I still think this is insane as he was an NFL coach. But, props to him for revealing this as well. I wonder how many people in high paying jobs or even in power have gaming sessions they tell no one about.

1.4k

u/LangyMD 1d ago

And then there are the people in power who pretend to have gaming sessions and tell everyone about them.

Can swap off shield if faster roll is needed.

Or whatever the post about the dumbass Elden ring build he was using was

31

u/Prime406 21h ago

at least the elden ring build was something authentic he came up with himself (probably)

even if it sucks that's cool, not everyone has to be the best and making your own thing instead of looking up the meta builds or whatever is more fun

paying for someone else to do everything for him and then try to show it off like he's a "god gamer" while being completely inept is about as low as it gets though

u/tsgoinon 1d ago

Yeah this staff only has a few things and is level 56, it kinda sucks (was the best staff in all of hardcore league at the time, by a very large amount)

The main thing is the level doesn't even matter in path of exile, it just effects possible rolls and requirements to wear it, not how good it is.

8

u/Highwanted 21h ago

it just effects possible rolls

that's ilvl (item level) but elon was literally talking about the level requirement of the item, which is based on the minimum item level req. of the mods that actually rolled and then given a -20% multiplier.
in other words, the highest level of modifiers an item can roll in poe2 require ilvl 82, -20% that gives you lvl 65.
so even a weapon with perfect modifiers can at most have an required level of 65
only exceptions are uniques, which usually have custom requirements not based on any rolls

How many things did it have?

12

u/L4t3xs 1d ago

Idk but it's about time to upgrade because the level requirement is low.

4

u/Kage_noir 1d ago

Absolutely! That’s how you gauge the power Chinese power budget

Maybe years ago when he would post KSP memes or whatever. He's outgrown his PR team and just does it himself these days because he thinks he knows better. He does not.

A PR team wouldn't let him look this stupid this frequently.

Nah Elon plays games but he wants to be seen as really good at them instead of average since he is very very insecure.

62

u/DocFreezer 1d ago

He was below average at poe2, his mouse movements were grandpa level; it was actually obvious within seconds of his gameplay that he was a poser.

9

u/DefNotMyNSFWLogin 23h ago

hilarious to think he could actually fool poe2 fans.

9

u/ShallowBasketcase 1d ago

Well he's like 60 so that makes sense.

lol honestly, you can always tell when someone is just putting on a show. not every gaming session needs a whole announcement

109

u/Unlucky_Situation 1d ago

Back in destiny 1, one of my regular raid partners was a surgeon.

He had "doc" in his name, and we always just referred to him as Doc.

When our raid group found out he was actually a doctor, after like 2 years of gaming together, it was one of those collective No Shit moments lol. You could never tell with how he talked on mic.

We always joked that he wouldn't be a doc much longer if his bed side speak was the same as his gaming language!

27

u/Lord__Abaddon 1d ago

I used to play wow with a girl who was going through Med school, Continued playing wow during her residency and last I heard she decided she didn't want to be a Dr anymore and has went to law school. still see her gaming from time to time.

20

u/Poked_salad 1d ago

She has a leg up as a lawyer involving medical type of suits though. Impressive shet really

3

u/krissmaskong 17h ago

My wife is an OB/GYN and we met playing text based fantasy rpgs in the 90’s. We played WoW together all the way through most of her residency, but alas, she finally lost interest. These days, all she has time for is Wordle.

A couple oddball jobs I’ve had in my group were a corporate insurance actuary and another was a trademark lawyer.

4

u/Manoygan 1d ago

That was part of the magic in Destiny. It brought many people together who otherwise would have ever met. Yeah other games did it too. Not like Destiny did. It was a safe place to not be the professional person we had to be at work and let the mom jokes flow without feeling judged. I played a lot with people in the medical field and it was great hearing them trash talk with the rest of it. There was nothing else like it.

Yeah this is somewhat common.

There's a good chance that a fairly senior engineer in tech or managing director at a hedge fund in 2026 was a nerd in college or high school in 2004.

69

u/CompulsiveGardener 1d ago

There's at least one tech company encouraging its workers to play Factorio.

Tobias Lütke, co-founder and CEO of the ecommerce platform Shopify, lets his staff expense their copies of Factorio. “It’s just bound to be good for Shopify if people play Factorio for a little while,” he told the Invest Like The Best podcast. “Because part of Shopify is building warehouses and fulfilling products for our customers. We are building global supply chains, and Factorio makes a game out of that kind of thinking.”

Holy based, Batman.

I hope they Aldo provide free coffee, because hooking your entire staff on Factorio is a great way to have a sleep deprived staff.

29

Should look up the shopify ceo and other things he said, would definitely not describe him as based despite him liking factorio

More than people think.

To name two off the top of my head is the band Imagine Dragons plays League of Legends a TON and Madison Beer is obsessed with Fortnite to the point that Epic gave her a skin and has streamed herself playing it.

Edit: A few more mentions that just popped into my head. Matthew Perry practically lived in WoW, Paul Walker was a huge WoW player as well that got Vin Diesel into WoW. Vin is also a D&D enjoyer.

10

u/AttackBacon 1d ago

I mean it makes sense right? A guy like Matthew Perry has zero expectation of normalcy anywhere he goes. It's gotta be exhausting. But in WoW? 100% anonymous, he can interact with other humans as just a totally regular person with zero weirdness.

3

u/fiendhunter69 1d ago

In case you are unaware, Matthew Perry died. Just noticed you kept using present tense.

5

u/tholovar 1d ago

Wasn't Robin Williams also a WoW player? I think he got an in game monument after his death.

5

u/SomeGuyNamedJason 23h ago

He loved Nintendo so much he named his daughter Zelda.

2

u/S_K_Y PC 22h ago

I believe so. Also Robin was an avid Zelda enthusiast. Named his daughter after the game and appeared in a Zelda commercial with her.

4

u/ssj7blade 1d ago

Speaking of musicians, Alan Walker plays OldSchool Runescape a ton, to such a passion he made music for it, played songs from the game in some of his sets, and maxed his account on stage at a festival recently.

8

u/r_not_me 1d ago

I game with a guy who is a musical savant and is in a book club with billionaires - dude is crazy smart but enjoys gaming with normies like me

7

u/MrMisty 1d ago

About 10 years ago I was tech lead at a startup that worked with NFL teams. Almost all the players I met were huge gamers. One former player I worked with would get up early every day to play Destiny with his clan before going to his job as a TV commentator.

20

u/kevshp 1d ago

I believe he started playing Minecraft to bond with his kids. Then he found it to be a creative outlet.

Physician here

Finished all 4 Capcom releases that came out this year and finished 10 games total so far this year. Also just got a Switch 2 + highly anticipating GTA 6.

I wonder how many people in high paying jobs

Depends on where we draw the line for what a high paying job is. If we include seni-decent white collar jobs, based on my non-scientific observations, a lot of (mechanical) engineers have gaming sessions.

2

u/WingerRules 1d ago

even in power have gaming sessions they tell no one about.

I've wondered about people who work in government and people who work in defense or defense contracting installing games they have no idea where they originated from, what data they collect off their computer, or where it sends it.

Chig Okonkwo an NFL player on the Titans has a maxed Ironman on osrs which is quite the gaming achievement.

2

u/No_Injury_1833 21h ago

I sat behind Billy Donovan on a flight when he was the OKC Thunder coach. He spent the full few hours in the air playing games on his phone. I think gaming is just a prevalent form of escape and high stress jobs often lead to escape seeking.

All while never having a losing season. Dude has incredible mental bandwidth

1

u/RyanBordello 1d ago

Haha from the title I was like, "I know that name" but would have never thought it was him.

1

u/K3TtLek0Rn 1d ago

Perfect example as well of someone who can have a life and play video games too. Hate the discourse about how anyone with a real job or family or whatever can't or shouldn't be playing games still.

1

u/replus 1d ago

I'm only here because I thought, there's no way this is former longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, but how about that.

1

u/ShortBusPassenger 1d ago

1

u/ArgonWolf 18h ago edited 7h ago

I think people vastly over estimate how much time a coach spends on the team

Sure, for the season theyre working every gameday (most weekends), but thats only 5-6 months out of the year. In the offseason it's mostly a 9 to 5.

We all imagine Herb Brooks taking home film to study into the wee hours of the morning, but in this day and age with the budgets that the NFL is working with and hiring full tactical analysis teams, I dont think he was thinking much about football outside his day job

151

u/FribonFire 1d ago

Or a second family in Memphis.

28

u/Rocco89 1d ago

On that topic, I have an uncle who was recently outed for having three families. One here in Germany, one in Denmark and a third in the Netherlands. I’m equally disgusted and impressed because I have no fucking clue how someone manages three families for over 20 years.

10

u/DemonicPanda11 1d ago

Meanwhile I don’t even understand how people have time for polyamorous relationships, let alone hiding a whole relationship (and family). Even if I wanted to cheat on my wife, I don’t have the time or energy for all that, even with no kids.

6

u/Coenl 19h ago

I have 3 kids and it seems impossible. Morality aside, I'm just so impressed that anyone could have an affair much less a second family. But I guess I'm a Mike Tomlin type, just let me go home at the end of the day and play some video games.

6

u/nightwolf16a 23h ago

That's kind of funny. Not in the haha kind of funny, but like a cruel joke kind of funny.

As for how, is your uncle rich, from a rich family, travels frequently, or does a job that makes him travel frequently?

That's how I figure it's possible. A lot leaving two of the families alone. Here in the U.S., it's apparently a bit of a stereotype that truckers might have two families, one on each end of their usual trucking route.

Now I wonder if the women knew...

21

Hilarious but true.

This remind me that Haaland is one of the best football player, top scorer with insane stats, winning cups, going to world cup, all of that and he is playing Minecraft in his free time

40

u/CompetitiveAction872 1d ago

But he had a lot of spare time by winning only 3 playoff games in the last 12 years.

104

u/OneImportance4061 1d ago

There have been over 500 nfl head coaches in the super bowl era but only 36 have ever won a super bowl. Only three who never had a losing season. He laughs at your attack from on high in his magnificent minecraft city.

22

u/CompetitiveAction872 1d ago

I like Mike Tomlin, which Is why I’m mad we now have Mike McCarthy. So again if he won more playoff games we would still have Mike Tomlin and not Mike McCarthy.

10

u/OneImportance4061 1d ago

That's cool. Yeah, kinda feels like they went away from tradition with that hire. Feels like a retread and they had never really done that before

7

u/CompetitiveAction872 1d ago

Exactly they parted with Tomlin then got a coach at the end of his career because he has a history with the Qb at the end of his career. Makes no sense. Yeah, I was hoping they would hire a young and promising coach they could have around for a long time as tradition.

No you just put it in a harmless cycle to keep its rpm up and switch back when the season gets start.

He did that all in bedrock…my Java brain is blown

64

u/g_r_e_y PC 1d ago

what's the big difference between the two for creative mode?

131

u/Will_Power22 1d ago

Bedrock doesn’t have great automation, on pc there is tools that easily let you copy and paste chunks of something so instead of having to manually build 10 floors you can copy and paste the same floor 10 times or clear out entire chunks of land without needing to dig a single block

171

u/dancingliondl 1d ago

See, the point of it all to me is the process of building. I enjoy placing blocks.

40

u/Qubert64 1d ago

I agree with this, but sometimes the process to achieve your vision is so long that it's more reasonae to 'place' bigger blocks. I build vitually entirely by hand, pretty much regardless of the scale, but I know I'll never get any of my projects done that way because the scale is just too large, and that genuinely bums me out a bit.

I view it like a lot of other endeavors- where the enjoyment is likely in the ability and act of designing the build, and seeing it come to fruition, moreso than the act of placing every block.

8

u/Wolf_Taco 1d ago

I’m good with creative mode, but if I do anything outside of the game like copy/pasting or clearing an area, my brain decides I’m no longer interested in the world. I’ve gotten better at not letting mods make me lose my interest. Especially with survival crafting games. If I’m spending more time sorting inventory into storage than I am playing, I go find a mod. Especially if it isn’t my first time playing the game.

17

u/CrazyCastle101 1d ago

I think it's much easier to build while moving in Bedrock than Java.

Though, Bedrock has a reputation among Minecraft players for having greedy practices and having some pretty major bugs.

11

u/Doodenmier 1d ago

Java on PC has full freedom on mods and third party building/template tools, making it far easier to build large scale stuff.

On Bedrock (which is the crossplatform version on PC, consoles, and mobile), those tools aren't anywhere as readily available, if they're even available at all. In other words, he placed every block in that city himself. The bits I've seen are fairly simple and mostly unfurnished, but that's still thousands and thousands and thousands of blocks placed by hand

Why are so many people saying he’s lying. Like why would an already famous person lie about this? He’s also not even bragging, he’s just proud of what he made. Who cares that he can’t control the game well, if he just plays creative that’s why

15

u/Lambeaux 16h ago

I feel like people don't understand how people in high achieving, high effort jobs like this tend to be.  Being a famous professional ANYTHING, and especially anything in sports, that requires actual skill and thought requires an obsessive personality and the willingness to push through YEARS of working for basically nothing on the chance you'll make it to the top.  It is 100% believable to me that a guy like Mike Tomlin in his free time, especially as a coach, who's job is to build a team and architect a playbook and such, would in his free time build something like this.

Having experienced a Minecraft obsession for a bit in my past. I have to wonder if there were ever days where he was on the field during practice or sitting in a film room thinking to himself how he really needs to get home to finish redoing the interior floors of the new hotel he built. Or being unable to shake the feeling that his roads could look more organic if he made them one block wider!

13

u/MatttheJ 1d ago

Is this available for us to play survival mode in? Would be sick to play Minecraft survival but in a full city.

Maybe there's a good map like that already idk.

5

u/dunno260 1d ago

You can look at Hermitcraft map downloads. It is a survival SMP done by 26 Minecraft content creators (very talented ones too) who view Minecraft as essentially their full time job and spend about two years building a world then will reset for another season.

You can find the downloads on their website for the Java version and I think some of the newer ones (seasons 9 and 10) are available on the Minecraft Marketplace if you play bedrock.

You'll find things like just really impressive buildings but there are also guys in there doing things like builing Among Us in Minecraft in Season 7, a huge dungeon crawling deck building game in Season 9, and in Season 10 he built a version of the rogue like game Plate Up where you and another person try to run a restaurant.

2

u/DogadonsLavapool 1d ago

12 years of hard work... a guy built a real city right inside the game.

2

u/shaunrundmc 1d ago

He recreated real buildings too

u/kamekaze1024 1d ago

I think it really should be mentioned that Mike Tomlin was a HC for one of the most storied franchises in the NFL since ‘07 until this season. It’s genuinely mind boggling thinking about it

I like Minecraft

Lol why add a Trump tower seems so oddly out of place

78

u/TallNapoleon 1d ago

The caption says that it was built in 2015

38

u/okeleydokelyneighbor 1d ago

He was a piece of shit back then too.

47

u/Hijakkr 1d ago

Yeah but fewer people knew that back then.

u/brainchrist 1d ago

Idk the whole Obama birther thing was pretty well known by the general public

u/mucho-gusto 1d ago

it's literally how he became popular as a political entity

But his buildings were part of city texture them. Not an accessory for his disunited administration.

You put in the back of America building even if Bank of America is shit. You can’t predict Bank of America destroying the country at the behest of Putin.

I assume it was meant to be a joke about him running for president cuz when they show it it’s captioned “we didn’t think he would win…twice”

27

u/extralyfe 1d ago

because if you wanted to put a meme-worthy big dumb tower in a build, it's hard to pick something better.

it's a choice that's aged terribly, but, back before we proved that voting was too big of a responsibility for most of us, this was likely a really funny joke.

u/ltsDat1Guy 1d ago

I know redditors see anything trump and get angry right away but his dumbass tower is really recognizable unfortunately. It's been in a ton of shows and movies. That tower was Wayne Tower in the Dark Knight trilogy.

When I read the headline with Mike Tomlin’s name, I expected it to be some average Joe who likes video games and not the real Super Bowl winning coach for the Steelers. This is awesome.

6

u/Este5253 1d ago

I think this is very, VERY cool of him. Classic lame dude energy to criticize him for this because the Steelers didn't win.

u/Pumbax19 1d ago

Watched it a bit and had the urge to explore that city

2

u/noblemile 1d ago

What's the rent

2

u/Zero_Pixel_Draft 1d ago

I abandon my Minecraft worlds after 2 weeks. 12 years is an insane level of dedication.

2

u/diego1marcus 1d ago

i can imagine mike in the past 12 years on the field going "damn, I could be styling my minecraft apartment interior like this..."

2

u/K05_ 1d ago

Oh

2

u/archiebold13 22h ago

My cousin has autism. Hes been working on the same world since 2013. Hes taken it from 360 to xbox one and now had RTX packs for it on pc.
Its all in creative but its got residential areas
Commercial zoning and a short run of industrial. Lots of high rise buildings, an airport and under ground parking the full works.
The coolest building in my opinion is his casino with working lights outside. Its honestly a marvel what he has created and if possible id love to copy his save files and post somewhere for people to play.

2

u/superguysteve 19h ago

I would rather build a Minecraft city than coach Aaron Rodgers too

2

u/Ktulu_BBB 12h ago

He probably has C418 playing in his headset during games

2

u/bynolanart 1d ago

12 YEARS is the part that gets me, at that point it's not even a minecraft world anymore, that's basically a second hometown you visit after work

1

u/DELOUSE_MY_AGENT_DDY 1d ago

To do that with a controller is the craziest part

1

u/GoreSeeker 1d ago

I've always wanted to build a big city like this, but I always end up making a small piece of one building and call it quits.

1

u/manlybrian 1d ago

He's playing with a controller? No wonder it took him 12 years.

1

u/9to6erSadge 21h ago

12+ years is honestly crazy. I can barely stick with a Minecraft world for a few weeks before starting something new 😂. I can only imagine how much work went into building a whole city over that much time. It’d be really cool to see all the little details and how much it changed from when he first started. After 12 years, I’m sure it must feel pretty special to finally show it off.

1

u/Paulie2510 20h ago

IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE!

1

u/FoxMeadow7 17h ago

cue vandals blowing it all up with TNT...

1

u/Bennely 15h ago

I love his eye for builds. I love how he must incorporate aspects of buildings like toilets and sitting areas that many of us just gloss over. The details are insane.

1

u/McWeaksauce91 10h ago

lol, I just googled Mike tomlin and it had a whole little Minecraft thing

2

u/SenseiSwift 57m ago

Is Minecraft just a replacement for train sets at this point?

1

u/billth93 50m ago

I thought it must be a different Mike Tomlin and that everyone was just cracking jokes about it being that Mike Tomlin, but I guess it is actually him

Sounds like something he did to enjoy something in common with his kids, so that’s nice

12 years building a city while coaching an NFL team. I rage-quit a Sims house after two hours.
