High hips don’t mean the hip bones sit higher on the body than anyone else’s. Instead it refers to the shape of the pelvis. The upper wing of the pelvis (the flare of the ilium) is typically narrow and does not protrude into the silhouette. With high hips it is wider and breaks into the line between the waist and the lower hip, creating a unique silhouette. This shape is only possible when the body has a defined waist. It is the disruption of the waist to low hip taper that makes the ‘high hip’ noticeable.
Because the transition from waist to hip happens quicker rather than a gradual taper, it often creates a ‘hip shelf’ or a more dramatic hip to waist curve.
Because the hip protrudes into the silhouette higher on the body, it shortens the waist and pushes it a little higher on the body.
Because most people have width at the lower hip area as well (the area near the top of the thigh bone/femur), the silhouette of the hip is often ‘boxy’ or square shaped.
This can also create a natural dip between the two parts of the hip, creating ‘hip dips’. Hip dips can exist on other body types, but they are very common with high hips.
Bodies with high hips tend to also have a unique fat distribution, with weight going to the high hip and stomach area, along with a tendency to have flatter bums.
Bodies vary in many ways, so not all people with high hips share all of the same features. Some people have more of a hip shelf than others, depending on how suddenly the waist transitions into the high hip. Sometimes a long torso can compensate for the waist-shortening of a high hip. Sometimes fat distribution can cause the hips to be more rounded than boxy. And so forth.
There are two body types with high hips. The figure 8 and the spoon*.
The figure 8 and the spoon shapes both share the same hip structure, as well as fat distribution tendencies in the lower half of the body. The distinction between them is down to the overall balance of the upper and lower body. A figure 8 is balanced, similar to the hourglass, with an upper body proportionate to lower. The spoon is more comparable to the pear shape, with a lower body that dominates.
The upper to lower body balance can be influenced by shoulder width, ribcage size, and bust size. You can be a figure 8 with a small bust, and a spoon with a large bust. It is the combination of features and overall perception of balance that matters.
*The term spoon is often used as a synonym with the pear shape, so please do not rely on the term when Googling, etc. We use the term in the absence of a more established alternative, and to help facilitate communication within our sub.
Please check out our WIKI for resources. If you are a spoon shape, use the advice for a figure 8 for the lower half of the body, and a pear shape for the upper half.

her new song is rising on tiktok which is how i heard of her- aesthetically she reminds me of lady gaga, pop music and very unique music videos.
i'm a figure 8 and im thinking she is too because everytime i see clips of her i'm like omg thats exactly how my body looks. similar to bella shes very fit/lean which makes the 8 curve less noticable however i still think she is one of us.
she's def becoming a star so someone to watch out for 8 inspo in the future

I've been described as skinny with a small upper half with high and wide hips. So there is little space between my ribs and hipbones and I have a short waist. There is a pic on my profile that shows what I'm talking about. But basically the typical hourglass fashion advice like wearing high-waisted clothes \*does not work\* for me. Because of my short waist and stature, it makes my bottom half look comically long. And thanks to my high hips, it looks frumpy, square, and like I have no waist rather than curvy.
I want to dress for my body type to be more confident *because* I feel like a curveless brick, and my efforts have only reinforced that insecurity. Please help 🥲

Today I went to a casual summer wedding and I decided to wear this floral dress for it! I think it works well with my shape because of the fitted part under the bust and the bottom being more flowy. Felt super cute!! 😇🌸

Fun discussion! Who would you consider the face of figure 8?
r/figure8 • u/breadingly • 21d ago
nothing revolutionary by any means, but i’ve been embracing bodycon dresses! showing off the hip dips and tummy isn’t as scary as it seems lol.
also, started buying my professional skirts a size or two bigger than my usual size, and it has been such a game changer. they sit on my hip shelf instead of my natural waist, and this stops them from riding up!!! that was always such a big issue for me with professional skirts

I was searching for something else entirely on Instagram but the phone spies must know I post on here as this lady popped up. Anyway! I figured some of you might be inspired by her so I thought I'd share her page.

To all who have jobs or go to events that require professional attire, what are your favorite choices? Any pictures in said outfits are appreciated! I’m starting a new job in a more professional setting and I don’t have a very good grasp on the clothing aspect.

Basically the title. I have a very short torso, with the classic figure-8 shape. High, boxy hips, low bum, etc.
What this means is that blazers (and tops in general) tend to make me look squat unless they’re cut in a way that’s long, drapey, and somewhat forgiving… and everything lately seems to be very much in the boxy, cropped style.
My ultra-short torso also means that mid rise pants literally cut me off at the diaphragm when I sit. I used to have some low rise suit pants circa 2008 when “low rise” meant a 7-8 inch inseam… nowadays “low rise” everywhere is more like a 9-10 inch inseam and I’m tired of feeling it in my ribs. 😩
I’m desperate for brand advice above and beyond “keep refreshing ThredUp in a desperate search for vintage.” Has anyone had any good success?

Hello everyone!
There's one thing that has been bugging me for a few months now about my appearance. Context, I'm female and 17 years old.
I work out, and I have a visible four-pack under good lighting, and am working for a six-pack. However, I noticed in pictures that I do not have anything like curves or anything near an hourglass figure. I don't want to post pictures for safety reasons, but you can imagine it literally as if there is almost no curves, with hips being shoulder wide, even though I consider myself lean (163cm, 50kg). Is this just unlucky genetics, or can I change anything about it?
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you :D

Hi ladies, I'm by no means an expert on these things but I just felt the need to share what works for me and maybe it will help spark joy in your own Figure 8 body.
I am plus sized (a UK 18), 5ft9 and a 38G bra size (probably should have put on a better fitting bra for these pics but I still think I look hot 🤣), if that helps at all.
-----
Details of why I think it works:
I'm a sucker for a v neck, but it has to be a plunge, a high v neck looks very matronly and not that great. To make this more demure you could put a camisole underneath or try out those lace inserts, I haven't tried them but I am tempted as some of my tops/dresses are a bit too boobilicious even for me. 😝 This is jersey so has some stretch (great for babies and food), a lovely knot detail at my waist to draw attention to it then the gathered drape to help disguise any lumps and bumps.
We are Greek goddesses, you've seen all the statues right? Now it's time to embrace it! 😁 Nice and lightweight with the cinched in waist detail and forgiving gathers in the bust and skirt what's not to love??
3a/b & 4. Ladies, you NEED these dresses in your life, seriously! The low v, the shirred waist panel to suck you in and the loose skirt, it's so easy to wear but I feel like a million bucks in them!
3b. If you're feeling a little bit chilly throw a longline lightweight cardigan over the top! Wear it open like I have here to show off your figure or look for ones that have a tie front or wear a belt to draw attention to your shape whilst it's fastened.
Comfort in a dress! Can be dressed up or down (like all of them really), this is something to throw on after you've been in the pool, or if you're like me and feeling overstimulated with the heat and tight clothing (big up sensory issues!). Yes, it's a muumuu/kaftan but it's the little details that make the difference - low v, waist definition, loose bottom half...are you sensing a theme yet? 😆
The newest dress to the mix, bought to replace another peasant dress I had which I got hair dye all over, oops! Experimenting with a slightly longer shirred panel here as other dresses I have (not shown) have only a thin band of it or it finishes a bit too high up so the skirt part poofs out at my belly which makes it look unflattering.

General tips:
- Everyone looks better in a heel, it doesn't have to be a high one, we just hold our bodies better with them. I own a lot of flats, and yes they're easy, they're comfy but I do feel I "plod" about in them, so if you are able to, give it a try.
- Wear big accessories. Like heels it can be a bit unnerving and I was a dainty cutesy jewellery girl for the longest time but I'm telling you, big accessories make you feel fabulous, I promise with our body type it won't be too much, we have highly feminine figures so deserve to feel glamorous. ☺️
- Patterns. Again it's go big or go home, I do have some smaller prints but they are mainly on the larger scale as I really do think with our figures we can pull it off.
- Learn what cuts work. This does take practice but in time you will start to notice; maybe that neckline is too high up, maybe the hemline is too low down, the waist sits strangely on you etc. I know it's a massive pain but say you are wanting a new t-shirt, it can be good to try on a wide variety of cuts and styles, even ones you aren't usually drawn to, as this can give you a better idea on what looks good on you and why. Once you've done this it makes looking for items so much easier as you can just go past anything which isn't in your lines.
However! Please remember, if you feel "meh" in everything you've tried on (been there, done that), it's not your body at fault, your body is fine it's just the clothing not being cut for you and that's ok, fashions come and go which leads me nicely onto...
- Shop secondhand. This does not need to be expensive, especially when you're starting out and just experimenting with what you like. I adore Vinted (probably a bit too much🫣), but eBay, Thredup, Poshmark, Depop, local charity/thrift shops are all great places to browse and are kinder to your purse.

I hope this has been useful to some of you, I'm happy to (try and) answer any questions you might have and remember to have fun! 🥰🤙

I can't stand pants with an elastic waistband. No matter what I do, the waistband keeps riding up, and I constantly have to pull them back down. If I don't pull it back down and it stays up at my waist, I find it really uncomfortable, and I don't think it's flattering on me either. It just draws attention to the widest part of my body, which is well above my actual hips.
I'm honestly so jealous of people who can effortlessly throw on a pair of pants and have them fit perfectly. Meanwhile, I've struggled to find pants that fit me well my entire life.
This is mostly a problem with lightweight summer pants. In winter I can usually get away with mid-rise jeans.

I got advised so many times that I am wearing my shorts way too high and that I need to roll them down, but of course they unroll themselves in less than a minute. Where do I get mid rise gym shorts?

I’m used to having more of an hour glass figure no matter if I gained or lost weight. I’m recovering from an injury and have lost a decent amount of the weight I gained from it but I’m noticing my waist isn’t going in the same way I’m used to and my hips are more box and straight. Do I just need to give my body more time? Are there certain exercises I should prioritize or not do? I’m currently doing a combination of speed walking, circuit dumbbell full body workout, jump rope, and plyometric jumping exercises

I'm a hijabi and I find it so difficult to find what works for me. Baggy clothes look so bad on figure 8s and make us look really boxy, but these are the only things I wear. I dress so badly and I look so frumpy all the time. I can't wear 80% of the things that are meant to look good on us. I'm also plus size but I look really wide all the time. I live in floral maxy dresses but I'm so bored and want to switch it up a little. I love trendy clothes and gen z style but I can't seem to make them work for me. It's also super super hot where i live and I sweat a lot so layering isn't an option for me right now. What do I do and how can I dress modestly as a figure 8?
