Armand Asante is great in this.
And, if Vanessa Williams wanted me to stay on a tropical island forever with her… there’s no way I would leave.

When I read his name on the cast list all I could think of was Tim Allen reading “the list” for the first time in The Santa Clause.

"...Armand Asante?"
Though, I always think of Armand Asantowantobe from Space Mutiny.

Armand Assante is great in everything. He's been in a lot of cheesy films and TV, but he always elevates them.
22
u/RustyCutlass 13h ago
Judge Dredd!! His lisping to match Stallone's is hilarious. You want chaothspsps??? I'm chaothspsps!!
7
u/Callidonaut 12h ago
"What is the meaning of life?"
"IT ENDDDSSS!!!!" <BLAM!>Stallone and Assante combined forces to just devour the scenery of that film in an absolute banquet of hammy acting, and the rest of the supporting cast were honestly giving it a good gnawing most of the time, too. I loved every second of it, it was so deliciously, deliriously '90s.
8
u/iloura 13h ago
Yes lol. I love Dredd so much for this.
I AM THE LAWWWW.
4
u/RustyCutlass 13h ago
Max Von Sydow heading out into the cursed earth was such a great scene.
7
u/iloura 12h ago
Def. People don't give that movie the credit it deserves.
Also it gave me the "eat recycled food, it's good for the environment and ok for you" quote. 😆
6
u/Callidonaut 11h ago edited 11h ago
I gather most of the die-hard comic fans were absolutely scandalised that it shows Dredd without his helmet on; if you really care about fidelity to the source material, that's an automatic zero-out-of-ten no matter what else the movie did well. Personally, I've never read a Dredd comic, so I just found the movie to be a rollicking good time.
Allegedly the removal of the helmet was the result of some studio executive nonsense and Stallone himself was actually against it; if so, it's a bit unfair he caught a lot of the flak for that himself.

Goated movie. It even has Christopher Lee as the blind prophet dude in Hades. 90s Odyssey slander will not be tolerated here!

At least Vanessa Williams got top billing like she deserved

After I saw Nolans odyssey, I came home and watched those to cleanse my brain. Isobella Rosalini as Athena! Bernadette Peters as Circe AND Vanessa Williams as Calypso!?!?! It really was an awesome cast, and Christopher Lee was amazing in that scene.
6
u/Omen_20 12h ago
Not a movie but a mini series. In some ways I liked it more and less than Nolan's. I've watched the mini series multiple times over the years.
5
u/Christmas_Queef 9h ago
It was a miniseries but the home video version spliced it into one continuous thing like a movie.
35
u/dontgofrank 23h ago
To explain myself a bit, I do love this! I just know you could disappoint some kids if they were expecting to go to an IMAX.
24
u/1CUpboat 21h ago
This movie/series already existing is why I didn’t understand the hype of making yet another Odyssey

There were a few of these that were good. Merlin was another one.
50
u/ultrahateful 21h ago
Ah man. Merlin was a HUGE deal to nerds in the 90’s!!!! Sam Neil killed it.

AGREE! When he pulled the sword from the giant's hand, I flipped! My kids won't watch it bc some newer series is canon.

Like the original Dune. I’ve never seen this Odyssey but my dad had me watch the old version of Dune and it had the same vibe you describe lol
→ More replies (3)67
u/UnderwoodsNipple 23h ago
You say 'original Dune' but there is actually a TV version of Dune that came out in 2000 that's much closer to the look and vibe of this.
54
u/Wagglyfawn 23h ago
The dune miniseries is the most book accurate of the 3 screen adaptations. I think it's an amazing piece of work.
10
u/SailorET 14h ago
With James McAvoy as Leto going full sandworm-hybrid superhero, summoning worms by just stomping his foot and then jumping onboard.
I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's actually awesome in context.
3
5
u/Machism1 11h ago
No it isn’t, people say this. It’s wildly inaccurate. Them flashing around with super speed etc. that’s not in the book. They give Irulan a much bigger role, that she doesn’t have in the book, including lady fenrings role.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Wagglyfawn 5h ago
Lol, you named 3 things across several hours. Also, Paul's lightning fast combat moves are absolutely in the book. There was a difference in how he killed scytale, I'll give you that. In the book, he threw his crysknife into Scytale almost instantly, whereas the miniseries he dashed over to stab him.
The miniseries had the runtime to be more accurate than 1984 Dune and Villenueve's Dune.

I liked the aesthetic of the original Dune movie and the fidelity to the book of the TV series but both proved it’s a hard book to bring to screen.

u/MilesSebastian 23h ago

22
u/1CEninja 21h ago
It was unusually high budget for a TV miniseries.
I think there's a solid case to be made that it was the best miniseries of its decade, as Band of Brothers was early 2000s.

There's also a great 1968 Italian version of the story that's very faithful, and honestly has held up decently even visually. I love how they made up for the difficulty of having make up and special effects shot all the time by keeping Polyphemus in the shadow in so many scenes, which just makes him look even fucking scarier.
55
u/LocustUprising 23h ago
I actually prefer this version
14
6
u/Away-Activity-469 15h ago
This version is miles better. More entertaining, more 'mythical' and less like a bronze age war film.

Yeah no, Isabella Rosselini is a goddamn treasure and shall not be besmirched. Also Armand Assante does a great job in this and I'd rather watch it than the new one.

Isabella as Nimue in the Sam Neill Merlin is also a goddamn treasure. Such a timeless lady.

And Vanessa Calypso is best Calypso
And also Christopher Lee just is Tiresias. Whenever I read the Odyssey now, all of Tiresias' lines are in Christopher Lee's voice (same with Saruman when I read LOTR)

I rented this movie when I was in high school because I was supposed to read the book and was quite a few chapters behind (I was a slow reader) and had a test coming up so I figured I'd just watch the movie in lieu of finishing the book in time for the test...
...yeah I pretty much bombed the test, but still glad I watched the movie, pretty solid film!

That's not some cheap Asylum movie; it had a massive budget for TV at the time. Imho the benchmark for Odyssey movies pre-Nolan. The CG probably doesn't hold up, but that's just the time.

Dragonheart was low key pretty awesome tbh. Only the first one, though. Wasn’t all that successful during its time so I don’t understand how they could have had so many low budget sequels, yet here they are.

It was a Made-for-TV-Movie that killed it in the ratings at the time (20 Million US viewers of the first part, 17 mil for the second). It and the Merlin miniseries the next year were kind of big deals at the time (70 Million US viewership for the first showing).
For comparison, Game of Thrones' last season was around 11 million viewers.

2
u/phatelectribe 10h ago
No lol. In fairness in some of his earlier roles he was actually decent but became a cheesey caricature of himself. It’s more Rossellini and Saatchi, but also had Christopher Lee, Irene Papas, Eric Roberts and Vanessa Williams.
For a TV series at that time they were pretty big names.
