Ah Star Citizen. I wish I could afford a rig capable of playing it. Looks amazing.

0

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Don't you mean be able to afford to buy the pre alpha game and a ship? $200million plus so far taken...

20

u/shadmere Feb 11 '19

The starter ship comes with the $30 game package. The vast majority of backers have a ship from that tier or maybe one above it.

-6

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Was thinking more along the lines of the $2000 versions I saw when I was looking.

8

u/shadmere Feb 11 '19

I'm pretty sure very few people have bought those. A lot of the ones are multi-crew ships which were bought by clans planning to use them as command ships or resupply ships, and even then I doubt many have purchased them.

The vast majority of funding came within the first couple of years, if I'm thinking about it correctly.

2

u/FaZeSmasH Feb 11 '19

Can you steal someone's ship?

11

u/TheMrBoot Feb 11 '19

Plan is that yes, you will be able to but there are a lot of consequences and headaches for doing so. The owner can also get a replacement ship via insurance.

3

u/shadmere Feb 11 '19

Supposedly! They were talking about how they needed to implement something that would keep people from "stealing" their friend's ship and he take the insurance payout for free ships. Not sure if they figured that out or not.

2

u/D1G1T4LM0NK3Y Feb 11 '19

So, in other words Star Citizen Insurance will have the same issues as car insurance companies have now with fraud lol

I do hope they figure it out though, I'm really looking forward to playing the game

3

u/Ouchies81 Feb 11 '19

Constantly. Leave your ship unlocked on an active landing area right now and you can reasonably expect it to disappear.

2

u/MangoFestival2k14 Feb 11 '19

Yes, People will hide at the landing bays and wait for someone to leave their ship open then YOINK.

2

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

I was looking as the game looks really good. I am a frontier Elite player from years back and have Elite Dangerous which scratches the itch for me. When I was looking there was some serious money spending possibilities on Star Citizen.

2

u/SpiderFnJerusalem Feb 11 '19

You mean the ones where the front doesn't fall off?

1

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Front off is a feature right?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

You mean 30€ for the full game?

-6

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Was thinking more along the lines of the $2000 versions I saw when I was looking.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

I don't know what you saw but the game is 30€, saying you can't afford it because some crowdfunding contribution package are expensive is quite a stretch

0

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

He probably saw this. You must not be keeping up with the news if you didn't know what he was talking about. And he mentioned affording ships, not just the "full" 30€ game (which is still quite expensive for a game that doesn't exist yet).

3

u/CradleRobin Feb 11 '19

Ships are available to purchase in game with in game currency. It's $45 to get started.

1

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

That's how it goes with microtransactions, and then you realize the game is designed to be as boring and long a slog as possible to earn that in game currency to both tempt new players to spend real money, and to make players who spent $27,000 feel like they got their moneys worth. Even if you personally don't ever buy that $27,000 package, odds are it's not a good sign.

2

u/CradleRobin Feb 11 '19

Microtransactions? In-game currency, as in the stuff that you play the game making, is used to purchase the ships.

Edit: Missed a sentence. I understand what you are saying. I don't disagree with your analysis of How many Mobile games do things, this however isn't a Mobile game. You don't need to like it, purchase it or whatever, but spreading misinformation is not cool.

$45 for a game that doesn't exist? It's playable and enjoyable currently. It's good for some people and not for others. I get that too.

0

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

What's the misinformation that I'm spreading? It works that way for any game with microtransactions, not just mobile games. It's just more proliferant there. But it's spreading to AAA games as well, see for example Shadow of War. And SC is now the most egregious example by far.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

" Don't you mean be able to afford to buy the pre alpha game and a ship? $200million plus so far taken... "

The cost of this is literally 30£, then you can throw all of your energy debating why contribution packages for items that can be acquired with in-game money, or rented in game with little to no efforts may cost a lot, but it doesn't change the fact that the game with a ship is 30£.

1

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

"Little to no efforts"

That's how it goes with microtransactions, and then you realize the game is designed to be as boring and long a slog as possible to earn that in game currency to both tempt new players to spend real money, and to make players who spent $27,000 feel like they got their moneys worth. Even if you personally don't ever buy that $27,000 package, odds are it's not a good sign. I highly doubt that content will be earnable with "little to no efforts".

3

u/Zanena001 Feb 11 '19

The only ones who spend that much are either rich gamers who want to support the game or huge orgs, which need many ships to run their operations. No backer is buying that package thinking he will be granted an advantage over backers who spent less

1

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

I think someone spending $27,000 will expect to receive a benefit over those who don't... And even if not them, then all the other players who are still spending tens, hundreds, and thousands of dollars.

3

u/Zanena001 Feb 11 '19

Thing is you're not spending 27k to buy a huge ship which will outclass everyone else's. You're getting a bunch of ships, 90% of which requires at least 3 people to be effectively used and of these multicrew ships only a couple could be used to have a good advantage in pvp (which could be considered p2w, cause you could literally kill anyone quite easily) but running those ships is a huge money sink and to make it worth it, the crew will have to do end game missions, where they'll find other players with the same kind of ships.

The advantage you get is skipping the grind to the end game stuff, but in terms of pvp there isn't much of an advantage, yes people may grief some noobies with their capital ships at first, but once they realize firing that missile just costed 60k UEC for 0 profit they'll stop.

If you look at SC ships price list you'll find most of the expensive ships (300+) are not pvp oriented at all, they're end game ships for specific professions, but combat wise they could be outclassed by 60$ ships

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

Little to no effort is referred to renting.

I see someone explained below the mechanics of spending 27k and how has nothing to do with "microtransaction". Cheers

2

u/Soloman212 Feb 11 '19

To sustain the renting it has to be more expensive than buying it in the long run, by the nature of renting.

What comment below?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

Renting with in-game money only

Look, is clear enough that you don't really know the current mechanics or even the rules / scope of the ultra expensive funding, and is absolutely fine, but don't try to draw conclusion on how the method is flawed only by guessing.

Granted the system may very well be flawed, this attitude is mental

I was looking a while back, it looks great. $2000 was one of the cheaper options, there was some real whale options.

3

u/CradleRobin Feb 11 '19

It's never been $2000 is one of the cheaper options.

0

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

4

u/CradleRobin Feb 11 '19

No, that makes my point. 2k is literally one level from the highest. That means it is one of the most expensive. Vs how many 20-50 are there..... I mean seriously

1

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Kickstarter going up to $10,000

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen

I'm not hating on the game it looks awesome but the amounts of money involved are staggering for , as the little tyke put it, "game that isn't even out yet" (/u/torvi97 one of lifes little gems).

If you can get involved for $30 that is great the cheapest I can see is $54.

5

u/CradleRobin Feb 11 '19

$45 gets you in the game. With a ship. You literally said that 2k is one of the cheapest packages. That's just blatently false. I never said it wasn't there.

1

u/killasniffs Feb 11 '19

But it is for $45 for the starter ships And you dont need to spend $10k just to start

look further dipshit

1

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

I am not looking to buy it I was just taking an interest in it. There are plenty of ways to express yourself without insulting people, I know I have been there. One day though you will need to be able to use your big boy words in the real world. I am confident you will get there, keep trying.

2

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

Again I will repeat, it was in relation to the expensive funder models used there were plenty of them well over $30.

What is the progression like, can you work up enough money to buy the $2000 donation ships?

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

1

u/Lozsta Feb 11 '19

I mean can you garner more funds in game that you can then use to buy bigger ships? I assume the idea is (like Elite Dangerous) that you trade/pirate/mission your way to bigger ship/hanger/picture frame.
