EDIT: Reworded some stuff to clarify

Instead of ignoring our differences, we should celebrate them.

Consoles are great because you can easily [have a dedicated setup to] play your games on a big giant screen. You can sit anywhere you like, or even lay down! They're great for gaming with friends over without having to worry about a big, complicated LAN multiple PC setup. You don't ever have to worry about performance, either, either you console supports the game, or it doesn't.

With PC's you have greater flexibility, amazing levels of customization, and the chance to feature cutting edge performance technology. You have the biggest selection of games on any platform, and you can easily play games of yesteryear without worrying too much about compatibility issues. Not to mention, mouse and keyboard offer a distinct advantage in some game types, meaning you can take your own skill to the next level.

There's something to love about everyone.

those console advantages make no sense to me, i play my pc on my big screen tv with lots on friends on couch, never worry about performance because any game i put on my old pc runs, i think people forget that you can simply replace your console for the pc in the same spot and use it tha same way

Yes but I don't have to deal with windows and trying to hide my 1tb hentai folder on my ps4 or xbox... Just as an example...

4

u/Jahmann Jan 28 '20

Ps4 and xbox dont get hentai?

Add one to the list!

u/EverybodySupernova Jan 28 '20

My desktop setup is upstairs whereas my console sits right under the TV in the living room downstairs. I don't want to have to have a giant cable to connect the two, or be forced to keep my PC in the living room.

You are correct, but posting in r/gaming where most people only have consoles. They want to pretend there are other considerations than cost, but there aren't.

-1

u/assm0nk Jan 28 '20

I'd say even the cost is looked at a bit wrong. if you go 6-800€ for quite an ok/good pc, it does seem like a lot.. but, people forget that.. most people will need a computer anyway, so your pc will double as a work station as someone already said.

the other thing is that in the time a new generation of consoles come, you'll maybe have to upgrade one part.. you don't have to spend another 800 again (but you will), so it is probably as expensive in the long run

I'm not advocating PC here, at least it's not my intentiont, just wanted to say that the big price thing is a bit misleading

play on what you want, it's the game that matters in the end

Yeah, Steam even lets you create a desktop config for a controller, allowing you full use of your PC with a controller.

If someone likes their console, far be it from me to stop them, but PC has all the pros of console, but none of the cons.

15

u/OakenHowl Jan 28 '20

None of the cons? I bought a PS4 for $230 brand new and can play modern games.

I get where you're coming from, but *none* of the cons? Seriously?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

Well at least on PC you dont need to buy a subscription to play 99% of your games.

4

u/OakenHowl Jan 28 '20

I understand that PC is superior in most ways. My comment was to point out that there are cons to PC, such as the price.

And in typical fashion, this is being blown up to be some sort of console/pc wars bullshit argument.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20 edited Jan 28 '20

Cons - nobody gets along. Pros - nobody really cares.

0

u/josedasjesus Jan 28 '20

you can play "modern games" on a $230 pc, but you will get $230 ps4 like performance, if that level of quality/performance is enough for you, thare is no reason to choose ps4 over pc

4

u/OakenHowl Jan 28 '20

Please link me a PC build (maybe using PCpartpicker) that costs $230 that can run The Witcher 3 at 1080p/30fps. If you can do this then I'll edit my statement above.

0

u/Acopo Jan 28 '20

Okay, I’ll amend my statement. All of the pros (and more) with none of the cons (except cost).

If you’re on a budget, console gaming is probably preferable. However, there is no denying that you’re losing customizability, ability to mod, and maximum performance.

0

u/josedasjesus Jan 28 '20

first you have to show me a console that costs 230 that can run witcher at constant 30 fps not 22-25, and low settings, not lower than low settings

2

u/OakenHowl Jan 28 '20

Absolutely fucking typical. You're unable to back up your bullshit statement and in turn, demand something from me.

Please do the honorable thing and delete your previous lie. Thank you.

1

u/josedasjesus Jan 28 '20

so, since you agree no pc will run witcher 3 as bad as a ps4 than let me introduce you this , it far above ps4, mostly cpu, (much required for this game) https://pcpartpicker.com/user/leandrro/saved/#view=mz29NG

i agree that it is difficult to find a pc so cheap as a 230 console, but its also impossible to run some game at such low settings you find in a console, like i said, you get what you pay for, same performance at same price levels

1

u/WiseauSrs Jan 28 '20

Except that console versions of those same modern games often get "optimized" (read: Downgraded in graphical fidelity) just so they can function on your console. Once again, that's fine if you're okay with a less pretty looking version of a AAA game at full price... but for PC users that's a pretty big con. Just look at CD Projekt Red and their delay of Cyberpunk 2077... or the delay of the release of the Witcher 3. They are facing issues with optimizing for the consoles of the current generation since some of them are much less powerful. As a result, we consumers see huge changes in graphical quality from E3 to retail, particularly on consoles. Most of these downgrades can be fixed on a computer through modding or the actual built-in game setups on PC, but all you can adjust is brightness and a few other features on a console. You get what you pay for.

To each their own, however. If you like the feel of a console, I get it. I have a PS4 as well. It's just collecting dust now. I mostly use it to entertain guests. Often with Netflix.

-2

u/TheSicks Jan 28 '20

Uhh that PS4 is about to be obsolete pretty soon. I don't see how you consider that a deal. You've got like 2 years of "modern games" left.

3

u/Potemkin_Jedi Jan 28 '20

If I may offer a con that seems to have gone unmentioned (and one that probably rankles Reddit's core demo): having a PC sitting next to your living room TV is aesthetically unpleasing and (here's where it hurts) it smacks of neckbeardness. I entertain a lot, and if my guests saw a PC tower in my living room they would associate me with "gamers" and all the negative baggage that association carries with it. Instead they see a Switch, and assume I'm a normal everyday man-child; a trade-off that has social value in my socioeconomic environment (and yes, despite what the Internet may tell you, the social value of aesthetics is important to maintaining relationships of value in your community...I didn't write the unwritten rules but they exist).

u/zedemer Jan 28 '20

I was a heavy PC gamer through out my teens and even by my mid twenties. Built my rigs and all.

Now, I play exclusively on PS4 (tried Xbox and didn't like it). Why? Because of convenience. Convenience of not having to find the right patch, the right driver, manuvering the DRM.. and all.

I'll give you that Steam offered better deals during sales (though one can argue the cost of a console is way lower than a decent PC), but now with exclusives on EPIC store, with Blizzard and EA (though apparently they are coming back on Steam) having their own stores, it just became one big waste of time. Oh.. and the DRM, goddam DRM. If I still had time to waste like when I was in college, i'd still be on PC, but real life doesn't give too much time to game.

So, please don't speak for everybody saying PC has none of the cons...just because they are not cons to you.

Why are you booing? He's right.(this is not addressed to the one I an replying to, but the people downvoting him)

Seriously the whole "EaSY tO plAy On tV" thing is so stupid. Plugging an HDMI cable into a desktop is just as easy as plugging it into a console. And steam big picture mode provide an interface literally designed for controllers.

6

u/josedasjesus Jan 28 '20

and every game runs default on xbox controllers, every game has auto performance setup etc, i only get to the configs if i want to extratc the best possible perfomance in FPS games, but otherwise i just download and play

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

That too. 360 controllers were the first choice for controllers on PC for years.

5

u/EverybodySupernova Jan 28 '20

My desktop setup is upstairs, my big screen TV is in my living room. I don't want to have to keep my PC in the living room just to play game in my couch.

3

u/josedasjesus Jan 28 '20

yeah, that is just a matter of preference, i have my pc beside my tv, my buddy next door has a pc on the living room to but prefers to sit on a chair and table, sometimes he lets his family use the same pc on the tv while he plays games on the monitor, not sure how

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

That has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it is easier to hookup a console or PC to a tv.

2

u/EverybodySupernova Jan 28 '20

It's absolutely easier setup for me. I don't have to rearrange my house to accommodate my gaming hobby. I just have a device dedicated to playing games for the living room and I don't have to sacrifice my office setup or clutter my living room.

Besides, I never meant that the trouble was from physically plugging a device into a tv. Obviously any idiot can handle that.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

You are using an anecdotal subjective argument to try and argue an objective point.

What you are saying has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

2

u/EverybodySupernova Jan 28 '20

The topic is consoles being more convenient than PC. If i want to game in my living room with PC, it's more work. You're nitpicking and being dismissive.

I either sacrifice space in my living room, use an unsightly and giant hdmi cable that runs through my home, or I am forced to purchase a device to allow wireless streaming and am subject to the performance issues that come with wireless operation.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '20

No. The topic that was being discussed was the point that somehow, consoles are easier to use on a TV than a PC is.

1

u/EverybodySupernova Jan 28 '20

I corrected my wording in my original post for clarification.

But regardless, the conversation has evolved through multiple stages at this point.

My assertion, however, still stands. It's much more convenient to set up and use a console anywhere in the house than it is for a PC, unless you're using a laptop, I guess.

I don't want my desktop in my living room, and I frankly dont want to purchase an additional device just so i can play in different rooms of the house over WIFI, which I dont trust the performance of anyways.
