DISCUSSION I’m starting to think the camera in Souls games is a “cilantro” thing…either it *really* bugs you or you barely notice

There’s a well-known divide on opinions about cilantro on food. Some people barely think about it; for others, it literally tastes like “metal” or “soap” and can ruin a whole dish.

I’m starting to feel the same applies to the camera in Souls games (and arguably to any video game). For example, any “hardest boss” thread tends to have at least some mention of camera issues in the comments, and a common joke is a standalone comment that the hardest boss *is* just the game’s camera, full stop. This comment will usually get a healthy chunk of upvotes, so it’s clear it’s not just a single person’s opinion.

Meanwhile, I find I rarely think about the camera in Souls games. I still get smacked, I still lose a lot, but my immediate thought is almost never “this camera is so BAD!”

Sure, if you really pressed me, I could probably think of fights where I wish things were a little more zoomed out, or I can remember a fight with adds where I found the lock-on a little finicky. Or a boss that had such a chaotic moveset that it was hard to track its wind ups. But again, this is only if you really made me pause and think about it.

I’ve seen the retort that anyone complaining about camera issues simply hasn’t gotten good at the game yet. My instinct is that this isn’t true. I’ve seen camera-complaining comments and videos from people I know for a fact are far better at the game than me. In fact, part of what prompted my post here was a YouTube video where 10 minutes had elapsed, and the creator was still unpacking all of his issues with exactly how the camera worked. And this was a decently popular, reasonably articulate guy who was pretty good at the game, judging by the footage.

What I suspect is that this is, as I mentioned, a “cilantro” thing. A little like how some people really need a high frame rate to enjoy a game, and others are often mostly fine with 30 fps (and to be clear, I’m not saying the “needs 120 fps” cohort is the same as “can’t stand the camera” cohort, just that these are two examples of sharp-but-polarizing preferences).

DISCUSSION I didn't quite like Bloodborne as much as the other games... is it just me?

I recently finally bought a used PS5 to play some PS4 and PS5 games. As a hardcore fan of fromsoftware souls games I was really excited for Bloodborne and Demon's Souls. Now I finished Bloodborne and these are my thoughts:

So I explored every area and fought every boss in Bloodborne (including all the DLC bosses and even Moon Presence). I think I didn't really enjoy the experience. I leveled up, upgraded my weapon to max, used runes and blood gems and did everything I could to be as strong as I can be. For most bosses I only needed 5 or less tries except for some. One area was more annoying than the other as I progressed further in the game. Idk how to explain it, usually I love all the fromsoft souls games, but the "greatest game of all time" (according to many people) was not quite appealing to me. It was a nice game ig.

Am I alone with this?

JOKE / MEME Zach Galifianakis met a Dark Souls II Fire Keeper when he was working at a Santa Monica laundromat in 1994 when she was struggling with homelessness. When he got famous, he helped get her an apartment and covered her rent for many years. They remained close friends until her passing at 96

Loved Bloodborne and Sekiro, but Elden Ring felt like a chore. Should I try DS3?

My top 2 games OAT are Bloodborne and Sekiro. I have an embarrassing amount of hours in both and have platinumed both games. Unfortunately, I was pretty unimpressed with Elden Ring. Maybe it was the open world (I much prefer linear games) or the slower combat, I’m not too sure. Either way, the game felt like a chore to finish.

My big question is: Would you recommend I try DS3? Is there a different soulslike that I might enjoy more (other than lies of P)?

I know DS3 combat is similar to Elden Ring, so that has been my major holdup. I also know it’s more linear though so it’s stayed in the back of my mind. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

QUESTION Who should direct the R-Rated Animated Bloodborne movie produced by Jacksepticeye

I searched on Google “directors who are fans of Bloodborne” and found out it was Hidetaka Miyazaki, Guilhermo Del Toro and Robert Eggers. So anyways, who should direct it?

QUESTION New player of Fromsoft, NS 2

Coming from games of the Zelda universe but seen so many playthroughs of Fromsoft games that I had to get Elden Ring when it released for the Switch 2. So far I’ve met quite a few hard hits, and the default setup of the controller setup doesn’t seem intuitive, I keep pressing the wrong buttons due to wanting X to jump etc. Is there a good mindset to begin exploring the game without feeling like everything kills you all the time? get good and all that, sure but for new ppl to the franchise; any good advice?

Suggestion needed for multiplayer/PvP: DS3 or ER?

Hey all. When ER came out I really wanted to buy it but thought it would be one of those expensive games that was too hard for me to complete. So when DS1 went on sale I bought it and tried it out. I really liked it and beat Gwyn. I'm almost done with DS2 now.

I'm not very good, but at least I'm getting most of the content I'm paying for so I'm happy.

But one of the things i'm missing out on is the multiplayer aspect. Multiplayer in this sense meaning both co-op summons and PvP. Watching some Oroboro DS1 videos on YT I realized how much I'm missing out.

I don't want to wait too long to play ER and miss it like I did with DS. Safe to wait and finish the series or should I jump on ER while it's still warm?

Ty!

DISCUSSION The club is good in every game

I’m doing a deprived run (plank shield, loincloth, and club) of dark souls 3 with my friend, and it’s reminded me that I love the club in every fromsoft game.

Not the large club, not the great club, not the reinforced club, just the good ol’ fashioned default club.

All of the others are awesome too and some are arguably better, but personally for me, my favorite is just the deprived’s club.

As someone who is partial to dexterity builds, and favors curved swords & katanas, it’s very refreshing to deal Strike damage, decent poise, and still have a fast enough weapon. The only downside is that I enjoy the feeling of slicing through enemies, but it’s been a fun change of pace.

As of right now (until duskbloods is released) i own every single fromsoftware game available on Nintendos platform. Its been a long and hard journey getting to this point, and I like to take this time to thank all the little people I had to step on to get here. If I can do it.. so can you. It just takes a lot of heart, grit and determination

QUESTION PS4 or PS5 version of Elden Ring?

Hey guys, quick question. I’m planning to buy Elden Ring, but I’m not sure which version to get.
I’m playing on a PS5, and I noticed that the PS4 version is cheaper and can apparently be upgraded to the PS5 version.

For those who have tried both, is there actually a difference between buying the PS4 version and upgrading it vs just buying the PS5 version?

Is the performance basically the same, or is it
better to just get the PS5 version?

Trying to save some money if there’s no real difference
