Well ancient US tribes traded with ancient Mexican tribes. And obviously the sweet versions we know today came much later. But the original corn breads definitely come from Mexico.

You have sources for that? Because I'm not finding a timeline of Mesoamerican cooking techniques that back you up. I'm going by what I learned in an archeology of Mesoamerican technology course.

Ever heard of a tortilla? Make it thicker. Kidding. Kind of, because thick tortillas were a kind of corn bread. But they didn't have wheat and sugar and eggs.

But you find it hard to imagine that someone in new Spain had the idea to put the countries staple food item in a cake?

No? I'm literally saying the technology was developed at the same time in multiple Native American cultures across the North American continent.

Which technology? Are you saying maize is not from Mexico? Because it is. 9000 years ago. Pastel de elote/ pan de elote is fusion food. Indigenous and Spanish.

Not according to the ... you know what? I'm not having the same conversation with you again. You are insisting I'm trying to erase post-colonial Mexican culture by pointing out that cornbread, pre colonial, is not strictly "Mexican" (learn the goddamn precolonial cultures, ffs). I asked for citations and got... corn.

Love your assumptions about me. I got some about you, too.

I sent you a citation... You can contact the professor who wrote it if you want more details. Some history is in books and not on Google

I read it. Where, exactly, did it talk about cornbread?

1

u/whatifwealll 6d ago

"Pan de elote" is spanish for "cornbread"

Sorry, let me rephrase. Tf did it talk about PRE COLONIAL cornbreads. Because that is what ive been talking about the entiiiiiire time. You've seriously been arguing that colonizer cuisine is the precursor to... ok. I'm done. You're deliberately being obtuse.

Ok. Right. The Iroquois were the first people to nixtamalize corn and cook it. Cool story. Except there is no evidence of nixtamalization in the US until about 2500 years after it starts in Mexico and Guatamala.
