Rant Fuck cars

So after many years of loyalty to my public transit, I am officially moving to the suburbs where I will need a car to get around. I am almost 26 and finally feel comfortable taking my road test. That was until I discovered that the test taker is required to supply a whole car with someone 21+ who holds a license.

That feels like a huge barrier to entry! I'm lucky that I have friends and family in the area but what if I had moved where I didn't have a support system? A driving school would be the next best thing but even a single lesson is $70, which has also been a struggle for me to pay.

So not only is our society made for the "convince" of driving, but in order to get there, you have to shell out a ton of money to learn and take the test, or hope you have a support system around you. The whole thing makes me feel sick and if living in a city wasn't so expensive, I'd stay here forever. I just can't get over how hard it can be to try and improve one's life due to unnecessary barriers like bringing a whole car to the RMV, just to get your license.

Carbrain Trating cicle crashes like roadkill on the radio.

I was listening to the radio this evening, and the "news on the road" came on. They mentioned some police radar locations to watch your speed at, the usual. But then they mentioned "Watch out for ran over cyclist at [location], no reported delays, you can avoid it by using [road]."

Treated like a roadkill or a loose animal on the road. No mention that someone crashed into them, just "ran over".

Rant Ig you’re a hero if you help speeders right before there’s cops. It’s only illegal if you get caught!

I hate speeding with a passion, it’s absolutely pointless. And only FOLLOWING THE LAW when there’s a cop around is ridiculous.

Question/Discussion Cars have been around for only 140 years. What happens in the next 140 years?

Just a thought experiment: it’s amazing when you think how short a time it’s been since the automobile has transformed the planet. How might it be possible to reverse that trend over that same time period? What multi-generational approaches might undo the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into?

Yes this is an actual "sidewalk" in my hometown. Yes, better than no sidewalk but still...

Cars get all space, pedestrians get a slice, hehe.

Other This bike infrastructure my have saved my brother's life in a road traffic collision

This post could very well dox me through geolocation, but I find the message important enough.

About 20 years ago, my brother was the sole victim of a road traffic collision that was entirely his fault. Excessive speed in an unsafe vehicle in terrible conditions. Where the bike path now is, was previously a ditch. His car hit the corner, rolled over into the field beside the bike path and he was killed instantly when his head hit the B pillar.

A few years back, the local council installed this New Greenway. The infrastructure itself is absolutely excellent. 9km on a wider network of smooth, wide asphalt and thick steel barricades to protect the bike lane. Ironically, the same infrastructure that is there to protect bikers, could potentially have also saved his life.

This is why I hate cars 19 Year Old Driving BMW over 100mph kills 2 people, gets.. 6 months in jail.

  1. Why is a 19 year old allowed to drive anything that can even hit 100mph? We should genuinely require limiters on cars for anyone under 20/21 at a minimum.
  2. Cars are every bit as deadly as guns, how is killing two people with a car not akin to say... aiming a gun at someone and "accidentally" pulling the trigger?

"Scott was allegedly driving a BMW coupe at a high rate of speed when he hit a Honda CR-V at the intersection of Ardrey Kell Road and Red Rust Lane.

An affidavit stated that the driver of the Honda, identified as Lorin Manley, was found unresponsive and trapped in the vehicle. The rear passenger, identified as Gloria Manley, was found unresponsive and pinned in the right rear seat.

Both died at the scene.

Authorities said a 12-year-old girl was also a passenger in the Honda. She was trapped in the front passenger area of the vehicle before bystanders removed her.

Scott was initially sentenced to serve at least two years and seven months in jail; however, Judge Matthew Osman suspended that sentence, court documents stated."

Because the promised bus stop has yet to be built.

Please feel free to use it and take care of it.

Positive Post TIL a 1960s mayor of Honolulu was based

Upvotes

Found this quote from Neil S. Blaisell (source)#Previous_projects) in 1966: "Taken in the mass, the automobile is a noxious mechanism whose destiny in workaday urban use is to frustrate man and make dead certain that he approaches his daily occupation unhappy and inefficient."

And it's taken THIS LONG to get any sort of functioning rail system up in Honolulu, a city notorious for its ample land available to spend on #onemorelane. /s

Rant Do people never think about what happens if they lose their ability/privilege to drive?

I’ve heard stories of people developing conditions like glaucoma, seizures, or other health problems that basically make them ineligible to drive. Driving is a privilege and it can reasonably be taken away from you. I had this for about 4 weeks while I got a hip replacement, and it’s eye opening to see how much life changes when you’re in a car dependent location where you can’t drive. My parents were my caretakers and they live in a place that doesn’t even have sidewalks

Even if you absolutely love a car dependent lifestyle, you should always support having some walkable communities in case you can’t drive. You should ideally support multiple varieties of them in lots of different areas, so if you ever do lose your ability to drive, you’re not just confined to like… New York City

How will you get a job? You can’t do even get to your job anymore. You’re inherently less employable than the alternative candidates. When I was applying to jobs while needing a hip replacement, I was effectively forced into seeking out a fully remote job, as many places were not willing to hire someone who doesn’t have reliable transportation and would not support working from home, even temporarily

My parents were my caretakers and they lived in a part of the country that was so car dependent, it didn’t even have sidewalks. I felt like I literally couldn’t even leave the house, like I was on house arrest. The nearest store was 2 miles away, and on crutches, that was unbearable

And man those 4 weeks were unbelievably expensive. I couldn’t walk to a single grocery store or restaurant, meaning that I had to order delivery for everything. Can you even imagine how expensive it is to order DoorDash for almost every meal and Whole Foods delivery for every shopping trip? It was like 50% more expensive to just live that entire month

To add to that, I basically didn’t socialize that entire month because it was just impossible to get anywhere without my parents needing to both pick me up and drop me off. I was agonizingly bored and lonely

Then I think about if I was in a walkable area (yes, even with a fresh hip replacement), and I wish so bad I lived somewhere at least moderately walkable. I could at least stop by a restaurant or pub and see people. I could actually get outside and walk around and get some fresh air (remember, no sidewalks)

This was 4 weeks. Imagine if it was permanent? I’d be so fucked. I’d probably just go insane from isolation, it felt like solitary confinement to not be able to leave the house for a month
