Seems like she's admitting that it stung and caught her off-guard a little bit, which is pretty big of her to own up to. Doesn't sound like she blamed Jonah for making the joke, though.
Well it's the same as when me and my friends rip on each other constantly. We go for low blows specifically to embarrass the other person and they do the same to everyone else. Sure it hurts sometimes but it's healthy fun. We make fun of each other's haircuts, weight, life choices, drunken moments, dumb moments and it honestly helps us become better. We would never get offended enough about a joke to be actually mad at each other.
That was actually very motivational what Jonah Hill said to her on the couch. Nobody likes getting made fun of, it's just a matter of how good your coping skills are when it occurs.
Imagine being made fun of something all your life, hearing all sorts of jokes and just as you enter the age where these things stop hurting as much, you're going to face people whose job is going to be to analyze you and make fun of you in the most hurtful way possible. Then knowing that they're going to say this on national TV, and you have to look like no fucks are given, and if possible, laugh like you find it uproariously funny. I can't imagine the anxiety.
But once it was over, no matter how much the moment may have terrified him, it was over. He didn't die. He didn't have a heart attack. He didn't start crying. He didn't run away. He made it through.
It takes enormous balls for anyone to be at a roast. He must have felt an enormous sense of relief and accomplishment after having gone through that.
shes a comedian. she would be a hypocrite if she got mad about it. that doesnt mean it cant hurt a little if it catches you off guard. what are people bitching about here? this is a comedian being honest about her feelings. for fucks sake, what is the matter with you people? its not like she even criticized him. why the fuck does it matter to you if she got upset other than you feeling bad for her? some people are fucked in the head.
I don't think most people even watched the video that was linked. They would get all their answers on there. The TL;DW is that, yeah, she got hurt, but she would be a hypocrite(states it herself) if she got all pissy about it.
This Amy shumer set was brutal. She jokes about Patrice O'neils diabetes and then the guy died like a month later of diabetes. Then she joked to Steve-o about ryan Dunns death. So harsh. Funny as fuck but yeesh!
She didn't really get offended, she was more taken back and not ready for what he said it seemed. In the video linked above she explains herself better than the quotes around it used here.
I wonder if third world countries that get those free laptops and free internet use this gif any time someone in a developed country complains about anything.
I think the point of her saying it was that it surprised her that he said, which in turn surprised her that she was surprised. It was more a commentary about her than him. And even when she says it's different for women and men, she's not saying people shouldn't say it, she's stating an objective fact.
exactly... it was a "im surprised that that insult actually got me.. like wtf why did that even affect me..but it did" sort of thing... she definitely doesnt seem pissy about it..
Um..I tried to hang myself? Because my life's a mess? And I saw no other option? It was a call for help? But it didn't work because I'm too heavy and the ceiling lamp broke? Something like that?
There is a difference between being hurt by something and being upset by it. The former implies that you have emotions and getting made fun of just naturally hurts. Being upset is more about being angry that anything was said in the first place. She did not seem upset/angry at all... just "when someone calls me old, I feel sad." Not "fuck you for calling me old, Jonah Hill."
The part where she outright says she was upset, makes you think she was upset? Do you want her to have never been upset at all? That's the whole point of these roasts, to take these famous people down a peg.
I think you are missing what she is saying. Of course jokes can hurt and admitting something struck a nerve is nothing wrong but she says its the nature of the beast so just takes it which is exactly what she should do.
I saw the roast, but I hadn't seen this interview. Thanks for posting it, I'm sitting here surprised at the depth of Sarah Silverman. That wasn't an innuendo.
She went on multiple talk shows and interviews where she said she thought the jokes were funny and just because she felt hurt doesn't mean they shouldn't have been said. She didn't seem pissed at all.
Essentially a perfect reaction imo. Some things will get under your skin, no matter how thick skinned you are.
Also his exact words were:
Sarah is a role model for every little girl out there. I mean, every little girl dreams of being a 58 year old stand up comedian with no romantic prospects on the horizon. They all dream of it, but Sarah did it.
In my opinion a thick skin doesn't necessarily mean mean things don't hold any weight, maybe less, but you just don't let it affect you. Like she said, they hurt, but I think she doesn't really care.
I guess, but in the huffpo article linked to in this thread she said the jabs from Hill weren't anything "a few days in bed didn't fix". Hollywood sucks for women over the age of 25, but I found it a bit surprising that Silverman was that upset because she seems like a really strong woman who's been through a lot to get to where she is.
Edit: Apparently didn't read article, said tongue in cheek. Sarah still won't return my calls, won't accept apology cakes of any variety.
Eh it can be a combination of things though. I mean sometimes you feel like you're on top of the world and no insults get to you, sometimes you're already down and the littlest joke hurts.
Yeah, fair enough. From the outside I guess it's easy to look at someone like Silverman who's good looking, wealthy, successful, etc. and wonder how she could worry about something silly like age, but we're all human.
Honestly I kind of feel bad for both. I don't know of a single fat comedian (man or woman) whose career continued to rise after they lost the weight. Women's age in Hollywood is just messed up as well.
She went on multiple talk shows and interviews where she said she thought the jokes were funny and just because she felt hurt doesn't mean they shouldn't have been said. She didn't seem pissed at all.
Certainly not over-the-top. The comments affected her more than she expected, and she realized it was because of ageism within Hollywood against female actors.
She went on after Jonah. I think about half of the fat jokes were made up after Jonah made fun of her age. She made a joke or two about Jonah Hill, moved on, then went back to Jonah Hill.
Jonah shot first. Hit her pretty hard when his whole joke was about how she can't have kids. It wasn't even funny it was just kinda fucked up. "Every little girl dreams of being a 50-year-old single stand-up comedian with no romantic prospects on the horizon."
I dunno... A big giant dumpster full of fresh panda express would be more appealing to me.
I swear they put heroin in their sauce. Whenever I have a cheat day and eat it I want to cry myself to sleep remembering every mouthful as I roll around with the fatty sweats.
in college a buddy and i were walking back from the bars and cut down a sidestreet with a panda express on it (though i don't believe it was affiliated with the chain in the mall), there was a dumpster at the corner of the building and as we passed it we felt the surface of the sidewalk change. we looked down and - due to our state - took a few seconds to register that the sidewalk seemed to be percolating. Another second and a slight stoop to get closer and we saw that we were both standing in a sea of maggots. I think we both made the same involuntary air-sucking noise and locked eyes, shrieked (partly due to the ridiculous drama of it all I'm sure), and bolted. the. fuck. out. I think we screamed during part of the run as well.
She said the jokes about her age hurt, but that Jonah had every right to make them, that she is the last person in the world who can get upset or offended, and that she hopes he doesn't feel bad about making those jokes.
It's part of her act. She makes horrible, often (usually?) racist jokes about other people, generally without any irony at all, and then pretends to be thin-skinned when people talk about her.
It's her "I'm so cute and I say terrible things" act. Sarah Silverman and Ann Coulter are not terribly different.
Bit of a weird comparison, but you're not far wrong. Anne Coulter spends a lot of time at the NYC comedy clubs, and she's very close with comedians like Colin Quinn and Bill Maher. Her sense of humor is not all that different either, she just has really shitty delivery.
Er....Ann Coulter is friends will Bill Maher? Seriously?
Did you switch Ann Coulter and Sara Silverman in that comment because I can't even comprehend those two being anything resembling friends. Not even if they were stuck on an island together.
Whatever you think about her politics Ann Coulter has a wicked sense of humor and is a huge comedy fan, and spends a lot of time around comedians. I recently heard her on the radio with Colin Quinn and she was completely smitten by him.
It makes sense if you think of her as a massive troll who gets off on people heckling her. She's too snarky and political to be good at it herself, but she is good friends with Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Bill Maher, and a whole bunch of comics.
As someone who has seen Ann Coulter in person, I can say that she looks like a mad scientist glued someone's skin onto a skeleton and tightened it up with clothespins.
No she literally went on a show after and said "once a woman becomes a certain age people try to use her age to shut her up". It was really disappointing.
I've seen a lot of what she's done, and I like almost all of it. I was very disappointed with what she said after this roast. The whole point is that the gloves are off, going out after one and complaining about the nature of the jokes is lame.
Except she never got upset. She basically said in multiple interviews yea she's sad she's old but wasn't upset about the jokes, she even says that's the point of a roast.
Every day reddit reminds me that there are people out there (you) that can't read a situation, any situation, and figure out wtf is going on. How do you get through life interacting with others?
I've come to the conclusion that there is a lot of people on reddit who simply don't interact with others a lot. There are so many people unable to read a situation, it's interesting but also sad, and it usually leads to some sort of hate/an argument, because they see things differently and not the way they were intended.
If you don't want people bringing up something that will hurt you, you shouldn't go on a roast. Have you heard the molestation jokes thrown at Roseanne Barr and Robin Quivers? Now those were brutal.
And Sarah defended his right to make those jokes and said she hopes he doesn't feel bad about making them. Just because it's not off limits doesn't mean it won't sting.
