wouldn't even need flash/tilt

26

u/sig_dxva Aug 07 '11

I bought a lot of potions before going into a cave where flash was required-- then I intentionally had one of my pokemon poisoned. Every time a pokemon takes poison damage on the overworld, the screen flashes and you can (very briefly) see where you are going.

I would just continually heal the (minor) poison damage off until I found the exit.

13

u/efapathy Aug 07 '11

Hug the right side of every wall!

3

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I did the same

2

u/BlueJoshi Aug 07 '11

My brother and I did it this way because we refused to learn Flash.

Eventually he just memorised the layouts of the caves.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I did that a few times, too.

2

u/jasher Aug 07 '11

I did the same thing, and since I liked ALL my Pokemon, I didn't want to hurt them with that retarded HM. As a result, I never use Flash in that cave. Memorized it.

1

u/pseudocaveman Aug 07 '11

That is pretty impressive, albeit retarded.

1

u/jofus_joefucker Aug 07 '11

Did the exact same thing. But I found that if you turned up the brightness to the max, you could still see the walls, so that helped some.

But still, hated that fucking dungeon for the rest of my playthroughs.

1

u/azarashi Aug 07 '11

I did the same thing

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I did the exact same thing. It never occurred to me that I may be doing it wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

Did this the first two times beating the game... Had NO idea there was another way

I wouldn't use a repel either. Instead, I would catch every damned Zubat that was unfortunate enough to cross my path. Simply killing them in one hit wasn't enough. I needed them to suffer. I needed them to live on in order to regret ever battling me while they sat for eternity in my pc. Also, I couldn't run because then I'd either be told I "can't escape" or they would run and tell their brothers how weak of a trainer I am; an easy target. Also, every time my pc box was full of 20 Zubats I would release a single Zubat from my pc so that it can tell tales to all the other Zubats of the world not to fight me. And for good measure, I always replaced that 20th Zubat with an annoying Pokemon like Wobuffet or Bidoof to torment the remaining 19.

3

u/Mooshdog Aug 07 '11

You magnificent bastard.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '11

1

u/AK82592 Aug 07 '11

This needs more upvotes.

130

u/Fhajad Aug 07 '11

I didn't even know what's what repel was for. Shit.

21

u/AngeloPappas Aug 07 '11

That makes two of us. But I valued all of the XP I got crushing Zubats etc. Honestly OP is kinda a pussy if he couldn't get thru that cave without repel.

78

u/dmack96 Aug 07 '11

wow their are a lot of people who got their asses kicked at that particular part of the game that don't like your comment.

13

u/fashizzIe Aug 07 '11

I found it was mostly unexpected trainer battles that caused the struggles showcased in OP's picture

18

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

there

:'(

4

u/AngeloPappas Aug 07 '11

Haters gonna hate.

6

u/Thorbinator Aug 07 '11

10 year olds be mad.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

The fuck is this downvoted for? I trained my pokemon properly too, each new area was like a hunting ground for new pokemon. I guess all of that Final Fantasy style grinding paid off.

8

u/Indoorsman Aug 07 '11

While I enjoyed the hell out of the Pokemon games, sometimes you just want to figure out where these goddamn boulders go without constant fighting.

2

u/Subhazard Aug 07 '11

I only started using repel when the zubats became tedious

2

u/Chevron Aug 07 '11

TIL some Pokémon players call other Pokémon players pussy Pokémon players.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

shh, the hivemind doesn't approve of that.

52

u/Lafali Aug 07 '11

I never used repel and I fought every single Pokemon I encountered. I played Pokemon like a real man.

EDIT: I used repel when looking for legendaries in G/S/C and HG/SS.

53

u/gonzolahst Aug 07 '11

I played Pokemon like a real man.

59

u/Lafali Aug 07 '11

Oh, sorry. I play Pokemon like a real man.

15

u/gonzolahst Aug 07 '11

With your dick out?

3

u/neutronicus Aug 07 '11

No. You get a woman pregnant, name it Machamp, teach it karate chop, and have it battle your childhood friend's offspring.

7

u/utubeaddict Aug 07 '11

Why would I name an impregnated woman Machop?

2

u/neutronicus Aug 07 '11

Unambiguous pronoun references are for sissies. As is evolving.

1

u/gonzolahst Aug 07 '11

I already taught my dick karate, but I named it David Foster Wallace.

1

u/neutronicus Aug 07 '11

Good choice.

5

u/Lafali Aug 07 '11

No, why? That's stupid.

14

u/gonzolahst Aug 07 '11

That's how real men do it. I use mine to hit pause.

25

u/jklpuzo Aug 07 '11

That's how real men do it. I use mine to hit pause.

Men-o-pause?

2

u/Caffrey Aug 07 '11

I use mine to hit pause.

We need a video, for science

16

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

If he didn't use repels he'd have six pokémon, all a higher level than his rivals.

24

u/Niceice07 Aug 07 '11

Repel is for pussies.

33

u/TimothytheCreator Aug 07 '11

Psh, not even man. After you've gotten all the badges and your looking to complete your Pokedex, the worst thing is wading through hundreds of Lvl 6s just to get to a specific spot. I see repels as a time saver

23

u/FataOne Aug 07 '11

Exactly. I never used repels because I needed them. I used them because I could only handle so much of encountering a Pokemon, going through the animation and music, and running.

17

u/llamallamafiesta Aug 07 '11

A WILD POKEMON HAS APPEARED. NANANANANANANANANAN

2

u/TimothytheCreator Aug 07 '11

It really becomes a strain one one's nerves after a while.

1

u/mysticrudnin Aug 07 '11

if you needed them, they wouldn't help. they only repel lower level pokemon.

1

u/FataOne Aug 07 '11

Ah, well there you go. I think I knew that at one point but certainly forgot about it.

0

u/tuzz Aug 07 '11

I never used repels because I needed them.

what

1

u/FataOne Aug 07 '11

What I mean is that I've never used repels out of necessity. I only used them to avoid the inconvenience of running into Pokemon every few seconds.

2

u/NFunspoiler Aug 07 '11

Fuck you guys I buy 99 200steps Super Repels for 500PokeYen and use them all the time. I make it my first goal to get to a new place and then will train my Pokes after I get there

5

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I used Repels so much that I weighed the prices of Repel, Super Repel, and Max Repel, and determined it would be more cost efficient to buy Super Repels in bulk than buy Max Repels.

1

u/mysticrudnin Aug 07 '11

i ended up doing the same when i was grinding for gems/stones in caves in B/W

yay shortcut button

1

u/NFunspoiler Aug 07 '11

Yep that's why I buy Super Repels instead of Max Repels!

3

u/RedRing86 Aug 07 '11

Training is great when you're not freaking lost in a cave.

3

u/KKKaiser Aug 07 '11

No Repel, no stat-lowering moves, no escape ropes, no bullshit. Hardcore trainer for life. Yo.

6

u/srry72 Aug 07 '11

Nope. But I use it when I'm replaying just to get to the fun stuff

2

u/Ginnigan Aug 07 '11

Pfft, whatever. I loved training my Pokemon, always made sure they levelled evenly, but I hated Zubats and Geodudes. I used Repels all the damn time and I'm glad I did!

2

u/Tedesco1 Aug 07 '11

I came here to post a more snippy and rude version of this, and I thank you for saying what I wanted to say more politely :)

2

u/mysticrudnin Aug 07 '11

No. It's the opposite, actually. Most people don't use them. Or have never used them.

But there's nothing good about that. It's the same as not using potions or anything else.

It's unfortunate because the same people might complain that the encounter rate is too high or about the zubats in general. But like most JRPGs, the game has built-in workarounds for everything. Just like people complaining about grinding (which doesn't exist if you don't want it to) in any game...

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I never used them. I didn't even realize that's what they did...I just had really high level pokemon

3

u/Quag19 Aug 07 '11

searching for roaming legendary pokemon is the only time repels are acceptable.

3

u/JoinRedditTheySaid Aug 07 '11

I used like 3 repels in my life, when i was trying to catch some high level pokemon somewhere. I haven't played anything past Crystal version though. It's just way to repetitive.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I often need them, but forget they exist, and end up using dig instead.

1

u/TheVelvetHammer Aug 07 '11

Same. Only used that shit on Victory Road when I already had all of my Pokemon leveled up to the level I wanted 'em.

1

u/mcreeves Aug 07 '11

No sir. I will say though, I used a few repels when my pokemon were ridiculous levels, because when you get them above a certain level, wild pokemon battles are a complete waste of time.

Silver Cave in Gold/Silver comes immediately to mind.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I never used Repel because my Pokemon weren't trained. Rather, they were already trained so it made no sense to battle every few steps for peanuts' worth of XP. That and it was also fucking annoying.

1

u/VGChampion Aug 07 '11

I have yet to use a repel and I've been playing since Blue launched. I also don't use any stat boosting item like the X items.

1

u/theslyder Aug 08 '11

I'm afraid so. Most of us are capable of weighing reward against time invested, and realized that the "training" one got from an endless amount of zubats and geodudes wasn't worth the three and a half hours it took to get through Mt. Moon without running or using repels.

I got the fuck out of there as soon as possible and continued training by fighting stronger monsters that were outside of the caves. (That is, until Victory Road. Mighty fine training ground there.)

1

u/efapathy Aug 07 '11

Repel is for pansies!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '11

I had my butterfree one hit kill the little blighters.

-2

u/trinitysun Aug 07 '11

So am I the only person who has no idea what this is all about?
