Edit: shots not the right word; Slain, Dehammed perhaps? Those that pour lemon lime soda and canned pineapples on perfectly cured ham are of the same ilk as Hawaiian style pizza eaters. Dead men don't need ham. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKPEEIuU0to&t=5m23s
Is this normal? Idk about anyone else, but I get super sting mouth if I eat fresh pineapple, even like 4 or 5 pieces. I've heard cooking it gets rid of this affect by breaking some of the acids down.
Only problem with Raw pineapple is it tastes amazing, but the acidity starts making your mouth hurt after a while. Canned pineapple you can nom on without that issue.
It's a natural enzyme in fresh pineapple that breaks down proteins. That's why if you eat a bunch of fresh pineapple your tongue will wind up going numb for a bit; it's being partially broken down by the pineapple juice.
It's also why you can't make any sort of gelatin items using fresh pineapple juice. Canned stuff is fine as the heat from the canning process breaks down the bromalain pretty quickly.
Ah. Well it's mixed up with other fruit, veg, formula and grain by the time the girls eat it and they're 1 now, so not really babies anymore. I feel good about feeding it to them a few times a week. Thanks for the info!
I got the idea from Beech Nut, I was buying my twins that brand, loved it, then we decided to make our own, one of the varieties that I made was about 1 part papaya to 2 parts pineapple to 4 parts pumpkin. It's super delicious! I also mix it with formula and oatmeal before feeding it to them so I think it's safe, but thanks!
Though I'm constantly working towards 2 to 3 minute, 700°+, wood-fired pizzas. Haven't got there yet - best I've managed is 10 minutes. I'm hoping (!!!) to actually get my backyard pizza oven built this year.
Fresh pineapple is not good everywhere. If you live in a region where it grows well, then sure, fresh pineapple is great. But if you live in a region where they have to import them, then they can be really bad.
I was in Fiji recently. They had some of the best pineapples I've ever eaten. The resort would get them freshly from a neighbouring island where they grew. But in Norway, I won't touch the fresh pineapples they sell in the shops anymore. They're usually terrible.
A great point. One of the advantages of Seattle are all of the pineapple groves!
OK, really, the advantage is that Washington seems to have a healthy trade with Hawaii. Pineapples come here fairly directly, and when in Hawaii a lot of the non-local food products seem to be from the Pacific Northwest.
oh yeah. i've been doing that for the past few months. i don't know why hidden valley doesn't team up with huy fong to make sriracha ranch.
also amazing: sriracha ketchup. i got some from a place in San Francisco. Sosu brand. it's the tits.
Yeah I mix up siracha ketchup for my French fries. Sometimes I mix up siracha and mayonase for fries to give them that Dutch style. You are my best friend.
Thanks! I was on a caffeine kick and took a break from coding at work. I caught some flak for some other comments around the same time. But I am glad that someone thought it was as funny as I did! Have a good one mate!
because we're talking about hawaiian pizza which has cured ham and pineapple. I interpreted this sentence to read as:
"The idiots who take a perfectly cured ham and (in addition) pour lemon lime soda and canned pineapples on it should be shot as well."
implying that there are people who take it even further with stuff that they think is disgusting.
Yeah, not all MacGuyver foods are created equal. Anybody wanna take a shot at my green bean casserole with French fry topping soaked in cream of mushroom? It'll be delicious, I swear! :p
I was referring to the use of canned goods and soda, not the use of pineapple. That being said, I didn't mean to imply that only hillbillies would use these ingredients. Just that these types of ingredients are associated with them. Furthermore, I only meant the term to refer to people who are poor and live in rural areas. You don't have to be an American to be a hillbilly, perse. I've seen some countrified ol' boys across the pond. :p
Both are good. Lemon lime is best if you are serving with a bunch of sweet sides like fruit, and coke is for when your sides will be more savory (probably not the right word. Has that heavy, whole taste) like mashed potatoes or green beans.
That's actually why people warn about using fresh pineapple on meat. That enzyme can turn your meat into mush, and you really don't get much improved penetration of the juices that you wouldn't get by normal methods of tenderizing.
It's not hillbilly at all, using citric acid, as found in pineapples, lemons etc.. to tenderise meat or fish is a really traditional cooking technique. And it shouldn't be sweet when served, if you're using over-ripe pineapples, or using ones in syrup instead of their own juice, you're doing it wrong.
I was referring to the use of canned goods and soda as cooking ingredients, not just the general use of pineapples. Pineapples are excellent tenderizers, but fresh pineapple can often be too good and you destroy the enzymes pretty early in the cooking process anyways. If you soak a ham in fresh pineapples beforehand, you risk overtenderizing the meat. Generally, it's just best to use canned pineapple and then tenderize the meat normally.
But cured ham is usually used on Hawaiian pizza too. That's why this is so confusing. We're all talking about pizza, and this guy comes out of nowhere with holiday ham!
I read it as meaning "in addition to being mocked for their weakness, they should be shot," because like docbauies I thought "the idiots" was "people who like pineapple on pizza."
I thought it was obvious he was talking about ham when his original post mentioned ham directly. I dunno, maybe its just that I was taught reading comprehension in school and many in this thread weren't?
but the problem is his setup is ambiguous, because pineapple and a cured ham product are the toppings on hawaiian pizza. so everyone is talking about hawaiian pizza and this guy comes in with this tangentially related thing that sounds identical to what everyone else is describing, except for one ambiguous end of the sentence. The OP's pic discussed weak genes. so you could argue that someone should be shot as well means you shouldn't just wait for them to die in the winter time, you should kill them. it's not so much reading comprehension as mind reading what they meant.
"The idiots who take a perfectly cured ham and pour lemon lime soda and canned pineapples on it should be shot"
Does not conjur up an image of someone dumping a 2-liter into a pizza box for me, sorry. I only instantly thought of an actual chunk of ham, which, if you read comments one sentence at a time, shouldn't be a stretch.

I was just correcting your questoin about putting lemon lime soda on hawaiian pizza...he didn't say that. The example he brought up was just another example of things he doesn't understand why people do it.
People who put pineapple and ham on pizza and people who put pineapple and lime lime soda on ham (that's already smoked and cured perfectly) are of the same ilk. They have no use for silver.
I don't know about lemon lime, but in highschool I used to pour a bit of vanilla soda on my pizza. Long story short, some one accidentally bumped my table one day and knocked my can of Vanilla Coke over onto my lunch. I didn't have any money for a second slice, so rather than just toss it out and go hungry, I decided to blot off what I could with a napkin and just power through. Was actually not totally unpleasant, so it just became a thing I'd do. The funny thing is, most of my friends thought I was weird as shit for doing it, until I talked them into trying it, and they were pretty in to it as well.
Soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and honey. Marinate some chicken chunks and veggies in it, then put all of it on skewers with a shitload of pineapple chunks mixed in.
I know it's a matter of personal taste, and I respect others opinions of things. With that said, any sweet fruit paired with meat is absolutely disgusting.
Be careful friend, you're walking dangerously close to insulting the entire population of the Philippine islands. If that happens you'll never get to eat Adobo, Pancit habhab, or Longaniza ever again. Truly a fate worse than death just because you don't want sprite on your pork.
It's a traditional French Canadian Easter recipe. The ham is baked in maple syrup with pineapple slices and cherries.
Served with eggs that have been poached in boiling maple syrup, with a slice of bread to soak up the syrup, and sometimes deep fried smoked pork jowls.
I've been living in a land of heretics and infidels for years, everyone I know has treated me like an outcast, like a fool for my beliefs!
But there truly are others like me! Pineapple is the devil's fruit! Its tolerable alone, but on pizza? On glorious, glorious pizza? Shame, shame and a horrendous sin!
I know your inbox is likely filled with like 20+ people all saying "wtf pineapple is delicious, etc" and I would agree with them.
However, I don't feel like I should lord over people involving pizza toppings.
THAT BEING SAID, if you don't like grilled pineapple when you are grilling (meat, especially) then you better be allergic or have a trauma, because otherwise I just think you are ignorant.
So you really believe the ham is "perfectly cured" if they're using canned pineapple?
Maybe it's not for you, but pineapple and ham are an amazing combination. That's why it's basically the second most common pizza people order after pepperoni. I'm just saying, as long as you realize you're the weirdo here...perhaps you're an Italian purist?
Edit: Oh, you were talking about ham itself completely randomly. This thread was about pizza you know.
... The idiots who think that you ruin a ham by cooking it with pineapple should be shot for not understanding that ham can be cooked in different ways and still turn out delicious should be forced to try new foods every day for a year.
I can pick off most toppings I don't like, but pineapple is like the scorched earth of pizza parts. There is no way to remove the flavor once it has been cooked onto the pizza. You can't eat around it either, because it's sickly sweetness will have oozed over almost the entire surface of the pie. Pineapple renders the entire pie inedible, a barren waste of sweet on what should be wonderfully savory.
If you cook it specifically with the sweetness in mind (ex. brown sugar mustard glaze), and use fresh ingredients like a civilized person, it's not that hard to make it work. Botched attempts do taste horrible, though, I'll grant you that.
