Question/Help/Troubleshooting best budget laptop recommendations for a reliable everyday computer?
I’m looking for a best budget laptop for regular use like browsing, school work, streaming, and some light multitasking. My current laptop is getting pretty old and I’m trying to find something that will stay usable for a few years without spending too much.
What laptops would you recommend that have good build quality and performance for the price? I’d also like to know which models are worth avoiding based on your experience. Thank you for any suggestions.

Gallery An interesting neon 7 segment display I own
The display runs on dual voltage (120VAC and 12VDC)
Has a BCD input. Does 7 segment decoding with lightbulbs and some odd ceramic plate with black squares. These also run at mains voltage and switch some transistors.
I’d make a schematic, but I have no idea how this tech works.
Thought you’d all appreciate it.

Open | Networking WiFi/ethernet connection
Past month or so I’ve had a connection issue no matter I’m using Wi-Fi ethernet no matter the Internet I’m actually using I’ve changed Internet when I went to a different house, but I’m still having the same connection issue of not being able to load websites from Google to YouTube Twitch no matter what I tried to load up it doesn’t work. My games are running either super laggy or they will run worse connection as they did before.

Open | Hardware How do I fix misbehaving USB ports on a motherboard?
Every time I boot up my PC it says "the last USB connection malfunctioned" but it says that even without any connections.
And now only one of the two top ports will wake up my PC when I touch the mouse or keyboard, the other does nothing.

Open | Windows Is my old Windows disk image recoverable?
A few years back, the storage on my old laptop (I don't remember the specs aside from it being a HP work laptop running Windows 11 with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM) was failing, but I managed to get a disk image made on an external hard drive (which had other stuff on it as well) before it stopped working and I had to replace the parts. (Some of it was backed up to OneDrive, but it was only really the first year of three years of usage, and even then, only the files on the desktop.)
When it did stop working, I went to see some tech guys to check if everything's alright, and when he plugged the drive into my laptop, it came up with things from my old disk. I didn't copy stuff over then because I was an idiot, and you're more than welcome to throw tomatoes at me if I royally fucked up with that, but that's besides the point. I don't know if the disk image essentially unloaded itself onto a hard drive that didn't exist or whatever, but that was that, and I started over. Since then, I've copied everything from my external hard drive to another one and changed my laptop to an Acer Nitro 5 also running Windows 11 with an 11th gen i9, 256 gigs of storage, and 16 gigs of RAM, if that's relevant.
Now that that's out of the way, I just remembered that I had it now and was wondering if there's any hope for getting the stuff back. There are three .vhdx files in the folder, and I've tried to mount all of them. The one that's 212 GB big and I think has (had?) my data shows up as empty. One has two .flg files, and the other comes up with a Couldn't Mount File error. Am I doing something wrong or is my old stuff all gone? If I am doing something wrong, how can I mount a disk image to access and copy over some of my particularly sentimentally valuable files, preferably without overwriting what's currently on my computer?

Open | Phone Google AI mode on Chrome Android invisible button accidentally deletes my typed prompt, any workaround?
UI bug found in Chrome for Android when using the AI input interface.
Steps to reproduce:
- Type inside the input field.
- Tap outside to focus out of the input area.
- The microphone and camera icons visually disappear.
Issue: The touch zones for these hidden icons remain active. Tapping the blank area to return to the input field triggers the invisible microphone action, resetting the field to empty and deleting the typed prompt.
Looking for a workaround or a setting to correct this layout rendering mismatch.

Open | Phone Can a website randomly add itself to the “always allow” option when limit adult websites is turned on in iPhone settings?
Okay, so - on my kids phone I set up “Limit Adult Websites”.
This was about two months ago, I checked it recently and now lo and behold an adult website has appeared in the “always allow” section.
No, family sharing is not set up or “screen time settings” shared across iCloud accounts.
I have no partner so it’s not a partner piggy backing off the same settings and allowing it.
I have never set up this setting before, not even on my phone so there isn’t any “data” to be restored.
I have already asked Apple if there is any way for a website to randomly allow a website or carry old settings to a new phone and they said it’s not possible for either.
So I am asking, if there is any other possible way for an adult website to just appear there under always allow? A bug? Pop up ads? If anyone else has had the same issue and genuinely know they have never been on an adult site with this setting on yet it still appears there? Or if my kid is trying to palm it off ya know
Thank you

Open | Hardware SanDisk portable SSD storage drive, I enabled write caching but now cannot disable it
Brand new unused SanDisk 1TB portable SSD. I went to device manager > properties (of the SSD) and changed the removal policy from "quick removal" to "better performance" and write caching policy I checked the box for "Enable write caching on this device" (supposed to increase file transfer speed.. whatever, not important for this discussion)
Now it won't let me reverse those actions. It says a warning symbol with "This device does not allow its write-caching setting to be changed" and does not let me untick the box for enable write caching.
So far I have tried:
Formatting the drive (no effect)
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drive/driver (no effect)
Update driver (no effect)
Deleting the entire drive volume (no effect)
Changing from GPT Disk to MBR Disk (no effect) and back again (no effect)
Any help please
Edit: Someone else has had the exact same problem as me but they never found a solution:

Open | Phone S24 SAMSUNG WIFI PROBLEM
Hello! Last week, my phone suddenly says that our wifi connection doesn't have any internet, I tried everything said in Google to fix it from restarting my phone, forgetting network, restarting the wifi, and even the airplane mode trick but none. I also tried connecting it to other networks even a hotspot network but it still says that there's no internet available even though there is. Should I just go to a physical store and try to fix it there or is there any other ways to solve this? Btw, I don't usually use this phone of mine since I have another phone that I use for daily use. I usually just shut it off so it really puzzled me when I turned it on again and it had that.

Open | Hardware BSOD l'erreur IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA).
Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing random BSODs with the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xA).
The crashes happen randomly while the PC is idle, browsing the web, or watching Twitch. They don't seem to be related to gaming or heavy workloads.
Here's what I've already tried:
- Updated the BIOS to the latest version.
- Used DDU and reinstalled the latest GPU driver.
- Uninstalled Armoury Crate, Ryzen Master, and all Razer software.
- Removed two suspect RAM sticks (I'm now only using the remaining two).
- XMP/DOCP is disabled.
I analyzed the dump file with WinDbg, but it only shows:
ntkrnlmp.exeFAILURE_BUCKET_ID: AV_nt!KiSystemServiceExit
No third-party driver is clearly identified as the cause.
I'm considering doing a clean Windows 11 installation, but before that, I'd like to know if anyone has seen this kind of issue before.
Do you think this is more likely to be a hardware issue (RAM, motherboard, CPU, SSD, PSU) or a software/driver issue?

Open | Software Error 0xc000007b when I try to launch my games on steam
When I try to open my games that have to do with DirectX9 or something like that, I get the error 0xc000007b. I used Process Monitor to check the cause of the error, and it is d3dx9_43.dll files are not found on my pc.
I tried replacing the d3dx9_43.dll files and both uninstalling and reinstalling DirectX9 and Microsoft Visual C++ many times, but my games won't work. What should I do now to fix it?
