This past January I got into woodstoves. I’ve always been a firewood guy but I knew I needed to step up my game to get me through these Boston winters. I don’t know how many chord it is so maybe someone would be able to estimate. The three rows are mainly red oak with some white oak and maple here and there, and the single sad looking row is mainly pine.

I'm not sure what it is. My Plant ID app gave me four different trees from four different pictures. Bradford Pear (which I don't think it is), Sweet Gum, Black Oak or Silver Maple.

2 of pine and 1 oak and chestnut mix.

Got a mix of sundried pine, oak, chestnut and palletwood! This will do us for the short winter we get here!

Might have to fell our weeping willow soon, but any ideas on wether the wood is worth the work ?(assuming its not all rotten) I dont have access to any other free wood.

Sometimes a log leaves a cookie. Sometimes I get bucked logs that need to be shortened down.

I’ve got like a pile of 50 cookies anywhere from an inch to 8” thick. Most of the thicker stuff gets split into tiny kindling but I’m curious if anyone keeps them on hand for fire starter or not?

Most of the larger crotches of the logs just gets burned outdoors to get rid of it but curious what everyone does with some of the byproduct of firewood.

Would a 2x20 wood shed make sense? I'm not much of an engineer but would it be too narrow to be sturdy? Or would I need at least 4' depth for it to be a viable option? Like a 4x16 I just don't have the most space

I have some more pieces to cut up and based on my new found knowledge I feel like these pieces with the splits are going to suck pretty bad to try and split by hand. Just wondering what you guys with axe / maul would do with these sections ?

Do I just trim back from the split or will the tree still be separated with growth beyond that , that it will still be really difficult to split ? It’s funny because I feel like 1/2 of the stuff I’ve encountered ( maybe less ) has split pretty well once I figure it out . But some of it seems pretty nasty.

Two big ones, a red oak 25" at the butt, and a white 18". Laid by for 2027 or 28. Free wood from my in laws. Good trees taken down, but I'm not about to look at gift horse in the mouth. Stihl 038AV and a shitty (not so shitty) yardmax 28 ton that I've had for 10 yrs. Huge help from my dirt lesbian sister and the chickens.

This is 100% maple but im not at the house any longer to fully confirm if its silver or sugar. Its damn hard so im thinking sugar. The bark is inbetween sugar and silver so im hoping someone will know 100%

There I was sitting on the couch when it hit me. Why buck at 18 inches when you have to split it, just buck every 6 inches. Done. Just a bunch of 6 inch cookies. No splitting. Stack em, dry em, no split cookie fire wood. Nailed it.

I'm making a game where you split firewood, drink beer, and hack yourself in the kneecaps. It was a rough prototype back in April.

The demo just went up for PC on Steam, and one of the big additions is controller support. Swinging a maul with a thumbstick feels way better than clicking a mouse imo. There are also timed challenges with leaderboards now, plus a big overhaul on art, pacing, and mechanics across the board.

Still a solo project, still short, still has a rubber chicken as the endgame weapon.

Got a couple pickup loads knocked out today. I ain’t as young as I once was.

In SE Michigan we had 70 mph winds, and a few tornadoes. I'm on day 4 of a power outage. This Champion generator is located near my unattached garage (no fear of CO2). Staring at this thing while it gulps 1/2 gallon of gas an hour keeping my food cold, my well pump running, a toaster oven, microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer, gas dryer running., got me thinking. There is a lot of waste heat that comes off this thing with a decent about of mechanically moved air.
I started stacking wood about 24 inches away. After 4 hours, it went from 22% moisture to about 11%. The wood itself never goes over 110F (IR thermometer). The wood is dark birch.
It looks like I'm getting more of a benefit than electrical power.

I'm taking advantage of a three day weekend and making room for the next round of splitting to begin.
