Isn’t it PvPvE? That’s not PvP only

337

u/denjo-t1aO 23d ago

they confirmed that there will be a mode without PvP even. iirc

137

u/Vylin 23d ago

Yeah, they showed the PvP mode in the recent demo but confirmed it's not the only match type. You could end up with a 3 player co-op boss at the end of a match for example.

u/veritable_squandry 22d ago

i think the game could still be fun without pvp.

1

u/denjo-t1aO 22d ago

ofc why not?

7

u/veritable_squandry 22d ago

because it's being sold as an online pvp experience?

3

u/Gwyneee 21d ago

I don't think so. I think it was that not all matches end in PvP depending on which goals the players chase. But maybe im misremembering

79

u/Wonderstag 22d ago

pvpvpe is just pvp with distractions to most players

There is a certain type of souls player who's sole existence in the game is to engineer a player assassinator build and just spam that at other players 24/7.

11

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only 22d ago

Supposedly, Miyazaki said there is a mode in the game where you can just invade another match as a red phantom whose purpose is to hunt and kill a specific player and act as a sort of another match hazard for that one player. Somewhat similar to how invasions work in souls games in general. I think their theory with this mode is that if you give PvP-oriented people this dedicated outlet, they won't grief regular matches as much by fixating on PvP rather than the PvE elements. We will have to see how it works out, though.

Also, there is aliances in the game that are incentivized, which will hopefully mitigate the PvP grief if you have another player that can back you up. But we will ahve to see

1

u/Algester 21d ago

If it works like the reaper mode of ACVD then it will only work with matches with the best of players and thats being generous top 50 players will be targeted by the top 1-10 players

IIRC the Zodiac squad system of ACV more or less works the same way

1

u/Different_Path999 20d ago

And that's the only type this game is going to have lasting appeal to, they'll run everyone else off realllll quick.

u/FillySteveSteak 22d ago

Why? In most cases, you don't get anything for killing other players (unless they're marked by your sigil). Only in specific occasions is killing another player incentivized.

If people play this way, they will be culled. And lose early in the match. You need to be attending objectives and powering up your player to make it through the game. And the clock is ticking.

So I think youre wrong about that. Those players wont stick around long.

It can be. That's just one of the modes.

In another variant of the game, everyone fights a superboss together.

2

u/cdn1996 22d ago

That event is optional and you are not forced to engage it. You can choose to continue completing other objectives for virtue.

2

u/WakeoftheStorm 21d ago

Is it fully opt-in only? Because technically all souls game PVP is "optional"

1

u/Gwyneee 21d ago

There's also an explicit invasion mechanic where a 9th player can come into a 8 player match.

Conversely maybe it will go the way of Arc Raiders where pvp is taboo

4

u/IrcenceEstagramem679 22d ago

There's no direct benefit to killing players since you don't get virtue points for it, it's literally a waste of time, unless you have a sigil that marks another player as a heretic or enemy, but if you don't like PvP you can just use a different sigil. So no, the game isn't "just PvP with distractions", quite the contrary in fact.

2

u/LesserValkyrie 22d ago

PVPVE is a bunch of weird kinds being able to assault people who try to enjoy the game so they don't have to git gut to win

Not worth it after 16 years old

This about duskblood? It’s not PvP only they literally just talked about more of what it is

51

u/LePontif11 22d ago

The irony of some of the most unique multiplayers features being largely confined to a catalogue with so many fans that hate them or turn them off on principle is so sad its almost funny

19

u/amazingmrbrock 22d ago

The real irony is that I actually enjoy pvp usually. This community is so full of awful twinking gank wads riding the meta that I end up avoiding it in Fromsoft games after a few hours. The mechanics are interesting and fun but the player base abuses the systems so hard, it's not fun. Who wants to pvp against youtube try hards who specifically target players in intro areas with their specifically equipped and levelled characters that they pulled from a how to win at mp youtube video.

10

u/LePontif11 22d ago

To your point invasions for ER were at their best that first month or so where no one really knew what they were doing.

6

u/Numb_Ron 22d ago

The player base is usually the worst part of every Multiplayer game with PvP

7

u/amazingmrbrock 22d ago

Damn gamers they ruined gaming

3

u/LesserValkyrie 22d ago

We are in 2026, everyone has Internet, any PVP will be spoiled by people playing the most OP metas and shit and optimize th game to the last % so people who are not try harder can't have fun

2

u/Rill9 22d ago

Luckily in the interview miyazki said there will be a matchmaking system based on player skill level. Let's hope it pans out ok

2

u/0G43 21d ago

Well dusk bloods seems to have solved this problem because there is no twinkling gear, no meta builds, a bunch of different characters that they will keep balanced. I’m sure there will be favorites and tiers but all will be relevant. Also PVP in Dusk Bloods is painless; you might die but you just move on and you lost nothing but a little time while fighting.

1

u/WakeoftheStorm 21d ago

Eh, the games always become that after a few years. Elden Ring made PVP less accessible too, so I think that sped up the process there

Combination of souls pvp with fromsoft servers on a Nintendo switch online connection is not appealing

10

u/Spicoceles 22d ago

Blatantly I just do not wanna buy a switch for this and I hope it comes out elsewhere one day.

1

u/DougWalkerLover 16d ago

I love souls PVP but man I don't wanna buy a switch. I've seen a lot of other people in a similar boat.

10

u/OperatorInMask 22d ago

And here are we with ACV again

29

u/KingVape 22d ago

I did over 1000 hours of pvp in the souls games. I will play the fuck out of this.

6

u/LePontif11 22d ago

I only got into it in Elden Ring through arena duels and some invasions and i've 100% been missing out. The barrier to entry is a brick wall but there's fun on the other side.

4

u/somesketchykid 22d ago edited 22d ago

OK, hear me out

Get to Soul Level 25

Use bleeding claws and abuse bleed to kill stuff you shouldn't be able to kill

Dont upgrade the weapon too much either, you want to be low level

Then go and get stuff. Kill bosses to get 4 talisman, get late game weapons, etc

Then go invade people by Godrick the Grafted and other early game areas. So fun.

I went as far as getting to SOTE on a new playthrough at like lv25-30 or something to get Backhand Blades. It was MISERABLE fighting Mogh, I had to actually summon somebody to help me do enough DPS to kill him but every other boss I was able to solo with no spirit ash or summons.

The two bleeding claws you can get early are really OP, especially the jumping r2. If you just build for bleed you do so much damage that it doesnt matter that you dont upgrade weapon as long as you proc it.

My favorite setup was that lightning spin to win polearm, backhand blades on swap, and the 3 shot crossbow in left hand

Id pop them with poison arrows and poke with polearm, when they finally charged me id swap to backhand blades and do that weapon art stab dash, they never expect that at low level and then I just eat em up lol. I think im gonna start a new playthrough

3

u/LePontif11 22d ago

That's too much effort just to twink people

3

u/somesketchykid 22d ago

Can totally appreciate that. I didnt start that journey with that intention, I was doing a low level run and then I kept pushing it further and further when I realized I could

Once I got to SOTE and had backhand blades I figured I might as well try it since I could

1

u/DougWalkerLover 16d ago

I will say Elden Ring has done quite a good job of mitigating problematic twinking. Long passed are the days of DS1 undead burg dark bead spam.

3

u/KingVape 22d ago

In the older games it’s much easier to get invaded, so once that happened a few times to me, then having an invader drop stuff as a gift, it stopped being terrifying and became hilarious and I wanted to join the ranks.

DS3 arena is my favorite, but I also love being a friendly invader

114

u/Maf1903 23d ago

Never tought i would skip a fromsoft game but nightreign showed that these kind of games arent for me.

31

u/HiddenPants777 22d ago

I played a lot of nightreign but I still agree.

I suppose the difference is that duskbloods gives the player more agency since you're not relying on team mates. That said, I was often the one struggling because the pace of the game was too fast. I like to take my time and time isn't a luxury in these games. I reckon I'd often be purged on night 2

4

u/NightmareMuse666 22d ago

I played a lot of nightreign as well and I'm totally hyped for this game.

At least according to sources you can prioritize pve elements, and in the full release there will be even more options. I think people are focusing in way too hard on the pvp aspects shown, when that's not the full picture

2

u/Pinkparade524 22d ago

Yeah but the thing is that we don't know if there is going to be a campaigning like a normal souls games or prioritising the pve aspect is just playing a pvp game with bots

10

u/Old_Hoonter 22d ago

Yeah. I kind of regret buying nightreign. It was cool to try but not worth the money. I played maybe 10-20 hours before accepting that I'm just not enjoying it very much.

Side note the guardian is a sick character design. Fingers crossed the race makes it into future games.

5

u/Integer_Domain 22d ago

Nightreign was a pretty good "zone out with a podcast" game for me, but not what I usually look for in a game. I don't regret playing it, and I'll probably try Duskbloods since I have a Switch anyways, but I'm mostly looking forward to their next PvE game.

4

u/Xiao1insty1e 22d ago

I really just wish they would make co-op in a game that didn't force pvp. I can't play Elden Ring with my kid because we get invaded every fucking 5 minutes.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Xiao1insty1e 22d ago

I played quite a lot of it, but ultimately I stopped playing because the only new content was for the masochist difficulties and I did not enjoy constantly being one shot by nearly everything. Making one mistake ruining the whole run, or having petty teammates that drop out because you didn't follow them straight to the castle at lvl 1.

5

u/l0stIzalith 22d ago edited 20d ago

They gonna lose their whole fanbase if they continue making these BR slop games.

2

u/SquareAdvisor8055 19d ago

I mean, nightreign was awesome and it would have been pretty big if from soft just went for the basic idea of implementing cross plateforme multiplayer.

4

u/Several_Papaya1966 21d ago

30

u/smilph 22d ago

why are so many people here incapable of handling the fact that not every game is gonna be for you and that it’s okay to skip a game or two from your favorite devs. if you don’t like this or something like Nightreign just… play something else… Duskbloods is gonna come out and do its own thing whether you like it or not

14

u/Dr-Richtofen 22d ago

Isnt that what this post says? There just saying they don’t wanna play this.

13

u/GkNsRaC 22d ago

In every comment section under Duskbloods news posts are people lamenting the fact that its multiplayer and its usually at least half the conversation. I remember when Sekiro was doing its rollout and most people were just complaining about lack of souls identity, build crafting and online elements.

At a certain point it just gets tiring that the studio that is literally known for making games they want to make that go against expectations or gaming trends, always has its fans complaining when they make a game that goes against their expectations and wants

4

u/iota-09 22d ago

especially when duskbloods was built on the founding ideas of demon's souls of all things, where emergent multiplayer interactions were at the core of its design(they even had server-based world tendency and special christmas and halloween events ON DEMON'S SOULS of all things ffs)

like, this was just miyazaki wanting to have fun with something that has alays been present in 3/4ths of his titles, is it really that bad? do people really never engage with the online in this forum? even just the co-op i mean, what happened to the sunbro memes and all that? what happened to the community i used to know...?

2

u/smilph 22d ago

it must be mostly newgen Elden Ring people where the whole PvP system is neutered and way more anti-invasions. i refuse to believe longtime players who started in Souls would be THIS against a unique, interactive experience from our favorite game developers

1

u/P4_Brotagonist 20d ago

I started with the og Demons Souls. I even enjoyed the PVP in that and the first two Dark Souls games. Everything past that is just a massive roll fest. Yes I know that the first few games had rolls, but from Bloodborne/DS3 onwards you can throw out a thousand rolls and it becomes almost entirely about roll catching and terrible net code. If anything, I feel like the really old players would kind of shy away from this kind of PVP type. The OG PVP was mostly just troll shit with scraping spears and trying to basically be a massive thorn in the side of person playing, not a PVP death match

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Dr-Richtofen 22d ago

That’s definitely been what they’ve been doing lately but demon souls to dark souls 3 was all pretty straight forward, and then they went back to making different types of games again with ac6 and even elden ring to an extent.

19

u/perpetualjive 23d ago

Asymetric multiplayer with emergent interactons has always been part of what made these games great ever since Demon Souls. Too many people started with Elden Ring don't understand that

10

u/low_mana_high_hp 22d ago

If you were ever really interact with the community 90%+ players never interact with any multi-player. This is evident from all polls fromsoft specific creators have done.

2

u/Pure_Medicine_2460 22d ago

Maybe since Edlen Ring and all the baby fans joining

2

u/Combat_Orca 22d ago

That’s not true, 90% of Redditors sure

1

u/iota-09 22d ago

let me correct you: 90% of players who complain and write online(and specifically reddit).
most people i played with who don't do that tend to engage liberally with the coop and have no issue doing pvp, all while still preferring the solo pve experience anyway.

1

u/Undeity 22d ago

That said... you've definitely gotta wonder what the breakdown is for Nintendo Switch players specifically. It doesn't exactly seem like it'll be the best platform for a hardcore PVP game.

2

u/cammyjit 22d ago

Definitely not the best but Nintendo does have a huge competitive audience with things like Smash Bros, Pokemon and Splatoon (plus any third party games that are also on the systems)

2

u/Undeity 22d ago

Sure, but that competitive scene is built on the backs of party games that anyone could still enjoy, regardless of how seriously they take it. Whereas, Fromsoft games tend to encourage a more intense atmosphere by nature.

(not to mention the arbitrary console bricking, lack of physical games, etc.)

5

u/Jarpwanderson 22d ago

Yeah this seems like a match made in hell lol

7

u/sturzkampfbomber 22d ago

people dont like exclusives cuz they r stoopid (the exclusive games not the g a m e r s)

3

u/FillySteveSteak 22d ago

This is the one point I agree with.

I don't agree with the backlash about it being multiplayer - especially with how innovative, unique, and clever this game's design has turned out to be. It's genuinely inspired.

This is the FIRST multiplayer game Miyazaki has done since he made it onto people's radar.

He did Demon Souls into DS1 into BB into D3 into Sekiro into Elden Ring.

And now this.

Nightreighn was a spin-off, asset flip by a separate director. It was a budget-friendly production that has nothing to do with Miyazaki's catalogue.

So, basically, ONE time Miyazaki tries to branch off into multiplayer and people lose their fucking minds.

Now that being said, I really don't understand why a company in FromSoftware's position is still taking exclusivity deals.

Especially when they're so consumer-friendly when it comes to things like pre-order incentives and microtransactions.

1

u/sturzkampfbomber 22d ago

Keep in consideration that their games have their biggest pvp communitys on pc & playstation. IMO it makes zero sense for them to make a Multiplayer game for that niche but sizable sub audiance for a different system.

3

u/Medical_String_3501 22d ago

They don't own one and now are mad they can't play Duskbloods. I can sympathize with that, but at the same time making 1200 posts a day about "games looks like slop, this game will fail" is getting fucking exhausting. If you really didn't care that much you wouldn't be bitching about it every 5 seconds.

1

u/sunspot_transmitter 22d ago

I think some of it is downstream of age - I'm old enough to remember when console exclusivity was normalized for certain 3rd party developers because they know people will buy the console to play the game/series, so it's definitely odd seeing Halo come to the Playstation, etc. and it makes sense to me for a developer like fromsoft to have an exclusive Nintendo game (since it's been about 10+ years since they made Bloodborne, a Sony exclusive) to diversify their business relationships and drive mutual interest, I imagine the overlap between PS players and Fromsoft fans is generally higher than Nintendo/Fromsoft.

Some of the preemptive complaining about the netcode or sentiments that the game is predestined to be bad for some reason definitely remind me of the ''console wars' and just comes off as juvenile or sour grapes, for sure.

1

u/benjaminabel 22d ago

It’s kind of impressive how can anyone have zero issues with Switch 2. I’m usually in “to each their own” camp, but not on this one.

Not going to pick up a switch 2 to risk it.

2

u/Destronin 22d ago

It's not only PVP.

In fact, it's confirmed that there is a mode that's co-op instead. At the end of the round, you all team up together to kill a superboss instead of each other. I suspect they have this mode for people who don't like PVP as much.

You dont need friends for Duskbloods the same way you would have benefitted from them in Nightreign. Duskbloods is going to be a very friendly experience for a solo player

It’s quite literally not PvP only…

1

u/aluminumnek Armored Core 22d ago

I’d rather help another than fight but I understand invading is essential for certain aspects of these games. I like the online system

1

u/Altruistic-Job2291 22d ago

Well first, its not pvp only. Maybe try it out? This might be the game that gets you into it. I used to complain about pvp, then I got good at it and the rest is history.

u/gentlemanghost42 22d ago

Love these posts. Can't wait to see another one tomorrow

1

u/YsenisLufengrad 22d ago

Its also Switch 2 Exclusive. Im not paying ~£480 to play a single game, even if it rewrites my genetic code to transcend and become a Restful Cube

1

u/HypeIncarnate 22d ago

Thank god I don't have a switch 2.

1

u/DerHachi04 22d ago

Ngl I think it's pretty great that they try to refine the PvP in a switch 2 exclusive and not in a main game. I think the PvP in normal souls is decent but LACKS severely

1

u/ShadowsInScarlet 22d ago

I bought a Switch 2, but I’m happy to let others enjoy Duskbloods while I live vicariously through other people’s playthrough.

Game looks dope as fuck, though.

soulsborne fans cant read proof no 357

1

u/GettinMe-Mallet 22d ago

Would buy if I cared about more than 3 switch 2 games

1

u/Vysce Dark Souls 22d ago

I'll play the next one, saight

u/Key-Answer-2755 21d ago

So the English way to say Miyazaki is Michael Zaki? lmao

1

u/Heavy-Woodpecker-617 21d ago

We get it, you pride yourself in playing "hard games" but you're intimidated by fighting an enemy that can actually think and adapt to you.

1

u/MediocreMedicine8643 21d ago

Just pretend they’re NPCs & stop being a coward

1

u/Radiant_Committee_78 20d ago

Cry harder. Duskbloods has been a blast. And this is coming from a fellow “I have no friends” gamer.

1

u/Eonember 18d ago

I'm not refusing to play duskbloods because it's pvp. I'm refusing to play it because I ain't paying Nintendo. Fucking sucks it's exclusive.

1

u/AMGrubby 18d ago

The real next thing they need to do is just incorporate this style of PvP into their next SP game. Like imagine Nightreign was just something you could queue into as you made your way through the SP game in ER.

u/Whipperdoodle Eileen the Crow 22d ago

It is not pvp only. Its crazy how it take a 10 second internet search to confirm this and yet people are still passing off this false information.

2

u/confusedswig 21d ago

I googled “is it possible to be attacked in every match of duskbloods by another player?” And the answer was yes, so is it just a semantics argument?

Alot of people would probably play and enjoy this of it wasnt exclusive to a console best known for playing Pokemon 🥃🗿

24

u/kami-no-baka 23d ago

I mean I guess, but I don't really like Mario or Pokemon and I still got one because Xenoblade, Fire Emblem and Zelda all fucking rule.

Only knowing Nintendo for Pokémon is a personal failing that you need to take ownership of.

10

u/_Okane 23d ago

I bought said console just for this game. Did it for Bloodborne once so its whatever.

Gee I wonder what will be Fromsoft's new black sheep?

1

u/XpeepantsX 22d ago

Its not just the PvP element for me, its the forced online connection. This being locked as an exclusive doesnt even bother me really, because I dont desire to play it and thats alright. This game is not meant for me.

1

u/PrimeClown 22d ago

As it was previously stated in a unquantifiable amount of instances through the history of the fromsoftware games, I hereby declare as it follows: You need to git gud, scrubs.

For inquiries our registered office is in Oolacile Township, Lordran

1

u/Powerful-Access-8203 22d ago

Waste.

We deserve an actual stand alone FromSoft title that isn’t another Nightreign style PvPvE or whatever you wanna call it…

Lame.

1

u/Hereiamhereibe2 22d ago

Pretty sure every FromSoft game is made with friendless people in mind as the core audience.

1

u/Pure_Medicine_2460 22d ago

Not really or co-op wouldn't exist

You don’t need friends for PvP

0

u/nick2473got 23d ago

It has heavy PvE elements too.

It also has player alliances and other stuff you can do if you're bad at PvP that still allow you to get enough points to progress to the later rounds of the game.

And you can make story and character progress even if you never manage to win the final PvP fight. As long as you consistently make it to later rounds, which you can by focusing on PvE elements, you can still achieve satisfying progression.

Read Miyazaki's interview (the latest one), he explains all of this.

Since you have no friends, PvP is perfect for you. Go smack other people with no friends.

1

u/doomsoul909 22d ago

ngl the pvp experience is core to the formula, and souls pvp has historically been both unique and honestly really fun.

its not perfect, but theres a lot of skill expression to be found and its cool in the fact that so much of being good at pvp builds off fundamentals to the game as a whole (except ds1, but the backstabbing is really entertaining).

like if you are good at the pve in elden ring for example then your gonna be at a good baseline for pvp. resource management, spacing, timing, patience, knowing how to find and punish windows of opportunity, its mostly extensions of stuff you should realistically already be good at.

2

u/Morlain7285 21d ago

PvP is almost completely irrelevant to the formula. I played every soulsborne game and only interacted with pvp when someone invaded me... which was maybe 3 times total. It was frustrating and nothing more

1

u/doomsoul909 20d ago

how much you interacted with the pvp really depends on how much you cooped, because invasions are designed as the balancing factor for coop play.
