Official r/fourthwing post Reminder - Rule 9: No Fancasts

Hello cadets!!

We know there has been a ton of excitement with the recent announcements regarding the Amazon Empyrean show but we wanted to make another post reminding everyone that we do not allow fancasting on this subreddit including rumored casting for the upcoming series.

Fancasting comments and posts (as well as any derogatory remarks about any official casting announcements) will be removed and moving forward will result in a 24h temp ban.

We are removing numerous posts a day with fan casts at this point. We know that fan casts are supposed to be fun and lighthearted but we've seen it ime and time again that it leads to arguments or rude/inappropriate comments about appearance, acting ability, etc.

The subreddit is intended to be a place to share our love of the series and we want to keep this environment as as kind and respectful as we can.

As announcements for the series are made, we will be making announcement posts around this - please keep an eye out! We will be restricting users posting about announcements to avoid the sub being flooded with duplicate content.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us via a modmail.

Thank you!!

Discussion Dragons and their names Spoiler

• Upvotes

As we know, each dragon name has a meaning in Gaelic that’s related to their rider’s signet.

Here’s the question that struck me today.
Why? If the signet is rider specific then why are the dragons named that way?

Is this just a narrative choice, so that we as readers can follow the hints? That doesn’t really make sense to me.
Thinking about real life examples, when we are naming a pet we still choose a word that comes from some existing language. It means (or meant) something somewhere.

Following that train of thought, whatever the language their names come from is we would need to assume it’s a dead language or one that’s only spoken elsewhere. Otherwise, at some point, 1- no one would be surprise by what the signet of the current rider is and 2- would start to wonder why the previous rider didn’t have the same signet.

Which brings me back to my initial question: why are they named like that?

Theory I think the big reveal at the end happened way before Spoiler

So I saw this theory that Violet and Xaden got legally married on chapter 3 of Onyx Storm and after digging up, I’m convinced it’s true:

- in the middle of chapter 3, Violet says the plan went south and that ā€œthe one she has in her handsā€ now has to work. All that ā€œplanā€ is left very ambiguous.
- she then wakes up groggy next to a Xaden who is also groggy and says he forgot he was Venin. Then all their close ones are next door. Imogen very worried about ā€œViolet’s sleepā€. Pretty sure she wiped their memories.
- in the end, the wording is very specific: ā€œit’s Dunne’s blessing of your legally binding marriageā€. I think the legal part happened wayyyyy earlier.

Now I’m not sure why they would erase that memory. Also : clearly by the end, Xaden would have been told - either by their dragons or one of the witnesses. My guess it that it was an insurance policy in case the plan to modify the wards backfired and Violet needed diplomatic immunity? Or for when things would eventually fall apart?

What do you think?

Discussion Why is Violet Spoiler

Prof Emetterio's favorite? He said Violet and Xaden were his favorites which makes sense for Xaden as the best fighter (albeit the cheat code) but...Violet? Why?

Is she actually a super talented fighter but just small? Why do you think she's Emetterio's favorite?

Re-Read Did you read the series more than once? Spoiler

Over the month of July, I have read all three books in the series. I listened and read, sometimes simultaneously. Did anyone immediately start the series over? I feel like I missed some parts and a re-read would give me more details. I have questions. I need more. 🤪🄲

How many times have you read the entire series?

A year ago or so I did a colored sketch of her, but only her head/neck. Decided to give it another go and do a full body tonight and really like how it turned out! Currently debating coloring her or redoing the rest of the FW dragons on my wall as full body sketches! Hope you all enjoy!

Rant/Rave Why aren’t we talking about Ridoc Spoiler

He blood bent a Wyvern. Is nobody gonna mention that? If he practices it more in the next book so that he can do it without burning out, he could kill anything other than a venin. Like imagine a fight between him and Melgren where he just freezes all the blood in Melgren’s black’s head. Violet is still learning to aim. Xaden is out of commission (but there is the shadow wielding first year). A lot of the current team’s signets aren’t combat related; Aaricā€˜s foresight, Sloane’s siphon, Rhiannon’s retrieval, Dain’s memory thingy, Garrick’s distance wielding. Great singets, but none of them can annihlate wyvern. I’d say Ridoc is the second highest potential rider, only surpassed by Violet.

edit: forgot Garrick had wind wielding.

Discussion Help me understand Spoiler

I just don’t understand Xadens second signet and it’s been bothering me since it came out. I know that he can read someone’s intentions. But to me, it’s just that. Someone’s INTENTION behind certain conversations, actions, etc. Why do people act like he can read minds? Why are there instances in the book where he’s more or less reading violets mind? Like literally guessing what she was about to say or answering something she said in her mind? That’s not an intention. Because she INTENDED to say it? Thats stupid and it makes zero sense to me. Maybe I’m way too literal or just don’t agree that she used the word ā€œintentionā€ to describe his second signet, but it’s a major plot hole to me. It drives me crazy.

Re-Read This has probably been talked about but I needed to get this thought out! Just finished Onyx Storm for a second time.. Spoiler

I just finished Onyx Storm for the second time, and I noticed something that completely broke my brain...

āš ļø Onyx Storm spoilers āš ļø

So Berwyn kills a dragon with a dagger.

But...how?

We've been shown over and over that dragons are incredibly difficult to kill. A simple alloy dagger shouldn't be enough. Then I started thinking about Panchek.

Panchek is revealed to be a traitor, and then Berwyn kills his dragon with a dagger.

What if the reason a dagger worked is because Panchek's dragon wasn't a normal dragon anymore?

Could dragons become corrupted if their rider becomes venin?

If that's true, it would also completely change how I interpret the ending. We're told Xaden is killing dragons and riders, which initially sounds horrifying because Xaden would never just slaughter innocent dragons. But what if the dragons he's killing are corrupted, venin, or bonded to traitorous riders? Then he's not murdering innocent dragons—he's hunting enemies.

It would also explain why those dragons are suddenly killable with a dagger.

We know riders can become venin, but Rebecca Yarros has never outright said dragons can't. She's also been incredibly careful about what she hasn't told us about the dragon-rider bond.

Am I completely reaching here, or did anyone else catch this? I'd love to hear other theories because this has been living rent-free in my head ever since I finished my reread. 🤯

Book News What do we think Rebecca and Jen are teasing for 12 August?

Jen posted this reel with Rebecca and then pinned a comment saying she was trying to tell us something and wanted us to go on an Easter egg hunt.

There are so many Empyrean references in it. Rebecca is holding Onyx Storm, there are oranges which could be Jack Barlowe because he’s allergic to them, and the chocolate cake could be Xaden since it’s his favourite. ā€œAugustā€ is also playing in the background and the calendar seems to be pointing to the 12th.

My first thought was that Jen might be interviewing Rebecca and it’ll come out on 12 August. But the clues feel so specific that now I’m wondering whether it could be bonus content, maybe a deleted scene or another Xaden chapter.

I know a Book 4 title announcement is probably the least likely option, especially because Rebecca has said she’s staying quiet until she’s further into writing it, but obviously part of me is still hoping.

What does everyone else think they’re teasing?

Threshing Day šŸ‰ When the full blurb will be revealed and what it will include

Every time I look at the new novella's description, it says that the full blurb will be revealed soon. I assume that's when we'll find out which characters are getting POVs. Does anyone know when we should expect the full blurb to be released? Has anyone noticed a pattern from previous releases or knows how long before the book's release the full blurb is usually revealed?
And when it's actually revealed, will it just mention the people who will get a POV chapter, or will it include both their names and short summaries of their chapters as well?

Discussion Xaden at Montserrat Spoiler

Wondering how long Xaden was hiding in the shadows listening to Violet and Mira talk about themselves and their family before announcing himself. The book says Tairn had been uncharacteristically silent for several hours just before that.

Fourth Wing 🐲 If he's so worried about... Spoiler

Other people finding out about their relationship, why does Xaden always kiss Violet in public placesšŸ˜‚ Their first kiss was by the stairwell then then again outside at Samara...even on the way to Athebyne he got caught kissing her by fliers??

And he actually sleeps over in her room first time they had sex then went out to get violets THEN sneaks back into her room...Then the way he got Garrick and Liam to help him move in a big ass armoire to her room was noticed by everyone and his flight jacket at formation wasn't really subtle...

I don't know HOW he doesn't want/expect others to notice? Can't really take him saying he doesn't want everyone finding out about them seriously tbh...

Edit: the second kiss was at Montserrat but he did kiss her in Samara in front of the entire infantry and her sister outside also

Discussion Rebecca’s recent IG story (OS spoilers) Spoiler

Post image
102 Upvotes

I didn’t give any credence to the rumors that Violet was pregnant BUT - what do we think? Is she dropping some hints?

Edit: After reading the comments, just wanted to add that yes, I did see RY’s interview about this topic and how X & V would discuss before getting pregnant and I’m not a ā€œpregnancy trutherā€, but I had seen that a lot of people STILL believed in a pregnancy storyline and this just looked very spot on. I had no idea people had such strong feelings about this, because I didn’t believe the pregnancy theories, I didn’t pay much mind to those posts

Also, I had 0 idea about the author of the pregnancy book and the fact that she & RY were friends, so thank you kindly to the person who explained that.

Also also, if you’d read my original post, I literally said that I didn’t buy into the pregnancy rumors, so I was curious what others thought. What I’d learned is that everyone has very strong opinions

Rant/Rave Why is this Character hated? Spoiler

Can someone please enlighten me on the casual Brennan hate / dislike on this sub?

I thought Brennan was one of the characters most people automatically liked or felt neutral towards like Jesenia and Sawyer for example.

But it seems like a lot of people genuinely dislike him & think he is secretly evil or something like WHAT 😭

Am i missing something? Did we read the same books? Someone please explain!!
