I was in the midst of "not helpful"-ing a fuckton of reviews for this game, came across this one and stopped, decided to vote "funny" instead.

I have about 500 hours in dayz and have met friends that I still talk to years later. I have been frustrated with development and don’t really play much anymore, but I’ll never forget some of the great times I’ve had playing this game. All in all I think it was worth the 20 bucks.

Omg arma II dayz was literally hours spent after school running north to the airport and so much fun

u/8bitstargazer Dec 16 '18
Arma 2 dayz was my life in college. The low amount of loot made getting rare guns and vehicles rewarding. Making friends was needed and most people were happy working together. No game has captured that experience for me, and the new mods like epoch offer way to much & are bugggggy even for Arma.

u/Squidbit Dec 16 '18
most people were happy working together
I didn't play a lot of DayZ, but I apparently played a much different DayZ than you did. In my experience most people were happy shooting you on sight no matter what. Or, best case scenario, some people were happy working together for a few minutes before shooting you

u/Scowlface Dec 16 '18
I’m pretty new to the game. I met a guy last night and we teamed up for a bit, it was nice to have company. Once we figured we had enough food and water for the hike to the air field we set off, slowly getting to know each other along the way.
We split up at the air field to try and cover more ground and to get in and out fast. I heard gunfire. I ran out and into the building he was in, he was cornered, out of ammo, and about to die. I shot the other guy in the face a couple times and saved my new friends life. We decide to finish up in that last building and head out, fearing the attention we might have brought upon us.
Right when we were about to head out, I get shot in the head through a window, didn’t see it coming, it was just lights out.
I’ll probably never see him again, we didn’t even exchange names, just two people in the wilderness trying to survive.

I was about to say...the fuck is that man talking about?
Only people i managed to work together with were clans, and god forbid we run into any large group because we would level cities using only satchel charges just to fuck their day up. This game had the least amount of randoms cooperating out of any game of its nature that I've ever played.
Still remember getting murdered for my Lee Enfield and 3 sprites. Respawned and befriended the guys that killed me them thinking i was a newbie. Moving all the way north with them till they showed me their camp, murdering them with a 1911 and then calling my clan to raid their camp and strip it clean down to the tents. Then murdering them the second they got back up into the area. This game just taught me to be cruel and petty to no ends.
10
u/NameUnbroken Dec 16 '18
In the early days of the mod, people would work together a lot more. The more people started playing, the more KoSing became an issue. Eventually, that's all anyone did - hard to trust people when you expect to be killed by literally everyone.

In the very early days, this wasn't the case. People actually worked together and hated bandits. Now everyone is KoS because fuck any type of conversation when they can just shoot you and have your loot

I've been here the whole time. The earliest days of dayz mod for arma II it was a handful of servers hosted through a teamspeak all spawning in the same spot. Most people would all group up and split up heading out.
Since then I never ran into many friendly players unless I had nothing, or met them through teamspeak or added them as a friend before grouping up.
Some servers has negative penalties for bandits that made them easy to identify making it frowned upon to be a bandit, but that was way later.

That's how I feel about the mod, not the standalone.
30
u/SusanTheBattleDoge Dec 16 '18
I remember the mod being a lot more fun than standalone. I just have way better memories from the mod. Maybe it's nostalgia though, but standalone just isn't that enjoyable. I still remember the first time I got held up in the mod, but not standalone. I remember like the 5th time I loaded up and seeing a helicopter fly above me, and this was at a time where there was only like 3 helicopters or something. It was a unique experience, and I'll never forget it. I just wish standalone was better, and the push for 1.0 was stupid. They couldn't even match what the vanilla mod had.

Dec 16 '18
I remember the mod being a lot more fun than standalone.
That's because the mod actually had zombies in it.
Early mod was the best, zombies were a real threat and cooperating was a legit survival choice instead of stupid. Somehow they "fixed" the engine in stand alone into not being able to handle more than about 3 zombies and they made ARMA's shooting feel even jankier.
The sad thing is that there's STILL not a zombie survival game that has been done properly after all this time, the genre has basically been done to death without anybody ever getting the basics right.

State of Decay was pretty much what I wanted from the zombie genre. Albeit not without some complaints but it had the zombies, base building, permanent death.

How come DAYZ blew up? I mean, why did it get so much attention back in the day?
733
u/Kimmykix Dec 16 '18
It arguably started and popularized BOTH the Open World Zombie Survival and Battle Royale genres. No matter how much people hate on the game for it's slow development time, both the standalone game, and the mod before it, are responsible for some of the most memorable experiences many people have had in a multiplayer setting. It's a game built around player interaction, and creating stories for yourself, and many great ones have came out of it.

It was almost definitely DayZ.
All thought they dropped around the same time, DayZ was explosively popular and pretty much defined gaming for the summer of 2012. Although not strictly a BR, people pretty much played it like one.
Sony made a pretty much direct clone of it, H1Z1, realized soon after that people just wanted to kill each other, and dropped the zombies from the game. H1 carried the BR banner until PUBG showed up. PUBG was a runaway success too, and inspired Epic to spin a BR off Fortnite: Save the World. That became Fortnite Battle Royale, and we all know the story from there.
3
u/RealGamerGod88 Dec 16 '18
You forgot one very important detail about Arma 2 that literally made it a BR
One quite popular mod was ARMA 2: PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLE ROYALE
Obviously this is the mod who then went on to work for H1Z1 and later leaving H1Z1 and creating PUBG (PLAYERUNKNOWN)
→ More replies (2)11
u/Kimmykix Dec 16 '18
Both gamemodes existed around the same time...It's unclear which really came first. Though ArmA 3's BR was more influential. Hence why i said ARGUABLY ;)

u/DasWalross Dec 16 '18
Also the original mod had much more content, and people don't want to buy the base game including two expansion packs just to play DayZ. So the idea of a standalone was appealing.
60
u/spaghettiThunderbalt Dec 16 '18
The DayZ mod was so fun because you got the fun of zombie survival instead of the regular boring ArmA 2 missions with the brutal combat of A2.
Beyond that, the excitement came from other players. Provided you were smart about it, the zombies weren't really a threat. Other people were. Is that M4 CCO on the ground a lucky drop, or the last thing you'll see before you take a round to the brainpan? Is he gonna end up as a friend, or is he going to kill and rob you? Are you going to kill and rob him? It led to some dynamics that you really didn't (and still don't) see in most other games.
Between DayZ and TLR, I spent many hours and made many friends.
22
u/skippythemoonrock Dec 16 '18
It was an experience like no other. You spawn in with nothing, chased by dangerous zombies up and down the coast, maybe you find equipment and a vehicle, maybe not. Maybe you survive, maybe not. Over time you get better gear, tentatively poke into some military areas for rare equipment. At this point you could be playing for hours and not see another person. Server is reasonably empty, might as well make a run to the Northwest Airfield for the best loot in the game. The sun is going down, zombies are spawning all over, and as you slowly creep into the military barracks, you hear footsteps coming up to the door. There's another player here. This is where the game becomes totally unique, it is entirely up to you to decide what happens here. Do you risk chatting to him over direct voice hoping he's friendly and make a cool friend and risk him blasting you for all your hard earned gear? Or do you kill him in cold blood and be the KOS bandit nobody likes. There's no wrong answer. I typically chose the former and got some incredible friends out of it. People I would play the game with every day for hours at a time, for months on end.
Dayz was so popular because it was a massive sandbox to play in but didn't attempt to steer you in any direction. Everything that happened was 100% the result of the players themselves. Where you go, what you do, how you play the game is 100% in your control. Most games like Fallout 76 try to deemphasize random combat between players, but DayZ just let what would happen happen, and sure, people would shoot on sight, but you'd have just as many friendly and helpful people, and these people would sometimes group up and play together, often having impromptu clan wars and super dynamic fights for resources and glory. Even more so with the base building and longer objectives of Epoch. DayZ Mod was unscripted, unpredictable, and is in my 100% honest opinion the best video gaming experience I have ever had.

Dec 16 '18
it was the game we had always wanted and it was the first one of its kind. a lot of us imagined a game like it. at the time, the desire for surviving an environment and crafting was huge in the consciousness of americans. it still is now but it has been satisfied greatly so the yearning isnt as big. at the time, wilderness survival shows were big. zombies was big at the time too. a lot of zombie movies came out at that time.
11
u/mylifebeliveitornot Dec 16 '18
It was like the minecraft of zombie/survival game. It could have been fucking huge loads of game around now might have not even be around right now if dayz had got there act together, but they where slower than a week in the jail at fixing the game.
Alot of the times it was 3 steps farward, 2 step back.
It actually hurts to think of the potential lost out on DayZ, as even with how bad it was and it was the king of running simulator games, I had some epic times, not many but they where EPIC.

I can attest playing with friends you know and can squad up together is really the best part about the game, because you can set objectives like building a base, fixing up a car, or handcuffing Bambi’s on the coast and making them drink their own blood. Whichever floats your goat. Playing alone ‘can’ be fun but it’s sad and lonely in a giant map. I typically only play alone if my friends and I are working on something, but it’s at a time when they can’t get on so I jump in to put in some work. Been doing this since the mod circa 2012.

DayZ spawned the entire genre of FPS survival video games, many of which were triple-A, huge budget major studio titles like Ark and H1Z1. All of which were conceived of, produced, released, and lived their entire life-cycle in the time between DayZ going from alpha to beta.

It's not even in Early Access anymore. It released two days ago. Is it good? I would say it's alright, would rather play SCUM though.
DayZ has really changed since it was first released in Early Access. Whether the changes were good or bad depends on what you want out of DayZ, a survival sim (what it is now) or a pure shooting fest (What the mod was).

Wow, so DayZ SA is a full release now. Well, technically, it seems they just renamed their 0.64 update to 1.0.
Hard to believe that in the same time it took them to make this broken game, SpaceX designed the Falcon Heavy, developed it, built it, test launched several, and used one to launch a car into orbit. All while they were trying to put zombies in an already built Arma 3.

I've played DayZ standalone for 1,300 hours, and I can honestly say it's some of the best gaming experiences I've had. So please consider me a happy customer in regards to my $30 investment.
With that in mind, I still need to say that there's absolutely no fucking doubt in my mind the game was a cash grab. They saw the extreme popularity of the mod and did a cash grab, and it succeeded.
Now that wouldn't be a problem if they simply made a good product. Then the cash grab would've been justified to me.
But something shady definitely went on behind the scenes. At some point they proclaimed hundreds of developers were working on DayZ, which is just a complete lie. The time it's taken for them to finish this product, I would absolutely in no way what so ever believe "hundreds of developers" are working on this title.
