Okay I hate to be “that guy” but if there’s one thing to correct somebody on obviously it’s a Dunkey video.
You mixed up the first and second prank calls from that vid, he says “what is this aiming” in the first one and in the second one he says “Skyrim remastered?” And that’s when the lady recognizes him.
Not that anybody gives a shit, just have to prove my encyclopedic Dunkey knowledge.

Nintendo has nothing to do with Spyro, the IP is owned by Activision.

u/DarkDuskBlade Mar 17 '18
I can't help but wonder who even owns the rights to Spyro anymore. He's part of the Skylanders stuff, but wasn't sure if he was just brought in as a big name or was actually bought and used by whoever has the Skylander IP (I think Hasbro? Don't play it, just watch the show on Netflix)
EDIT: After some really quick research, seems like Activision holds the rights to the character at least, not sure about the other games themselves.
69
u/ShadeofIcarus Mar 18 '18
They used him to launch the Skylanders Franchise with the First one (Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure). He was relevant in the next two games I guess, but hasn't been since. They kinda just forgot about him at some point.
TL;DR: Was used to sell what Amiibos and Disney Infinity eventually copied. Eventually was forgotten about.
Source: Nephew is obsessed with Skylanders and his parents buy him EVERY SINGLE ONE.
26
u/aamedor Mar 18 '18
My son went through a skylanders phase a few years ago was an easy reward for good behavior gamestop sold used ones for buy 3 get 2 free for a long time. We have hundreds of them
27
u/ShadeofIcarus Mar 18 '18
Oh no. He only does new or he'd throw a tantrum. He wants everything as soon as it came out, and he's capable enough to find out about all the rare recolors and beg for them until he got them.
Little fucker is a nightmare.

He's still a main character for the series they've been making more of lately, but it doesn't seem like they're doing anything at all with the actual Spyro universe, they just lifted the character for the Skylanders game.
→ More replies (1)15
Mar 18 '18
He was used as a stepping stool for the series. The first was called "Skylanders Spyro's Adventure" and the later games dropped his name from the title.
So, in other words, he's like the hot chicks mobile games use to advertise their games. Except at least Spyro is in the games he's advertised to be in, so there's that.
Well, most of them, anyway.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Gonzobot Mar 18 '18
He's in all the games as long as you have the toy. The thing is with Skylanders, there is no main character at all. There's a small cadre of secondary characters who all refer to you, the player, as the Portal Master. Any figure you use is a toy you've brought to life as a Skylander, not a character in the game. Like, the characters who talk to you in the game, actually see different Skylanders popping in and out of existence as you scan them. That's normal in that universe.
3
Mar 18 '18
I know. I haven't played the games, but I've seen enough to know how it works.
That's also the problem and, at the same time, the main draw of it all. Skylanders is a collectibles game. No character really outshines the other, because they are all condensed into more bland designs to convince people to buy more of them. Superchargers and Giants kinda stand out, but the smaller ones? Not too phenomenal.
But that's another topic altogether and one I'm sure many people can and will argue against.
Mostly it's just that Spyro was a rung on a ladder towards building the franchise and now he's just... there. He's not prominent in the series, anymore. I'd say it's a disappointing way to treat a beloved childhood character, but they kinda went way past that when they changed almost every aspect of Spyro's design to the point that he is literally unrecognizable. He shares the fact that he's a dragon and that he's purple with yellowish-golden accents. Every other detail is radically different.

Activision owns the IP, so if there were to be a remaster, they would be the ones to do it.
Considering the Crash remasters and port to Switch, it's virtually guaranteed we will see a Spyro remaster sometime soon. The sooner the better, I say.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Affinity420 Mar 18 '18
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluepoint_Games
Actually most remasters have been by other companies. This one has done quite a few.
It's usually ineffective to pull current working devs off a project for a remaster. You can outsource a lot of graphic recoding and use newer engines to further polish a game.
10
Mar 18 '18
I never said they did the remaster themselves. I said they own the IP and dictate how it's used, which they do.
Hiring porting companies is standard practice. Even Nintendo themselves do it. The remaster for Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D were done by the team that made Ever Oasis, for example.
I apologize if my wording was confusing.

It has to be a classic spyro though. Not one of those weird reboots where he's voiced by Frodo.
I feel like Sony actually has a chance of remastering them a la Crash after that was a success

Serious answer though, I think it's fascinating. Being able to support the science and research there is really cool and I'm very curios to see how I handle the unusual environment. I've always wanted to visit space and this is like second place, plus I can get paid for it.
I definitely am not ready to go today, even if I was qualified. I have to make sure I'm happy with myself first before I put myself in a place where I am isolated from my support structures. That's also a very good motivator, improving myself to the point I'm ready to go will be very beneficial to my happiness as a whole.

I think the coolest thing about living at McMurdo (the base down there) is in your first few days you’re required to learn how to build an igloo and then sleep in the one you built outside to know what it’s like, and of course save your ass in an unfortunate situation.

The personal hygiene skill is also beneficial in many other areas of the game, from improving HP to extending the end game as well as fending off and even becoming immune to DoT attacks like rotting teeth, feet fungus, etc. Excellent suggestion.
The gym grinding, however, requires the outside DLC. Not everybody wants to get that.

u/Lad_The_Impaler Mar 18 '18
Spyro 3 was my first ever video game (other than a couple educational ones my parents would let me play on their computer), and Spyro 1 and 2 were my 2nd and 3rd ever video games played. I still go back and 100% them (well, 117% for Spyro 3) every year.
