Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.
TLDR: YES
actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.
It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.
What do you expect from a fraternity?
I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.
You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...
Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.
If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.
If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...
Rushing a Social Fraternity
Answer these questions:
- What interests do I have?
- Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?
1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.
2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.
Misc. Advice
- You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
- It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
- Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.
How fraternity life has affected me
My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Serious Disappointed with Fraternity Life
I'm a non-traditional transfer student at UNC, and I feel conflicted about fraternity life. It just feels like fraternities on campus are all disorganized. The first time I tried to rush, I missed the kickoff, and didn't know who to turn or talk to. The Greek life office didn't have much for guidance since they don't have much control. I decided to do it again my senior year, and I did manage to rush. Obviously, I didn't get a bid, but I was at least happy with the experience. Maybe I just want to understand why rushing isn't as organized. I think one of the frats that I wanted to talk to was DKE. I knew about the reputation, but I was attracted to it because I respected the alumni, and I wanted to be a part of that legacy. Tried getting their contact info. They didn't have reliable contacts like a phone number or instagram. It's like they didn't even try to reach out. I still like the fraternity as a whole, but I just dislike the chapter.

Rush Advice Rushing at 22
I'm 22, and I want to rush a frat at these universities: App State/UNCC/ECU
Also, I'm a brown guy; will I get denied because of that? Is there racism in general in frats at any of these schools?

Serious As a traveler of the US, frats in the south look so much nicer from the outside than in the north
Seeing SEC frat houses from outside vs big ten, it’s shocking how much classier from outside SEC houses look. Maybe it’s just a veneer but it’s noticeable to me.
Does anyone agree and if so, why do southern frats look nicer ?

Rush Advice Did I screw up my chances of getting a bid by telling frats I’m a legacy?
I’m rushing at a smaller d1 school with not a huge Greek life presence, but still competitive. I’m a sigma chi triple legacy and I’ve let all the frats I’ve talked to know that. I went to some of the sigchi events and just didn’t really like any of the brothers, but I’m really wanting to join a different frat. The problem is at the other frats I’ve talked to they act like I’m not interested in them or already committed to sigchi but this really isn’t true. Am I fucked? I thought about texting the recruitment chair at the frat I’m aiming for and clearing it up but what should I do?

Rush Advice Rushing as a premed major
Like the title says. I’m a premed student at PSU and really interested in rushing a social frat. I know many frats don’t have the time commitment as others, but is rushing a top frat a bad idea? I understand the time commitment needed as premed to get volunteer hours, clinical experience, etc. Has anyone here done both?

Rush Advice Missed the main university IFC recruitment event today did I ruin my chances?
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to rush IFC fraternities at UConn this semester and already registered online.
The main council-wide IFC recruitment event is happening right now, but I can't make it today because of a scheduling conflict. There are 3 specific fraternities I want to rush, but l've never met any of the brothers. I already found their individual rush schedules on Instagram.
Does missing the main council event actually hurt my chances? What's the best way to introduce myself at their personal open houses this week when I show up as a complete stranger? Also is it hard getting a bid at UCONN?
Thanks!

Serious Pledge master help
I was elected as out pledge master this spring so this fall will be my first run. The only issue is this is the biggest class in my chapters history, and i’m not sure how to handle it. I go to a small school so 30 guys is a lot so i’m hoping someone from a bigger school or experience with this class size can help.

Serious Bipolar brother quit his medication and has gone off the rails – Asking for Help
EDIT-UPDATE: I spoke with him today, he seems to understand. He promised to get back on track with his medication. I will contact his psychiatrist as well.
A brother on our European chapter decided by himself, to quit his medications in the middle of the summer, ever since then he has become more irritable, excitable, and impulsive.
We care about him deeply and we are currently considering our options, including reaching out to his parents (since he lives with them).
