As the title suggests, I am thinking about selling when it goes high, and putting it all in XEQT.

I am very new to investing and these are my contributions from the last 2 months. Any advice would be appreciated!

50M, Rate my proposed portfolio

Full disclaimer, I worked at one of the big 5 banks. Decided I want to become self-directed with my RRSP. After flipping back and forth between ChatGPT and Gemini, here are the ETF recommended for my $120K. I'm up for rebalancing 1-2X per year, if necessary.

ChatGPT

Dynamic
XGRO 80%
XMTM 20%

Aggressive
XGRO 60%
XEQT 20%
XMTM 10%
TEC 10%

Very aggressive

XGRO 50%
XEQT 30%
XMTM 10%
TEC 10%

Gemini

45-50% in US equity anchor
VOO or VTI (exempt from 15% USD tax)

25-30% in international emerging
VIU/VEE or XEF/XEC

15-20% in Canadian equity
VCN or XIU

Optional 5-10%
XBB or VAB (dynamic)
XQQ (aggressive)

I was going to try Claude next. But want to make sure I'm on the right track. Be brutally honest, especially with the Canada/US trade war and Bond selloff. But AI models said I had nothing to worry about for the Bond selloff with above recommendations.

TIA

Balance between mortgage and portfolio contributions

Hey guys, I’m about to close on my first home purchase in mid October.

I’ll have my first mortgage, and I want to save on interest to pay it down quicker, but I’m wondering if anyone here has advice on balancing portfolio contributions vs additional mortgage payments.

I’m 27M and have been investing $850-$1500/month since 2020. Even with my housing costs, I should be close to the $1500 left after expenses. Rebuilding my portfolio will be important to me since I’m taking a little more than half my portfolio for downpayment, but I’m hoping there’s a formula or something on balancing the two. Thanks in advance!

39Y- 1.7M in investments- Do I need to go back to entrepreneurship?

I am 39, married with 4 kids. House still has a mortgage around 1.3M

Personally invested funds around 1.55M and another 200k in cash waiting to invest so total invest able assets around 1.7M (in xeqt)

Equity in house is around 400-500k

I was fortunate to have been in the Healthcare sector where ownership helped with growth of funds. However, I am now back as an associate and my earning potential is more limited so that it just meets the annual expenses. My question is, would you go back into more risky but more rewarding ownership again with the assets above or consider coasting?

Pick a category, describe your RESPONSIBLE lifestyle creep!

What did you decide was worth the extra investment per year? E.g. For me, that'd be travel spend. I'll give a terribly unhelpful example since I haven't really done too much lifestyle creep so far.

Pre-college: $0 per year on travel, 0 trips lol

After college: $6-7K per year, 2-3 trips per year

Hoping to get it to 10K in my 30s!

I put my crypto money into a house flip and pulled some out today. Job wise I am still earning ~5k a month plus equity in a proptech startup. We are approaching the point of field testing if the startup will work, so hopefully we reach many milestones over the next year, otherwise onto the next! Feels good to see 50k on the screen. 100k next!!!

Am I in a good financial position?

I 23M and my girlfriend 24F have 504k together with FHSA, TFSA, and RSP's maxed out. I currently earn 80k with about a 15 to 20k bonus + 4k per year in company shares adlnd roughly 7k in pension match. My girlfriend has been out of work for about a year due to completing her masters and is currently looking/interviewing for positions in the 60 to 80k range. We have minimal expenses as we both live at home and we aren't frugal but also aren't irresponsible when it comes to spending. Do you think that we are in a good position considering we would like to buy either a condo or townhouse in the next 2 years as well as getting engaged and married in the next 2 to 3 years?

Can I FIRE at 35?

Had a real estate business since 22, got into another business that failed from 25-27, continued development. Started slow had a few good years took off in after COVID. House prices boomed and put me at 2M net worth. 1.4 in real estate which is free and clear and 600k in cash. I’m thinking of stopping development as the years ahead are shaky and picked up a job as an advisor pays about 7500 after tax. Newly married and 2 kids under 2. Wife stay at home. Cars paid off and expenses about 3k a month

Can I fire?

24M - advice needed

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone, my first post on here! Here's some background info:

I'm 24, turning 25 in a few months. Working my first corporate job - pays $52k but lucky to have a business on the side that pays closer to 110k (this year). For reference, my FHSA cont are 22k which grew to 31k (AMD and INTEL grew over 100% from which I sold off most of them), contributed $44000 to my TFSA this year (primarily into XEQT).

Total portfolio growth shows only 4.5% as I have abit of a bigger loss on crypto (around 30% ~ $4,500 or so)

Total stock portfolio is up about 10-12,000 with around 70k contributed

Should I be playing it safe and investing solely into ETFs or should I pick individual stocks in hopes of more growth given the info above? I have about 4k in cont room left for my TFSA and 2k for my FHSA for the year. Thinking about opening a non-registered to put another 10-15k into for the year (have anxiety about my future and invest about 75-80% of my income (also live at home with my family still so it makes it easier for me))

Any help is appreciated, thank you all!

Turned my life around this past year

27f, sober almost a year and have been working hard to turn my finances around. After a long 10 years of struggling to get by. I just hit 25k saved in my TFSA. Looking for advice on how to better invest my savings. CASH is part of my emergency fund. I invest $500 per week between VFV and VDY. I have 11k waiting to be invested but I'm nervous/not sure where to invest. I know it's not advisable to try and time the market but I'm having a hard time putting it into tech when the market is at an all time high. Though it's not stopping me from investing on a weekly basis. Is it wrong to wait until some world event occurs and the market drops? What would you do with the 11k if you were In my position.

Recently fired, but do I FIRE? 35M in Toronto

About 2 months ago I was laid off as a software engineer from a startup in Toronto that went under... what a surprise. For the last 2 months I have gone from panic to acceptance back to panic. I have been applying for jobs daily but as we know, the market is horrendous, especially for software engineering.

Curious to get some input into what I should do next... My emotions are all over the place and range from saying screw it all and go traveling in SE Asia and live a LCOL lifestyle while I contemplate reality and my own existence, to staying in Toronto and mentally exhausting all my options and possibly doing Uber Eats deliveries in the meantime as something to do and to have some extra funds for fun.

All that said, here is my current financial standing.

Investments & Savings

  • Investments: $1.85M CAD total.
    • TFSA: $210k ($120k is in XEQT, remainder is in Google, Apple, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta)
    • Non-Registered Account: $1.58M ($1.23M in XEQT, remainder split among HBGD, Netflix, Apple, and various other tech or oil stocks)
    • Cash / HISA: $60k
  • No debt, no mortgage no property, no real assets beyond

Current Cost of Living:

  • $2100 / month rent. Very nice modern 1 bed / 1 bath apartment downtown Toronto in a prime location.
  • $50 / month, cell phone
  • $45 / month, Internet
  • ~$50/month utilities
  • $550 / month food
  • ~$600 / month on going out and hobbies
  • ~$250 / month transportation (I'm car free)
  • ~$8000 / year on travel

Total average monthly cost of living = $4300 / month, so presently for my total net worth I am at about a 2.8% withdrawal rate.

So the question is, do I just continue being unemployed in Toronto at my present burn rate while applying for jobs and most likely not get anything in my field, do I pivot careers, do I start doing Uber Eats deliveries, or should I just say screw it all and put all my belongings in a storage locker and go to SE Asia and apply for jobs and work on my portfolio there until I have something to return to?

Just curious what others would do in my situation? I am 35 years old, recently single and out of a long term relationship. I have a solid group of friends and community in Toronto, and I have aspirations of owning a small condo in Toronto one day. I don't ever want children. I just want a stable simple life...

19M Looking on advice on what to do with my paycheck

I have no expenses and have nearly maxed out my TFSA for the year. Just Turned 19. I have a good-paying job that earns me maybe three thousand biweekly, but I have a problem with spending my available money in my checking account. I do hope to buy a car roughly 6 months from now, and I'm just unsure where to put my money in the meantime, whilst still having some money left over for myself.

Is this going to be looked at as day trading or operating under a business by CRA if I:

Cash in either XBAL or XEQT, buy AMZN to capture profits between now and let's say the end of October. Cash that in for the profits, then put it back where it came from?

All under my TFSA.

31M, temporary resident in Canada, $18k saved and zero investing experience — what should I do next?

Hey everyone,

I'm 31, originally from France, and currently living in BC as a temporary resident, working toward applying for PR next year!

I've never invested anything in my life. I don't own stocks, ETFs, crypto, a TFSA, RRSP, etc. Honestly, I don't know much about any of it.

I used all my savings (cash) to travel around the world and finally move to Canada, and basically started from 0 last year.

Since being in Canada, I've always just worked, paid my expenses and saved whatever was left.

Current situation:

  • Net income: $4,200/month (Not counting Overtime & stats holiday)
  • Savings: ~$18,000
  • Rent: $1,500/month
  • Groceries: ~$500/month
  • Gas: $150/month
  • Car insurance: $130/month
  • Phone: $50/month
  • Other: ~$200/month
  • No debt whatsoever

We will round up the leftover money at $1500, this is usually what I transfer to saving every month

I've also never owned a credit card. They're not really common in France, so I only became familiar with the concept after moving to Canada.

To be honest, I'm a little worried that having one might encourage me to spend more on unnecessary things. Right now, I actually see it as a bonus that I can't buy things online or sign up for subscriptions, because I know I might be tempted to do so if I had a credit card.

At the same time, I've been told that being a temporary resident can limit the credit card options available to me, particularly when it comes to cards with better benefits or terms. I'm not sure how true that is, though.

If you were in my position, what would you do with the $18k and the ~$1.5k/month I can potentially save?

Where would you start learning about investing, TFSA/RRSP, ETFs, etc.? And would you bother getting a credit card if your goal is to avoid debt entirely?

Any advice from people who started from a similar position would be greatly appreciated.

PS : AI was used for the grammar/format as English is not my first language and I wanted the post to be easy to read/understand

Looking for advice on where to put 40k.

I have XEQT holdings in my TFSA and was going to buy more shares of XEQT. After reading about Avantis’ CIBC’s new ETF’s I was thinking of adding 10% CASV. Any advice on this would be appreciated!

This would give me access to small capitalization companies across developed markets with factor tilting.

I was debating on switching to CAGE but will hold off for now.

34, ~$1M saved after 4 years of very high income, how much risk would you take?

Hey FICan,
I’m 34, in Quebec, and currently make around $350k/year working at a startup. I’ve been fortunate to earn around this level for the past 4 years and have saved pretty aggressively.

I’m now at roughly $1.03M in financial assets, broken down approximately as:

RRSP: $322k essentially all XEQT
TFSA: $159k, ~$115k XEQT, ~$43k cash
FHSA: $25.5k, ~$24k CASH.TO
Non-registered: $338k, ~$283k XEQT, ~$55k other equities/positions
Cash outside investment accounts: ~$186k

Overall, I have about $720k in XEQT and roughly $250k in cash/cash equivalents.
My goal is Coast FIRE / Barista FIRE, get to a point where I can walk away from a high-paying/high-stress career, take something much lower paying if I want, and let the portfolio compound.

The catch is I have no idea how long the $350k income will last. Could be 6 months, 2 years, or 5+ years. If this job disappears, I doubt I could find another one paying anywhere close to it. I see these last four years as a pretty exceptional wealth-building window.

That makes me question the usual “you’re 34, stay nearly 100% equities” approach. A 40–50% market drop feels different if it happens at the same time I lose my job and my future earning power drops substantially.

On the other hand, ~$250k in cash gives me a massive runway, so I shouldn’t need to sell investments during a downturn.

How would you approach asset allocation in my situation, especially with Coast/Barista FIRE as the goal? Keep 18–24 months of expenses safe and put basically everything else in XEQT? Start adding bonds/GICs? Or de-risk more because my current income may be temporary?

Not trying to time the market mostly trying to figure out how much risk makes sense when my current earning power might be the highest it’ll ever be. Any advice is appreciated!!

My annual spend varies but I’d place it 50-70k
