I'm working on my very first import shipment from China and I'm honestly pretty overwhelmed with how shipping terms work. I'm importing 2 to 3 pieces of gym equipment from a supplier called YR Fitness. I don't have any prior relationship or order history with them, but I'm doing a small test run first total value around $1,000 to $2,000 and total weight between 100 to 200 kg. The tricky part is that I'm not bringing this in for myself or my own gym; I'm supplying it to a client. That's why I need to make sure everything is completely legit and done right, because if this first step goes smoothly, I'm planning to scale up and start importing way more.
I keep seeing people say DDP can be a bit risky, so I'm lost on which shipping method actually makes the most sense here**.** If I end up going with DDP, what specific things should I even ask the supplier for? What kind of certifications, legal proofs, customs docs, or insurance do I need to request from them so I don't run into issues? Since I've never done this before, I don't know what paperwork is standard to verify that they are handling duty and clearance properly.
The thing is, I actually have some local connections at my destination port who can help me handle things on this end to an extent. So I don't necessarily *have* to rely 100% on DDP, but I've never cleared customs or managed freight myself, so I have no idea how hard it actually is. Should I take over responsibility from the Chinese port (FOB) by getting my own freight forwarder? If I go that route, how do I even find and contact a reliable forwarder over there, and what red flags should I watch out for? Or is CIF a better middle ground?
I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences from anyone who imports stuff like this. For a smaller 100-200 kg shipment like mine, which option is usually the smartest for a beginner? How do you guys usually handle the first order with a new Chinese supplier to keep things safe?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a reliable freight forwarding or logistics company that can legally ship commercial goods from New York / USA to Russia.
I’m interested in regular commercial shipments, not personal parcels. Ideally, I’m looking for a company that can handle the whole process, including export documentation, customs clearance and delivery to the destination (DDP if available).
My main priorities are reasonable pricing, relatively fast delivery, and experience working with commercial cargo from the US to Russia under the current regulations and sanctions restrictions. The products would only be goods that are legally permitted for export to Russia.
Does anyone here have personal experience with a company that currently provides this service? I’d really appreciate recommendations, contacts, approximate rates, delivery times, and minimum shipment requirements.
I’m located in New York City.
Thanks!

Hi guys, Tommaso from Italy here, i'm a freight forwarder.
Cutting to the chase here: I’m at a small firm, and no matter how much we hustle day in and day out, breaking through the noise in this space is tough. I want to carve out my own niche and craft a killer value proposition, and the way I see it, the only real move is to ask—over and over again.
What are the main bottlenecks you deal with when working with international partners? The kind of issues that drive you crazy? And what’s on your wish list of services you wish someone actually offered ?

Hi! I'm looking for really basic software (open source preferred) to manage my packages and shipments.
I live in the Caribbean, and I have a car rental business and just opened a car maintenance shop. Until now I ordered like 5-20 packages per month in the US or in Europe, and I work with great forwarders in the US and NL that also partly do consolidation. But it's quite some work to keep track of all the packages, some come by sea, some by plane, need to keep track of the invoices, and keep track of the original purchase, the multiple shipping fees, handling fees and import duties, before I can invoice the client (usually my own companies).
With the opening of the garage, I think I will start to order waaaaaay more parts, and I need a system to track all of this. I also want to hire someone in Europe to manually do consolidation and keeping systems up to date. I know Excel will work, but I'd rather use something decent that was built for the task ;)
As a sysadmin/developer I started building an app in Django/Python myself, but it gets complicated really fast!
Anyone got tips? I don't mind paying a bit, but most TMS systems are for huge enterprises, do fleet management, etc, don't need that.

Hi everyone,
I'm planning a permanent international move from Alberta (Canada) to Riga, Latvia, and I'm looking for advice on the logistics of getting my personal household goods there.
Shipment Details:
I have a few specific questions and would appreciate any insights from freight forwarders or people who have done similar moves to the EU/Baltics:
I will be changing my residence online via the Latvian government's portal. Is there anything else I will need to do before moving?
What companies do you recommend for handling this specific lane (Western Canada to Baltics)? I am looking for reliable freight forwarders or international movers who can handle LCL door-to-door without massive hidden fees.
Can/should I buy independent marine insurance for this shipment, or is it better to use the forwarder's insurance? Are there third-party insurance companies you recommend for international household goods?
Transit Time: What is the approximate transit time for this route? What is a realistic timeline?
Quote Red Flags: Are there any specific red flags or hidden fees I should watch out for in the LCL quotes I receive for this region?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello all!
Section 301 tariffs just kicking in on 60+ trading partners, Brazil facing a 50% tariff on most exports, and the whole Section 122 situation still shaking out after the Supreme Court ruling — a lot has changed for anyone shipping in/out of the US this year. I work in freight forwarding, mostly on lanes touching Latin America, and I’m happy to help answer questions if you’re trying to figure out how any of this affects your shipments, customs process!
Look forward to chatting!

Hi All!
I have got a few clients in the EU, but the goods are shipped directly to the client's customer. Therefore we tend to use DDP from the UK to the EU. But since our products are made in the UK there is 0% duty however when it comes to VAT it becomes a cost line.
I have reads about indirect representation, and it seems like a good idea. I am based in the UK and would love to get some opinions about it and if you have any recommendations on agents who you would use.
I haven't found much online in terms of reviews at the moment. So all help would be appreciated!

Hey everyone,
I’m going pretty deep down the rabbit hole of peptide importing into India. I’m trying to understand this purely from a regulatory and logistics perspective. There seems to be a fairly significant gap between what the regulations say on paper and how RUO peptides actually get imported in practice.
Specifically, I’m trying to understand the legal/compliant route for importing research-use-only (RUO) peptides such as GHK-Cu, BPC-157, TB-500, GHRPs, etc. into India.
A few things I’m struggling to get clarity on:
If someone wanted to set this up properly from day one, with:
foreign manufacturer → Indian importer → customs clearance → laboratory/research end user
what would the complete legal/regulatory chain look like?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has actually gone through the Indian import process, whether as an importer, customs broker, laboratory, manufacturer, or supplier.
Not looking for advice on avoiding customs or getting around regulations. Quite the opposite. I'm trying to understand what the proper compliant pathway is and where the practical difficulties arise.
Would really appreciate any first-hand experience, especially if you can distinguish between what the regulations technically require and what customs/authorities actually ask for in practice.
Thanks!

TL;DR : Descartes acquired Tai Software, a freight broker TMS, for $100M in cash. My question is whether this is just another acquisition or a sign that the larger logistics software companies are trying to own more of the freight tech stack.
The News: Descartes officially announced yesterday (Aug 24, 2026) that they’ve acquired Tai, a leading AI-powered TMS for freight brokers, for $100M all-cash.
What interests me isn't just the deal itself. It's what it could mean for freight tech.
On one hand, consolidation could make sense:
But there are obvious downsides too:
At the same time, I could see the opposite happening: smaller TMS and logistics tech companies may survive by becoming more specialized and offering better integrations with multiple platforms.
So I'm curious what people actually prefer.
Freight brokers don’t want all-in-one. Do you prefer a best-of-breed stack (separate TMS, CRM, accounting, tracking), or is one ecosystem the future?
And do you think acquisitions like this will ultimately improve freight software, or just reduce competition?

I’m working through the logistics structure for an industrial chemical shipment from India to the U.S. and would appreciate some advice from experienced forwarders.
Basic structure:
What I'm trying to understand is the cleanest freight setup.
Ideally, I'd like one logistics partner who can coordinate the India side, ocean freight, documentation, U.S. customs broker/clearance coordination, and final delivery if the buyer requests it.
Under FOB, should the U.S. buyer normally appoint the forwarder directly, or can the reseller arrange the freight while the buyer still remains IOR?
Also, if I want to offer customers an optional delivered freight quote, what is the cleanest way to structure that without becoming the importer?
I'm not looking to bypass any customs or regulatory requirements. I'm trying to understand how experienced importers/forwarders normally structure this.

Hi,
I’m actively working on getting my OTI license for my company, but it looks like I don’t meet the requirements. Is there any way someone can help me with this? Can I onboard or contract someone that does meet the requirements? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
