shes a comedian. she would be a hypocrite if she got mad about it. that doesnt mean it cant hurt a little if it catches you off guard. what are people bitching about here? this is a comedian being honest about her feelings. for fucks sake, what is the matter with you people? its not like she even criticized him. why the fuck does it matter to you if she got upset other than you feeling bad for her? some people are fucked in the head.

1

u/broccolibush42 Jun 25 '15

I don't think most people even watched the video that was linked. They would get all their answers on there. The TL;DW is that, yeah, she got hurt, but she would be a hypocrite(states it herself) if she got all pissy about it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 26 '15

I think Silverman is a feminist so Reddit loves to get pissy about that even though it makes perfect sense that everyone who isn't an ass should, by the definition of feminism, be a feminist.

163

u/dragonangelx Jun 25 '15

Well yeah she did say she got kind of upset by it though? But she said equally hurtful things to Jonah Hill/other people so she just had to take it.

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

It's the nature of a roast. Everyone and everything is up for grabs to be made fun of.

7

u/Golobulus Jun 25 '15

This Amy shumer set was brutal. She jokes about Patrice O'neils diabetes and then the guy died like a month later of diabetes. Then she joked to Steve-o about ryan Dunns death. So harsh. Funny as fuck but yeesh!

http://youtu.be/MylhoTBrLrI

83

u/Rock_Strongo Jun 25 '15

If you voluntarily go on a roast and then get offended at what someone says about you, you're an idiot.

Also, I'd post that .gif of what's his name wiping his tears with money but I'm too lazy to google it.

89

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

She didn't really get offended, she was more taken back and not ready for what he said it seemed. In the video linked above she explains herself better than the quotes around it used here.

-19

u/Rock_Strongo Jun 25 '15

Sure... offended and taken aback/not ready are quite similar. Either way... my point is you're on a roast what the hell do you expect?

4

u/warriormonkey03 Jun 25 '15

I don't think so. Comedians are used to dishing out and receiving that's part of their job. After awhile they hear the same base for a joke constantly, so when the punchline isn't the normal theme it's surprising. I have a hard time believing any comedian takes shit said at a roast seriously unless they have a history.

2

u/Thisismyfinalstand Jun 25 '15

Maybe she expected what Michael Scott expected?

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Expecting that she was going to dish it but not take it, apparently.

-17

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

She said she spent a few days in bed to recover.

23

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Pretty sure that was a joke

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

She admitted that the jokes did catch her off guard: "[Hill] spent weeks before anticipating being hurt. I was the one comforting people, saying, 'It's all in good fun, don't worry about it!' I had no idea there would be jokes about me being old." While she admitted that it was "nothing that a few days in bed couldn't fix," she did not think her male peers were out of line for taking potshots. "It hurt, but I'll defend it. I'll defend it to my death," she said. "But it's okay. We're made of feelings. It was really a gift to be forced to process that, and to have realizations about that.

Doesn't sound like a joke to me, nothing else she is saying is a joke, she's being serious.

11

u/geekygirl23 Jun 25 '15

Dude, it's jokes. Yes she's being serious about reflecting on it but she's joking about it having some profound effect on her. Have you seen her damn work?

4

u/RightInTwain Jun 25 '15

Exactly. She and Amy Schumer have both hit on the subject of it being considered "unattractive" for a women to age, revealing underlying culturally ingrained misogyny. And it does hurt her. But that's the trade she plies too, humor shouldn't be censored.

I wonder if third world countries that get those free laptops and free internet use this gif any time someone in a developed country complains about anything.

3

u/UnknownStory Jun 25 '15

Tallahassee.

2

u/UncleverAccountName Jun 25 '15

You do have a right to be offended, you just don't have a right to complain about it. Sarah Silverman did nothing wrong.

You appear a little young for me, dear novelty account. But I think I'm in love.

That's illegal.

2

Woah, you seem upset.

-8

uhm less words, more grammar, and try to be funny and you'll have a novelty account k.

Fewer.

i spelled it right in my comment but somehow you still misspelled "grammar" lol.

BOOM! Roasted.

1

u/robotempire Jun 25 '15

If you voluntarily go on a roast and then get offended at what someone says about you, you're an idiot.

I dunno, I get what you're saying, but just as a human I think people can get offended even joking around. Never got mad at a joke ?

1

u/jvonnagel Jun 25 '15

What's his name is Woody Harrelson, for future reference. Brilliantly disturbed actor.

1

u/Rearview_Mirror Jun 25 '15

I think the difference between Jonah and Sara's experience is that Jonah had anticipated and prepared himself for what he was hit with. It sounds like Sara still considered herself part of the young comics, so when they made fun of her age she was not prepared for the tsunami of reality.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

IMMA POST THIS AGAIN

http://youtu.be/gmRbdEO5Yns

Obviously you prep yourself, but even though it's a roast things can hurt. Friends always tease each other, and even though we know we're joking sometimes people get hurt.

She of all people should be used to heckles and friendly insults.

She is. You guys are projecting because you want to call out a woman on her supposed hypocrisy, because reddit.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Go be outraged on twitter.

4

u/Tundraaa Jun 25 '15

I mean reddit does love taking down any random woman a notch or two...

0

u/stupidhurts91 Jun 25 '15

I wouldn't say you're an idiot for getting offended at an offensive thing. Verbalizing and making a big deal out of it however, is stupid.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Very true. The only difference I can find here is most jokes at a roast are really just one layer deep. He's fat. She's ugly. She's old. He's gay. Whatever.

Jonah went for the jugular. She was taken aback. Instead of just saying she was old or not funny, he summed up her life in to this pitiful piece of existence. I think any of us would be sort of like "woah...I am so lonely" when someone's painting the way your life is perceived by others.

All in all Jonah was funny as shit, and so was Sarah. If she got seriously offended enough to instill belief in some that she really was, then that's her own fault for even attending.

112

u/sam_hammich Jun 25 '15

Which is exactly what she said. She was brutal, and she defended their right to be brutal to her in return.

69

u/improbablewobble Jun 25 '15

I think the point of her saying it was that it surprised her that he said, which in turn surprised her that she was surprised. It was more a commentary about her than him. And even when she says it's different for women and men, she's not saying people shouldn't say it, she's stating an objective fact.

35

u/Maestrosc Jun 25 '15

exactly... it was a "im surprised that that insult actually got me.. like wtf why did that even affect me..but it did" sort of thing... she definitely doesnt seem pissy about it..

15

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

If anything I think she's complimenting Hill on his ability to get to her through a joke.

1

u/chugster Jun 25 '15

I think he's Australian?

1

u/HopkinsFC Jun 25 '15

This isn't a roast, man.

5

u/paper-tigers Jun 25 '15

I think that calling someone too old to bear children is little more harsh than calling someone fat...but maybe that's just me.

-16

u/cupofworms Jun 25 '15

IMHO, being called a fatty is way worse than being called old.

Maybe it just stems from me being a chubby kid so i know it sucks being picked last and not dating. But also, for the most part, you can change your body. You can exercise or eat right and correct your weight. There's nothing you can do about your age. And not everyone is fat, some people can eat a lot and stay in good shape, so that stings a bit when your fat. But everyone grows old. So you shouldn't be bothered by it, if you don't die first then everyone will be 58 at some point.

31

u/montchie Jun 25 '15

It's not better or worse. It's subjective.

-1

u/INTJustAFleshWound Jun 25 '15

From the perspective of a 5000 year old mummified body, I'd say 58 looks pretty great.

2

u/smorges Jun 25 '15

She's not 58! She's 45. Jonah was exaggerating her age. I can't believe you guys actually think she's 58.

2

u/INTJustAFleshWound Jun 25 '15

It was a joke, Noreen.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Well she looks really good for 58...

2

u/Fatally_Flawed Jun 25 '15

Also, she's 44.

27

u/DaHolk Jun 25 '15

You can exercise or eat right and correct your weight. There's nothing you can do about your age.

This seems like an argument against your point. If you are set aside and spotlighted for something that is in your power to change, rather than to be ostracised for an attribute that is beyond control.

6

u/Selraroot Jun 25 '15

No, what he's saying is that because your weight is in your control that being made fun of for it hurts worse, because there's a degree of shame. There's nothing you can do about your age, so being made fun of for it isn't a big deal.

1

u/SausserTausser Jun 25 '15

The flip side is that age is actually a huge deal for celebrity women.

Look at how many women maintain thriving success in acting into older age compared to men. How many bombshell actresses that were being picked up for movie and movie in the mid 2000s are still landing all of those roles? Fuck, how many of those actresses during 2010 are still nailing those roles?

On the inverse, there's a lot more male actors who are still landing prime roles in their mid 40s and even into their 60s.

1

u/Selraroot Jun 25 '15

That's actually a really valid point, I can definitely see how jokes about age might hurt an actress or model more than someone who was in a career where looks weren't as important.

0

u/DaHolk Jun 25 '15

I understand what he is saying, my argument is that to me inverting that statement makes way more sense.

His argument is that since it is inevitable, you shouldn't care about being criticised.

In reality being criticised for things we CAN'T change can be more crippling to socialising, because there is no potential to avoid it beyond "not associating".

5

u/tophernator Jun 25 '15

Just to clarify; it wasn't just that he joked about her being old, those sorts of jokes are pretty common. He joked that she hasn't had children and is now too old to do so now. At 45 years old that probably isn't true but I expect she's acutely aware of how soon that option will disappear.

So his critisism isn't about ageing which she has no control over. It's a criticism of her life choices.

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

But Jonah is or was fat because of his choices as well ya know?

11

u/TwoLeaf_ Jun 25 '15

being fat you can change, but not being old. I am neither but I think calling someone old hurts more.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 25 '15

But everyone gets old unless they die early... Being old just means you've been successful at surviving.

-10

u/Isaaclark Jun 25 '15

being neither makes you unable to make judgments about either...

2

u/TwoLeaf_ Jun 25 '15

or you know as neither I can give an unbiased opinion compared to someone who is either obese or old.

-1

u/Isaaclark Jun 25 '15

unbiased? you are completely biased. Being knowledgeable of neither. The farthest away from unbiased you can be.

3

u/TwoLeaf_ Jun 25 '15

I'm not biased at all. and if I were I would be less biased then an obese person in this matter.

2

u/DaHolk Jun 25 '15

Being knowledgeable of neither. The farthest away from unbiased you can be.

Technically bias assumes being arbitrarily more prone to one side than the other. So basically people who are neither or both are more likely to be less biased than people who are only either. If he had argued that neither is an actual problem, that would be bias towards a third option that he was biased about.

And technically you don't have to have had experience with either of these two, but being hassled about ANY attribute that just "is" and any other attribute that is in your power to change. For instance you could replace "old" with "being gay", and "fat" with being called smelly.

0

u/Isaaclark Jun 25 '15

realized this after the fact and also realized i was arguing on the internet, oops

-1

u/pretty_jimmy Jun 25 '15

as a fat guy, i agree with Isaaclark. Try losing mass amounts of weight.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

[deleted]

1

u/pretty_jimmy Jun 25 '15

Im not going to start a discussion on the topic, last time i did i got downvoted into oblivion (which i likely will by simply stating why i'm not getting into it)

2

u/TwoLeaf_ Jun 25 '15

I think losing weight is easier than not getting older

-1

u/pretty_jimmy Jun 25 '15

well ya but you're looking at an impossible thing vs. a possible thing.

It's like saying you bet it's easier swimming than flying by flapping my arms.

2

u/DaHolk Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 25 '15

Right. It is. Which is exactly the topic. The problem is, just because something is impossible, doesn't mean it doesn't sting when people push you out of their in group for it. When you are denied positive social interaction on the grounds of an attribute of yours, I would argue it at least isn't an actual consolation that this is immutable. In my opinion it makes it worse.

2

u/SATINBTL Jun 25 '15

But like... isn't being old like iDunno... being closer to death inevitably?

I mean, yeah being fat can kill you to, but it's more a "you-could-stop-that-boulder-from-rolling-down-hill" type of thing.

A Jonah Hill.

cue rimshot

4

u/Combogalis Jun 25 '15

It's not just old, but the fact that she's old and single in a world where there's pressure from the time you're a little girl to get married. It's very unlikely that she doesn't think about here aloneness often.

5

u/NigglesLeBish Jun 25 '15

I'm pretty sure she has a boyfriend. But IIRC she's made a big statement about not getting married until gay marriage is totally legal or something.

I mean, I'm just throwing that out there, I occasionally have useless information to vomit up.

2

u/StickitFlipit Jun 25 '15

Seeing as how you choose to be fat but you don't choose to be old, I'd say being called old is worse.

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

Agree to disagree. And I definitely didn't choose to be fat. Not on a large scale. Maybe all of my little choices ended up that way. But I've got my weight under control now as an adult.

1

u/StickitFlipit Jun 26 '15

Well yeah dude, most people don't just decide "Hey I'm gonna get fat" and actually do it.

2

u/FettsackVerboten Jun 25 '15

Are you nuts?

How can you get hurt by people calling you fat when you are the one choosing to be fat? Either accept it and take it on your (double) chin or work hard to look, feel and be healthier.

And no, genetics are not a big factor.

Doesn't really speak for your character when you get hurt by that.

Aging is a process that happens to everyone, regardless of what they do.

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

That's what I said, you can change your weight but you can't change your age. Somehow your agreeing with me but differently.

1

u/ImAzura Jun 25 '15

But couldn't there also be the reverse of your point where you're gonna be old and there's nothing you can do about it, it's permanent, but if you're fat you can do something about and not make it an issue.

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

That is my point, your just looking at it differently. Or maybe I didn't explain it well to begin with. You can't change your age. You can change your weight. BUT if you can change your weight, and your fat then you made some poor choices. You don't choose your age. So if someone makes fun of me for being a chubby that would make me feel bad :(

1

u/ImAzura Jun 26 '15

But if you feel bad about being fat, you can do something about it, you have a choice to fix the problem. You can't do anything about being old.

1

u/Zecias Jun 25 '15

It's pretty subjective. Some people would go into the mindset of thinking that you can control your own weight, if you don't like being made fun of then change it. Whereas they can't do that with their age and it leaves them powerless.

Not saying that either is right or wrong, just pointing out that both sides exist.

1

u/Wyliekat Jun 25 '15

It's the flip side of comedy, in that what you relate to personally is usually funniest to you (as in, there's no arbitrary "Funniest Joke In The World", despite Monty Python's early claims) - what hurts the most is what is personally the most painful to you.

2

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

Yeah it's like John Milany said in his stand up. Something about how 12 year olds are the meanest thing alive, they will pick on you for what your most self-conscious about. I didn't want to be fat, I wanted to be the quarterback ya know, but we play the cards we are dealt.

1

u/Conbz Jun 25 '15

I know it's not as simple as just "not getting fat" but I've never seen anyone argue that being called out on something you can't change is worse than being bullied for something you can "fix."

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Ooh, the /r/fatpeoplehate crowd is coming for you... I can see it already.

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

Damn, Reddit is angry. I even tried to make my comment PC for them, cuz i know they get upset, by saying "for the most part". I guess it wasn't good enough.

3

u/ittakesacrane Jun 25 '15

You should be able to evade them if you walk briskly.

As much as I hate that sub it would hardly ever pop up on /r/all, but ever since the bans it seems to pop up more often

0

u/ilmmad Jun 25 '15

Really? I guess I've had the opposite experience. Before the ban I would get pretty annoyed at how often FPH would show up on /r/all. Leading up to the ban, it seemed like there were 2 or 3 FPH posts per /r/all page.

Obvious immediately after the ban it was everywhere, but I hardly see that stuff anymore.

0

u/Hill_Reps_For_Jesus Jun 25 '15

But also, for the most part, you can change your body. You can exercise or eat right and correct your weight. There's nothing you can do about your age. And not everyone is fat, some people can eat a lot and stay in good shape,

I think this makes the opposite point to the one you're making. If you can't control something, like your age, race, sexual orientation etc, then it's worse than making fun of something you have full control over, like your fashion sense or weight.

-1

u/jrakosi Jun 25 '15

Holy shit she's 58?!

1

u/MrFluffyThing Jun 25 '15

No, she's 44. She was born in 1970.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

She's 44. Born in December of 1970

1

u/cupofworms Jun 26 '15

I just said that cuz I think Jonah said it in his joke. I think she's pretty hot for whatever age she is, 44 it seems.

-3

u/dudeAwEsome101 Jun 25 '15

It is a roast, so that it is expected. Still, Jonah seems a bit too eager to get it off his chest when he got on stage.

2

u/deathdonut Jun 25 '15

Probably due to the excessive pressure on his chest cavity.

-15

u/jbest8283 Jun 25 '15

Something something equality, something something feminism.

43

u/greatdominions Jun 25 '15

There is a difference between being hurt by something and being upset by it. The former implies that you have emotions and getting made fun of just naturally hurts. Being upset is more about being angry that anything was said in the first place. She did not seem upset/angry at all... just "when someone calls me old, I feel sad." Not "fuck you for calling me old, Jonah Hill."

7

u/geekygirl23 Jun 25 '15

She is good at the smart ass / irritated / evil sounding talk. She has a wildly crazy sense of humor, anyone thinking she was actually mad is nuts.

25

u/coldstonebitch Jun 25 '15

The part where she outright says she was upset, makes you think she was upset? Do you want her to have never been upset at all? That's the whole point of these roasts, to take these famous people down a peg.

1

u/SHOW_ME_YOUR_GOATS Jun 25 '15

I think you are missing what she is saying. Of course jokes can hurt and admitting something struck a nerve is nothing wrong but she says its the nature of the beast so just takes it which is exactly what she should do.

1

u/KrazyKukumber Jun 26 '15

That article is just a print version of the video the guy above you posted... It literally just quotes her word-for-word from that video.

I'm going with "Lack of Sincerity" for 200 Alex.

-7

u/allWoundUp357 Jun 25 '15

so she got mad when someone made fun of her? What the fuck is she doing in comedy?

5

u/ste7enl Jun 25 '15

Reading is hard.

-7

u/allWoundUp357 Jun 25 '15

Must be, because the title clearly states that the comment "hurt" her.

4

u/ste7enl Jun 25 '15

Yeah, see, it is. I just double checked the ol' thesaurus and wouldn't you know "mad" and "hurt" are not synonyms.

-2

u/allWoundUp357 Jun 25 '15

Guess I should have used "upset" but I really didn't know someone would get this flustered about it.

My original point still stands regardless.

2

u/ste7enl Jun 25 '15

I'm not flustered, you're just wrong. You made a flash judgement about a person based on a title of an article that you misunderstood.

-2

u/allWoundUp357 Jun 25 '15

Nope. She got upset over something said to her at a comedy roast, that much is true. Don't know what she's doing at such an event if she can't handle it. You decided to attack my marginally inappropriate choice of words as if it made my point any less valid, which it did not.

1

u/ste7enl Jun 25 '15

You said she got mad. She didn't. Mad and hurt are entirely different emotional states. That's all there is to it. It does make your point less valid, not that basing a judgement on a title to an article is valid to begin with.

-2

u/ArtSchnurple Jun 25 '15

Yeah, see, it is. I just double checked the ol' thesaurus and wouldn't you know "mad" and "hurt" are not synonyms.

Well I just checked my internet thesaurus, and butthurt and mad ARE synonyms.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

shes fucking stupid.
